live from the channel 4 studios in boston, wbz news at noon starts now with breaking news. . >> we begin with breaking news right now at noon, a fire truck has been involved in an accident in the back bay. the boston fire department t happened at commonbeth avenue and dartmouth street. we will bring you updates as soon as we get them. the gas leak forcing the evacuation of at least 2 buildings in downtown boston near city hall, construction crews hit a gasoline around 8:00 this morning. the buildings were cleared until the gas to be shut off. national grid is on the scene right now working to replace that pipe. streets are still shut down and will be closed for a few hours.

me. >> the driver took off but minutes later returned to the scene. >> reporter: according to court paperwork that mother and her 10-year old twin girls were walking in the crosswalk heading back into town to get a stuffed animal they forgot when they were hit by a car. this is 52-year old mitchell appearing court this morning facing charges for drinking and driver. police say afternoon er nurse was driving behind him when crashed into the woman and children. she said she saw one of the girls go over the hood of the car. police say the driver took off but came back and turned himself in. prosecutors say first he ditched a partially will the 12 pack of beer. the 3 were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. one of the girls had possible head and back injuries and a possible broken femur. with about 75,000 people

after the evening commute. we'll take you through the next several days coming up in just a few. today a 44-year old man is facing charges for raining a high school student in a school's apartment. the victim told police the assault happened while school was in session last thursday. it's believed they knew each other prior to the attack. that man is set to be in court this afternoon. boston police are searching for the suspect in a sexual assault of a boston college student. police say was walking back to her off campus apartment just after 2:30 sunday when she was followed by 2 men. the woman says one of them grabbed and assaulted her on chestnut hill drive. she was able to break free and get away. police are reminding students to avoid walking alone at night and to use the escort service and to stay in well lit areas. coming up a man shot and killed by boston police, why his

breaking news right now i want to update you on the situation a boston fire truck involved in an accident. boston ems confirms 4 firefighters and one civilian have been taken to the hospital after the crash in the back bay. it appears at least 2 cars and that fire truck again those firefighters taken to mass general. we'll continue to follow this story for you and bring you updates as soon as they come into the news room. boston police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man in the south end. >> but the victim's mother says her son didn't have to die. the 22-year old was shot early sunday morning after his mother called for him.

suffers from schizophrenia. >> reporter: knocked me down knocked my son down i heard gunshots. he had a knife and all this, that's not true. >> at some point the individual pulled out a large knife and started to go at the ems personnel . our officers who were outside heard the commotion they went in and he started to come at the officers. at that point they -- it left them no choice. they unfortunately they had to take this young individual's life. >> the commissioner says he does not think a taser would have worked in this situation. the officers were not wearing body cameras. both involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave during the investigation. people living in the mountains of central italy are preparing for the pocketed of more earth quakes. yesterday a magnitude 6.6 quake struck crumbling buildings. no deaths have been reported.

i want to update you on our breaking news we told you about at the top of t firefighters and one civilian have been sent to the hospital after a fire truck crash in boston's back bay. you're looking at live pictures right now at the scene. ken, what can you tell us? what's the latest? >> well, it's a terrible accident down here. it's between a fire truck and a car. the car's front is really smashed in. it's even hard to know what kind of car it was and then the fire truck went up on the sidewalk.
