live from the channel 4 studios in boston, wbz news at 4:30 starts now with breaking news. >> former house speaker sal demasey just got back to massachusetts. you can see the images here. he spent the past five years in a north carolina federal prison after being convicted of giving state contracts in exchange for kickbacks. he's looking forward to family. >> i want to thank everybody for making this possible. it's a very emotional day for me. it's been a trying and difficult experience for me. and i'm looking forward to just being reunited with my family and my community and my friends. >> reporter: the 71-year-old is battling cancer and last week a

looking for answers. why weren't they told of a 6- year-old boy accused of sexually assaulting others on a school bus. the details are disturbing. >> reporter: school officials contacted parents after the reports circulated on social media. and tonight they are calling for transparency. >> reporter: the school says given the age of the child, appropriate measures were authorities were notified and the age prevents a criminal investigation. they are hoping the city looks at ways to better protect children. >> it was disturbing news for parents. claims of sexual molestation by a child as young as six years old on a school bus. >> i think if we would have been able to know. >> reporter: the allegations

the boston renaissance charter school was made aware a couple of weeks ago. the 6-year-old boy forcing other students to perform sex acts. he beats on them and says he's bringing a gun to school. >> it's a safety issue and the city or whoever runs the buses needs to deal with that. they need to put people on the buses to monitor the kids. >> monitors are used on some school department says outfitting all routes would cost $7 million. >> the issue is the cost and making sure that we can put -- how do you do it appropriately? >> reporter: the charter school is bound by confidentiality with a child so young, and also tying the age of boston police. parents wanted information

the game on thanksgiving will be played on the new turf. >> we were thrilled that they were working together with the architect, our attorney, the insurance people, everyone who has pitched in and focused on purchasing. >> the city planned to take out a large loan to pay for the work. and now that loan is unnecessary. the mayor tells us he hopes the insurer will pay for that as well. and he festival's producers for reimbursement. the school bus crash in tennessee has renewed the debate about seat belts in school buses. one state lawmaker wants to change that. here's david robichaud. >> reporter: while the school bus idles. students roam the halls, learning about how laws are made. the bus has seat belts but most

up. >> reporter: state representative antonio cabral has tried several times to pass a law for seat belts. >> we've been pushing this legislation for three or four sessions. and it's a common sense legislation, a public safety legislation. newton bucks the national trend. they do have they don't have them? >> it's hard to say. it's almost as if they don't believe it's a valuable safety feature. >> reporter: the school transportation association has opposed belts on buses in the past citing expense and time needed to install equipment. >> reporter: the organization has walked away from the negotiation cable. >> we attempted to reach them. the industry -- before the session ises were over.

back. >> reporter: meanwhile, some can't believe safety hasn't been improved. >> reporter: are you surprised that a lot of communities don't have them? >> it's shocking and what happened in tennessee, it may be the only silver lining. >> reporter: in newton, david robichaud, wbz news. whether seat belts on buses truly makes things safer is debatable. buses are seat backs and a reinforced shell to protect kids. >> every bus should have a three point seat belt. only california requires them on buses. it would be an expensive fix, as much as $10,000 for every bus. teachers in lawrence are coming together to try to help after fire destroyed

flashed a gun. and one used a hammer to smash glass and steal $300,000 worth of watches. they have not been found but no one was hurt. an airline pilot had to battle extreme cross winds in gibraltar. you can see the plane pitching down and correcting before sticking the landing. you can hear the applauding. and no massive tsunami in japan but the 6.9 quake did trigger large waves which you can see traveling up the river in the area. there were concerns that -- but it was so far out that it didn't cause a massive tsunami.

difference. we have just flipped the switch. and we'll hold in this pattern for a while. today's high in boston, 43 degrees. and average is 49. we're at that point of the year where any day over 50 is a good day. just the way it goes this time of the season. seasonal changes in new england. we get something different every month. temps in the 30s, at 31. and out to the berkshires, the snow is on the ground. 28degrees in pitfield. and not as windy as yesterday. at times -- the snow finally winding down across northern new england and new york state. the next system will bring us a little bit of wintry weather for the thanksgiving as well as friday. for tonight though, how about

the city around 30 degrees and the winds out of the northwest at times gusting over 20. great travel weather. all you need are the sunglasses. cold morning, chilly afternoon. and the wind subsiding. and northwest breeze at five to 15, a nice break, and then for the evening, quiet and chilly and sun sets at 4:16. and we'll be dry up and down the eastern seaboard. highs in the mid-40s for most. and near 40 degrees in centr higher elevations. when it comes to thanksgiving. we're watching the chance for light snow to break out. it will start in the morning and maybe spotty freezing drizzle. we're looking at up to an inch so not a big event but setting the mood across the area. and there might be a few slick spots on the roads. as for morning football on thursday, low 30s, light snow,

problems. and close to 40 in boston, low 40s towards the cape, south coast, and the islands. this is where we'll see rain showers. too warm to see snowfall or icy conditions. so no travel problems, friday we've gone at on shore flow that will keep us socked into the clouds, it's overcast on thursday as well as friday. and it will stay cold enough to see freezing drizzle. northern worcester county we yay glaze. the sun finally coming back out on sunday. but a gloomy and chilly strew stretch until that point. the rain and snow showers on friday. and snow showers on saturday and looks like the best chance of snow on sunday would be across new hampshire and maine. sunday we bring back the sun

>> reporter: demasey arrived off a flight from raleigh in a wheelchair, surrounded by his wife and his two stepchildren. he spoke briefly and very softly. and despite his frailty, he is a fighter. in 2011, sal demasey was convicted of federal corruption and sent to a north carolina prison. he was diagnosed with throat choking sessions and medical procedures to help him swallow. his wife fought for a compassionate release. after five years, it was granted. this will be a very special thanksgiving for him. >> grateful and thankful that i'm home in boston where i love my family. i want to thank everybody for
