okay? this is not okay. >> reporter: -- pled not guilty in court. the 23-year-old has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the death. >> i want all of them arrested. >> reporter: his mother didn't deserve this he says. the mother of four children was viciously beaten and possibly run over by a car a group of people were thrown out of a party. she was hit in the head with a bottle. >> the defendant had hit the victim with a hennessy bottle, striking her. and after she went down, mr. tavares -- martin tavares had possibly run her over with a

pronounced dead. this was a group assault. >> there was absolutely no showing that the assault with the bottle caused in any way a fatal injury leading to the death of the individual. >> it's hard for me to hear all this stuff that happened to my mother, all the injuries she got. >> perez is being held on $30,000 cash bail. december 19th for a probable cause hearing. breaking news tonight. former house speaker sal de- macey is back in massachusetts. he spent the past five years at a federal prison in north carolina.

the terminal as sal demasey came into the terminal after landing at logan airport. getting hugs from members of the family. he and his wife are expected to go back to their apartment in melrose. obviously an emotional scene. >> we heard the cancer was in remission and the chemotherapy made it difficult for him to swallow. and he choking. and he's very happy to be back in massachusetts. he's lost a lot of weight. his wife has been arguing for a compassionate release. >> reporter: our reporter tells us they are expected to make a brief comment. let's see if they -- as they make it closer to the cameras if they stop to talk for a few moments. once he gets home.

traffic jam alerts from ways last year on tuesday. >> reporter: tuesday has become the new worst thanksgiving travel day. >> i came out a little bit early prior to the holiday so i could spend the holiday with my daughter who lives in boston. >> wednesday, brighton avenue was the worst spot. >> reporter: 495 and 84. >> the choke points we have had in the past are most likely going to be significantly decreased. the hope is that we'll see less congestion than in past years. >> reporter: what about the return trip? >> i think i'll leave early on sunday and hopefully miss it. >> last year traffic jam alerts were up 240% that day.

to make matters worse, tomorrow ways says they had more routed trips to supermarkets and airports than any other day of the year. if you're not traveling to get somewhere or return somewhere you're running errands or going to pick someone up. you can't get around all the traffic. >> once you get there, there's a lot of food. >> and you need a jet pack. the chill in the air appropriate for the upcoming holiday. >> weather is going to be cooperating with your plans unless you're traveling this morning. eric fisher that has details. >> reporter: a little bit of wintry weather towards the end of the week. tonight feels like winter. it's below freezing in worcester. boston at 39. a chilly but bright day and the wind gusts out of the northwest. now they are 20 to 30 miles per

and tomorrow i think will be the pick of the week. up and down the eastern seaboard, no weather issues. this is the next system that could bring us thanksgiving snow. 19 to 26 for the low temps. boston will see a low around 30 degrees. on thanksgiving, watching a chance for light snowfall and maybe spotty, freezing drizzle. the best spot would be in northern worcester county and northern and we'd mainly be talking about rain showers in southeastern massachusetts as temperatures would be too warm to talk about snowfall. and friday morning a chance for freezing drizzle. keep an eye on the holiday forecast any time with the cbs boston weather app. it's free in the google or apple app stores. five children killed in a horrific school bus crash and

crashed on purpose. liam martin is here with the story. >> reporter: federal investigators now on that scene of the deadly wreck. the driver in custody, facing homicide charges and something he said to the kids right before the crash suggests this was no accident. a tow truck hauled away the wreckage of the school bus that carried 35 woodmore elementary it killed one boy and four girls. >> jasmine ma teen lost one of her three children on the bus. the mother made serious allegations about the driver to cbs news. >> right before the bus flipped he was speeding and asked them are you all ready to die?

>> and we got the big one in a week or so. and that should be a cool seasonal thing. some folks taking advantage of it. and it was free for a while as well. wintry scenes and last thanksgiving it was near 60 degrees in boston. a little different this time around. and definitely cold enough to keep the ice alive. 39 right now in boston. the breeze out of the northwest at 15 miles per of all the highest point in new england, sitting at 70 degrees and cold across the northeast. we're going to stay in this pattern for a while. the snow letting up across the northeast. we've had a cloudy day across the interior. and this is the next system that we're watching. it's going to bring us a little bit of wintry weather as we head to thanksgiving itself. as for the wind it stays gusty.

definitely a bundle up kind of a night. still breezy out of the northwest but the wind subsides and it will start to feel more tolerable. a couple of degrees warmer and lots of sunshine and less wind. so a cool but nice day tomorrow. we're back in the 20s. and i wouldn't be surprised if the colder spots dip into the teens by tomorrow morning. a chilly start to the day. clear and cold. and sunrise is 6:45 for a big travel all you need is the sunglasses. dry up and down the eastern sea boards. around 40 at lunchtime. and highs will be in the 40s across the area. our sunset is at 4:16 tomorrow. looking at the highs, mainly in the mid-40s. mildest to the south coast and the cape. and coldest across central mass. most of the weather that we're watching is at the tail end. as we head into thanksgiving. overcast skies and light wintry

of light snowfall and a touch of freezing drizzle. and friday, an on shore flow will keep us locked into the clouds, a little bit of drizzle and a snow shower mixed in. and talk chilly air. i think the cold will stay locked in across the interior. we could still have freezing drizzle heading to friday morning, especially in northern worcester county. we're talking coatings, maybe an inch and getting into southern new hampshire. and cape cod and the south shore, likely too warm for snow. and rain showers on thanksgiving day. a big event, the feast or five. cloudy, 31 degrees. and a chance for a few flurries, and no major issues, just cold. and highs on thanksgiving, low to mid-30s well inland. 40 in boston. and low 40s to the cape and the islands. i mentioned friday a gloomy day
