just a couple of flurries, this is not going to be a big issue today. rain showers fill in by this evening. good morning everybody. happy thanksgiving. 35 in boston right now. 30 in worcester, 29 in keene. low 30s, manchester. i think one of the biggest diffl notice this morning is that the wind has gone calm in many spots still 7 miles per hour in boston but definitely subsided over the really strong wind we've had the past couple of days. wind chill in the 20s in we've been the past few mornings. overcast skies and i'm watching a couple of flurries and snow showers in western connecticut that's what's going to work north and west. it's a chilly start. sunrise at 6:46. heading to the turkey trots football games temperatures rise out of the 30s. cloudy and cool by mid-day, 42 degrees, rain showers do develop this evening and fill in generally between 5 and 7 p.m.

in the upper 30s and sunset at 4:15. i'll let you know where i'm concerned about a couple of slick spots for black friday coming up. luckily no slick spots out there right now. traffic moving along just fine on the zakim bridge and the connector just a handful of cars whether you're heading north or south on 93. breaking news a deadly start to the thanksgiving holiday one person killed in a wrong-way crash on the very latest. >> reporter: state police say a driver going the wrong way on 495 south was killed early this morning when they slammed into another car. that scene cleared about an hour ago. and all lanes are back open. take a look at this video from earlier this morning. you can see the front of a red car is mangled. and facing a white suv. it's unclear which car was traveling in the wrong direction. state police say around 2:00 this morning they received reports

and 14. patrols rushed to the area but say when they got there the wrong-way driver had crashed into an oncoming vehicle. again, that wrong-way driver is dead, police say the other person was taken to rhode island hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. police won't release the victim's name until the family has been notified, and they are investigating how and why that driver got on the highway going the wrong way. police tell me they have holiday and reminding everyone to be extra careful pay attention to the speed limits the signs and not to drink and drive. new this morning a missing woman has been found. police say the 73-year old was found overnight. her family had reported her missing yesterday when she didn't return home from the store. 2 neighbors rushed to rescue an elderly man trapped inside his burning home one of those

when they saw the flames coming from the home. knowing a man in his 80s lived inside they didn't hesitate charging into the building and saving his life. >> i went over and kicked the door open and he was laying right there. >> the smoke was so thick that we couldn't move beyond a foot into the house >> they didn't stop and know that they're elderly neighbor was home. it would have been a disaster. >> the smoke was so bad they several times but rescuers say he was conscious and alert when he was taken to the hospital last night. because see supermarket parking lot turns into a crash scene the night before thanksgiving. police say a woman was backing up her car when she hit an employee who was pushing shopping carts and 6 other cars. that workers and the driver were both taken to the hospital for evaluation but thankfully their injuries are not serious. >> he got hit by her vehicle and

know how long. department really say but he was conscious and alert, complained of a little pain but nothing, no visible broken bones or anything. >> emergency crews on scene say the driver was not clear about exactly what had happened. so far police have not said whether she will face charges. this morning we're hearing from the wife of a man badly burned while putting up his holiday display. that freak accident in new hampshire sent 20,000 volts surging through the man's body. . >> an explosion, and looked out could smell that, you know that burning afterwards smell. laying flat, then his eyes started rolling back in his head and i just kept slapping his face and saying say with me, stay with me. >> he was trying to hang christmas lights using a metal pole when he accidentally hit the power line to his home. fortunately it was touching the ground so his body didn't take the full impact. doctors tell

crews working late into the night to get everything ready for today's macy's thanksgiving day parade. those big balloons already in place and 3 million people are expected to line streets today. >> but it's not just the parade organizers that are hard at work. police are working overtime to keep everyone safe. . >> reporter: members of new york's finest began taking position along central park west overnight gearing up to protect millions spectators expected at the thanksgiving day parade. . >> nypd is going to mount an even stronger operation this year. >> reporter: new york city mayor detailed many of the unprecedented security plans last night. dozens of sanitation trucks blocking off cross town traffic for the first time in the parade's 90-year history, and officers on the ground using radiation detectors, bomb sniffing dogs and other devices. . >> all of our police officers each an every one of them are

we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country strengthened by shared purpose and very common resolve. . >> mr. trump added with the political campaign over it's time for a great national campaign to rebuild our country. the president elect is spending the thanksgiving holiday at his estate in palm beach florida. and president obama and the first family served thanksgiving meals to retired membe o military in washington last night. there are about 400 veterans at the armed forces retirement home there, and the president thanked the men and women for their service. part of the first family flew the coupe ahead of another tradition the final turkey pardon. his daughters skipped the ceremony and instead he was joined by his nephews. the president says it's been a

master mind behind this incredible event. >> yeah, we have been taking care of community since 1971, it's our 45th anniversary. we invite everyone from around the south shore to come here and enjoy a free thanksgiving dinner here with our family. >> reporter: and you just got the final numbers into as to how many people you'll actual serve today. >> 868 people we're expected to have here. cooked about 500 pounds of turkey. the fire chiefs from the south shore community here about to start making the potatoes. >> reporter: let's walk a little bit. we've got a few more seconds. what exactly is going on. >> we're going to be doing a 4 course meal starting with soup followed by our famous pasta. so we've got some kettles going right now. out back is the soup and doing a full thanksgiving

today for sure. weather is not too busy today. a flurry or 2, but overall pretty quiet weather today until this evening when some rain showers are going to fill in. here are your thanksgiving extremes for boston, a little bit of talk points for the dinner table. warmest back in 1971 we were 71 degrees, coldest way back in 1873, 2.6 inches of rain back in 1971, and do you remember 1989 we had 4.4 inches of snow. so we c today. 35 in boston right now. the one thing you'll notice is d isn't nearly as strong. 28 in plymouth, 31 in bedford. 32 in lawrence, and lower 40s bn to nantucket. heading

mid-to upper 30s. if you see a couple of flakes flying a little bit on the chilly side as well. we're overcast in most spots. tracking a couple of light flurries in western connecticut just to the west side of hartford right now. this is going to move north and east and bring us a few flurries, what i'm more concerned with is this next batch of moisture. that is what's going to move in later on today. so most of the mid-day, early afternoon is d rule out a flurry or 2. by early afternoon we get pockets of rain an snow showers and scattered rain showers fill in generally between 5 and 7 p.m., notice mixed with snow from southwest new hampshire north back up through the central and northern portion of vermont. overnight tonight rain continues it will be light for the most part but if you're up early staying up for the black friday deals it is certainly going to

a fly over. these are the decals the football team will be wearing on their helmets. they have the massachusetts state police logo. the trooper's wife told the globe he loved thanksgiving and always made sure to get the day off to spend time with his family. the 2 boston police officers injured in the shoot out last month were honored the last night. the boston bruins cintolo dropped the first pucks. they were badly injured in that shoot out with the suspect who ambushed them. cintolo just got out of the hospital this week. all the money raised goes to the 2 families. >> good to see them doing well. still ahead the new rule this year many families are saying no politics at the dinner table. >> why some local lawmakers say it's a good idea. >> plus why you could end up paying more shopping online this

state police tell me they have extra patrols on the roads for the holiday and reminding everyone to be extra careful this morning, pay attention to the signs and the speed limits and not to drink and drive. 2 men raised to rescue their elderly neighbor trapped inside a burning home. they found the 88-year old in his kitchen unable to get up and together they fought through the thick black smoke to drag him to safety. the fire department says man may not have survived. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire. tragedy in detroit the officer shot on patrol has died. the officer was 29 years old. he was investigating possible car break ins at the time. a 6th child has died from injuries in that horrific school bus crash in tennessee. 37 students were onboard when the

part of the scheduled route. tests found no traces of alcohol or drugs in his system. more than 3 million people are expected to watch the famous macy's thanksgiving day parade in person today and for the first time in the history sanitation trucks filled with sand will block off cross town traffic. officers on the ground will use specially trained detection dogs to prevent any attacks. while there has suggested the parade would be tempting target. if you're planning to deep fry your turkey today you're going to want to make sure you know exactly what you're doing. the fire protection association setup this demonstration so show why it does not recommend a gas fueled fire to put a turkey in. to protect yourself stay in the kitchen the whole time there is food on the

tradition my friend and i. probably for over 10 years. we want to help the people that are served here today that come from all the communities and we're very proud that we could help the family too because they've been very generous to these communities. >> reporter: what does it mean to you? obviously thanksgiving is about being with your family but we recognize that there are some people who don't have that luxury. >> right we're fortunate because we've always come very early in the morning so we d miss our families. we can serve the purpose of helping the community at the same time coming in here very early. >> reporter: i don't want to stop the production. >> it's all going good. >> reporter: yeah. so if you just take a look here of course you see carlos showing you all of these potatoes. we just heard from the head chief that well over 350 pounds of potatoes will be served. here's some other retired firefighters as

part. we're told that milton retired fire chief, brookline, just quite a few other people who are here helping as well. so they've got a few more hours to go before all the guests will start to arrive around 10:30 this morning and enjoy this amazing feast. back to you. similar scenes are playing out around new england. the woman coordinating the meal at first church has been doing this the meal will cook and serve turkey and hand dinners to more than 1,500 people. the team is expected to start serving around 9 a.m. this year plenty of families will be enforcing a no politics rule at the dinner table and that includes some local politicians a recent poll says americans expect politic to say come up today. here in

turkeys than the state gaming commission? their licenses have been a litany of disappointments and delays while competing states are moving forward. while by law they're supposed to help economic struggling areas they rejected a casino plan that would have brought desperately needed jobs and investment another government turkey the long awa extension so wildly over budget that the plans had to be scrapped earlier this year. state officials hope to sell advantage a scaled down plan but they'll need generous funding from a president without a single ally. good luck with that. how did schilling one of our greatest local sports heroes turn into a

boston, low 40s in mash arefield. so a cool chilly start. mostly cloudy skies overcast in many areas. this little area of moisture very thin band as some snow flurries moving north and east out of hartford now and may see a flurry or 2 in eastern massachusetts i'm not expecting an impact, accumulation, you may get a quick dusting. that is about it. and that may linger to mid-day in a few areas. it's n western pennsylvania that will fill in as we head into the late afternoon and evening. in fact, most of the morning to early afternoon will be dry, just a chilly feel on this thanksgiving day. through mid-afternoon some rain and snow showers develop, these spread east and fill in between 5 and 7 p.m. as scattered rain showers for most of us. eastern vermont, central and northern new hampshire will be mixed with some snow. could see a couple

done particularly in far northern new england. watch for slippery spots there. otherwise if you're headed out for black friday deals overnight tonight or early tomorrow morning you want to have the raincoat with you. we'll have these pockets of light rain. drizzle. black friday overall will featuh rain that will continue through the early evening hours tomorrow but generally light. so most of us inch of rain. forecast highs today lower 40s so still below average but not feeling quite as cold as the past few days because that wind will be light and should hover in the upper 30s. we do go 45 to 50 from the south shore. and again some scattered showers filling in this evening. the showers will continue tonight. 40 downtown, 32 to 39 in the suburbs.

there may be one or 2 slick spots very early tomorrow morning northern worcester county back through western vermont and western new hampshire. so just be aware of that. highs tomorrow 45 to 50 and then to start the weekend most of the wet weather pushes out on saturday. partly sunny skies. on sunday clouds may fill back in. i do think the weekend will be mainly dry, temperatures for the weekend will generally be running in the 40s for most of us as and in fact it's going to be below average in many areas right on through the start of next week with temperatures climbing into the 50s by the time we get to wednesday. >> always love a warm up. thank you very much. let's get you out on the roads this morning if you're heading to any early destinations on this thanksgiving day. here's a shot of the expressway by the gas tank you can see it's moving along pretty nicely right now. so far to problems right now as
