again being asked to intervene. we'll go live to nbc's jim miklaszewski at the pentagon in a moment. but we begin with richard engel who has made his way to northern iraq this morning, richard, good you. ive milts c offensive. and so far, the iraqi government seems powerless to stop it the prime minister is calling on average citizens to take up arms to try to recapture their citizens. he's asking the united states to intervene with aircraft, with drones, intelligence, whatever is necessary. the iraqi government is losing control of large parts of northern and central iraq. some iraqi security forces are fighting. but most appear to be stripping off their uniforms in the streets, abandoning vehicles and weapons. they're retreating from islamic

extremists, an offshoot of al qaeda, which took over iraq's second-largest city, mosul and then overnight advanced further. occupying large parts of tikrit and beiji. civilians are fleeing -- officials say up to 500,000 displaced already. the u.s. fought a nearly decade-long war, costing thousands of american lives and a trillion dollars for this not to happen. many of the radicals are the same insurgents u.s. troops battled for years. they're now aligned with militants from syria. creating a single front. their leader? abu al bagdhadi. some say he's the real heir to osama bin laden. the u.s. with its $10 million bounty for him. why is this happening? sunni ruled iraq for 13 centuries until the u.s. invasion toppled saddam hussein, ushering in a shiite regime. the sunnis want their country

back. they hate the shia government, which has excluded them from power and there are no u.s. troops around any more to stop them. this militant movement, savannah, is not just a problem for syria and iraq. many of the fighters are also very anti-american and there are thousands of them operating now openly across, between syria and here in northern iraq. >> and richard, this is something that you and i talked about a few weeks ago, now i'm hearing experts saying the same thing, that the region with islamic militants in iraq, is actually more dangerous than pre-9/11 afghanistan. >> that should be a warning to many. afghanistan of course, before 9/11 was where the 9/11 attacks were hatched. many experts i've been speaking to believe this region, the open battlefront between iraq and syria is the new breeding ground, where the new bin ladens are being born. there are about 10,000 foreign fighters, including 3,000 with

european passports who could easily come into europe and then perhaps make their way into the united states. most security officials and definitely military officials are now acutely focused on this region and what is happening right now with the iraqi government and with this movement, which is called isis, the islamic state in iraq and syria. >> richard engel in northern iraq for us this morning, thank you very much. >> we want to bring in jim miklaszewski at the pentagon. mick, the iraqi government wants the u.s. to consider air support against the militants. what's the talk about that at the pentagon and do you think the administration has any appetite for this? >> there's a real possibility that the u.s. could somehow be drawn back into a war in iraq. but so far, the president has not made that decision. according to officials we're talking to. now the iraqi government has asked the u.s. military to fly combat missions with man fighter aircraft and armed drones over those militant encampments,

launch air strikes against those groups. but so far, the white house has said no. and official here says look, we're not going to war in iraq any time soon. but the issue does remain under consideration. and as richard mentioned a minute ago, the real fear here is that these militants are going to turn iraq into a safe haven from which they could launch terror strikes against western targets, including the u.s. and i said this is going to be a tough call for the president. he campaigned on ending the war in iraq. he pulled all u.s. forces out of iraq nearly three years ago. so to send american forces back into iraq would be a very tough decision for him to make. and perhaps a hard one for americans to accept. matt? >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon, mick, thank you very much. closer to home, we move to the tragic school shooting to oregon. the gunman has been identified as 15-year-old jared michael padgett, official says he was so heavily armed, many more lives

could have been lost. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest. >> investigators tell us the gunman arrived here on campus like any other student, with a duffle bag and a guitar case to conceal his weapons. they say he walked onto the school grounds inside a gymnasium, then shot to kill. when police arrived at reynolds high, officers engaged the suspect in a gun battle. detectives say 15-year-old jared michael padgett was armed with an ar-15 rifle, a semiautomatic handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. >> the shooter also had a large knife. he was wearing a nonballistic vest. he was also wearing a multi-sport helmet with a camouflage design. >> police say padgett appeared ready for war. when he shot and killed 14-year-old emilio hoffman for no apparent reason. the freshman victim, who excelled at science and history

was also a stand-out soccer player. his mother asking his friends to quote be happy like emilio. smile like him, laugh like him. >> if someone was down, he would always crack jokes to make them smile. and i think that's a true friend was like and i feel horrible that he had to just go. >> p.e. teacher todd risler was grazed during the gunfire. many called him a hero. he ordered the school lockdown seconds after police say padgett fired his first shot and before he took his own life. >> i said hi to him, he kind of gestured, but didn't say anything. >> destiny henry saw the alleged gunman, her friends, minutes before the shooting. >> people will think he's a huge monster and he's really not. >> with who motive for the bloodshed, this morning police have few answers. all that's left on this campus is heartbreak. the suspect's neighbor tells nbc

news that their family is in shock and in disbelief. they say the older son had served in afghanistan in the military. they say police say that the suspect got the guns from the family home. savannah? >> miguel almaguer, thank you very much. new fallout this morning from house majority leader eric cantor's stunning primary defeat. they say he'll step down from his post as debate rages over why he lost. nbc's capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell has more on this. >> good morning, matt, the political shock waves are still being felt across virginia's seventh district. and here on this college campus, where a little-known professor new to politics with the help of his 23-year-old campaign manager toppled eric cantor, who by many in this community didn't spend enough time paying attention to the home district. the fallout means that house republicans will be choosing a new leadership team next week. facing the cameras were an

uncomfortable task. eric cantor kick off a summer shake-up for the house republican party. >> while i will not be on the ballot in november, i will be a champion for conservatives across the nation, who are dedicated to preserving liberty and providing opportunity. >> while cantor will stay in congress until january, he will give up next month his spot as majority leader. a role that made him powerfully nationally and it turns out vulnerable back home. >> he is a leader, seen sitting down with the president. trying to work things out in a time when people want to stand up to the president. i think it became combustible. >> the conservative challenger who caught that fire is dave bratt. >> i think a lot of his supporters are people that are very unhappy with government currently. >> brat was not at his own headquarters and kept a low profile wednesday. rush limbaugh spoke up for him. >> dave brat is not a whacko. he's not a kook.

vegas. and the couple who is behind it. investigators have released a chilling new video showing the last moments of the rampage. here's nbc's mike taibbi. >> the shock over the murders of officers and the innocent shopper will never recede completely for their familiar list. beck, a husband a father of three and a brother. >> the best older brother, think a person could have. >> i wish he was here to tell me what to do. because he always knew what to do. >> there's beck's other family, his brothers and sisters on the force. >> al loved being a police officer. >> police released this snippet of walmart's surveillance video, suspect amanda miller at bottom of the screen, aiming and seeming to fire her handgun at husband jared who is lying on his stomach. to explain why police first said she shot him before killing herself. the autopsy proved otherwise. >> the male was shot by police gunfire just prior to this

incident. >> more important than how the suspects died, is why they became killers in the first place. it turns out police had three contacts with the couple prior to last sunday. one last february, over comments jared allegedly made when his driver's license was suspended. >> if they come to arrest me for noncompliance or whatever, i'm just going to start shooting people. >> miller denied using those words. and the case was closed. the task now, to learn why two young people who shared an anti-government anger with so many others, ended here. mike taibbi, nbc news, los angeles. >> one priest is dead, another seriously injured in a shooting on wednesday night in phoenix. officers discovered the two victims when they responded to reports of a burglary. a 26-year-old priest died of a gunshot wound, the other priest remains in critical condition. police say they don't have a motive for the crime or any suspects. defense secretary chuck hagel said the decision to exchange five taliban leaders for army sergeant bo bergdahl

was done legally. in testimony, hagel said the decision to make the deal was a tough call for president obama. republicans and democrats have criticized the obama administration for not telling congress in advance. but hagel says the exchange had to be made quickly and any leaks would have wrecked the deal. an off-duty police officer being hailed as a hero today after a car plows into a gas pump and bursts into flames, it happened in new york, it was caught on camera. police say the 70-year-old driver had a diabetic emergency and lost control of his car. the gas pump bursting into flames, an off-duty police officer initially ran from the scene and seconds later ran back in and was able to pull the elderly driver from the car just in time. four cars were damaged, six people hurt. but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. incredible and thank goodness for the off-duty police officer. the new york rangers living to see another day after beating

the l.a. kings in game four of the stanley cup finals this one proved that hockey truly is a game of inches. take a look closely, what happens late in the third period, the rangers clinging to a 2-1 lead. the kings got a shot off, it goes right between henrik lundqvist's leg, but it stopped just an inch short of the goal line. so the rangers win it 2-1. it's getting excited. the kings leading the stanley cup finals three games to one. but maybe the rangers are coming back. the series shifts back to los angeles for game five. you can catch it here on nbc friday at 8:00 p.m. eastern, 5:00 p.m. pacific. just by that much. >> i was at the game last night, you should have heard the gasps. you could see it on the overhead monitors, everybody was like -- >> a huge sigh of relief. here's a tour guide that is not only informative but hands-on. this is a scene in the louisiana swamp.

they may be convenient, but now some taxi drivers say they're not fair and they might even be illegal. nbc's kerry sanders is in miami. kerry, good morning. >> well good morning, matt. in most of the bigger cities, around the world really, when you need a cab you just sort of assume the stance like this and hail a cab. but increasingly, it's getting a lot easier with your phone. you just click on a ride-sharing app like this, push a button and you get a car within minutes. the question, of course, now is -- is this legal? with the simple click of an app -- a driver in a private car gets an alert and within minutes, your ride arrives. but in many cities across the country, some regulators are saying apps like lift, uber and side car are illegal. >> we just can't have folks coming in and just operating, setting up shop. because the question becomes

where does it stop? >> in miami last week, police confiscated and impounded some drivers' cars, maria kristina was caught and fined. >> i got two tickets. >> for how much? >> $1,000 each. >> so total $2,000? >> $2,000, exactly. >> you now know this is illegal? >> yes, but i hope it's going to be legal soon. >> in her case, lyft is paying those tickets, the fare up for grabs is huge -- uber, valued at $18.2 billion is the biggest of the ride share companies. operating in 128 cities across 37 countries. on wednesday, in london, paris and madrid, traditional taxi drivers protested. bringing traffic to a standstill. an uber spokesman says we oppose efforts by big taxi and special interests to limit consumer choice. >> their rules apply to commercial vehicles. and these are personal vehicles

who are exchanging payment in the form of a donation. >> taxi operators pay upwards of $1 million for a medallion to operate in some cities. they say a taxi is a taxi. >> it's an atrocity. i think that they're very brazen to be operating against the law. >> i think the question that consumers are asking in these cities across the country is who are these enforcement actions serving? >> well here in miami/dade county, the county mayor says he'd like to try to figure out a way to make the apps legal. in houston where they're having the same debate, they're going to vote next month on whether to allow them or not. of course, matt, as you know in new york there was a very loud contentious debate before the apps went live. >> a lot of people are banking on them being legal. because didn't they just value uber at something like $18 million. >> you can't find a cab around here, that's what you do. it happens often. >> kerry sanders, kerry, thank you very much. let's check the weather now from mr. roker.

kennebunkport, maine, president george herbert walker bush is turning 90. so let's go back to his granddaughter, jenna bush hager warks big announcement. i guess we couldn't expect him to sit around eating cake all day. how is your grandfather planning to celebrate? >> he's planning like a lot of 90-year-olds do. he just tweeted that it's a wonderful day in maine, in fact, nice enough for a parachute jump. yes, my grandfather is going to sky-dive once again for his 90th birthday, which is pretty unbelievable. he told me this at his 88th and we all thought the plan was a bit ambitious. but we're all thrilled, even my grandmother, that he's following through with that plan today. >> so you did a jump at 80. 85. >> i've had several of them since the war. >> you think you're done with sky-diving? >> no, i got one more left in me. june 12th, 2014. and it will be fun.

>> and so today, my 90 years young grandfather will once again celebrate his birthday at 10,000 feet. with retired members of the u.s. army's golden knights. at this point it has become a time-honored birthday tradition. on his 80th birthday he jumped in texas. on his 85th, kennebunkport. my grandfather's passion for sky-diving comes from a moment that changed him forever. as a 20-year-old fighter pilot, one of the youngest in world war ii, his plane was shot down over the pacific. his only option? parachute into the open water. amazingly, he suffered only minor injuries. and was rescued by an american submarine. seven decades later, that one day remain as vivid memory. >> and you were so young, were you scared? >> well you felt being scared sometimes. not all the time.

certainly when i was coming down in the parachute, i was scared. and i was scared when i was in the water swimming. get away from the japanese island, i was scared. >> that experience actually sparked your love of sky-diving. >> i think so and i did it wrong. i pulled the rip cord too early, hit the tail of the plane with my head, just a glancing blow. and that, i decided that later on, well i want to do it right. and so that did spark my interest in making another jump. this time getting it correct. >> there are other men on the plane who didn't -- >> two that were killed. >> and you still think about those men? >> a lot. i think about them all the time. what could i have done different to save their lives. and then on the kind of a -- theoretical, why me? why was my life spared. >> do you feel like you used that second shot at life to the best? >> well i'm sure i could have done a lot of things better, but it's been a fulfilling time in my life and a lot of experiences

compared to the body. because a force was like this, you don't need to go there. then you finally get a feeling. because when he talks, he's always talking to a lot of people. and making speeches. but it's even more funny to kind of just be more quiet with his son. struggling. >> you know there are these quiet moments in the film. it's obviously a technological feat, it's beautiful to look at. but it's a great story. we meet hiccup's mother. >> absolutely. it's a surprisingly emotionally complex movie. it's exhilarating and it takes animation to a whole new level. but you know, the story itself is, is fun, but it's very moving and emotional as well. and i think there's a lot for, depending where you're at, kid, there's a lot to take out of the movie. >> the reviews have been great. i was reading up about you, learn that you have a law degree. >> can you believe it? >> tell me about that. did you ever practice law? >> i did.

good saturated fat. >> you're going to make a simple one to begin with. this doesn't take very long. >> i'm going to cook one of my favorite-ever cuts, it's the ribeye. everyone has got their own favorite. what's yours? >> i like ribeye, porterhouse, anything. >> you're in the right house today. >> perfect. >> a little bit of oil. you can use olive oil, extra virgin olive oil. i use a bit of coconut oil. >> one of the reasons you're using it, it allows the spice to adhere to the steak. >> that's right. we're going to get into the spices. do you feel like doing a little bit of manual labor? mortar and pestle, salt, peppercorns, the easiest spice mix in the world and it's delicious, rosemary and chili. >> do some grinding there. >> i've done that and i've done that well, it's going to come out looking like that. >> that's what it looks like. we grab some of that. we sprink it will over the steak. then we put quite a bit on. we want that flavor. then we pick it up. pop it on to the grill.

and that's what we want. >> repeat on the other side? >> a bit more on the other side. >> how long would you cook a ribeye like that in. >> that's a gorgeous ribeye, mate, that's going to take probably five minutes on each side. maybe even six to seven and then we're going to rest it. >> that's important. >> you rest it for half the amount of the cooking time if we cook it for ten minutes, then we rest it for five before we even think about slicing it. now to slice it, if you want to, you can pop it back on the grill to give it a little more heat, sort of just kiss it before you serve it and to slice it, you go against the grain. so look at that ribeye. >> that's beautiful. i'm going to steal a piece of that. >> before you do that -- >> drizzle with some lemon? >> lemon or acid with meat, it might sound counterproductive or counterintuitive. but it's gorgeous. >> a little more complicated. a little more elaborate sauce with mushrooms.

what cut of meat? >> sirloin. it's again, you can't go wrong -- >> this is unbelievable. good. >> he loves my food. so sirloin, cook it on either side. probably four to five minutes again on this, let it rest. pop it on the plate. my favorite, accompaniment with steak has to be mushrooms. >> what kind of mushrooms? >> field mushrooms or portabella or swiss. you can't go wrong. a little coconut oil, olive oil, good herbs, garlic and spoon some of that on to the steak. >> you serve it with some greens? >> we always serve with greens, mate. i follow a paleo diet, good quality meat. make sure the animals had a natural diet, good health, and lots of vegetables, you can't go wrong with beautiful fresh salad. that's -- >> that's screams happy father's day right there. look at that. >> and you mentioned the

take a look what's been going on just outside of kansas city, heavy storms moving through. you travel down along this front, you get to oklahoma city, more heavy showers and thunderstorms have been passing through. we're going to continue to watch this. because we have a risk of strong storms from san angelo on into little rock. parts of oklahoma, into central mississippi, we're watching these, could see a tornado or two. plus up here in the northeast we've got this meandering front. it has not gotten anywhere. we continue to have the showers and heavy thunderstorms dumping a lost rain. from west virginia all the way into central new jersey, we've got flood watches in effect. because we could be looking at anywhere from rainfall rates of about an inch per hour, some areas as much as three inches per hour. so we're watching this very closely. that's what's good morning. i'm meteorologist bill henley. lots of fog. plenty of clouds and more showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for today. heavy downpours and the threat of flash flooding later today.

can't bring in anything for birthdays. we totally respect that, it's a terrible problem to have. where does this come from? >> besides the hygiene hypothesis, something that makes a lot of sense is parents are so afraid, they with hold these high allergen foods thinking i'll protect my child. and your system can get bored, you should stimulate it and also our food supply is changing. another school of thought is maybe that's happening. what remains is, the big eight you know of food allergens. and that's peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish, and then it's wheat, milk, eggs and soy. >> let's talk about warning signs, dr. payne. is it usually an immediate reaction to food? >> it can be variable. it can be within minutes of eating food. it can be delayed. typical systems could be itching of the mouth and throat, breaking out in rash, hives, swelling of the skin. stomach aches, nausea and

clear he didn't want to talk about it. through writing this book, what a great time to do it. he said, i don't think so. i don't want to get into it. and popped into my e-mail box, this full beautiful chapter and he remembered everything. the guys and the roads and the villages. that's one piece, you think you know your parents so well, one i knew nothing about and now i do. >> you never wanted to talk about it? >> no, i just -- i'm big on denial when it works. yeah. >> what did you hear back from people that are responding to the book? >> it is funny. everyone is relating to this book. we thought we were sort of strained for not having had these big talks. and we're hearing, you know what, i never had that sex talk with my mom. somehow we fumbled our way around and we find our way, and i think people are saying, parenting isn't that easy, you know? you make it up as you go sometimes. we're getting not just fathers and sons but mothers and daughters. >> poor cody, he had to get the
