afternoon as the clouds decrease. so your planner goes this way, showers ending for rush hour, breezy and mild with sun and clouds, 56 through lunchtime and fair and quiet, 50 degrees for the ride home with a sunset at 4:12. we'll take you out through the weekend coming up. let's get you on the roads. kate, how's it looking? >>reporter: 5:02, a live look at the zakim right now. things picking up, but still free and clear into the city. all roads are wide open right now on your thursday morning, but it is wet outside on that. breaking overnight, a police chase ends with a crash in brockton, and this morning officers are looking for two people. >> anna myler is live in brockton this morning with the very latest. anna. >>reporter: kate, police tell me they responded to reports of shots fired on ford street around 12:30 this morning. when officers got there, they say they tried to pull over a toyota camry. that's when that car took off. police sped after the vehicle, chasing it through brockton.

chase ended with a crash. the cruiser colliding with the suspect vehicle after the driver stopped and parked it on pleasant street. both the driver and a passenger got out and ran. police are still looking for those two people, but they say they don't believe there is any risk to public safety at this point. that officer has minor injuries and is expected to be okay. reporting live from brockton police station, anna myler, wbz this morning. also breaking overnight, a police officer shot while responding to a domestic violence ca state has died. police think the suspect is holed up inside a tacoma home. the neighborhood is now on lockdown, and a woman and two children inside of the house are safe. the officer killed has not been identified. a teenager is headed to court today, charged with murdering his mother in their home. his grandmother able to escape and get help. nicole jacobs is live in brockton this morning with more on this story. nicole. >>reporter: kate, police have not commented on a possible

year-old son yesterday and made the determination to arrest him and charge him with his mother's murder. inside this brockton home at 34 merit avenue violence and tragedy struck. a mother murdered, allegedly at the hands of her son while the grandmother escaped. >> i knew it was something bad, only because she was wailing and screaming and she did say 911, 911. >>reporter: mary anne montero rushed to the >> the grandson came lunging at us, and i pulled her out of there. >>reporter: firefighters arrived to find 18-year-old france polinnese outside. >> they just went around him, went around the back side of the deck, went into the house, came out and put him on top of the car and sat on him until the cops got here. >>reporter: investigators say 74-year-old men glp krin mened was stabbed to death. wbz has learned that a knife was recovered at the scene.

>> we need to find out exactly what happened, but a mother/son relationship and for it to end this way, it's terrible, it's tragic and we need to make sure we find out what happened. >>reporter: that 18-year-old is expected to be arraigned here in brockton district court today. we're live in brockton, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. 5:05 right now. all public schools in palmer are closed today after a threat was spray painted on a sign outside the high school. this photo here, it was posted on palmer high it reads shooting along with today's date. the person who shared the picture said the other side of that sign read kill along with the time. all classes and after-school activities are canceled for today. police and school officials are investigating. police stepping up patrols at a new england mosque after it received a hate-filled letter warning muslims to leave the country or face genocide. the morphing in providence is just one of -- the mosque in providence is just one of the mosques in seven states states that received the identical letters. the fbi says there are no specific threats for them to

monitoring the situation, and they're urging people to report any incidents. police here say they haven't received a formal request for increased security at boston- area mosques, but they are ready to provide it if needed. a campus controversy ends with a compromise. a painting depicting ku klux klan members will recommend at an art exhibit, but now you'll have to lift up a drape to look at it. the art exhibit at salem state university was scheduled to reopen yesterday. it will run through december 14th. the exhibit is meant to by the recent elections. a missive water main break repair -- massive massive water main break repaired in boston. workers have been working to repave the sidewalk and road in front of washington street. the water rose to the coffee and wine barria hoe. it didn't affect anyone's water display, but -- water supply, but it did close several restaurants. >> we have to get all this done

comes. >> the break also caused three underground electrical fires sending thick toxic smoke into the air that forced the evacuation of more than 100 people from a a former town chef in carver is accused of stealing from the food pantry where he worked for more than six years. chef david levoi, his girlfriend tracy archer and their daughter kimberly parkman are charged with larceny and conspiracy. police say surveillance video shows the three of them stealing food on the weekends from the carver food pantry. lavoy is even accused of making his own special orders on the charity's dime. >> he was responsible for ordering items which is what makes it difficult to determine how far back we go. but in his ordering of items, one of the things that became suspicious was he decided to order buffalo chicken wings. >> carver is now asking for all food donations to be made to the shane gibbs thanks pantry on main street instead. at least five people are

southeast. officials in alabama, louisiana, mississippi and tennessee are all assessing the damage this morning. >>reporter: search and rescue teams fanned out across parts of the southeast into the night. >> we've got crews out doing home searches, making sure everybody is okay. >>reporter: as residents in alabama took stock of the devastation around them. in the small town of rosa lee yesterday, a tornado ripped apart homes and businesses and killed three people waiting out the storm home. jim smith knew one of them. >> it was a friend of mine's daughter. that's why my business is gone, no big deal. i'll get it all together and restart. >>reporter: 100 miles north, mark fall k, jr, a georgia firefighter and his wife sondra were kill whd an ef-3 tornado struck polk county in tennessee. >> he loved the fire department, he loved what it represented, he loved working with the neighbors and the kids. >>reporter: at least five other counties in the state were also hit.

story of a family who escaped the worst. >> a baby was born at the local hospital, with that a family's house had been destroyed. >>reporter: the twisters were part of an on slawt of severe weather that also plagued parts of georgia, louisiana and mississippi where powerful winds flipped cars and even 18- wheelers >> we're really lucky that nobody was hurt here tonight. it could be the other way. >>reporter: the storm system also moved through and closing roads. cbs news. president-elect donald trump travels to indiana today where he and vice president- elect mike pence are expected to announce more about the deal to keep jobs from being outsourced to mexico. federal officials briefed by carrier air conditioning say the agreement will keep about 800 union jobs in indiana, about 1,400 workers were set to be laid off. carrier says incentives offered by the state of indiana were, quote, an important

and vice presidential nominee sarah palin may be up for a job in the trump administration. the "new york times" reports palin is being considered for secretary of veterans affairs, the same job former bay state senator scott brown is up for. a recount of the presidential election is set to begin in wisconsin today. green party candidate jill stein asked for the recount there as well as michigan and pennsylvania. president-elect trump narrowly won all three states. now, the recount is not expected to change the of the election. also today both trump and hillary clinton's campaign managers will be at harvard to speak at a forum offering insight into the election. congresswoman nancy pelosi keeping her job as minority leader. she was re-elected yesterday after facing a challenge from ohio congressman tim ryan. pelosi has been in charge of house democrats since 2002. 5:10 right now on your thursday morning. coming up, slow down ahead. >> boston officials changing the speed limit on city streets. what you need to know and when

november. last year it took all the way to the middle of january until we got an inch of snow at logan airport. drying out this morning. there are still some areas of rain around. you notice this batch over rhode island and now entering bristol county. it's going to move over the southeast part of the state in the next hour or so. light showers. this one batch exiting the outer cape. still light rain, though, along route 6 and down through orleans. taunton, somerset, you're getting back into some light rain. this will lift through plymouth county, again, in the next 45 mostly inside of 495 and eastern mass as well, but another batch from leomaster from holden. you'll need the wipers on intermittently. this is all going to cross 93 in central new hampshire in the next 45 minutes or so. it is 61 in taunton right now. talk about a mild start for december. 49 in boston, 45 in wocester. so mild across the board.

we will get increasing sunshine. notice we're warm enough, obviously to have rain here in southern new england, but it's actually a wet, pasty snow, five to eight inches falling right now in parts of northern maine. for the rest of us, we start to see the rain depart between now and 7:00 a.m. it is out of here. sunshine breaks out, highs 55 to 60. it'll be a little bit breezy and that's the theme the next several days. quiet end to the week. couple mountain snow showers tomorrow, sun and clouds for us here in saturday sunshine, a few clouds mixed in, a little breezy and that northwest wind drags in some cooler air. so for saturday and on sunday we'll kind of take it down a notch in terms of temperatures. so well above average today by about 10 degrees. 58 in boston, middle to upper 50s lawrence, bedford, norwood, down through the cape and the islands as well. a few clouds tonight, 32, 38 in the suburbs. we'll be about 40 in downtown boston. the wind chill at times tonight will be in the 20s in spots

but we'll still be above average, running 45 to 50 with sun and clouds for highs tomorrow. seven-day forecast brings us out to more normal temperatures for this time of the year for the weekend, mid-40s on saturday. sunday a little chilly, sun and clouds, looking good for the pats at gillette stadium. there'll be a wind about 5 to 15 miles an hour, so shouldn't be a huge issue. could be a flurry or two on monday and then around 40 through mid week. chris >> thank you very much, danielle. let's taing a look at the -- a look at the mass pike for yoma city from out west. you can see a couple of brake lights out there, but so far no major problems out there. a couple of ponding spots on the roads this morning, so take it easy in those typical areas where water does collect on the roads. drivers are going to have to slow down on boston streets. the boston city council voted yesterday to lower the speed limit on city streets from 30 miles an hour to 25 miles an hour. they hope it will make the streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. the change goes into effect january 9th. massachusetts and rhode

preschool. massachusetts will get $15 million and rhode island will get $6 million to expand access to high-quality preschool for kids from low or moderate income families. the money comes from the department ofs of education and -- dments of education and health and human services. if you have trouble completing tasks on time, you may be able to blame your parents. a study shows those who had consistent routines growing up had less problems with attention and later in life. routines help children feel safe and have clearer expectations and boundaries. should the date we celebrate halloween change year to year? one state rep thinks so. josh cutler who represents pembroke file add bill to celebrate halloween on -- file add bill to celebrate hall -- filed a bill to celebrate on the saturday. kids won't be out trick or treating while most people are driving home from work or they have to get up early for school

brockton ends in a crash. the search for two people. and a teen heading to court this morning, charged with murdering his mother. plus a closer look at donald trump's first big deal as president-elect. his announcement today in indiana. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us, i'm kate merrill. >> i'm chris mckinnon. it is thursday, december 1st. but it doesn't feel like it out there. it's actually going to be pretty nice out to muggy, a little wet to start, but things will be changing. >> exactly. the sunshine will be breaking out, chris and kate. a little bit of fog to contend with this morning. visibility is reduceed in spots and showers and that patchy fog, 2 1/2-mile visibility in hyannis right now, keep that in mind. it's not as thick as it was yesterday. wind gusting 20 plus miles an hour from providence back down to the cape. the wind will be strong between now and dawn and then we'll see some gusts occasionally over 20 through the afternoon as well. still some pockets of rain out

through plymouth county, western plymouth county. these are going to slide north and east. some strong downpours just south of the vineyard right now. and we've got another batch from gardner right along the western portion of middlesex county over the border into new hampshire, right along route 89 too. this is going to cross over into new hampshire in the next 45 minutes or so. it is mild, we got warmer air coming in. look at taunton, 61. 51 now in boston and 40s north and west. we go 55 to 60 this afternoon as the sun breaks t. and it breaks -- the breaks of sunshine do emerge. we may get a lingering shower to 7:30, 8:00 on the outer cape and then it turns into a brighter afternoon with temperatures, again, 55 to 60 degrees. so sunrise is at 6:54. temperatures more like the end of october as opposed to december 1st. that west wind will be about 10 to 20 miles per hour today and for your evening rush still breezy and mild with temperatures right around 50 degrees. we'll take you through the upcoming weekend coming up. let's get you on the roads,

and despite the soggy start, we take a live look there at the expressway. things look pretty good. the only spots we're looking at right now is right here at the expressway where traffic volume is starting to build and you have some slowdowns going southbound and it's getting heavier at the split. but otherwise all the other roads heading in and out of the city free and clear. 5:32 right now. let's check our top stories. we start with breaking news overnight. a police chase end with a crash in brockton. a cruiser colliding with the suspect vehicle. police say the driver and a passenger in that car both got them right now. the officer suffered minor injuries and is expected to be okay. that chase began when officers were responding to a report of shots fired on ford street around 12:30 when they tried to pull over that vehicle it took off. an 18-year-old will be in court today in brockton, accused of stabbing his mother to death. france polinnese's grandmother was also in the home at the time but managed to escape to a neighbor's house. when police arrived, polinnese was sitting outside. he's real estate charged with

home. two parents are being held on bail after police say they were found passed out in their car with two young kids inside. officers say jacob davis and tamara bruce drove from vermont to buy drugs in lawrence. a passerby thought they were dead and called 911 friday night. police say first responders found a 23-month-old on the woman's lap and a 9-month-old in a baby seat. the couple is now facing reckless child endangerment charges. dcf has custody of off for a stotten family. 11-year-old elees from abregas has known for months she was getting a baby sister, so she paid extra attention in her cpr and heimlich maneuver classes that she took at school. then when 2-year-old miranda started choking on formula, elees knew exactly what to do. >> i she was, like, mom, calm down, this is what you have to do, turn her this way, you gotta pat her this way. >> i told my mom to turn her

extreme measures. in a facebook warning to those, quote, dumb enough to feel they can drink and drive, the kensington cops promise that if and when they catch you, quoting again, on top of a hefty fine, a criminal charge and a year's driving suspension, we will also provide you with a bonus gift of playing the office copy of nickelback in the cruiser on the way to jail, end quote. oh, the horror. but it turns out this is far from the first time the authorities have resorted to torture. u.s. troops reportedly used metallic a records and copies of the kiddy tv show "barney and friends" to break down prisoners of war. at other times the m&m album "the real slim shady" and the meow mix commercial theme song have also been used for this purpose. perhaps most famously when pan

we had just under an inch last year, just over a quarter inch of snow back in 2014. looking back to 2007, the only year that we had -- 2011, the only year we had above-average snowfall we had a foot and that fell back in 2013. we'll see what we end up with this month, but i can tell you this much, no snow this morning, at least in southern new england where we're tracking areas of rain. it is pouring right now in the vineyard. this downpour will continue, may clip the north side of nantucke of chatham. areas of light rain from plymouth to fairhaven, stretching up towards quincy. neponset. we're watching that continuing to shift off to the north and east. in boston, one little sprinkle here wocester to fitchburg and some areas of steadier rain shifting and crossing 93 in new hampshire right now. nashua back up to manchester and back up through concord too where it's 44 degrees, 51 in boston, low 60s right now from taunton back down to the cape.

falling in parts of northern maine. that's going to result in some outages, but good news for all the snowmobilers up there. our storm departs, by the way, over the next several hours. it pulls out of new england and the sun breaks out. so it does turn into a brighter afternoon. temperatures will be 55 to 60, the wind gets a little bit breezy. it's already gusting over 20. that will continue. and looking good, all outdoor fed festivities are a go, weekend, both saturday and sunday, featuring sun and clouds, but a bit of a gusty breeze and that will drag in some cooler air. so on saturday we'll be in the mid-40s which is actually normal for this time of the year and a little bit cooler, a chill to the air on sunday with highs right around or just over 40. what about today? sunshine breaking out, 55 to 60 degrees, mild, well above average for this time of the year. touch cooler in the wocester hill with some elevation there, nearing 60. we're already there in parts of the southeast part of the state

12:30 this morning. officers say when they arrived they tried to pull over a toyota camry. they say that car took off, officers chased the driver through brockton. police say the chase ended with a crash, the cruiser collided with a suspect vehicle is. when the driver stopped and parked it on pleasant street, both the driver and the passenger got out and ran. police say those two people are still on the run. the officer has minor injuries and is expected to live in brockton, annameiler, wbz this morning. also breaking overnight, a police officer shot while responding to a domestic violence call in washington state has died. police believe the suspect is holed up inside his tacoma home. the neighborhood is on lockdown. a woman and two children inside the house during the shooting are safe. the officer killed has not been identified. i'm nicole jacobs live in brockton where an 18-year-old is set to be arraigned for his

around 1:00 in the afternoon. they found 44-year-old minea mened inside the home. she'd been stabbed multiple times and was pronounced dead at the hospital. 18-year-old france polinnese, her son has been charged in his mother's murder. right now the district attorney is not commenting on a possible motive. the boy's grandmother we know was also inside the home. she was not injured but was able to run for help. we'll speak to helped her coming up. we're live in brockton, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. a drakeet man accused of stalking the whalen high school principal and trying to publicly humiliate her is now facing charges. police say 49-year-old kurt sanborn dated the woman for a few weeks, and after she broke up with him, they say he started stalking her and leaving flyers on cars all over whalen, insulting her and her job performance. at the time of his arrest, police say sanborn was on federal probation for bank

despite protests, a houston energy company plans to activate a gas pipeline through several boston neighborhoods today. the globe reports the company will start transmitting gas through the pipeline in west roxbury. the pipeline runs near a quarry where dynamite is regularly used. neighbors fear it's only a matter of time before an explosion happens. riding a bike in boston has gotten safer. a new harvard study says there was a 14% drop in injuries from 2009 to 2012. the study credits by the city like expanding bike lanes and better signs, and it says the more bikes that are on the road, the more aware drivers have become. in today's health watch, new concerns about a potential link between alcohol and skin cancer. a new study at brown university found drinking white wine increases the risker of melanoma. research has found each glass increases the risk by about 13%. beer, red wine and liquor did not significantly affect skin cancer risks. and new evidence that
