chelsea with the latest on this story. christina? >> reporter: well david this just coming in from police now. they have arrest the 19-year- old christian garcia accused of firing at the side of this apartment building here in chelsea. you can see bullet holes in this side of the building. garcia is from everett, but mass state police picked him up in andover where the 13-year- old he's accused of shooting is recovering. as tough as this year-old felt safer here than at home. >> the young boy just doesn't want to be here. >> reporter: even though that police now say they have made an arrest, there is still a hole in the wall too close to the bed where he was sleeping before he got up to look at the commotion outside his window and got hit by a stray bullet. spanish-speaking mother emotionally drained. >> he's not able to move his

extract the bullet or not. >> reporter: his cousin julio delgado lives in the same building. >> at first we heard about three gunshots. i am actually one of the closest windows to it. >> they were getting ready for the next day. >> reporter: the shots were fired from this playground say family members, which now has neighbors gripped in fear. >> no security and safety in your own bedroom. if you're not safe th says. she says she does not want to be in the apartment, she needs to move immediately today. and that she doesn't have the resources and the money in order to do that. >> reporter: back live where police have stepped up patrols here. community activists are asking for more protection especially in this playground where they say they have had problems even before last night's shooting.

>> christina, thank you. also breaking tonight boston children's hospital will be expanding as they just got final approval, which is good news for the hospital. but it is bad news for people trying to save a garden that is special to patients and their families. wbz jim smith is live at children's hospital with these breaking details. jim? >> reporter: lisa as you might expect emotions are still very raw tonight for the people who are trying to save this garden. over the years prouty gardens has been an oasis but now a hospital expansion likely means the end of prouty garden. the decision was made by state health regulators just a short time ago. >> all approve? >> aye. >> reporter: the vote came from the dph public health council. with it the likely end of the beloved prouty garden, a green space within the confines of children's hospital. a high-rise medical building will rise where the garden now stands. part of a controversial $1 billion expansion.

to all of us, but the needs of the children, the needs of the families, the needs of the staff is first and foremost. >> this garden can be saved, it should be saved. >> reporter: the day began with protest against the plan. patients, families, others say losing prouty garden will be heartbreaking. >> my brother's ashes were scattered in that garden when he died. essentially the decision in regards to the prouty garden where they're essentially destroy the garden means that his remains are going to be desecrated. >> reporter: children's hospital does say they will replace prouty garden with some other green space. the people who are trying to save this garden are still talking about court challenges, but the status of that right now and the likely success is uncertain at this point. live in boston jim smith wbz news. >> this is definitely a heartfelt show of support for two boston police officers who were shot in the line of duty.

matthew morris were saved by blood donations. today hundreds of people turned out to give the life saving gift. beth germano is live in dorchester where beth, i know you spoke to one of the officers fathers? >> reporter: he came here to thank everyone for their support while his son matthew morris continues to recover. the two officers lost a considerable amount of blood when they were shot last week. police say it is now their turn to help. >> our strong community is doing well as expected. >> reporter: steve morris knows it's a rock road recovery for his son matthew morris still in the intensive care unit. he's grateful for this outpouring of support for officer richard cintolo and matthew morris. both shot multiple times while answering a call in east boston last week. >> i think we all recognize that those two officers probably wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for this blood transfusion. >> reporter: which is why

out to give blood as a way of giving back. feeling this drive is a little more personal. >> it could have been anybody. we go out every day, we don't know what we're going to be faced with. >> reporter: the two officers were fired upon without warning when they answered a domestic violence call. richard cintolo was able to leave the hospital yesterday and recover at home. >> i saw firsthand what the blood did to save my brother's life. >> reporter: which is why this drive was quy the response was overwhelming. he had to come for his friends and brothers. >> it is close to our hat with the two officers. it is hurt in the line of duty. so it makes you want to come out more and more. >> reporter: and police say that officer morris has undergone several surgeries. his recovery will be difficult. the red cross says that 240 pints of blood were donated today. boston police may try to

month. reporting live i'm beth germano wbz news. >> thank you. this only took a minute, a flash mob of thieves robbing a natick iphone store using their numbers to get away with thousands of merchandise. there they go. it seems to be a growing robbery trend. police say seventeen agers with hoods up over -- seven teenagers with their hoods up over their heads to hide their identity grabbed 19 phones at the apple store. the store says it $13,000. all of them ran out the same time. a similar theft happened also at the apple store as the crimes could possibly be connected. new developments tonight in the investigation of gloucester's outgoing police chief. state and federal agencies will now be taking a closer look at the allegations against him and the department. ryan kath joins us with these new details. >> reporter: lisa, thecontroversy keeps growing in this situation. it's now in the hands of the

state prosecutors. the ethics da's office had the case first, but turn it had over to those agencies saying they are better equipped to investigate the allegations. you might remember this all started in september when gloucester's nationally reknown chief leonard campanello was mysteriously placed on leave along with another officer sergeant shawn connors. then a couple weeks ago the mayor announced campanello would be fired for misleading investigators and destroying evidence on a city-issued cell phone. but the former chief worked out a deal saying he challenge that termination an ex change for being allowed to retire at the beginning of the year. so he will receive the remaining paychecks for his $127,000 salary until then. and for now he'll also collect his pension, but that could all change if he is charged and convicted of a crime related to his duties as police chief. ryan kath wbz news. concerns about construction and the safety of local drivers. >> you noticed those orange cones could mean a traffic

average. wow, you're going out on the limb. >> that is true and false. that they basically target those areas with the high certainty if it will be cold or warm or really dry and that we don't fall into that category and that we do agree with that as we will be heading towards a typical winter. something that will be more in line with what do you think about when you see winter? that part will be on target. but the across the southern tier of the u.s. towards the midwest this winter, the expectation. now today locally the change. well about 10 to 20 degrees cooler than this time yesterday and that does not mean that it will be all that cold outside in the upper 60s. the winds are off the atlantic today. but today is still above average for this time of the season. that is unusual warmth that has been squeezed off to the south down towards the mid atlantic watching the rainfall starting to move in across the area.

northern new england. most of this rain will miss us as well heading up into pennsylvania and new york state and another spot seeing a lot of drought. so good news for them. but at the same time we will be watching this system, a fish hook looking thing here around the bahamas as it might become a tropical storm otto. that will help produce the rain for us tomorrow. and so it is kind of a great relationship between all these systems over the next 24 hours. as for tonight, there are some clouds with a little bit of fog and drizzle holding tomorrow, some areas of the light drizzle and the showers are possible during the morning first half of the day. best chance for some heavier showers and those downpours is going to be from the mid- afternoon into the evening as you'll see those moving up across some of the tropical moisture that will be tied to what might become ott ox. the best chance for seeing these elements will be across eastern massachusetts getting into central and western mass not as likely, very isolated in

than half an inch with some rainfall, but not really drought denting. showers will continue on friday night. saturday morning they will start to taper off into the start of the weekend. that's the thing about tomorrow, it doesn't feel like october. temperatures are at or above 70 degrees and becomes very humid tomorrow even though that we don't have a lot of sunshine. they will feel sticky outside for this time of the year with the dew points in the afternoon. well up into the 60s. the humid air will be with us throughout friday night into early saturday morning before the drier air will throughout the day on saturday. so speaking of the weekend, some spotty showers are possible on saturday. i think if we get a calmer part of the day it had be during the morning in terms of winds. as we head through the afternoon and evening hours this storm will deepen bringing in the cooler air kicking up the wind for saturday afternoon night and into the day on sunday. that is some snow across northern new england. so not too blustery in the morning. but by the afternoon and evening we're gusting up to 20 to 25 miles per hour. that same kind of wind will
