live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz news at 5:30. tonight the calls for help after a violent home invasion in sterling. i'm paula evans. >> and i'm liam martin. the 70-year-old woman tied up and the thieves are still on the run. >> reporter: police released the 911 calls moments after three masked men ransacked the home. the victim managed to call for >> i have been robbed by three men and they have taken off with my 2004 black deville. >> how long ago were they in the house? >> about three minutes ago. they left. they have to be in sterling in my 2004 deville. >> police found the stolen car about 7 miles away.

had accent experience got away with a thousand dollars worth of her belongings. police believe the thieves targeted the home. and they home surveillance video will help catch the robbers. opening statements were delivered in the trial of a drifter convicted of a deadly carjacking. gary samson pleaded guilty. his first overturned on appeal. today the defense said he suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was younger and cannot control his impulses. but the prosecutor said he showed no mercy to his victims. samson is eligible for the punishment because he was convicted on federal charges. a large crane came in to clean up this train derailment in westford. six freight cars went off the

a hazmat crew rushed to the scene and a robocall alerted neighbors about a possible evacuation. there was no spill and no one had to evacuate. and this was the second derailment in two years, >> it's concerning in the middle of the night to get a phone call. we may need you to move out and move to shelter. they have to respond and let my neighbors and my constituents know why this happened. >> train's owner says safety is the first priority. they are now evaluating to figure out what caused the second derailment. investigators hope a survivor of this horrific bus crash in baltimore will help them figure out what caused the accident. early yesterday morning a school bus slammed into a commuter bus killing drivers and four passengers on the transit bus. there were no children on the school bus, only the driver and

there's academic research showing oprah winfrey's endorsement of senator barack obama at the height of her popularity was worth a million votes to obama. so that is some serious bounce. >> is there an endorsement out there that could have a comparable impact? do you think? >> past polling suggests that there's no impact on the vast majority of voters. the w that if your governor endorses someone, 19% are more likely to endorse. minister, 18%. local newspaper, 14% are more likely to vote for the candidate and 14% are less likely and so it's a complete wash. and they threw in eight names of celebrities, and all of them had a negative impact. support from bill gates made 13% of voters more likely to

catching on with the bonus day phrasing. hopefully you had a chance to get outside and soak in the fresh air. the high was 70 degrees. record high today is 83 in boston. a sweet day to be outdoors. in the 60s across the area and 50s across cape cod and the islands. still a lot of very warm air. 80degrees in wichita. and cleveland at 7r what are the chances you would have the last two games in cleveland in november and both of them would be near 80 degrees. and the rain won't be a problem. you might get a shower but the main batch of rain won't move in until midnight. unless it's 16 or 17 innings, they'll be okay. showers arriving towards daybreak tomorrow. upper 40s to around 50 degrees.

showers, early tomorrow morning, best chance will be across vermont, new hampshire, and far northern massachusetts. for most of us, we're waiting until the afternoon. notice the chance for the sunshine south of the pike. this is where the warmest temperatures are going to be and where the best day overall is going to be. and then we track through the afternoon and early evening. and might be a rumble of thunder mixed in. but i'm not expecting a big rain event. tomorrow evening, it's all gone by the time we wake morning. you can see where the winds will be more southerly. along and south of the pike. once you head northward to new hampshire and far northern mass most of the day will be in the 40s and 50s. grayer and cooler. and a better chance for steady rainfall in new hampshire and northern mass. we could see a half inch in spots. and for the most part, a few showers, not a lot of

and we head into the afternoon. and more northerly across new hampshire, and you can see where the front is setting up. and as we head into the evening, the winds turn to the northwest. and that will set up a blustery friday where winds will be gusting 30 miles per hour throughout the day. delivering a colder air mass and a dry day. saturday dry and cool and chilly with low 50s and a mix of sun and clouds. and sunday a storm will start to develop to the east. and it's going to stay to the east. and as it gets for a flurry or a sprinkle especially on sunday morning. and northern new england will have snow showers in the mountains. saturday is dry, partly cloudy, upper 40s to low 50s. a little cooler and more cloud cover and a chance for a flurry or a sprinkle. we have the warm pattern and cooler air will dip in and this is the pattern we get for the next 10 days. we'll be close to average when

how far is too far for a high school kid to walk to school. in boston, the city does not provide transportation if the students live less than 2 miles from the schools. >> i wish i could take the bus. >> but that's not possible for ninth grader elijah perryman. it's a mile and a half walk and a mile and a half home again. >> it's hard for me to walk
