nbc 10 breaking news. we begin with breaking news this morning, a collapse and fire in delaware leaves at least one person dead and the search continues for other possible victims. and deadly tornadoes strike a small town in nebraska. some estimate the two twisters destroyed more than half of the town. get ready for some heat. the temperatures are really going to rise today. maybe even into the 90s. good morning, everyone. this is nbc 10 news today, i'm vai sikahema. let's get to meteorologist bill henley with his first look forecast. you just mentioned before the show started, you have showers popping up in your radar. >> light scattered showers from philadelphia to the east and new jersey. the showers will not last. we're still on track for 90s

this afternoon. there are clouds over center city. the radar screen showing a few light showers just popping up over delaware county, south philadelphia and into new jersey, camden, gloucester, burlington county, tom's river, are seeing light scattered showers. the temperatures have dropped into the 60s and 70s, 74 right now in philadelphia but we're expecting a quick warmup. it's going to be a hot one today. clearing skies this morning to start with, 73 degrees by 9:00 we'll be close to 80 degrees at midmorning and lunch time, well into the 80s on our way to the 90s this afternoon. hour by hour look at the future weather when i come back. first, jillian mele has traffic. good morning, jillian. so far, no big accidents to report on the majors. this is a live look atç 95 nea girard avenue. we're not reporting any issues. this is in the midst of that

long-term construction zone near girard avenue. traffic is moving along fine. we have a disabled vehicle on the northeast extension just past the midcounty toll plaza. the right lane is blocked in that area. that is our only problem so far when it comes to the northeast extension. a live look at the ben franklin bridge. that's part of the long-term construction, the bridge track work that's happening there. one lane blocked on the eastbound side. westbound traffic is moving along fine and all of the area bridges are in the clear right now. vai? new castle county this morning, search and rescue crews are searching for survivors in this deadly fire and building collapse in wilmington, delaware. the flames broke out at a home on the 100 block of bird street and maryland avenue. jesse gary is at the scene.

>> reporter: they have found what they believe to be the lone fatality where that light source is. let's take a look at our video. flames started around 10:30 last night at a single family home, 100 bird street. the fire chief tells me there were heavy flames and a lot of smoke. two women were injured and rushed to area hospitals, one to christiana and one to krojer medical center. >> in this case because of the collapse, those were hindered. we had to get more water on to the fire and control the collapse. also the exposure, the structures that were next to the building started to show lean and some areas that looked like they could fall in as well. we had to shore them up before we could get into the building. >> the crews continue searching the debris and rubble. the other buildings have been deemed safe. some neighbors fear there could

be more victims but fire officials now believe everyone is accounted for. people who are believed to be not here are thought to be working the third shift. coming up in 30 minutes, you'll hear from a man who raced into the inferno to try to save a life. he was unsuccessful but you'll hear from him. two people are dead, include a child and 19 others are hurt after twin tornadoes tore through the nation's heartland. rescuers are on the ground right now, searching for survivors in pilger, nebraska. tracy davidson is live from our digital operation center with more. >> we've been getting new information overnight about the storms and the damage left behind. nebraska's governor declared a state of emergency. also national guard is deploying to assist in the local emergency responders to help with the

cleanup. here's what it looks like. here's what's left of that town of pilger after the storm. emergency crews and residents spent the night sorting through demolished homes and businesses. the stanton county sheriff's office confirmed one of the people killed was a 5-year-old child. we're not exactly sure how that child was killed. we did learn about the second victim who died overnight. hospital and emergency officials say more than half of the town of çpilger is destroyed. the national weather service said there were at least two twisters that touched down within roughly a mile of each other. and it's estimated that one of the tornadoes may have been on the ground for more than an hour. well, i asked nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley about that and he said that's rare, most only stay on the grounds for minutes. the tiny town is left almost unrecognizable. >> really incredibly tornado with a secondary tornado wrapping around it. >> there's the other tornado.

oh, gosh. >> again, this is a small town, less than 400 people. survivors are going through the damage and starting the salvage work. again, we can tell you, two people have been confirmed dead, including a child and 16 are critically injured. we are continuing to monitor the information and the feed for new pictures coming out of nebraska. we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. new over night, philadelphia police are investigating an accident involving an ambulance and a cap. witnesses say the cab may have ran a red light before smashing into the ambulance. one person in the cab was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. two other people are in stable condition. one person is still being questioned in the connection with the shooting of a 13-year-old boy that police say was all over a stolen bike. police say the boy was shot

twice yesterday in this car on 20th near moore street in south philadelphia. an undercover detective witnessed the shooting and followed the gunman and another person to a home on mountain street. this turned into a barricade situation that lasted for hours. >> i saw the cop going up in there, breaking the glass and everything. i said, oh, lord, please, if they find somebody please, let them get them out right now. >> nbc 10 was there as police took the homeowner into custody and recovered two guns. he's being questioned right now. police are looking for one or two others involved in the shooting. the 13-year-old boy is in critical condition. and now to the philadelphia school budget crisis. the superintendent and other educational leaders are making urgent calls for more money for the school district. school officials learned recently they'd get $120 million from city sales tax but millions more are needed to avoid cuts and layoffs.

from our south jersey bureau today, cooper university hospital announced a new program designed to shorten health care wait times for veterans in our area. katy zachry is live in camden with details on how they will make veteran care a priority. >> reporter: this focus on veterans has become a priority for hospitals around the country. after the v.a. hospital scandal surfaced earlier this year. from that we know that veterans up to 40 of them had died while possibly waiting for care from the v.a. hospital. after a nationwide audit of v.a. sites, about 100 were flagged for further review, including in new jersey and pennsylvania. veterans had to pate 43 day on average for a primary care appointment, for specialty care it was even longer.

the details of the program will ss conference later today. an important note to say that the program being announced later today at cooper will only go into effect if congress passes a bill allowing veterans to use civilian health care systems. that bill could be passed later this year. reporting live in camden, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> temperatures are getting ready to soar today. there are clouds over center city. we're getting a few isolated showers. we're all going to see the heat and a little bit more humidity today, turning hotter as temperatures into the 90s this afternoon. the hottest day of the season so far. you'll notice rising humidity. it will be up a bit today, and then go even higher tomorrow. the heat, the humidity fueling storms later tomorrow. there is a threat of severe weather for our area later

tomorrow. 68 degrees right now in allentown. clear skies in allentown. clouds have popped up in northeast philadelphia and millville, 74 degrees in northeast philly, 71 in millville. we are watching for a few showers as they've steered clear of the studio. a few showers popped up over philadelphia, into new jersey, camden, gloucester, burlington county. you can see they're moving to the east. tom's river, portions of ocean county getting some of the scattered showers. it's coming with clouds that move through overnight. those clouds are clearing north and west and those showers will keep on moving. we'll clear out an see lots of sunshine today. it's going to make for a quick warmup. starting off in the 60s and 70s, warming into the upper 70s by 9:00. 9:00, 78 degrees in philadelphia. look at the 70s north and west for allentown and reading and warming up for tom's river, 74

degrees. by noontime, upper 80s for the philadelphia area and still climbing, we're destined for the 90s this afternoon. showers will be in the area to start with today. then we get a break but storms tomorrow, a closer look at that potential when i come back. if you have an early morning shift, good news. the roads are pretty clear. here's jillian mele in the first alert traffic center. >> this is a live look at 76 near spring garden street. the eastbound side as drivers make their way into center city philadelphia. both directions looking quiet. 76 is clear the entire length of the way. we can't say the same about the northeast extension. there's a disabled vehicle just past the midcounty toll plaza. that's blocking the right lane. you could see a tap of the brakes on the northeast extension. but it's if the a problem by any means.

crews are searching through the rublg aftble after a house on fire near pitch street and maryland avenue. some roads are closed in the area. jesse gary is live on the scene gathering information there. he'll have a live report in just a few minutes. stay with nbc 10 and nbc10.com for updates. nearly 200 troops are in iraq and more could be on the way. defense officials say those forces moved into the country over the weekend and are providing support and security for u.s. personnel and the american embassy in baghdad. 100 other soldiers could be sent to a nearby country and held there until needed. meanwhile, president obama will make his way to pennsylvania today on his agenda, talking about the economy and tech shop in pittsburgh, a workshop and

prototyping studio. this afternoon, president obama will head to new york city to deliver remarks at the democratic national committee's lgbt gala tonight. the american red cross will announce its new and permanent valley. a press conference will be held in allentown this morning. the american red cross shelters feed and provide emotional support for victims of disasters. the suspect of a south jersey's mother murder, her own son. he's now undergoing a psychological evaluation. herbert rolette called police sunday night to report his mother was murdered inside their home. maryann was found dead on the living room floor. no one else was inside the home at the time. upper darby police are on the hunt for four teenagers who

recorded a violent attack on a homeless man and posted the video on facebook. the man was sitting at a trolley stop at burmont road and burlington avenue. police call this the knockout game. surveillance cameras also caught the assault. >> just walked up, engage in conversation and then he throws a sucker punch and knocks the guy right off the chair. i mean, he hit him so far, lucky he didn't kill him. fortunately he must have a hard jaw or a hard head. >> upper darby police need your help identifying the people in this video. if you recognize them, call police. actor and comedian tracy morgan has been upgraded from critical to fair condition. he was seriously hurt if a crash on the new jersey turnpike more than a week ago. a truck slammed into his limo bus killing a fellow comedian and seriously injuring two others. police say the driver had not slept for more than 24 hours. police in arizona have

arrested a man they say attacked two priests, killing one of them. the gun he used was ownedly one of those priests. authorities say this man, michael moran was the attacker. he's homeless and just got out of jail six weeks ago. last wednesday a priest went out to the church courtyard after hearing noises and was hit with a metal rod. he ran inside to get a gun and police say moran wrestled it away from him. that's when moran opened fire on another priest who was coming in to help. rhode island home worth nearly $2 million will have to be torn down or moved because part of it is on park property. the rhode island supreme court has ruled the developer that built the home has to tear it down or move it. the water front home was partly built on property that belongs to another family, which is designated for public use as a park. now the house has got to go. >> what kind of dummy puts their million dollar home on land without surveying it and making sure it's on their land.

>> who's to blame in the engineer who surveyed the property in 2009 made a surveying mistake which has now become a $2 million mistake. ouch. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. clouds moving through this morning and a few showers. you can see it is a bit damp in south philadelphia, the roads, spotty showers to start with but they're not going to last. philadelphia reporting light rainfall with a southwesterly wind at 7 miles an hour. 9 degrees warmer this morning. it will be a hotter day today. this is the view from the comcast center. the clouds are on the move, they move out, sunshine takes over. we're into the upper 80s to start with and then 9n later today. mostly sunny and hot. temperatures climbing into the low to mid-90s with westerly winds to 10 miles an hour. then it looks like we're in for

some wet weather, showers and thunderstorms and that includes the shore, the beaches. 79 degrees today. lots of sunshine. then it climbs into the upper 80s. you'll notice the humidity on the increase for wednesday and thursday. and showers and thunderstorms likely later on wednesday and into thursday. some of these could turn severe in the area on wednesday. and could still be in for heavy downpours into thursday. now, how long does the heat last inland? i'll show you when i come back with the seven-day forecast in the next half hour. jillian mele is in the first alert traffic center with an early morning look at the roads. >> the blue route, 476, you are in luck, as you can see, traffic is moving along fine in both directions, right near mcdade boulevard. drive times on 476 between 95 and 76 will take you about 17 minutes right now. disabled vehicle on the northeast extension we're in the county toll plaza, the right lane is blocked southbound

fence at jfk park, down an embankment and landed at the water's edge. crews were able to get the woman, a dog and a cat out safely. unbelievable, the usa wins its opening game at the world cup in brazil. the team beat ghana 2-1 with a goal in the 85th minute. it was a bit of a revenge. ghana beat the u.s. the last two times they met in the world cup in '06 and 2010. usa's next match is sunday against portugal who lost to germany by the way. world cup fever is making soccer fans sick in china. world cup fans are buying fake sick leave notes in order to watch the tournament. for about $8, a person can buy a

fake sick leave note on the internet and get out of work for a couple of weeks. lawyers have warned that people selling fake sick leave notes may be held criminally liable. so be careful. pete rose meanwhile back in pro baseball's dugout last night. it was a one-night only deal to manage the bridgeport blue fish of the independent atlantic league. rose received a lifetime ban as you know from major league baseball nearly 25 years ago. the atlantic league are not associated with major league baseball. and oh, by the way, the blue fish won, 2-0. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. it is a rainy start in philadelphia. citizens bank park is getting a little bit of moisture for that fine-looking field. clouds will break. it will be a hot afternoon. right now 73 degrees at 4:26. it doesn't look like a whole lot of traffic in south philly. >> not much traffic in south philly or chester county.
