police say a more complex picture of the attack has emerged. >> a male suspect drove a vehicle over the curb and struck pedestrians. he exited the vehicle and used a butcher knife to start cutting pedestrians. our officers were on scene in less than a minute and ended the situation in less than a minute. >> nine people were quickly transmitted to hospitals. >> there we related to lacerations or cuts most likely from the stab wounds from the butcher knife. and a number of people had orthopedic and soft issue injuries related to being hit by the car. >> officials are working with the university to learn more about the suspect and a possible motive. terrorism has not been ruled out. >> we'll continue to work with the students, faculty, and staff to make this the safest

>> reporter: it's agreed that the quick actions of the first responders might have saved many lives. school officials with urging students to let their loved ones know they're okay. classes are expected to resume tomorrow. run, hide, fight. that's the message of advice the school sent out to ohio state students during the attack. and one student from massachusetts told us just story. >> reporter: she plans to graduate in may. the school has had bomb threats before but nothing as crazy as what happened today. fear and anxiety permeated the campus. osu senior grace ashworth says she was in class and got the

to happen to your campus. >> reporter: the moments that followed the attack were terrifying. she was in lockdown for more than an hour. >> it wasn't -- yeah, it wasn't calm at all. everyone was making sure that all their loved ones were safe. >> reporter: numerous law enforcement officers converged on campus and some students barricaded themselves in classrooms. >> i tex friends and roommates and i'm so happy that nothing happened to me and i wasn't near the scene. and i'm worried about the people that are injured and i hope they're okay. >> all of the classmates returned to dorm rooms and spent the day calling and texting loved ones back home and letting them know they are safe. >> we got video of the vehicle

on the sidewalk. the suspect used the car to deliberately drive into the students. kids heard the engine rev and thought it was an accident. and realized when the suspect stepped out of the car with a butcher knife, this was no accident. wbz security analyst ed davis says officials at ohio state were prepared and acted just the way they should have. quickly getting word to students and staff that there was an emergency. >> the fact th within a minute or two of the assault and then within maybe just two hours they're having a press conference explaining what happened. all of that shows a university that's very coordinated. >> and the 28-year-old officer took the suspect down. we'll have more on the wbz news at 6:00 and the cbs evening news with scott pelley. as pretty as it was today,

freezing rain in time for the morning drive. not great timing but we need precipitation. >> we'll be followed by the much needed rainfall. good and bad in the forecast. we had the beautiful sunshine today. and clear skies for a time and the clouds will be thickening up overnight. and there's a sprawling storm system off to the west. a chance for a little bit of icy weather as we head into tomorrow morning's commute. the clouds will be on the increase, and overnight lows boston. freezing rain advisory for northern worcester county. and western mass and the main time frame is 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. for tomorrow. if it were me -- i'm not in charge -- i would spread it to southern new hampshire so all areas should be on the lookout for icy spots and a bit of wintry mix into new hampshire and maine. clouds increasing overnight. again around dawn, very light

a chance for the icy spots. then we all get rain and it will come down heavily at times. we'll talk about totals and a second round of rain for wednesday coming up in a few minutes. this was a crime caught on camera, a very closeup camera as you can see. a man broke into the shrine of st. anthony in boston and tonight's behind bars. when police into custody they found stolen items on him, including religious relics. a drug ordered him held on $25,000 bail. officials in new hampshire deny donald trump's claims of election fraud there. christina hager is live tonight with the story in concord.

hampshire, election officials sort of pride themselves on running a tight ship. this is a state where voters have to show photo i.d. when casting ballots so this tweet hit a nerve. >> reporter: as quickly as donald trump called the process into question, election officials played defense. >> the commission met today as they are required and they had no appeals to take up. >> repor tweet, the president-elect fired off this allegation. serious voter fraud in virginia, new hampshire, and california. why isn't the media reporting on this. >> i think he needs to eliminate the tweets and get on with running the country. >> do you have confidence in the electoral system in new hampshire? >> i do, i do. >> the state attorney general's office is looking into four fraud claims. >> specifically, people voting in the wrong place.

clinton won here by more than 2700 votes. >> trump's tweet was part of his reaction to green party jill stein'sed by for recounts in other battleground states. pennsylvania, wisconsin, and michigan. it's a move that hillary clinton's campaign is backing. new hampshire's democratic governor who won this battleground state's senate race by 743 votes sent out statement. >> his tweet is completely unsubstantiated and claims of voter fraud in new hampshire have earned a rating of pants on fire. pants on fire is the lowest rating given by the fact checking group politico. some claimed that voters were

retailers, and better for consumers. uber and lyft agreed to have their drivers undergo background checks. this is a rare sighting of one of the hardest to find toad species in the bay state. a biologist snapped these shots of a toad on plum island. the reptiles can live underground and last time in dry, sandy, environments. we definitely have had a dry environment. >> maybe that's why we seen that toad. >> we have a picture of the lynn reservoir. this really hits home. you can see how low it is. >> via drone. a lot of people visited family and friends, and maybe you passed these lakes and reservoirs, and you can tell

you're down about 10 feet. that's a lot of missing water. and illustrates the point of how much work we have to do to get back to a good state. it's only rained once. we've had a couple of showery days. on the 15th. we had a good day of downpours, running a 2 1/2 inch deficit in boston. and this is a multiyear type of thing. if we look at the last five years, almost every ons the worst and a 30-inch rainfall deficit going over the five years. so a lot of work to be done. here's the storm system that we're tracking. it's mostly a wet storm system and it's going to run into cold air at the on set. and we're at 35 in hyannis. 33 in orange. 37 in norwood. there's a window for the next few hours with calm winds and clear skies. and we'll fall back to the 20s.

this sets the stage for a chance for iciness. this is the area to watch. worcester northward to new hampshire and western mass and areas outside of 128. and temperatures will likely be at or below freezing. and that can create an icy glaze in the morning commute. especially focusing from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. you can see that first band moving in. and the biggest question mark tomorrow is will ground. will it be so light that barely any of it reaches the surface. the longer it takes to reach the ground, the lower chances we have for icy spots. this is a spot to keep a close eye on weather conditions. and then from lunchtime on ward it warms up. and we have regular rainfall. throughout the afternoon into the evening. heavy at times, especially south of the pike. and that can create some nasty driving conditions through the

but it would be warm enough for just rain. tomorrow evening we see the highest temperatures, in the 50s from boston southward. and staying in the 40s north and west. wednesday is our next round of rainfall. morning starts dry. and afternoon, heavier rain starts to swing in and that will last until wednesday night before we dry out thursday morning. a couple of rounds of much and it's a guideline, not verbatim. we have a good shot at 1 to 3 inches of total rainfall. very much needed. tomorrow morning, we're watching for ice. wednesday morning we're mainly dry. and wednesday evening that drive will be a wet one. and we'll slow things down. and then quieter conditions. thursday, mild. and friday, dry for us. and saturday and sunday also dry and a little bit chillier

live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz news at 5:30. now at 5:30. a hit-and-run caught on camera has turned deadly. the man hit as he was leaving a bar died from his injuries. the 25-year-old victim was from brockton. >> police tell us the driver turned himself in over the weekend. bill shields brockton, bill -- friends were out drinking and came here friday morning and stepped out in the street. a car hit one of them, killing him. he lived for several hours, he has now died. but the driver that hit him in the street took off northbound. and we're told that someone of interest came to police and turned himself in but has not been arrested.
