good morning, everyone. i'm breana pitts >> i'm nick giovanni. it's friday, december 2nd. kate and chris have the day off. we're following breaking news right now at 6:00. new information on the connection between a campus cruiser crash and shots fired near an mbta station. plus three suspects on the run following a frightening home invasion. an elderly man tied up and tased. what those thieves were after. plus rob gronkowski sidelined for the season. we're hearing from the pats and tom brady as gronk gets set for surgery today. and boston school considering a change to when that first bell rings. >> yeah, that's right. but, first, we'll get a check of the forecast with danielle niles. feels like spring out there,

breana and nick. still above average, topping out around 50 this afternoon. it's 40 in boston right now. could be a whole lot colder this time of year. the real feel is 31 degrees right now. that westerly breeze is active, 16 miles per hour and the wind will stay strong today. real feel of 24 in wocester, in fact, 31 manchester to lawrence and mid-30s on the cape. most of us are in the 30s in the suburbs, in fact. again, 40 in downtown boston and chatham, but the skies are clear. so a quiet start to the morning. sunrise coming up just under an hour from now, and it will feature plenty berkshires and back through vermont. so grab the shades as you head out the door. sunrise at 6:55. out of the 30s we climb to 47 by lunchtime, fair and breezy. the wind gusts occasionally over 20 miles per hour. no weather-related issues today, though. ride home featuring a few clouds, sunset at 4:12 and temperatures in the mid-40s, feeling more like december again this weekend. we'll break down all your weekend details straight ahead. breana >> danielle, thank you. we have a live look right

and you are bumper to bumper already from braintree all the way up to the pike and the o'neill tunnel. you're approaching 30 minutes right now to get from braintree into boston. an update on breaking news in milton. state police say two people were kill whd a car hit a tree on brush hill road and burst into flames. a third person in that vehicle survived and was taken to boston medical center. the cause of this crash is still under investigation. and breaking overnight, one person rushed to the hospital over a shng this happened near devon and normandy streets not far from a playground and a middle school. no word on the victim's condition. also breaking overnight, a car slams into a campus police cruiser in boston, and we're getting new information from police at this hour. nicole jacobs is live in roxbury with the details. nicole. >>reporter: nick, there are three incidents police are investigating this morning, and they just confirmed at least two of them are connected. they all happened in close proximity and in a very short

video this morning. boston police are confirming that a vehicle was speeding away from the ruggles street area right near the "t" station where shots were reported to have been fired. that vehicle crashed into a wentworth campus police cruiser. we know one person was taken into custody, three others reportedly ran away from that scene. then a short distance away on mcgrievey street, more shots were reported to have been fired where two vehicles were you can see the windows completely shattered there. again, campus police are -- or i should say that campus police officer who was inside the cruiser was taken to the hospital for evaluation. and all of this, of course, remains under investigation. it has yet to be determined if that mcgrievey street incident is connected to the other two. we'll let you know as soon as we get more information. that's the very latest from roxbury, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning

the patriot's rob gronkowski set to undergo surgery and the team announces they expect to miss gronk for the rest of the season. what does this mean in the short term for the steve? wbz's steve burton has the latest re. >>reporter: the pat's orches is at its best when the patriots play at full power. gronk is facing a third back surgery since 2009. on westward 1 radio tom brady talked about the loss of his top target. >> you know, i've see last few days so i've spoken to him a few times. everyone is thinking about him and what he's gone through. it's such a physical sport. it's hard to see people that you care about go through injuries, and he's gone through his fair share, but i also know the resolve that he had, and that will never change with him. he'll be as determined as ever to get back and get better as soon as possible. >>reporter: dr. thomas gill, the former patriot's team doctor says that gronk's -- if gronk's injury is to a disk

the past, it would make recovery even more difficult. >> what happens is every time you take out a piece of a difng, the vertebrae gets close -- disk, the vertebrae gets closer and closer together. the closer the vertebrae gets together, two things happen, one, it lets the nerves get pinched more, so you end up having leg pain, but also as the vertebrae get closer, they start rubbing and that causes a lot of back pain. >>reporter: meanwhile the pats quarterback knows losing gronk won't make things easy, but it's next man up. >> we have a lot of good players on our team that are going to need to and it's a big void left by such a spectacular player like gronk. >>reporter: brady said even without gronk the patriots will not give up on what they're trying to accomplish and that's take home another, a fifth super bowl championship. from foxborough, steve burton, wbz sport spos. guys, back to you. >> steve, back to you. -- steve, thank you. the patriots and gronkowski families released a statement overnight, saying in part we do not expect he will be able to play football for the remainder of the 2016 season.

pulmonary contusion to his lung. last week he was forced to leave the field in a game against the new york jets. now he's scheduled to have surgery for a lower back injury. >> that's too bad. the poor guy, he kills himself playing, but he gets hurt all the time. >>reporter: they have faith tight end bennett will be able to step up. >> i think they'll be all right. they're always going to have a shot, no matter what. >>reporter: fans know no challenge is too big for bill ritter check. >> i'm sure bill is going to figure it out. >>reporter: gronk's family and the patriots say for the results of the surgery before making a final determination on the rest of the season. some fans say they're hoping to see him back in time for the super bowl, but that doesn't seem likely. reporting live from gillette stadium, anna meiler, wbz this morning. >> anna, thank you. police searching for three suspects in a terrifying home invasion. three masked men tying up an elderly man in his brockton home and demanding gold. police say 71-year-old michael acvati was tied up with his own suspenders and tased several

over the gold. friends say they don't believe he had gold, but they do describe him as the coin collector and an antique enthusiast. >> they took his wallet, his license, his army picture, you know, all that type of stuff. whatever he had in his wallet, his keys to his property, his keys to his house. the guy is pettreyifyed to go home now. >> acvati was eventually able to free himself and call police. he is in the hospital undergoing surgery on his hip. >>es for the supreme court. mr. trump saying he is looking at three or four candidates at this point for the open seat. the president-elect also announced he'll nominate retired marine general james mattis for defense secretary. cbs' roxanna seberi has more from trump's post-election victory rally. brblght cheers and applause ] >>reporter: president-elect donald trump kicked off his thank you tour in ohio last night, emphasizing his victory over hillary clinton.

[ cheers and applause ] >> as our secretary of defense. >>reporter: in the past mattis has said that responding to political islam is a major country. he's expected to face a tough challenge in getting senate confirmation since he retired only three years ago, not seven as the law requires. roxanna seberi, cbs news. >> senator elizabeth warren is throwing her support behind a formal rival under consideration for a position in president-elect donald trump's cabinet. on public radio yesterday warren endorsed former senator scott brown for veterans affairs secretary, saying she has no doubt brown would put

warren beat brown in a contentious senate race back in 2012. brown tweeted in response my thanks to senator warren for her kind words. if nominated for v.a. secretary, i will welcome her support, passion and help to serve our vets, hashtag truce. the first bell might be ringing in boston public schools. it's new times in the near future. it's being considered at this point. according to the globe, the move could save money but frustrate some parents at the same time. as across boston have three different start times, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30. if the district evenly divided schools among those start times, they might consolidate the number of buses needed and cut costs. one problem, though, parents start registering for schools in january. since no decision has been made yet, they might not know which school would actually work best with their schedules. and still to come on wbz this morning, coming to boston -- or change coming to boston's parking meters.

we have a happy update this morning. two dorchester pop warner teams have raised enough money to go to the national championships at disney world and they are leaving today. the eagles have raised more than $20,000 in less than two weeks, thanks to donations from

places. we told you about the teams earlier this week both qualifying for the pop warner super bowl in orlando tomorrow, but it's not cheap to get there. so the teams will board buses bound for florida at noon today. and we wish them good luck. we did this story on giving tuesday, and obviously a lot of people gave and they get to go now, so that's great >> now they're -- now they're on the road to the championship. clear skies for them to get down there, right? good luck to them. our weather didn't feel like florida, but it was warm yesterday. we were up near 60 in spots. today won't be quite as warm, but it will be a nice start. look at that, clear skies, smooth sailing over boston right now, and plenty of sunshine is in the forecast. sunrise coming up at 6:55 this morning. starting to see a little bit of that color just show right over the horizon right now. temperatures, again, not as mild today, but the wind is going to be breezy the next couple of days. chilly air moves in this

back to a return to below normal temperatures. we should be in the mid-40s this time of the year. very little precipitation in the forecast as well. we look mainly dry for the next several days, could see some rain and snow showers by the middle part of next week. 40 in boston right now. you know it could be colder this time of the year. we have dipped into the upper 20s in concord now, 37 in jaffray, 32 in nashua, mid-30s in wocester, 39 in marshfield, same in falmouth and 40s for many of us t shades as you head out the door this morning. a few clouds in the berkshires and western new england. you can see the counter clockwise spin, rain and snow showers up at lake ontario and lake erie, a couple in northern new england as well. we will be dry today. i can't rule out a stray flurry tonight in wocester county, in the berkshires, but it would be just that, a flurry. no big weather issues. our saturday looks bright, looks beautiful. it will be breezy again today and tomorrow.

wind gusts occasionally 20 to 30 miles an hour. the wind does subside somewhat, though, as we head into sunday. so it eases up just a little bit. high pressure in control, mostly sunny skies for our sunday as well, and then the clouds increase. you see a couple spotty rain and snow showers back across the great lakes. a few of those may arrive sunday night into the first half of monday with a stray flurry or rain shower, but nothing significant. 50 for a high in boston today, 52 in norwood. another above-average afternoon, right around 50 on cape cod as well. tonight partly cloudy, 30 to 35 in the suburbs, 36 downtown. the wind is still active, so the wind chill will be in the 20s at times tomorrow morning. and then highs do rise into the mid-40s. that's normal for this time of the year. it'll feel a little bit colder with that wind, low 40s on sunday, so it does turn a little bit chilly for the second half of the weekend, that includes for the pats kickoff sunday at 1:00 at gillette. bright, chilly, 41 degrees. the wind will 5-15 miles an hour, not going to be a big

upper 30s. temperatures will be in the upper 30s for the start of next week. clouds increase again on tuesday, chance of some rain and snow showers tuesday night into wednesday, breana >> all right, danielle, thank you. we have a live look at 93 south. a couple of accidents we want to tell you about. first one is in andover on 93 south. this is at exit 44 right at 495. traffic is backing up to methune. we also have an accident in chelsea on the tobin bridge. also heading southbound it's on the on ramp from traffic building there. making headlines at 6:18, surge pricing no longer just applies to ride sharing but parking in boston. the pilot program starts next month and is going to allow the city to adjust meter rates in the back bay and seaport neighborhoods based on demand. for one year all meters in the back bay will increase to $3.75 per hour at all times. in seaport, meanwhile, prices will go up gradually, and by the end of the year could be as much as $4 an hour on streets with high demand.

he crashed his car while speeding and streaming it live on facebook. officers say the rhode island man was driving 100 miles an hour and weaving in and out of traffic when he lost control on wednesday. he crashed into a garbage truck, then crossed three lanes of route 6 and hit a concrete barrier. he could face charges. new rules for duck boats in boston. a bill passed by state lawmakers yesterday requires duck boats to have blind spot cameras an doubling as tour guides, a little too much multitasking lawmakers found. the regulations follow a series of accidents including a woman killed by a duck boat riding a scooter near boston common back in april. the legislation is now on governor baker's desk for review. a massachusetts woman who spent more than six hours traped in a ski gondola was just awarded $750,000. the pittsfield woman sued killington mountain in vermont. she claims she suffered from

ptsd after being trapped in the gondola in 2011. the resort shut the lift down early because of bad weather and no one realized that woman was still inside. a massachusetts woman is saying thank you to a stranger who helped her on the side of the road. rebecca lynch posted this picture on twitter you see here. she says a mass d.o.t. employee named david simply changed her tire on the side of interstate 290 during yesterday morning's rush hour. she had david to thank. >> like we said, david to the rescue. i call him all the time. down an entire elementary school today. also coming up a state soda tax. a local lawmaker pushing for higher soda prices. and if you like pop tarts and dunkin' donuts, you are going to love this. we'll tell you about the new

a virus closing a rhode island elementary school today. nearly 40% of students at the gladstone street school in cranston were out yesterday with suspected cases of norovirus. the illness is highly contagious and the school says it's working to thoroughly clean the building. well, the bay state could be the next state to slap a tax on soda. democrat state representative kay kahn from newton plans to file a soda tax proposal in the new year. her plan wouldn't create a tax, it would just apply the regular state sales tax to soda which is currently exempt. meanwhile, if you're a fan of wend yir's frosties this story is for you. starting next year you can get unlimited frosties for just $2. you buy a $2 key tag and you show it to get a free junior frosty during every visit. most of the key tag money goes to the dave thomas foundation. it helps children in foster care. so you figure pretty low-rifng investment. >> yeah, and if pop tarts and

what the team and tom brady are saying about life without him. thanks so much for waking up with us on this friday, i'm nick giovanni. >> i'm breana pitts. kate and chris have the day off. nick and i are holding down the fort on this friday. danielle also holding down the fort because she's bringing us, like, these spring temperatures in december. >> it was so above average yesterday. wee nick and breana. temperatures today won't be quite as warm, but still above average. out the door right now we do have a wind chill and that's because the wind is between about five and 15 miles an hour adding a little bit of a bite to the air. we know it could be worse this time of the year. the real feel 21 in wocester, low 30s in boston as well. temperature is 40 in the city itself, 40 in chatham and most of us in the 30s. clear skies and smooth sailing this morning, though don't forget the shades. sunrise is coming up about 25 minutes from now and it will be

part of the state, otherwise the real feel, 25 to 30 for some of us, the wind out of the west today will stay active and gust occasionally over 20 miles per hour. midday 47 with sunshine and a couple clouds. the wind chill would be right around 40 degrees. and then evening rush hour is looking quiet with just a few clouds, sunset at 4:12 and temperatures in the mid-40s. first weekend of december, have to say it's looking pretty good. i'll have all the details coming up in a few, breana >> danielle, thank you. want to tell you ou the roads this morning. a live look at 93 south where there is an accident in andover. this is heading southbound before exit 43 and route 133. you have stop-and-go traffic back to exit 45, river road. there's also a disabled vehicle on the tobin bridge heading southbound in chelsea, and that vehicle is disabled near the on ramp from everett avenue. now to some breaking news from overnight. police investigating a shooting in dorchester not far from a playground and a middle school.

one person was taken to boston medical center. no word on their condition. also breaking overnight, a car slams into a campus police cruise irin boston, and we're -- cruiser in boston and we're getting new information from police. >> nicole jacobs live in roxbury for us. what have we learned so far, nicole? >>reporter: nick, of the three incidents that happened overnight that police are now investigating, we now know two of them are connected, and they all happened in a very close proximity of one another and a ry video this morning. boston police now confirm that a vehicle was speeding away from the area of the ruggles "t" station when that same vehicle crashed into a wentworth campus police cruiser. we know one person was taken into custody, three others reportedly ran away from the scene after that crash. then a short distance away on mcgrievey street more shots were fired where two vehicles were hit by bullets.

we know the campus police officer who was inside the cruiser at the time of that crash was taken to the hospital for evaluation, but police are still trying to determine if the mcgrievey street shots fired is in any way related to the cruiser crash and the shots fired just a short distance away on ruggls street. all of that is still under investigation this morning. we'll continue to keep you updated. that's the very latest from roxbury, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. an autopsy today may along the meramec river in lawrence. a woman walking her dog found the decapitated body off waters street near the boys and girls club. investigators eventually recovered the head nearby. foul play is suspected, but the person has yet to be identified. friends and family of 16-year- old lee manuel paulino gathered across from the crime scene, fearing the body is his. the teen was reported missing in mid-november. paulino's father says he's devastated but he's holding out

my mind. i'm so scared. i'm nervous. i can't eat, i can't -- oh, i can't even focus right now. >> i'm hoping for the best. i hope it's not him. >> the teen's family is keeping in close communication with investigators. the d.a.'s office says until the medical examiner makes an i.d., they will not speculate on who it might be. it's 6:34. we've learned the mother accused of helping dispose of her toddler's body will stand trial in february. rachelle bond is charged as an accessory death of her 2-year-old daughter bella. bella bond's body was found on deer island in june of 2015. it took several months, as you'll recall, to identify her. police believe rachelle bond's boyfriend, michael mccarthy killed the child. a terrifying robbery caught on camera. right now lowell police are searching for two armed men that held up this liquor store. police say one of the men was wearing a "scream" mask and they were armed with a handgun and a sawed off shotgun. surveillance video shows them

one of the store employees. luckily no one was hurt. the thieves took off with the money and ran but police are worried they could strike again. >> obviously they're desperate, and they're both armed with firearms and one of them appears to be a sawed off shotgun and that causes great concern because those things do a lot of damage when they go off. >> police say the "scream" mask doesn't necessarily mask their identity and could even help the investigation if it's recognized. patriots tight end rob gronkowski set surgery today. the team now confirms they expect gronk to miss the rest of the season. patriots saying they are looking out for gronk's best long-term interests. what does this mean in the short term for the patriots? anna meiler is live at gillette with the latest. anna. >>reporter: nick, tom brady says losing gronk for the rest of the season will be challenging for the team, but one that they will work hard to overcome. gronk has been dealing with injury after injury this season. he was hit hard in the game

for the new england patriots. the pats fans, as you just heard, though, they know that gronk's loss is a big blow to the team. >> hopefully martel can step up and take on some of that role. but anytime you lose a player like gronk, best tight end in football, it's definitely go to have an impact on the team. >> we got plenty of weapons, brady throw-through, although gronk was a great blocker as well as a great receiver. it's going to be tough, but we got enough weapons i think we can make it through. >> we shall see. a quick look at the numbers entered the league. in those games, the team just 15-7. today you can help families displaced by a bad fire in lawrence this week. a radio-a-thon will be held today for the victims. lawrence mayor dan riveira will be among those at the mcdonald's on broadway in lawrence for the fundraiser. the money raised will go to families devastated by tuesday's fire on havril street. there were no major injuries, but that building is a total loss. in fire-ravaged tennessee,

in fact, the mountains of northern new england will pick up a fresh several inches, particularly in the highest summits by the time the weekend is done or by the time we get to sunday morning. for us, though, sunshine mixed with clouds today. the wind a little bit active both today and tomorrow. it adds a little bit of a chill to the air, and that grabs the cooler air out of canada. high pressure builds right on in, the winds subside a little bit on sunday. that does make a difference, but colder air will kind of balance it all out. and then sunday night into monday, going to pick up a couple sprinkles showers back to our west, some clouds will move in and we may see a sprinkle or flurry sunday night into the first part of monday. but nothing significant there. 50 for a high in boston today, about five degrees above the average for this time of the year. 49 in fitchburg. the west wind 10 to 20 miles an hour may gust occasionally 20 to 30 miles per hour today, right around 50 from the south shore back down to the south coast and cape cod. tonight widespread 30s. the wind will still stay strong, so we may get a wind

in chelsea. this is near the on ramp from everett avenue. you can see plenty of congestion there. we have an update on breaking news in milton. state police say two people were killed when a car hit a tree on brush hill road and then burst into flames. a third person in that vehicle survived and was taken to boston medical center. the cause of the crash is under investigation. also breaking overnight, shots fired near the ruggles "t" station. the car fleeing the scene crashes into a campus police cruiser. one person is now in cu three others that ran from the scene. the wentworth officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation. also in roxbury overnight, police investigating after several damaged vehicles were found on mcgreevey way. some appeared to actually have their windows shot out. police are trying to figure out if those scenes are connected. and breaking overnight, one person taken to the hospital after a shooting in dorchester. this happened near devon and normandy streets not far from a

condition. and time now is 6:47. our other top stories this morning. >> police searching for three home invasion suspects accused of tying up an elderly man and demanding gold. >> police say the masked intruders tied up 71-year-old michael acvatti with his own suspenders and tased him several times. the victim's friend says the men stole his wallet, license and his keys. acvatti managed to free himself and called police once the men left. he's in the hospital right now undergoing surgery. pr trump says he'll nominate retired marine corps general james mattis to lead the defense department. he made the announcement yesterday at a post-election victory rally in ohio. mattis also known by his nickname "mad dog" retired in 2013 after serving as commander of the u.s. central command. still to come, the latest on gronk's surgery set for today. plus tom brady back on the field dealing with an injury of his own. and the bruins go to a shootout for the second game in a row.
