afghanistan. >> absolutely. i'm sure this is going to be the subject of an investigation, but aren't these aircraft based weapons systems supposed to be so precise, one wonders how this could have happened. >> these are precision weapons, these are precision aircraft, but there are humans involved in that process. coordinates have to be fed to the airport. coordinates have to be written down. those coordinates have to be entered into those bombs before they're unleashed. now, all of this will be determined in an investigation and right now it's just too early to tell. >> terrible story this morning. jim miklaszewski at the pentagon for us. in other news, the scandal involving donald sterling is heating up again this morning. nbc news has received a new statement from sterling signaling a reversal of his decision to support the sale of his team. donald sterling is fighting back this morning against the nba, releasing a statement to nbc news that states clearly across the top, the team is not for
7:04 am
sale. in the one-page document, sterling says, from the onset, i did not want to sell the clippers. sterling then goes after adam silver, saying silver acted in haste by illegally ordering the forced sale of the clippers, banning me for life from the nba and imposing the fine. adding that the action constitutes a violation of my rights and flies in the face of freedoms that are afforded to all americans. driving his message home, he says, i intend to fight to keep the team. in may, sterling's estranged wife shelly accepted a bid from former microsoft ceo steve ballmer to buy the clippers for $2 billion. last week, sterling seemed ready to accept the deal in an exclusive interview with knbc. >> so you're done, you're okay? >> well, i'm okay. is the nba okay? i'm not sure about him. is adam silver okay? i'm sure he's okay. >> but now you move on. move on with you life.
7:05 am
>> move on. >> but sterling still hasn't consented to the sale and this latest move suggests this fight is far from over. bobby semini is sterling's attorney, he's here with us exclusively. >> good morning, matt. >> did he have a change or heart or did he not understand the deal? >> well, matt, that's a very good question, and i want to come back to that because it ties into some other issues that i think are important. the nba's focus is the sale of the team. that's all they're talking about, the sale of the team. i think what's important to see here is the bigger issue. the nba's got a systemic problem with discriminatory conduct. since 2008, there have been four cases against the nba for gender discrimination. there were two other very well-known cases, one with isiah thomas that resulted in $11 million award, and another where the eoc came in and actually
7:06 am
found that the phoenix suns had violated some rules. >> but let me keep you to the question of the morning, though, why the change of heart? did he not understand the deal? is this about the fine? is this about the lifetime ban? what is it? >> well, matt, i think it's more than that. i think there was a time to have a discussion, there was a time to try and have a resolution of this matter. but, again, adam silver has made it clear that he's going to go forward. they want to get this team sold. that's all they care about. >> but did mr. sterling not understand that the fine would stand and the lifetime ban would stand when he agreed, it seemed, to this deal last week? >> that was not the understanding. i'm not going to go into the particulars of the discussions, but that clearly wasn't the understanding. of course, adam silver has come out now and made it clear that he's not going to back off. but again, matt, i think the bigger issue here is that my client is out to clear his name
7:07 am
and he's going to basically expose the nba for what it is. it's a band of hypocrites. >> i want to ask you about that in a second. he underwent a neurological examination on may 16th. just a few days after he gave that interview to cnn. i believe at his wife's urging. it's my understanding, according to published reports, that two doctors who conducted that investigation or examination determined that he had some cognitive impairment. in your opinion, is donald sterling mentally stable? >> matt, i know you've spoken to him. i've spent a fair amount of time with donald sterling. there is no issue as to his mental capacity. of course, there are some very good legal tactics why that issue has come up, and frankly, i don't think that's going to get much traction. we know that that's going to be an issue that's going to come to bear and we're prepared to deal with it when it does. >> if this goes forward, this fight goes forward, then the nba owners, the other owners can get together and vote him out. it would take three quarters of
7:08 am
those owners. do you see a time coming very soon where lawyers for donald sterling sit those other owners down in individual depositions and ask them questions, like have you ever used language that would be racially insensitive, have you ever used racial slurs, have you ever used language that's offensive to women or gays, et cetera? >> well, i don't think we have to go that far and it's a tactic that may come to bear down the road. we don't have to go that far. we can look at the nba's own record. there are four cases, one of which they settled just last year that involved discriminatory conduct that was gender-based. this is a common practice for the nba, and i'm not talking about the teams. i'm talking about the nba itself. >> so you think mr. sterling is being singled out here? >> i think he is being singled out. the issue is not whether his conduct was appropriate. he's apologized. in the statement that was released yesterday, it was pretty unequivocal.
7:09 am
he has apologized for the conduct, he understands that what he said was very hurtful, and now it's time to move on that to the bigger picture. if you're going to come after sterling, maybe it's time for the nba to take a close reflection on their own conduct. i think that's the bigger picture. they seem to think that gender discrimination is okay. >> bobby semini, thank you so much for your time this morning. >> thank you very much. now to some revelations about the couple behind that deadly shooting rampage in las vegas. investigators now say they believe the husband and wife acted alone, but had thought about carrying out an attack like this for months. nbc's mike taibbi has the latest. >> reporter: they're mourning in las vegas at a vigil outside the pizza restaurant where police say jerad and amanda miller began their rampage, and in the police department, saluting two of their fallen brothers, 41-year-old alyn beck and

well, if that's the language they want to speak, we'll learn it. >> reporter: neighbors of the millers say in the past two months, the couple who had once been fond of performance arts had grown grim and threatening, talking about killing cops with ominous posts on social media. then sunday morning, when neighbor kelly fielder says she spoke with the couple when they left their apartment for the last time. >> she hugged me, he hugged me, and he said he had to do what he had to do and the revolution has just begun. >> reporter: the rampker cliven bundy said he doesn't remember meeting either of the millers but what they did in las vegas had nothing to do with his continuing dispute with the federal government. >> thank you very much. natalie is on assignment today. willie is here and he's got breaking news on another terror attack. >> gunmen have staged an attack near the airport in karachi, pakistan, which also was the seen of a siege on sunday that killed 36 people. richard engel has more on that and on the latest on the controversy surrounding sergeant

bowe bergdahl. richard once again in landstuhl, germany. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. sergeant bergdahl remains here at the landstuhl medical center. he's still receiving treatment. no word exactly when he'll go back to the states. as you know, there has been a lot of criticism levelled at the obama administration for releasing five taliban militants in exchange for bergdahl. well, this morning, the taliban claimed responsibility for an attack at the training wing of the karachi airport. pakistani officials say it was a hit-and-run attack that they quickly regained control of the area, that the airport was never threatened. the airport, nonetheless, the biggest in karachi, remains cancelled. this comes just two days after a sustained attack on the karachi airport that killed more than 30 people. the taliban also responsible for that attack. and it all shows how strong the taliban remains, not just in afghanistan with that terrible friendly fire attack took place today, but in pakistan as well.

7:41. you've seen them in the movies and classic shows like "night rider," but did you ever imagine that you could have your own driverless car? not only one that's going to be available in the future, but one that is a reality now. nbc's craig megavin is at mercedes-benz's headquarters in new jersey. craig, good morning, what do you have? >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the future is here. recently you probably saw google putting folks in their driverless cars. i also recently had the chance to spend some time with another auto maker, and they said -- they insisted they are 80% of

>> cheers. >> another round. >> cheers, guys. >> thanks, guys. >> all in all, a pretty good day. >> we did much better with the conversation than we did with the fishing. a beautiful place, but we didn't catch a thing. >> the only fish we caught was the one on your phone from montana. >> but it was fun. it's interesting how i think although we grew up in different circumstances, many of the experiences we had with our dads and now pass on to our kids are very much the same. >> i think what's so interesting is, you said there weren't necessarily sit-down talks with your dads. you just watched what they did and you do it, too. i mean, leading by example is so important. >> leading by osmosis. >> tomorrow, willie, i know you're going to have an adventure. >> with someone you may know, your husband, mike feldman. i take savannah's husband mike for a special outing to get ready for the whole labor delivery, fatherhood thing. yes, that was a baby bjorn. >> by the way, willie, are you playing the role of me?
8:25 am
>> i am savannah guthrie for a day. >> this is disturbing. >> it was frightening. so that's coming up tomorrow. >> all right. looking forward to that. just ahead, rob lowe opens up to maria shriver about his role as a father and how it's impacted his career choices. >> and then, wait no longer. the cast of the netflix phenomenon "orange is the new black," they are here, they are ready to role. they are in the orange room. we'll be back after your local news.

8:30 am
we're back now, 8:30 on a tuesday morning, the 10th day of june, 2014. mr. roker making his way to join the party. nice to have you here. cloudy skies in midtown, manhattan. nice crowd joining us here. we've got a lot of dads here. >> hey, fellows. >> modern dads getting ready for father's day at the end of the week. nice to have you guys here along with some of your children. that's always nice. >> i don't know if you can hear, but we're listening to one of
8:31 am
the popular new acts in musicaled five seconds of summer. remember that name. the guys have a very special announcement to make. take a look. >> hi, we're five seconds to summer. we'll be coming to the plaza to celebrate our album release. >> on july 22nd to the "today" show. >> see you there. >> i can hear the squeals now. >> i can hear my phone ringing now with all my friends with kids. >> exactly. mark your calendars tuesday, july 22nd, when five seconds of summer takes over rockefeller plaza. simply e-mail matt lauer for tickets. meanwhile, we've got a very popular group also coming up. "orange is the new black," a binge-worthy hit that keeps people glued to their tvs and laptops. the cast is here today to talk about season two and what's made this series so successful. >> they're deep in thought. >> nice pose. >> yes, it is. and rob lowe sits down with maria shriver to reflect on his most important role, father. and what he wants his sons to do that he never got to experience.
8:32 am
>> but first, mr. roker, check of the weather. >> let's show you what we've got happening for today. we are looking at a risk of strong storms, especially down through the lower mississippi river valley. wet weather in the northern plains. gorgeous weather in the pacific northwest. 68 and sunny in beautiful seattle. we're looking at showers in the southeast. tomorrow, more rain moving in. sizzling from texas into the southwest. nice and sunny and mild as you get into the pacific i'm meteorologist bill henley. a stormy start and a foggy one, too. there is a chance we'll see more showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. afternoon temperatures topping out in the 80s. more of the same on tap for tomorrow. . 81 with occasional storms on wednesday. storms more likely thursday and friday. middle 80s with a high humidity both days, but then a turn for the more comfortable this
8:33 am
weekend. sunshine, saturday and sunday. low humidity in the low 80s. have a great day. >> that's your latest weather. we have so many dads here, anything you want to tell your daddy? >> no. >> no! okay. we've got a happy father's day. all these guys having a good time. we love it. a little fistpump, buddy? all right. now let's head back inside. guys? hello! >> all right, al. thank you very much. now to more of our ongoing "modern dads" series, rob lowe is a guy who's famous for his television and movie roles, but it is his role as a father that he treasures more than anything. lowe writes very candidly about all that in a new book called "love life," and he recently sat down with nbc special anchor maria shriver. >> my children have always made me feel, they have always taught me, changed me, always for the better. having them in my life has turned me into a man. >> when rob lowe talks about his
8:34 am
children, his priorities become very clear. >> i just got early on that my boys were going to be my life's work. i made a conscious effort to focus on television so i could stay in los angeles. and so i wasn't on a location, you know, all over the world doing movies. >> so you said to yourself, i better go into tv and not do films all the time? >> exactly. it was going to be easier to have as close to a normal life as i could have. >> normal life with his sons matthew, now 20, and 18-year-old john owen, meant being there for bedtime, birthdays, and all the little moments in between. >> i loved coaching the teams. i loved going on the field trips. i'm the guy dressing up in the caveman outfit for the kids' birthday parties. >> he wanted to be there in part because his own dad wasn't. his parents divorced, leaving lowe to be raised mostly by his mom. >> because of the divorce, he was out of my life on a daily basis, so it was weekends and fun and movies and all those
8:35 am
things that weekend dads do. >> has your father commented on your fathering? >> he does. he's sort of blown away. he says, i just hope you're having some time for you, he always says. i say, this is time for me. are you kidding me? that's what this is. for me, the battle is finding the balance between wanting to spend time with my boys, because they're my favorite people, and then having enough sort of perspective to still be like the disciplinarian and not be in the best friend business. >> you're in the in this best friend business? >> i try not to be. and i don't always win that battle because i enjoy them so much. but you don't need your dad to be your best friend. >> he's managed to make sure both of his sons go to college, something lowe himself never did. and he hopes the time he spent with them will pave the way for their own visions of fatherhood. >> many men say to me, look, my role is to be a provider and a protector. but can you change that? can modern fathers change the way fatherhood is perceived
8:36 am
among other men, to make it as important as the role of provider? >> i think it is changing. if you go to a pickup at a school anywhere, you'll see more fathers there than i think you would have ten years ago. i feel like the idealized man today is still out there in the world, providing and able to balance that with raising, as opposed to taking over what has been traditionally the role of mom. >> about to be empty nestors, lowe and his wife sheryl have few regrets about how they've raised their family, and in the end, that may be the best father's day present of all. >> i put in the time, i did it. i can't imagine what it would be like to have guilt around that. and then have your kids have problems in adulthood. that would be devastating to me. everybody's going to go through
8:37 am
challenges, but at least sheryl and i know that we did truly the best we could. >> you know, he's in good company, because in today's modern dads survey, we found that more than a third of empty nesters felt closer to their own parents were with them. so apparently you're learning by some of the things that didn't go well with your parents and you're doing a better job with your own kids. >> fatherhood has changed over the generations so much. >> expectations have certainly changed. no question about it. >> i think it's the evolution of fatherhood, too. you take the good things you watched your father do and leave some of the bad things behind and hopefully you get better with each generation. >> and i think dads and moms are coming closer to who they are and the roles are interchangeable. >> by the way, you can see more of maria's conversation with rob lowe, you can also read and excerpt from his book on today.com. coming up next, get excited. the phenomenon is back. we're going to catch up with the cast of "orange is the new black." yes, there they are.
8:38 am
but first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:39 am
8:40 am
we're back at 8:40. if you did not answer your phone this weekend or didn't see your family, it may have something to do with our next guests. the stars of the popular netflix original series "orange is the new black." take a look. >> this is not how i imagined prison to be at all. >> after an 11-month wait, the women are finally back behind bars for season two of the much-anticipated netflix dark comedy "orange is the new black." >> oh, my god, i'm so relieved. >> the show follows good girl gone bad piper chatman, locked up for smuggling drug men, and
8:41 am
locked up with pennsatucky. >> while the humor is always a part of the show, this season will take a darker turn. >> don't make me rip your throat out with my teeth. >> the last year, we've really seen netflix transition into being a network. they've launched original series "orange is the new black" and "house of cards" that have been incredibly well-received. >> welcome to washington. >> and while netflix does not release ratings, if the buzz on social media is any indication of the show's success, "orange is the new black" has captivated binge watchers all over again. >> mendez is back. >> joining us now four of the stars of "orange is the new black," taylor shilling, laura prepon, jason biggs, and uzo aduba. good morning to all of you. >> good morning. >> here's an unscientific measure of success. we're so excited to have you.
8:42 am
unscientific measure of success. we had a beautiful weekend here in new york and much of the country, and people spent the weekend indoors binge-watching. so i'm reading tweets. i should have paced myself, says one person. yes, i binge watched instead of studying my exams, and yes, i regret it. does it make you feel good -- >> i don't want people to fail, or not live up to their potential scholastically because of our show. >> i do. i really don't care about people's education as long as they are watching our show, or any show on netflix, obviously. but mostly our show. >> way to take a stand, jason. show of hands, and please be honest, when your agent or whoever came to you and said hey, we've got this new series, it's only online and it's set in a women's prison, who thought, this is going to be a huge hit? >> well, when you hear -- you know, after you read the pilot,
8:43 am
it was so good. i think i speak for all of us when you say you knew it was something special and it made you want to take that leap. >> this group was so good, it sort of crossed mediums, no matter what was going on, it was worth doing. >> i loved hearing about how you came on the show. you actually auditioned for another part, as i understand it. what did you think when the producers said we have something in mind for you, it's a character called crazy eyes. >> i started thinking to myself, i was like, what in my audition would have ever made them think, she's not quite right for the track star, but she is totally right for the crazy person. i was like, okay, well, we'll take it. but i read it, i thought -- yes, she felt absolutely right. that felt like the right fit. >> weren't you only supposed to be in a couple episodes and they saw your genius, they brought you back? >> yes, i was only supposed to do two episodes, maybe a third, and i remember walking back with one of our producers, lisa, and she said we're going to use you more. i was like, amazing, i'm going to get to do that third episode.
8:44 am
>> jason, you're one of the few men. in contrast to most of the women characters who have cheated, lied, stolen, murdered, you're the good guy. but yet, somehow you're not that sympathetic. why is that? >> yeah, well, i think -- i have a couple theories. one of which is that the women are so incredibly sympathetic, and these ladies are so incredible and taylor does such an amazing job, and people really root for piper, so when larry does these things, makes these decisions that are, you kno know, somewhat questionable, even though i see it as him trying to take care of himself given the circumstances. but people are not thrilled with him. so he's kind of a polarizing guy. >> and by the way, taylor, your life has to have completely changed. this is a huge first role. i mean, do you walk down the street and people recognize you now? what's it been like? >> yeah. well, people do. and it's really exciting. because new york is sort of -- everybody's very cool in new
8:45 am
york. they don't want to, you know, look up at all. but people are very vocal. it's exciting. i'm so proud of the show, i'm so proud of everybody, we worked together, it's dreamy. >> are you working on becoming a demanding celebrity? you know, you need to do that. >> i totally messed up. i should have made requests in the green room earlier. >> like lavender lilies. >> i can tell you she's doing a great job. >> and laura, you're kind of like the person we fell in love with as a character because we liked to hate her so much. >> thank you. i take that as a compliment. >> i mean it as a compliment. we'll see you in season two, but we're going to really see you in every episode in season three, i hear? >> yes, definitely. i'm really excited because i missed everybody so much during season two. but we started shooting yesterday, and it's awesome. i can't wait to get back to work. >> all those binge-watchers, no pressure. but they are waiting, so hurry up. >> taylor schilling, laura prepon, jason biggs, and
8:46 am
uzo aduba, thank you for being here. season two of "orange is the new black" now available on net flefle flix. coming up next, creative summer meals in 30 minutes or less.
8:47 am
8:48 am
"today's kitchen" is brought to you by maxwell house. good to the last drop. back now at 8:45 with today's fresh takes kitchen. a summer meal in just about 30 minutes. donatella apaya is the owner and chef of sienna restaurant. good morning. nice to see you. >> nice to see you. >> you love fresh ingredients. so you're working from your own garden a lot. >> yes. actually, we have a guard rn right in east hampton too where we're getting all of our ingredients locally sourced. this is our biggest seller at sienna in east hampton. and even you can do this, matt. >> a little early for cherry
8:49 am
tomatoes, right? >> exactly. but when you roast it, it makes it really sweet. and this dish you can use throughout the year. >> i read the instructions on this. it is quick. you can do this in a short amount of time. >> pour in that garlic. a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil. garlic. and basil. will you toss this? put your notes down. >> you're basically looking to do this whole. they go into the oven whole. >> now i'm infusing the olive oil. you put this in the tray and bake it in the oven for about 25 to 30 minutes at 350. every oven is different but this is the texture you're looking for. >> they wrinkle up and soften up. >> in the meantime, i'm infusing this olive oil and you want to keep an infusion on low heat. do you like things hot? >> i like them a little spicy. all or halfsome. >> whatever you want. >> let's do most. >> now we're going to add this right in. >> is this on? >> it's on, but we should raise the heat a little bit.
8:50 am
that's really hot. now, this is the fun part. you can get out all your frustrations, start smashing. take a fork, and you want to release the juices now. you start smashing, smashing, smashing. >> you're so perfect, we don't like to get you dirty. >> let's say we've done our smashing here. >> handmade pasta. >> done you take a little of the water for that? >> look at you. you're teaching me how to cook now. you want the reserved pasta water. >> okay, i'm going to turn this down. >> this is ready. >> regular spaghetti? >> i got hand cut homemade pasta that you can get in the specialty store or online. you can use regular spaghetti if you want. right in. it's this easy. this literally people go crazy over this. you toss it. if you need a little bit more juices, you add a little pasta water. if you want to be a little bit bad, you can add a little butter to finish it off. don't tell my mom, she doesn't
8:51 am
like when i use butter. but it does smooth it off. >> and then you plate that, and to make the dish complete, you add to the top -- >> go ahead and say it. >> a cheese that you can't pronounce. >> spraccatella. >> we only have one minute left. >> by the way, you can use that same sauce and put it over steak. >> or fish if you actually caught some that time. >> nice. >> and this is a great watermelon dessert with yogurt mint. it's fun for father's day with a little surprise on top. give it a try. >> watermelon yogurt. what else? >> yogurt. cream. the recipe is right online or you can go on your facebook page or mine. >> pop rocks go in here? >> pop rocks. it's sparkling. it's light, and it's fun. isn't it fun? >> sweet and salty. >> sweet and salty. some pop rocks.
8:52 am
a little mint. it's a healthy dessert. >> and you can make it all in no time. >> in 30 minutes flat. and you can have this at my new summer restaurant in east hampton. >> sienna. thank you very much. check out the recipes on our website at today.com, and next i am officially on facebook. you going to friend me? >> will you be my friend? >> yes, absolutely. giving you the chance to ask some questions in a couple minutes. savannah's going to help me out, but first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:53 am
8:54 am
back at 8:00-ish. 8:54. it's a moment that's going to live in "today" show history as matt joins facebook. it's this clever application invented approximately a decade ago. >> someone just said to me you know you're too old for facebook when you need your glasses. very nice. >> so you're going to do a live chat. people are sending you questions. so you can reply. here's one. so, samantha, i love you. >> what's the most awkward interview you've had in your career? >> we're off to a good start. >> so if you want to reply, you can hit reply. >> okay. so i am going to -- >> you know how to use a lap sto
8:55 am
top, so that's good. >> no, no, no! oh, my gosh. watching you is painful. >> come on, you're an expert. >> let's just get over here. now you just hit click, reply. now you write your reply right here. >> okay. >> click in the box. >> can i read it alloud as you o here? >> a bit awkward with tom cruise a while back. that's true. you press enter. >> enter, good. >> and you sent your first reply. >> did i use too many? >> no, i think it was actually worthy of that sentence. i count four exclamation points. >> that's a little excessive. >> just scroll down here. there we go. >> what did i say? >> watching paint dry. >> the best part, al, this is going to go on way into your 9:00 hour. >> later we're going to watch some plants grow. it will be very interesting. >> this wasn't meant to be entirely on the air.
8:56 am
and by the way, as we go further into this, savannah types like a blue streak and she's going to be doing the typing. >> it will speed it along. good job. we're out of time. >> thank you very much. can i leave? >> no, no, no! we are just getting started. >> and that goes my experiment into facebook. >> we're live on facebook. matt is answering your questions. >> what is savannah guthrie really like? >> oh, i'll take that one. we're back after your local news. nbc 10 news starts now. good morning, everyone. i'm chris cato. it's 8:56. let's get the forecast with bill henley. >> lots of fog around, showers, too, and we're seeing cloud cover that will be slow to ease. you can see a live view of center city and starting to brighten up a bit and still plenty of low clouds and fog, too. not too many showers left and
8:57 am
dyinging down over southern salem county and a few the scattered showers and the showers taking a break now, but they'll be back later today. the showers are starting to thin out with one exception in northeast philadelphia. quarter-mile visibility there. it will be a cloudy start with highs in the 80s later today. a traffic alert for you. we had a tractor trailer accident causing problems. jillian mele has that. >> it's happening on 95 southbound. the off ramp, route 896. one of the viewers just sent this photo over twitter and he says you can see all of this activity. that's the overturned tractor trailer. so this ramp is completely blocked off. 95 southbound, the route 896 off-ramp is closed as a result of this accident. we're not seeing delays on 95 itself, but just watch as you approach that accident. people will begin a protest march in just a few minutes. they're fighting a looming shutdown. the tent city is located on
8:58 am
lakewood on owned property. this encampment is dangerous and a nuisance. it's demolishing the tents and shanties wanting them completely gone this week. protesting this e vick, people are marching to the town square to demonstrate there. we'll cover that for you and let you know what happens. just ahead on the "today" show, royal pains star talks about the show's sixth season. we'll see you for another update.
8:59 am
9:00 am
from nbc news, this is "today's take" with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist, and tamron hall, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. it's june 10th, 2014. the rain has passed through new york, a mh better day today. a little bit overcast. i'm willie geist along with al roker, and yes, dylan dreyer with us. >> yea! >> this is weird, right? >> no, it's great. >> al and i at the same table. >> the only time we're out together is when there's a bad storm and we're out covering bad weather. >> there's a lot of meteorological expertise. tamron is out today. natalie is out on assignment. a lot of people talking today about hillary clinton, her book "hard choices" is out. a lot of people wondering is it
9:01 am
a prelude to a presidential run. >> no! >> not a chance. >> she's been talking a lot. she's been asked about benghazi. she's been asked about monica lewinsky. she's been asked about her record as secretary of state, which is what she writes about for the most part. cynthia mcfadden, nbc's senior legal investigative correspondent, sat down with secretary clinton for an interview that airs tonight on nightly news and asked mrs. clinton about another influential woman in politics. very interesting answer here. >> the obama staff, the campaign wanted you to attack sarah palin, and you say you wouldn't do that. >> the day she was nominated, so it was after the convention that nominated president obama and vice president biden, the day she was nominated, the obama campaign did contact me and asked me if i would attack her. i said, attack her for what, for being a woman? attack her for being on a ticket that's trying to draw attention? there will be plenty of time to do what i think you should do in politics, which is draw
9:02 am
distinctions. >> that's in 2008 during the campaign, she was asked to come around for barack obama, then senator obama and said no, i won't do it, i won't go after sarah palin. i think that's the first time we've heard her say that. the entire interview, by the way, is tonight on "nightly news." i think it's -- we play the game and say will she, won't she run. i think most people would be stunned if hillary clinton did not run for president. >> i think that's more stunning. >> i think it's when is she going to make the announcement that she's running. >> and this book tour is almost the beginning of this campaign. two and a half years from election day. >> you can feel it. >> it's only 2014 right now. >> election day is two and a half years away. but the campaign begins today. >> right now. >> with the release of her book. >> and maybe by 2016, we'll know who owns the l.a. clippers. >> he's not going away. >> it will not stop. so donald sterling sends out -- his attorneys, they send out a press release. the team is not for sale. boom. he released this to a bunch of news organizations. he says, from the onset, i
9:03 am
didn't want to sell the clippers. he's going to fight. he says adam silver acted hastily and enforced this illegal sale. so earlier this morning on "today," matt talks to sterling's attorney bobby samini, asking about the details of the ban, which is one of the problems sterling has with this thing. >> did mr. sterling not understand that the fine would stand and the lifetime ban would stand when he agreed, it seemed, to this deal last week? >> that was not the understanding. i'm not going to go into the particulars of the discussions, but that clearly wasn't the understanding. of course, adam silver has come out now and made it clear that he's not going to back off. but again, matt, i think the bigger issue here is that my client is out to clear his name, and he's going to basically expose the nba for what it is. it's a band of hypocrites. >> and that, my friends, is the warning shot across the bow. guess what, we're going to depose every one of you guys. did you ever use bad language?
9:04 am
did you ever talk disparagingly about people of different races? so the nba executive vice president for communications michael bass told us in a statement, there was never a discussion involving the nba in which we modified mr. sterling's penalty in any way whatsoever. any suggestion otherwise is a complete fabrication. >> and this is a 180 from a couple weeks ago. said all right, what's done is done. i'm walking away from the team. >> his wife and the trust had worked out a deal to sell to steve ballmer, formerly of microsoft. and now, uh-uh, nope. >> and that's what keeps the story going on and on. just when you think it's getting to that peak, and now we're starting over again. >> yeah, it's interesting to hear sterling's attorney with matt. they are on the offensive. we talked about the nba being a league of hypocrites. he's talking about gender discrimination, cases they settled and they didn't throw those people out of the league so they're going to try to use that as some standing to keep steriling in the nba. >> a nightmare. and also a nightmare. i've actually had this nightmare before. >> this is horrifying. >> an elevator out of control.
9:05 am
everybody has that moment where the doors take a little extra time to open. watch this video. it's an elevator in chile, where a man was seriously injured. imagine going from floor one to the 31st floor in 15 seconds. >> with the doors open. >> and that's the weird thing. usually you fear the elevator dropping. this thing's accelerating up. >> there are amusement rides based on elevators going down. he ends up crashing into the roof of the building. he suffered serious head and leg injuries. the other doors shut before the main door shuts. oh, my gosh. that is one of those -- would you rather go up or down in an out of control elevator? >> i don't know that either one -- although probably going up. >> you're not in a free fall. >> although if you're going down, they're supposed to have those fail safe brake kind of things. >> should be something. the poor guy, almost looks like he's scared stiff. he doesn't even know, what do you do at this point. >> i hope he's okay. have you ever been stuck in an elevator? >> an extra five seconds, it freaks me out. >> the door doesn't open, you
9:06 am
