studios in boston, this is wbz news this morning. . good morning. to you 5:00 right now. thanks so much for joining us. >> it is october 31st, it is halloween morning. and i guess the question is this morning, danielle, what is the forecast going to be for our little ghosts because it's very important, do we wear the big coat over the costume, little coat? i think it's a tough call. if you can do layers underneath you may be okay. you may want a layer over the top too. be into the 40s for trick or treat time. we're in the 40s right now, at least for some of us. 37 in worcester right now. rain from last evening long gonl clearing taking place. the overall trend even though there's some clouds in place right now is to bring out increasing sunshine, gets the clouds out of here. morning rush sun and clouds we'll call it sunrise.

see. mass dot now well underway with toll booth demolition ahead of schedule they say but not enough to let me nature a massive slow down. >> we're reminding people to obey the 15-mile an hour limit through the old toll areas. >> reporter: and that requires preparation and patience. >> it's going to be hectic at first, you know, you can't -- there's no way around that. >> reporter: because what became habit for so many along the pike >> do not stop at these old plazas there's nobody there to take your money. >> reporter: forcing us all to become creatures of a new one. and taking a live look along the toll booth or what used to be demolition has been underway now for about 55 hours, and this is the big test, unfortunately it is one you'll have to retake possibly every day through november. that's according to mass dot, but of course that

prepare. leave ahead of time so that you can get to your destination well in time. . breaking overnight a pedestrian hit, it happened just before 11 last night. no word on the victim's condition or if the driver will face any charges. . and developing this morning 3 people including 2 children rushed to the hospital after police say they were hit by a drunk driver in salem. we're live in salem thisni city -- this comes as the city is dealing with a lot of people heading there for halloween. >> reporter: and police say a woman and 2, 10-year old girls were hit in this intersection during salem's popular halloween celebrations that attract thousands of people. take a look at this video showing police responding to the scene and reconstructing the accident last night. police say a 52-year old man was driving under the influence when he hit

one of the girls was taken to mass general hospital. the woman and the other child were taken to salem hospital p. the globe reports they were hit while walking to the crosswalk and the driver initially took off but then returned to the scene. police say the driver is facing charges of operating under the influence, failing to yield and leaving the scene of an accident causing personal injury. even though the victims were seriously hurt they are expected to survive. officials say they were huge crowds here over the weekend and tonight big night. so this really serves an an important reminder for everyone in salem and all communities really to be extra careful tonight because there will be a lot of people out and about celebrating halloween and trick or treating. . an mbta trolley operator recovering this morning after he was attacked by a man wearing a halloween mask. police are still searching for the suspect who took off leaving the employee unconscious. that operator says the attacker told

he said the man punched him in his head and pulled him off the trolley and onto the platform. >> pretty tragic, i think. and unfortunately not so surprising. >> why would you do that? i mean, that's just ridiculous. you don't have the money you hurt people. that doesn't even make any sense. >> the governor released a statement about the attack saying quote such a vicious and senseless violent attack on public employee is intolerable. our thoughts and prayers are with the driver as he recovers. a boston college student sexually assaulted and the suspect is still out there. police say the woman was walking from cleveland circle back to her off campus residence when she was followed by 2 men. the woman says one of the men grabbed and assaulted her on chestnut hill driveway. she was able to break free and get away. police are reminded students to avoid walking alone at night and use the university's escort

areas and avoid taking shortcuts. people living in the mountains of central italy preparing for the possibility of more earthquakes. yesterday a magnitude 6.6 quake struck crumbling buildings. no deaths have been reported. many people have already fled their homes after 2 powerful tremors last week. in august nearly 300 people died when a more populated area in the region was hit by a smaller earthquake. checking in on campaign this morning the fbi has obtained a warrant to search through thousands of newly scored emails. the news is shaking up the presidential race with just 8 days to go until the election. . >> reporter: as hillary clinton tried to move past the latest chapter into her email scandal. >> i'm not stopping now. we're just getting warmed up. >> reporter: donald trump thanked the former new york congressman at the center of the

43 in boston right now. same in lawrence, 37 in worcester so a few spots have dipped into the 30s. i wouldn't be surprised if a few more spots dip into the 30s as the skies are just starting to partially clear as the rain came through last evening and night. what's going on now is high pressure is building in from eastern canned. so for the next couple of days it will provide us with a dry quiet stretch. temperatures on the cool side. today. tomorrow that high still in control, a little bit of a wind turns in from the south, right around or over 50 again. keep in mind we should be in the upper 50s this time of year. so cooler an afternoon the next 2 days. on wednesday here comes a warm front not a lot of moisture with it but there will be clouds that's the sign of the warmer air pushing in. the clouds decrease, sun cops out we

afternoon. any chance of wet weather doesn't arrive until later on thursday. with the next kind of front, that will cool us back down for the end of the week. highs today 51 in boston, same in plymouth right around you notice just over 50 for most of us there will be upper 40s on the map. 46 in worcester as well. so obviously trick or treaters those temperatures are going to cool off through the 40s this evening. that's what you want tube prepped for if you're heading o mostly clear tonight, 26 to 33 in the suburbs, 38 do you want and highs tomorrow will be a few degrees above where they'll be today about 52 in boston, 53 in bedford, and a nice blend of sun and clouds. overall a pretty good day by the start of november standards, can you believe it? mid-60 says on wednesday, upper 60s on thursday as the clouds increase there will be a threat for some rain thursday evening. and then we cool off on friday in the lower 50s. the weekend looking mainly

50 degrees. traffic and weather together. how does it look from up there? hey, this is pretty cool. this is my first time in sky eye. so a lot of people expecting today to be pretty scary not because it's halloween but because this is day 1 of the rush hour commute with all this construction underway on the mass pike. we have a live look right now at the tolls where construction has already begun. they've already ripped 23 simultaneous construction sites just like along the pike. electronic tolling started friday night. mass dot has asked people to stay home to make sure they have a full tank of gas, still pretty early right now so traffic is very light in this area but this is kind of the calm before the storm or at least that's what we are expecting this morning. now, this is phase 1 of this project which is finished on november

so traffic is being routed to the left and right with these makeshift lanes. we're expecting this to get pretty busy. the speed limit is 15 miles an hour through the construction site. we'll keep watching this all morning but for now we'll send it back to you. >> thank you very much. keep an eye on the roads for us. charter schools in boston are trying to make admissions process a little easier for families. families will be able to apply with just one application. the new cycle begins on tuesday and deadline is february 28th. a paper application will be available at most schools for families who don't have access to the internet. the application process comes as massachusetts voters consider whether to approve a ballot question that would allow up to 12 new charter schools in the state each year outside of existing caps.

right now over the tolls and it's a bird's eye view and basically a view that you'll be seeing. [audio difficulty] a huge chunk of the road. they need to fill in underground tunnels and repave this section and traffic is being routed to the left and to the right. now, the speed limit through this construc s per hour, through all the sites, all 23 of them along the pike. so during the morning rush hour commute you can expect that that is really really going to slow things down significantly. we have 16 up an running so those have been activated since friday night. so you'll be able to go right through those but slow speed limits through 23 spots along the pike. we're going to keep watching this. we're expecting things to pick up when

roads. send it back to you. >> thank you. checking our top stories this monday morning state highway officials warn that this morning's commute could be a long one. it's the first weekday rush hour with the new electronic tolling on the pike. crews began demolishing the plazas over the weekend. officials are worried it will cause confusion for drivers this morning. and breaking overnight a pedestrian no word on the victim's condition or if the driver will face charges. boston police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man on the south end. 31-year old coleman was shot. his mother says her son was emotionally disturbed. police say when they arrived he pulled out a knife

>> i heard gunshots, that's my son. he had a knife and all this, that's not true. >> at some point the individual pulled out a large knife and started to go at the ems personnel. our officers who were outside heard the commotion, they went in and he started to come at the officers. at that point they -- it left them no choice, they fired, and unfortunately they had to take this young individual's life. >> not think a taser would have worked in this situation. the officers were not wearing body cameras, both officers are on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. a response to a gun buy back program is surprising the police. it was the first time they held the event and residents brought in 174 rifles, assault rifles, shotguns.

police ran out of gift cards and had to go get more. a 44-year old man is now charged with assaulting a girl in a parking lot at a high school. administrators say the pair knew each other but are not giving any other specifics this happened on thursday. the school calls it an isolated incident and says other students were never at risk. the fbi now has a search warrant to start reviewing newly discovered emails that might be tied to the hillary clinton email probe. through thousands of emails found on a computer. they want to know if those emails shed any new light on clinton's use of a private email server. the campaign is questioning the timing. and former attorney general holder is one of dozens of former federal prosecutors speaking out against the fbi director james comey saying he broke policy when he alerted

$30 billion deal to combine its oil and gas business. the wall street journal says the deal could be announced as early as today. if approved they can better compete with rivals, fantasy sports base in boston and fan dual could be joining forces. both companies are tied up in legal battles from numerous states that say the sites are actually illegal gambling businesses. an sugar rush spending on candy is expected to hit $4 billion, about $30 per house and a lot more than americans spent during the past 4 years. in a different study 72% of parents admit to sharing their children's candy with or without their knowledge. . >> absolutely. >>i mean -- >> dip in the candy bucket. >> i'm just trying to help them out because they don't want all that candy. that's too much for

gone. clearing taking place right now. we're starting to see some sunshine here north and west of boston once the sun comes up this morning. so it will be turning into a bright day after the morning clouds this morning depart. high pressure is building in from the north and west and will provide us with a dry stretch the next couple of days and a cooler than normal stretch too. highs today will be in the lower 50s, keep in mind we should be about 57 this time of year. so cooler than average afternoon and temperatures will fall through tomorrow looks quiet, sun and clouds, low 50s again. wednesday warm front will bring clouds in the morning and then the sun breaks out we push 65 wednesday afternoon. so it's going to be a mild middle part of the week. out ahead of fronted it will get even warmer on thursday but it will bring more clouds and the threat for rain on thursday not until late in the day. so most of thursday morning and afternoon is dry. so high temperatures today right

wind will be a little bit active already gusting at times over 20 miles per hour and that will continue occasionally through the afternoon. 46 in worcester today with an elevation at the airport. right around or just over 50 for political back down to cape cod. the question is do you bundle over or put on layers underneath. we are going to be cooling off pretty quickly during trick or treat time. chilly, skier lies some cities and overnight tonight it's going to be cold. 38 in boston but some 20s in the suburbs these may be a little bit generous too. i wouldn't be surprised if we had mid-20s on the map early tomorrow morning at this time. sun and clouds, a decent rebound 53 degrees tomorrow and bump it up, 65 on wednesday, upper 60s on thursday, clouds increase, chance of evening rain, that's the front that cools us off to end the week.
