>> rare -- where the candidates will be 20 blocks from each other on election night. hillary clinton on the west side of manhattan and donald trump at the hilton mid-town four blocks from us here. and we are two hours from some of the most significant races in this country. 7:00 in florida starting to despite holding campaign rallies in the wee hours of the morning they were up early and casting their own votes. taking the advice they gave to supporters. both voted in new york with spouses and seemed excited and relaxed. >> i know how much responsibility goes with this and so many people are counting on me from this election. what it means for our country. and i'll do the very best i can

today. >> and former president bill clinton is already used to the idea of being the country's first first gentleman. >> it's been that way -- i've had 15 years of practice. >> trump high fiving some kids with a bake sale and stayed on message. the republican nominee saying it's an honor to run for president. >> we'll see what happens. >> long lines of voters early sign that supporters understand the stakes. but it has been a bitter and battering campaign and one of those voters spoke for many. >> i'm exhausted. [ laughter ] so glad it's over. >> reporter: aren't we all. clinton comes in tonight with a slight edge in the polls. she has an easier path to 270 electoral votes. but there's no doubt that the

campaigns are bracing for a potentially long night. i'm liam martin. >> they both think they have the path to 270. we'll see. >> long lines like this have been the norm throughout the day. and some people waiting in line for the upwards of three hours for chance to cast their ballots. chantee lans is live with more. >> reporter: those long lines continue here at jamaica this is jfk elementary school. we've heard from several people. the wait here was more than two hours earlier. >> it's a little chaotic and a little like -- a little cramped for space. >> frustration from long lines in jamaica plains. >> i waited a little bit over two hours. and it's not well coordinated.

the main concern. >> our emphasis has been to keep the voting going no matter what. >> we should really be ensuring that all american citizens everyone that's eligible has their ability to cast their vote today. >> economic justice in boston, the group has 500 volunteers working in 11 cities across the at the long lines and they have notified the office of the secretary of state. >> people call voting the crown jewel of american liberties, and we're ensuring that everyone has equal access to the ballot box. >> and back live, you can see the line is outside the door.

advocacy group. 1866 our vote. the results are coming in. just after midnight, the tiny town of dixville notch, new hampshire -- hillary clinton beat donald trump by a vote of 4-2. and mitt romney got one write-in vote. democrats need to win five one. each cast their votes this morning. ken macleod is in manchester. and we begin with beth germano with kelly ayotte's camp. >> reporter: this has certainly been one of the most closely watched and most expensive senate races in the country. democrats are looking at four or five seats in the senate to

kelly ayotte is facing a popular governor which has made the race so tight. and she's been struggling with how to handle donald trump. after a 24 hour political marathon, senator kelly ayotte cast her vote. fighting for a second term and wouldn't even name donald trump today, a candidate who has been problematic for her campaign. >> who is going to be e hampshire and this race is one where i've been earning the support of the people of new hampshire. >> how trump will affect this race is the question. ayotte has tried to distance herself from the nominee and his controversial remarks about women. >> i don't think she shares any of his ideals. but she was backed into a

the state's enormous chunk of independents will break her way. >> we've been talking to as many voters about the really clear choice here. >> this is a state that loves quirky firsts. and if hassen wins, they'll have another, two sitting female senators who are both former governors of their state. ken macleod, wbz news. millions of dollars has been spent the massachusetts ballot, that's charter school debate. mostly mostly is covering that -- louisa moller is covering that. >> reporter: that's the most expensive ballot initiative in the country. after a full day at the polls, supporters and opponents will be standing by. here's what this is all about. a yes on question two would

increase in enrollment in existing charter schools. supporters say it's simple. the publicly funded, privately run schools will allow more choice. thousands of people are on waiting lists for schools already. opponents say lifting the cap would divert much needed funds from traditional public schools. due to the success of the charr massachusetts right now. this is sure to make waves and the waves could come nationally. the other question is pot or not. question four decides whether or not to legalize marijuana for recreational use in massachusetts. supporters are hoping for a win. >> reporter: we're at -- downtown and supporters of question four will be gathering

coming in and the polls have looked favorable all along despite opposition from heavy hitters. it would be legal for adults 21 years or older to possess and use up to an ounce of marijuana. dispensaries wouldn't open until 2018. supporters argue it would take pot out opponents raise questions about how to information drunk driving as well as the regulation of edibles. one of five states deciding whether or not to legalize marijuana recreationally. to watch tonight our political analyst jon keller is

>> two early reporting states that close at 7:30 will tell us a lot about the race and our political future. ohio is not just the quintessential swing state but it's a test of trumpism's appeal. a white rust belt state that's lagged well behind in recovery. a loss here would race questions about the potency of his political argume used to be a slam dunk for republicans, but it's become a more diverse state than ohio with a fast growing economy and population. a clinton loss here not only wouldn't bode well for her tonight. it wouldn't bode well for the long run democratic strategy. >> what are you looking for in new hampshire? >> new hampshire is key in so

trump trump won the new hampshire primary. 700,000 people voted for president in new hampshire four years ago. i'm fascinated to see how deep trump's inroads are in this state. and how his strength or lack of it is reflected in the senate race. even in defeat it could embolden candidates eyes the 2020 approach. and i really angered you with that one but we have to talk about it. and an ayotte loss might be a sign that relative moderation doesn't pay off. >> at 6:00 we'll be focusing on massachusetts and the ballot questions, we heard from ryan kath just a moment ago. >> i think ballot question two, the charter school expansion question, is the one to watch.

vice presidential candidates tim kaine and mike pence cast their votes this morning. kaine had to wait until 6:00. pence walked from the governor's mansion. former governor bill we would had the chance to vote with gary johnson. federal officials are making sure that no one tampers with the election. the cyber command center operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. u.s. officials accused russia of trying to interfere with the u.s. election process. russia calls that nonsense. voting machines are not

cloud cover as our next storm system approaches. not so much of a storm. it's going to bring a couple of showers tomorrow. i'm not expecting a lot of rainfall. the increasing cloudiness. temps in the mid-30s to low 40s. 44 for a low in downtown boston. and tomorrow we track the rain showers. you'll see the increasing clouds and starting in the morning across the interior some of the rain showers starting to mo not expecting big rain totals. just about everyone will see less than a quarter of an inch. and the best chance would be in southeastern massachusetts. before we get to the frontal passage. temps around 60 in eastern mass. and middle 50s across central massachusetts and southwestern new hampshire. you'll get into the cooler air and the wind shift to the north and west.
