taken over by kurdish forces. >> hundreds of iraqi men are joining the fight to protect their country. they have come to volunteer centers answering a call to defend iraq. >> just a few hours ago, iran's president offered his country's help to iraq. our chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in iraq this morning following all of the developments for us. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. hassan rouhani said that iran would consider helping the united states if the united states was sincere in its fight against terrorists in this country. that could be a change of alliances across the region. alliances are shifting. right now we are in the city of kirkuk. this place has long been contested. it is home to about 15% of all of iraq's known oil reserves. everybody in the country has long wanted it. now it is held by kurdish militias. things are changing her rapidly as militants from isis are

approaching iraq's secstcity mosul, is now islamic sharia law. tants al qaeda offshoot i d sis decreed all women must veil. mosul was one of the first cities occupied by u.s. troops a decade ago. american officials said democracy would then spread from here. and the men the united states trained to fight the isis assault are still surrendering. with no protection hundreds of thousands of civilians are leaving mosul. this family walked 20 miles to escape mosul. now this 20 is their home. omar blames the u.s.-backed shiite prime minister, saying he alienated all sunnis in the country, made them feel second class. volunteers and aid workers are

building tents as fast as they can. there has been a massive wave of people fleeing their homes. the fear here is this is just the beginning. kathy robinson says the displaced hundreds of thousands need food and shelter. >> it's dusty, it's hot. there's nowhere to stay, there's nowhere to go. >> reporter: but this conflict may have changed. the shiite majority awoke. in theol citofla where shia islam was forged in battle 13 centuries ago, volunteers signed up for a new war. shiite clerics called the faithful to arms. and promised those who died fighting isis a place i ong from the prime er so fha not seen much from the iraovernmen o the iri secury forc ve been dropping their t uniforms. today maliki said that the government and the army will

strategic problem that is not going to change the arc of the conversation on the battlefield over the long term. >> i don't mean to open up a political conversation, but any way youook at it, the u.s. fingerprints are on the situatn in that's led to this at this point, so is doing nothing an option for the u.s.? >> i think doing nothing is an option. it's a stronger option than boots on the ground. if we do have boots on the ground maybe limited numbers of people in special operations and training, but i don't think it's going to change anything whatsoer. what's really interesting is that you're liable todp with a very big civil war that will last six months to two years and ultimately you'll wind up having a blood-thirsty despate in c oq wheretart from. >> back where we started from, but eight years of war, 4,000 pars can soldiers killed, $2n e l at goingback, that all that gets? >> yes, all that will have been erased. you can't make it up.

according to the ukrainian defense ministry, reportedly killing all 49 people on board. of course the question is where the rebels get this military hardware from. the ukrainian government has accused of russians of supplying it, an accusation denied by russia, but yet indeed yesterday the state department says it believes several rocket launchers and some tanks had crossed the border from russia into eastern ukraine. with this loss of the largest death toll for the ukrainian military in a single instance since unrest began, tensions in the region are escalating again this morning. the newly elected president, petro poroshenko's proposals for peace are n beingiven muc chance for success. >> thank you. former p.o.w. bow beg doll -- bowe bergdahl is spending ay a day after h u retuo texas. a team of health
