a deadly disagreement on the doorstep of a dorchester home. tonight it has the neighborhood in fear. >> caught on camera, a car cut in half by a commuter train. why the survivors of the crash weren't sticking around for help. >> from critics to cabinet, does president-elect trump have a role for romney? >> she lost her son in a crash and his cherished keepsake. how a police officer's hobby helped get it back. >> no gronk, no the pats' other lethal weapon is ready. >> what's up, ya'll. i'm marty. you're watching wbz tv, home of the patriots. tonight at 11:00, families in a boston neighborhood in fear and fed up tonight after a fight turned deadly inside of a home. police say the homeowner shot and killed the man during a dispute. i'm david wade. >> i'm lisa hughes.

afraid to let their kids outside. nick is live in dorchester. >> some parents who live in this very area were telling me tonight point blank they think twice before coming outside walking their kids down this particular sidewalk because of incidents we saw right here today. >> we can't even come outside and let our kids come outside because we're scared. >> reporter: this is the mindset of a mother, currently living along west cottage street meet. melissa cub recall could only shake her head and hold her kids close. >> it's not a random act of violence. clearly an argument that escalated to an unfortunate death. >> reporter: according to police commissioner william evans, one man involved in the argument was found dead by the doorway of this home, surrounded by red tape.

questioning. neighbors like lisa, meanwhile, question why the fight turned fatal. >> i don't know why people are deciding to kill instead of talking and resolving it in another way. people are losing their family members and it's pointless. >> that's just really sad. it's too much. >> lisa went on to say it's going to take everyone to solve this issue collectively. solve the problem community. meanwhile police still trying to solve exactly what happened here tonight. we're live in dorchester, wbz news. a major delay on the worcester commuter rail lasted for hours after a train hit and killed a man near wellsly square. police say the 59-year-old man was hit by an outbound train just after 6:00. they're now trying to figure out how and why he was on the track. now at 11:00, a train literally splits a car in half.

in fact they simply open the doors and then ran away, though they are in trouble tonight. we're also hearing 911 calls from frantic witnesses. >> that train was going 65 miles per hour down these tracks when it slammed in to that car. the two passengers took off as you said and it took police hours to find them. >> what is t emergency? >> in the dead of night, an emergency rattled this revere neighborhood. >> all of the sudden we just heard a big boom, kind of like small explosion. >> reporter: the commuter train careened in to a car cutting it in half. miraculously the car's two passengers ran away from the scene, all of it caught on surveillance video. >> how they came out on the video was shocking to me. i can't believe it. >> reporter: transit police say

gotten in a different kind of fender bender when he rear ended another vehicle. witnesses say the driver of that car was trying to catch him when he daringly drove around the closed railroad gate and the collision occurred. >> the transmission, the whole engine was away from the car. >> reporter: jenny reynolds spoke with the driver of that rear ended car. >> he was definitely shaken up but i just wanted to talk to them. i don't know how this had to onboard the train were transferred to another one. neighbors thankful this wasn't worse. >> it was major. very scary. especially when you have kids around. >> i guess police did end up finding those two passengers. they're not releasing the name of the driver. he will be summonsed to court. tonight a cape cod teenager is under arrest accused of attacking and trying to strangle

this happened last week. police say 18-year-old john allen grabbed the girl as she was walking to her bus stop. she was able to escape. police say allen and the victim live on the same street but that they didn't know each other. an elderly man died mid-flight. the crew reported a medical condition. state police say the passenger appears to have died of natural causes. the flight had originated in fort meyers, florida. several states are bracing for a out west moves east. this storm is going to bring big changes by the end of the weekend. >> this is the pattern shift we're talking about that takes place in mid-november. winter finally starting to show up. here's the storm right now wrapping up across the upper midwest. a foot of snow in parts of minnesota. we'll be talking about totals like that around here. there you see the storm. warnings out ahead of it. in to parts of minnesota. and that's going to be the strip of snow that will be heaviest

former house speaker now knows he is getting out of prison early. his wife breaking the good news in an e-mail that took hours to clear security. demazy served five years of his eight-year sentence on corruption charged. he's battled tongue and prostate cancer and getting out early on what's known as compassionate release. she said her husband's health is fragile. >> he's on a puree diet. seeing a specialist will be able to give him a diet that's more filled with nutrients and protein. >> he'll be released on tuesday and confine today the couple's melrose apartment. he'll be allowed out only for medical appointments and to go to church. new tonight, the fbi is searching for a serial bank robber who they have dubbed the spelling bee bandit and they do

each time he writes the word robbery on the note and gives it to the teller, spelling robbery with just one b. $1,000 is offered for information leading to his arrest. college student taking responsibility for a deadly drunk driving crash that killed his best friend. joseph castano pleaded guilty today. police say he was drunk when he crashed in to a pole, killing his friend craig sampson iii. tonight sampson's dad is hoping teenagers will think twi >> and i hope that our loss, as painful as it is, can maybe prevent somebody else from having the same loss. >> castano will serve three and a half years in jail and will lose his license for 15 years. all new tonight, a priceless memento returned to a local family months after a teenager's

died. when no one found it at the crash scene, his family worried it was gone forever. two local police officers were determined to find it. as katie shows us, it's a blessing they never gave up. >> reporter: mementos mark where aj robbins was killed. his family hoped to find one item aj was wearing at the time of his accident. this st. christopher medal. debbie lynch gave the st. christopher to protect her nephew when he graduated. the football stand-out was crashed on hollis road in august. police say the driver was drunk. carol robbins is aj's mom. >> the medal is the last thing holding him there. >> reporter: mike luth knows the family and had searched with no luck. >> realistically did you think you were going to find it? >> no, i thought it was a last ditch shot. >> reporter: two months after the crash he called lieutenant

>> came across like old barbed wire and old bottle caps and things like that. >> reporter: after searching this area for two and a half hours, they were about to call it a day. then three inches down they found what they were looking for. >> it was a surprise. probably one of the best surprises i've ever had in this line of work. >> reporter: the two officers quickly brought the medal to carol who later gave it back to her sister. we were there as aunt debbie was able to thank him >> glad it's back where it belongs. >> i was there when he was born. and i watched it. and this was the last thing he had. >> it's really good to know there was nothing else tying him to that spot. >> reporter: thanks to the officer who would not give up. >> true heroes to that family. >> that is going above and beyond right there. coming up next, thousands of

tonight an eye team investigation. kids in state custody missing, sometimes out on the streets for more than a year. >> for the first time the eye team is uncovering the surprising number of runaways. tonight ryan has a closer look at how frightening this is for families. >> reporter: right in the middle of a school day, a stolen suv flips in a roxbury neighborhood.

involved. >> reporter: christy emanuel remembers the frightening call about her son. >> for several minutes i didn't know if my son was dead or alive. >> reporter: at the time of the crash ben was living in a group home in the custody of department of children and families. >> it's been a nightmare. >> reporter: two years ago christy moved to massachusetts with her two kids to escape an abusive relationship. last year after bouncing from shelter to shelter -- >> they took them. >> reporter: christy says being anything to keep her older son safer. ever since that separation, he's constantly been on the run. even making it all the way to florida twice. >> how many times has he run away? >> lost count. i think the same reason they took him from me, they can't handle him either. >> reporter: the eye team is learning how many kids in state custody slip out of sight. over a three-year period, there

incidents. we found 140 teens missing for the length of an entire 180-day school year. while some kids ran away repeatedly for short stints of time, we also found a child who was gone five different times for a total of 1,080 days. >> this is a real important issue. >> reporter: child safety advocate says those numbers need to change. >> did the amount of time some of these kids were gone surprise you? >> i'd like to see reduced. my question is what are we doing to keep those kids from being absent or missing from the program or if they are missing from a program, how do we locate them and get them back to safety as quickly as possible? >> we wanted to ask the dcf commissioner to get more information on the numbers. but they declined an interview request. >> i think dcf should be willing to share this information and answer questions. these are our children. >> everybody likes him.

to regain custody of her children, she questions why the state took them in the first place. >> it's been traumatizing for all of us this past year to be apart and separated and bounced around from place to place. i just feel there has to be some kind of accountability. >> reporter: it took 10 months for the eye team to get those numbers and a week before dcf provided the records, we learned the agency implemented its first ever policy on missing kids in dcf custody. this provides specific guidelines for contacting police, launching searches, and identifying kids that are a high risk to run. for the eye team, wbz news. >> if there's something you think the eye team should take a closer look at, drop them an e-mail or call them. 617-779-tips. new video tonight of a driver plowing in to a crowd, trying to escape a bar fight in florida. he actually ends up crashing in to the building then gets out and takes off running. police are now trying to find

video. it shows a deer slamming in to a runner in a cross country race. this happened in pennsylvania. a teammate helped the college student back on to his feet. and guess what? he finishes the race even after that. the impact so much that he goes flying through the air. >> he knows he's lucky. i think you deserve a special medal for that. >> a little deer on it. it sounds like we're going to be going from very warm to potentially snow flurries in a pretty short period of time. >> tell us more. >> we've got you sold. that's a good thing. a little bit of a change in the weather is headed our way this weekend. it's been a really warm fall. 46 degrees in the city tonight. northwest breeze about 12 miles per hour and temperatures chilly but not that cold for this time of year. 41 in worcestor. and the cape, you're going to be living on the edge of the ocean

there compared to everywhere else. this is a storm that has most of our focus. this is the game changer. a lot of warmth ahead of it. but finally cold air that's behind it. we'll track that in a moment. tonight we fall back through the 30s. a little milder across the cape as the wind continues there. the clouds are more likely there with the northerly breeze. bright for most of us. there will be more cloud cover expected. that will be the case throughout much of the day tomorrow. otherwise mostly sunny. winds out of the north at 15. gusts to 25 on cape cod and nantucket. then a quiet evening as we kick off the weekend. these are your highs. close to 60 everywhere inland. really nice end to the week for us. more like the low to mid 50s across the cape, the islands again. don't want to become a broken record there but it's going to be a little different compared to everyone else. we look toward saturday, that ocean storm is still churning. as the day goes on those ocean clouds will back in from cape

to this approaching storm system saturday evening. as they're drawn inland, we might get fog and mist developing saturday night. that front finally moves through on sunday morning. with that rain showers, and as the colder air filters in behind it, we change over to flurries and snow showers. those will be most likely in the berkshires, northern western county. we all have a chance of seeing a few snowflakes. different story up north. plenty of snow falling in the mountains of vermont, new york, good news for the ski areas. as for the weekend saturday morning, got the camp harborview 5k here in the city around boston common. 48 degrees. looks nice for our tree lighting spectacular. clouds will be filling in. chance for a little mist. temperatures will be in the 40s. not too tough to take. sunday is our day of change. falling through the 40s in the afternoon. the wind will be picking up. saturday is going to be your day to get in yard work. here's your accuweather 7-day. next week low 40s and windy on

here's the good news with the bruins tonight. they only letp perhaps the only good news in the big picture. steven burton joins us. a little doimg tonight. >> no question. if you're a fan this one stings a little bit. they went three in a row. they gave up a goal with 45 seconds left in the game. the only goal of the game. they lose in minnesota 1-0 to the wild. the bruins scored first. jammed one in from right in

hold everything. let's check out the replay. the bruins would call for offsides. offsides and the goal was over turned. that proved huge. the wild go wild. only goal goes off the bruins' adam mcquaid and in to the net. bruins lose a heartbreaker 1-0. baseball now and mookie betts did not win the most valuable player award. he finished second trout. patriots are heading west to take on the 1-8 49ers. san francisco won on opening night and haven't won since. with or without robert gronkowski it should be a good game for them. what makes a tight end position for the patriots so special is that we have two very talented
