nbc 10 news starts now. nbc 10 this morning in center city, people out and about at 2nd and lumbard streets. here's a look at cape may. the heat advisory also extends to the jersey shore. a busy weather morning. you can count on nbc 10 to keep you covered throughout the day and the morning. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today, i'm vai sikahema. more on that breaking traffic situation in a minute. we begin with the dangerous heat that we're expecting today. we have team coverage with nbc 10's katy zachry looking on how you can get relief today.

we begin with the first alert weather center. >> a hot and sticky day today. we'll see hot temperatures by the afternoon. it looks like we're starting off rather warm this morning all across the area, vai. mainly clear skies. you can't see the heat but you can feel it once you step outdoors. temperatures at this hour already at 80 degrees this morning. you know it's going to be a hot day. 80 for allentown, 81 for northeast philly. 78 down the shore. almost 80 for dover and 79 currently for wilmington. 77 for lancaster this morning. humidity is up. it's going to be a sticky morning and also muggy by the afternoon. 69% humidity for philadelphia and in the 50s for allentown. that's not going to go away today. it will be around also for tomorrow, too. we have heat advisories that have been issued for theç area you see shaded in orange. that starts from noon until 7:00

p.m. basically what that means is the temperatures, yes, the readings will be at 95 but with the humidity added to that, it will feel near 100 degrees throughout many of our neighborhoods. so please be careful out there. hydrate yourself. spend a lot of time indoors, limit your time outdoors as best you can. today, hot and humid. temperatures should be in the mid-90s. there is a chance and threat of some thunderstorms, mainly later on in the evening. i'll give you an hour-by-hour look at what to expect those, how much rain we're going to see. let's head over to katy zachry, live in camden county. you know it's going to be a hot one, at 2:00 a.m. when you and i were getting in the car and coming to work, temperatures were reading in the 80s. it's only again to get worse as you told us. because of that here in camden county they've issued a heat alert. it went into effect yesterday. it's still in effect today.

it begins at noon and lasts until 8:00. temperatures will be reading in the 90s. when there is a heat alert issued here in camden county they open up cooling centers. that's the good news. we visited one yesterday. it's a library that today will double as a cooling center, a place where kids and adults can go to stay cool. most cooling centers are at libraries or community centers throughout the county. here in collingswood, this one is at a library. you'll hear about the dual purpose these cooling centers offer kids today. reporting live, katy zachry, nbc 10. track the heat and humidity with our nbc 10 first alert weather app. down load it for free on n nbc10.com to get weather alerts

on your smartphone. let's check the traffic with jillian mele. >> route 70 at cuthbert boulevard now looks good. this is a live look at the 42 freeway. that's drivers passing creek road. area bridges are in the clear right now. although we have construction on the eastbound side of the ben franklin bridge. it's not causing slowdowns, though. the vine street expressway looking good out here. girard avenue, traffic moving by this construction zone. we're not reporting slowdowns on 95 either. >> new from overnight, philadelphia police are searching for the person who opened fire on a man while he was sitting on his front porch. this happened around 11:00 on west spencer street near 21st and germantown. police say the victim was smoking a cigarette when two people came by, one of them asked him "what are you looking at"?

>> the victim didn't make any comments that we're aware of. for some reason, these two males, one of them pulled a gun and fired at least six shots. >> one of them hit him in the thigh. he's in stable condition. both men took off. we're expecting test results from a montgomery county apartment complex. that's where police say a suspect wrote a letter laced with the poison ricin. cleanup crews have been on this job for months. >> they have. today is a key day. we'll find out what they found. we should know uxe results of samples taken at that apartment complex, if they are free of ricin after the scare back in march. ricen is made from the seeds of the caster oil plant and inhaling a few grains of the toxin can kill a person. in march, you might recall the standoff between police and 19-year-old nicholas hellman. he allegedly bragged to a co-worker that he made a scratch

and sniff birthday card for his exgirlfriend's new boyfriend. two days later, investigators found a container of leftover ricin stashed near the apartment. neighbors we spoke with haven't exactly enjoyed for their building to be checked. >> it's been going on for three months now. the ricin thing. we were really scared about that. we're worried about the kids in the courtyard more than anything else. >> plastic was placed over everything sprayed in the apartment. the suspect, nicholas hellman, he's awaiting trial in bucks county prison. stay tuned to nbc 10. as soon as we know the results we'll have it on air and on nbc10.com. live in the death tall operation center, tracy davidson, nbc 10 news today. one of the suspects accused in a main line drug ring is set to be arraigned later this morning. daniel mcgrath was one of the subdealers. it's alleged they sold cocaine, marijuana, hash oil and ecstasy

to students at several main line high schools and colleges. neil scott, one of the alleged master minds behind the drug operation has pleaded guilty. timothy brooks has a hearing scheduled for next month. governor kroit wichris chril be the special guest at a new substance abuse facility. it will be built on harding highway in pitts grove. a teenager shot over the robbery of his own bicycle is out of the hospital and talking to nbc 10. the 13-year-old was shot twice monday while looking for his stolen bicycle with his stepfather and a friend. the gunman opened fire on the car in which the victim was riding. the child's family ask we not give his name.

the evening hours. some of it could bring heavy rain at times. we are tracking that. it will feel muggy for today and tomorrow, too. but there is relief in sight. the heat advisory starts at noon until 7:00 p.m. that's where the areas shaded in orange from philadelphia to trenton, all the way up towards portion of new castle county there. the reason for that is because temperatures in the mid-90s, yes, that's hot but the humidity will make it feel even hotter, close to 100 degrees is what it will feel like later on in the afternoon. the hottest part of the day. maybe around 4:00 to 5:00. 80 degrees for allentown and pottstown and westchester. i'm seeing a lot of 80s here, 80 for mount holly, 79 for wilmington, stone harbor, 79 degrees. 77 for millville and glassboro, 77 degrees this morning.

on the radar, i was tracking a front moving through, a line of storms that just started to fizzle out. a few rain drops up in lehigh valley. that's about it. this won't last long. this is fizzling out. all that is really going to diminish. don't expect rain drops in philadelphia at least in the next couple hours or so. that will change later on tonight. your planner for wednesday, it's going to be a hot, sticky day today. 88 by noon. 95 the high for the day today. of course it will feel hotter than that with the humidity, heat index could be near 100 degrees. humid also for tomorrow, too. chance of thunderstorms is really after the 6:00, 7:00 hour. mainly we're looking at evening thunderstorms. the chance also for tomorrow, too. notice the numbers will be in the 90s still for tomorrow and then dropping a little bit friday. less humid for friday. this will be a relief. then this weekend we have the chance of thunderstorms back in the forecast and also for next week as well.

there are road construction crews out there you should be aware of. let's go to jillian mele. >> we have construction on the ben franklin bridge. just in, an accident in pottstown. that accident is at wilson street and farmington avenues, a vehicle that went into a pole. use caution in that area. northeast extension southbound just past quakertown, we have a little bit of construction there. keep that in mind. that's part of the long-term construction project, though. the vine street expressway is looking good. 59 passing 8th street and broad street and eventually out to 76. both directions on the vine are in the clean right now. i mentioned that construction on the brip. y that's on the ben franklin bridge. the right lane is blocked.

two lanes of traffic are getting by. it's not causing delays. we're following breaking news out of malaysia this morning. crews are searching for survivors after a boat carrying about 100 people sank. the boat sank off the coast of kuala lumpur. you can see it on the map. the people on board were from indonesia, many were women and children said to be headed home at the time. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you new developments as they hop. > this morning, there are safety concerns about one of the most heavily traveled highways in our area. and close encounter caught on camera. those stories and more on nbc 10 news today.ç

almost exactly 4:15 this wednesday morning. 80 degrees out there. take a gorgeous look at the lights of philadelphia from the comcast tower building in center city. todd florendo will be by with his forecast. deldot says crews have been creating new foundations for the tilting piers under the bridge in wilmington. 495 was shut down earlier this month after two people noticed the supports were tilting. deldot hopes to have some lanes open by labor day. on the heels of the 495 shutdown, the philadelphia controller wants to make sure we avoid a similar problem in pennsylvania. crews are storing the soil in

fishtown. the soil storage looks similar to what crews founded along side 495 in delaware two weeks ago which engineers believe left that breath unsafe. he wants penndot to review the situation here. >> we want to make sure the people in charge of safety in this area are alerted and focused on it. >> penndot says the dirt has not compromised the safety of i-95 and will be gone by lateç next week. officials also say the lengths of the support of the 495 bridge in delaware made it more susceptible to movement. on the crisis in iraq, president obama is not expected to approve air strikes against the islamic insurgency there, at least not now. u.s. officials say there are few clear targets that could stop the sunni revolt. the president is planning to brief top congressional leaders at the white house later today. and here at home, the gay community is applauding president obama for his support. he told a democratic

fund-raiser, u.s. laws have advanced the cause of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights. president obama added more work needs to be done to skew those rights. happening today, the top suspect in the 2012 benghazi attack is on his way to the u.s. to face justice. president obama confirmed the capture of ahmed abu khattala. he was wanted on the attack in benghazi that killed christopher stephens and three others. and new from overnight, two inmates have been put to death with no complications. the first since a botched execution in oklahoma in april. convicted killers in georgia and missouri were executed last night about an hour apart. another convicted killer is scheduled to be executed later today in florida. the botched execution in april

has raised concerns about lethal injection. and it's back to normal this morning at los angeles air force base following a nearly five-hour lockdown. there were reports of a man on the ground with ammunition and wires sticking out of his backpack. military personnel and police conducted a building to building search but came up with nothing. and this morning, we're trying to find out if the nation of ghana accepted an apology from delta airlines about a tweet that went wrong. >> it's john brooks! >> delta airlines tweeted its congratulations for its win over ghana in the world cup. it's how the tweet looked visually. the statue of liberty represents the u.s. a giraffe depicts ghana. only one problem, giraffes are not native to ghana. delta released a statement of

apology saying its tweet was inaccurate and inappropriate. two men in canada came face to face with a black bear and caught the whole thing on camera. take a look. >> we can't do this. you have to let us go today. >> the men had just finished fishing when they noticed the bear was tailing them. they kept backing away hoping the animal would lose interest but it didn't. the men say the scariest part was when the bear would jump on that tree and then rush at them. >> what part of me is going to get gouged or ripped open type of thing. there were three or four minutes of terror there. >> there were moments that our escape was not guaranteed in any way. >> after a few minutes they gained enough distance to run back to their car. an expert who was shown the video says it was a young bear displaying typical curiosity. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist teddç

florendo. the 90s back again. today will be hotter than yesterday for sure. we have heat advisories that go into effect at noon today. a live look outside as we take a look at the art museum, things are quiet. we don't anticipate strong winds though winds would help a little bit but not going to see it. temperatures are 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. yesterday was hot. so today, going to feel warm by the afternoon, even by midday. 80 degrees for pottstown. also for mount holly. 79 at wilmington, cooler down the shore but not much. 78 for atlantic city, 79 for georgetown. millville at 77 degrees. our numbers will drop a couple degrees, maybe about 5:00 to :00 a.m. then they'll go right back up again. we were tracking showers, still looking at some but they're

the crime happened june 8th. the police released this video yesterday. the thief used the victim's credit card at target, walmart and at a wawa. police officers in bucks county are getting ready to hit the streets wearing body-mounted cameras. the richland police department is spending $12,000 on eight cameras officers will take with them on patrol and emergency calls. the chief tells nbc 10 he hopes the cameras will provide evidence in criminal cases and when complaints are filed against officers. for the first time in 20 years, the lights are back on at a park long plagued by crime and drug activity. nbc 10 in camden where residents and community leaders came together to light up bonita
