nbc 10 news starts now. police are talking to some people of interest in the rittenhouse rape case. we are live with details this morning. diplomatic streak before military might. that's the goal of the u.s. in calming crisis in iraq. an update just ahead. right now you're looking live at a quiet and warm cape may. we are in for a warmer day today but another summer beauty shaping up, however, we have rain on the way for tomorrow. this is nbc 10 news today. i'm chrisç kato. let's get straight to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast. another warm morning out there. >> not bad. temperatures in the 60s right now, 69 degrees here at nbc 10. the humidity is on the low side

and it's going to stay on the low side again today. we will see sunshine warm things up. that's a live view from the lowe's hotel. looking towards new jersey. camden water front, looking at mostly dry conditions for our area today. that will change tomorrow. no sign of the 50s for most of the area. one exception, atlantic city at the airport, 59 degrees. 62 in trenton, 67 in northeast philly and 66 in wilmington. a mild start and a nice day ahead. we'll see the temperatures climb into the 70s to start with at 9:00, then into the 80s by lunch time today. we'll good hour by hour when i come back with the future weather. first, jillian mele has your traffic. >> i'm following construction right now, that overnight long-term construction on 95. girard avenue, here in the center lanes, but traffic is getting by. that's the southbound side over there, this is the northbound side. no delays as a result of that

construction but we are dealing with that active construction out there. the boulevard is clear in both directions. headlights you see drivers making their way southbound from fox street to 76, earlier this morning about an hour and a half ago we did have an accident on the southbound side of the boulevard near fox street but that has been cleared. no issues to report there. if you're headed out on 422 early this morning, 55 miles per hour seems to be the average speed, especially on the eastbound side, right near 29. then out to 23, we're still seeing speeds in the mid-5rz. chris? a teenage boy is clinging to life after being shot six times in north philadelphia. he's 18 years old. he was on the 400 block of glenwood avenue when he was shot. he walked a block to ortney before collapsing. new developments this morning, happening right now in the rittenhouse rape case. police are questioning four men.

they've collected at least two bicycles as potential evidence. nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside special victims unit in juniata where those men are being interviewed even at this hour, right? >> yes. i talked to someone a short time ago here at svu, saying they do anticipate charges will be filed. they're crediting good old-fashioned detective work with finding these men. let's go to our video. all four men live together on south 8th street and moore in south philadelphia. last night, detectives searched the home. we don't know specifically what they found inside but we do know they confiscated a couple of bikes. from new surveillance video, you can see the suspect in the upper left-hand corner locking his bike to a light pole seconds before he followed the victim. he puts his arm around her and forces her into her rittenhouse square apartment where police

say she was raped several times and robbed. after the victim sat down with a sketch artist, we have two new images of what the attacker looks like. she was walking home alone after being out with friends. the woman is 26 years old and a doctor at the hospital of the university of pennsylvania. coming up in theç next half ho, those four men who were brought here to svu for questioning, you'll hear what their neighbors are saying. reporting live in juniata, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. new information on breaking news we brought you last night at 11:00. utility crews are handling an underground steam pipe that burst in center city. these pictures were taken from skyforce 10 last night. this is the area of the pennsylvania convention center. heavy steam prompted police to shut down 13th street near race street. investigators say a store owner shot and killed a robber who broke in and held a knife to her chest. sharon doyle is a former

philadelphia police officer and former secret service agent. you see her in the video there. investigators say she had a revolver behind the counter when the man stuck a knife to her chest, she grabbed that gun and fired one shot. we heard from her last night. >> i'm grateful, too. i just did what i had to do to be here. i think this helped me the most. >> what is it? >> guardian angel. >> police say the robber had a long criminal record and was released from prison within the past year. they are calling this a justifiable homicide. five minutes after 4:00 now. from our trenton bureau, new jersey governor chris christie today will sign a bill that will help control property taxes in new jersey. the measure says that arbitrators can award police and fire unions a raise of no more than 2%. a signing ceremony is set for noon at the statehouse. a tentative auction date is set for the revel casino hotel. they filed for bankruptcy for the second time last week.

lawyers want the auction to happen on august 6th. they say without a quick sale there's no choice but to shut down and liquidate assets. revel employs about 3,100 people. out of our delaware bureau this morning, for the second time this month, a bridge in wilmington is shut down for repairs. the swinging river sits at the west end of the brandy wine park exercise loop. the bridge needs new decking and other repairs. officials tell us they should have it re-opened by the fall. and a much larger headache of course, commuters are still dealing with the closure of the 495 bridge in wilmington. engineers believe a large mound of dirt piled beneath that bridge caused some of the support columns to tilt. they say repairs should be finished around labor day. secretary of state john kerry is in iraq for the second straight day trying to help

iraqis avoid civil war. tracy davidson is live in our digital operation center this morning with the details on what's happening even at this minute. >> right, chris. kerry is meeting with a local leader in iraq who has been feuding with the prime minister. he's meeting with all sides saying you have to come together, get on the same page if you're going to stop the insurgents. in baghdad yesterday, kerry said the u.s. will not back the iraqi government the way it's set up now because it doesn't represent all sides. isis fighters have taking over cities in northern iraq and border crossings into syria and jordan. iraq has agreed to u.s. military advisers and a u.s. aircraft carrier is in the persian gulf in case the president orders air strikes on those militants. >> so this is a critical moment for iraq's future. it is a moment of decision for iraq's leaders and it's a moment of great urgency.ç >> kerry is in northern iraq today meeting with the leader of the kurds. after this he's expected to

visit ahman, jordan, brussels and paris to gain support from the u.s. allies for whatever military options the president decides to go with. live in the digital operation center, tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. investigators in georgia are hoping an autopsy will provide more information in the case of a baby who died after being left inside a hot car for several hours. the baby's father, justin ross harris, you see him here, is charged with felony murder. his 22-month-old sign died of heat stroke last wednesday. harris told them he forgot to drop off his son at day care and instead drove straight to work. he didn't discover his son until after he left work that afternoon. the autopsy could help police determine if the information the father gave to them is accurate. this case in georgia is a reminder to all of us about the dangers of kids and cars and the summer heat.

nbc 10's jesse gary is live in montgomery county. there's an average of 38 deaths every year due to children being left alone in hot cars. >> reporter: add to that a recent survey that found a quarter of adults admit they have intentionally left a child in an unintended vehicle. the weather and temperatures vary. officials with aaa say that is never a good idea. so far this year, there have been 13 deaths due to kids left in vehicles in extremely hot conditions. eight of those since memorial day when weather conditions and the heat nationwide have warmed. >> it's hot standing outside in the sun. you can only imagine how quickly the inside of a car will heat up, even when it's just 80 degrees out, which is not terribly hot. the temperature inside the car will reach 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. >> we set up our own experiment using crayons to illustrate how quickly the temperature inside a car can rise hot enough to melt

the markers. we'll show that to you coming up in the next hour. jesse gary, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> we have a pleasant day ahead. we will see some sunshine. it will stay dry. the temperatures will be climbing into the 80s. a warm afternoon. a little bit warmer than yesterday. though it will be dry, today we are watching showers and thunderstorms not all that far away. those are due in tomorrow. heading out the door right now, 61 in mount pocono, scattered clouds there. 66 degrees right now. not much wind, not expecting a lost wind today. what breeze we get will come out of the south. that will help our temperatures warm once again into the 80s. we saw a high of 83 degrees yesterday and it was clear. no sign of any rain. the radar shows nothing in the immediate area but look to the west. see some showers and thunderstorms in northwestern pennsylvania and that line is

making progress as it moves into the midwest, st. louis, the chicago area getting showers and thunderstorms. it expends to the deep south, memphis and mississippi this morning. that's where the stormy weather is. that will be here for tomorrow. for today we'll see some scattered clouds moving through. the future weather shows 9:00 partly sunny skies. 73 at that hour in philadelphia. allentown, reading,ç 60s for wilmington and millville. the temperatures climb into the low 80s by lunch time today. the clouds thin out, too. still a few scattered clouds north and west. showers should stay way to the north and to the northwest for today. so the forecast for today is calling for another warm one. in fact, a little bit warmer than yesterday. though the humidity is going to stay on the low side. south, southwesterly winds to 12 miles an hour today. heading to the shore, i have your shorecast when i come back. >> 11 minutes after 4:00. time for another check of the traffic. jillian mele is joining us with a look at what is not happening

in some cases. >> it's quiet. we'll take it while we have it. this is a live look at center city philadelphia. a few drivers out there both directions. the entire length of the vine is clear right now. this shot is tough to see. i'll underline what we are looking at right there. that is the tacony-palmyra bridge. traffic is moving along just fine. at some point around 4:30 we are expecting the arms to open for a ship to pass through. that means traffic will be stopped for roughly ten minutes. i'll keep you updated for when that happens. right now, the traffic is moving over the tacony-palmyra bridge. 42 freeway is in the clear. we have that normal overnight construction out there but the average speeds, 55 miles per hour. speeds at 65 on the new jersey turnpike and 60 on 295. chris? >> all right. up next, we have a look at the first ever selfie from mars.

it happened yesterday morning in the parking lot of this supermarket. police say the fun was sitting in her car when a man got in, beat her up, pushed her out and took off with the car. the woman has a broken finger and injuries to her face, no arrests at this point. we have an update for you about a story we told you yesterday morning. there's a new rule that gives children a better shot at donor legs. last year, 11-year-old sarah murnaghan family went to court. they can now be considered for adult lungs. >> do the same thing i did. >> to have made an impact for potentially other kids, there's been one other child who received lungs from a donor over 12 as a result. >> and since sarah's public fight, a dozen kids have asked

to be placed on that adult donor list. a new report from harrisburg details mistakes and delays in the investigation of jerry sandusky. attorney general kathleen kane yesterday said some child sex abuse may have been prevented if prosecutors had acted more quickly. she says there was a three-year lapse between the time the first victim came forward and the filing of charges against the former penn state assistant football coach. kane also said there's no direct evidence that politics played a role in the delay. in los angeles, a judge wants more documents from lawyers for donald sterling. he's opposing the $2 billion sale of his l.a. clippers to former microsoft ceo steve ballmer. sterling's estranged wife is trying to sell the team without his consent. the nba wants the clippers sold because of sterling's racist comments. a baby inside a car when it was stolen from a gas station has been founded alive and well. you see the infant. a jogger found the 8-month-old

yesterday morning. the little girl was strapped in the car seat on the side of the road. her mother tells police she left the baby in the car when she went inside to pay for gas. in south florida, a land escaper was killed when he was dragged through a wood chipper. police near ft. lauderdale say they were clearing brush at the time. investigators are trying to determine if this was a work accident or something more. in virginia, a convicted felon has to undergo a;h+asecty as part of a plea deal to shorten his prison sentence. he was convicted of child endangerment after fathering seven children with six women. a california town is trying to shut down a mobile app called monkey parking. it allows people to auction off public parking spaces to the highest bidder. here's how it work. the app allows drivers parked in

highly traffic areas to put their spots up for auction. they can sell it for 5, 10 or $20 and wait until the buyer arrives to grab the spot before they pull out. city officials call this illegal. >> in fact what they're doing is getting drivers to hold parking spots hostage while somebody else finds the parking spot and replaces them. so patently illegal. >> sounds ingenious, though, doesn't it? the city has given the creators of the app till mid-july to shut down the operation or possibly face a lawsuit. here is proof these days a selfie can come from anywhere and from anyone. even the planet mars. this one was taken by nasa's curiosity rover. there he is. showing off, marking the two-year anniversary of the robot's landing on mars. curiosity is studying the martian terrain, including the possibility that it once hosted earth-type organisms.

your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> the weather will be better here on planet earth, especially in our area today. the humidity is going to stay low. we'll see bright sunshine at times. a few scattered clouds at times as well. beach avenue completely dry. right now cape may is 63 degrees. 88% humidity. that number will drop as the day goes on. the wind right now is calm. boat house row is completely dry as well. we'll see lots of sunshine. again today was in the 80s. yesterday, that's where it will be again today. just a little bit warmer than yesterday. not a huge warmup today. there are scattered clouds moving through overnight. still some in the area and lining up north and west. it won't be completely clear but it will be a pretty nice day. tomorrow, a different story. look at the clouds moving through the midwest. that's a system that is likely going to bring us showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and into tomorrow evening. spending a day along the coast

this morning we're hearing from one of the men aboard that boat there that had the encounter with the great white shark off the jersey shore. we showed you the video yesterday. the 16-foot shark showed up saturday 30 miles off the coast of cape may. the group works aboard -- the group aboard the boat works with the federal government to track sharks. they tell us they've seen great whites before but never this close. >> the only time it really made us nervous at all at the point where it did get ahold of thedc chum bag just because it was directly cleated to the boat. we were worried it would harm the engine. it wasn't actually biting down. i think it was just feeling it. >> the encounter lasted about 20 minutes until the group decided to leave. scientists say after decades of decline, there's been a recent uptick in the number of great whites off the east coast. this morning we've learned that a cash 5 winner in the new jersey lottery is from ocean county or at least the winning ticket was sold in ocean county.

live with details, just ahead. a mascot controversy in bucks county. who will win the name game? we'll take a look. boat house row. warmer today than it was yesterday. humid and rainy weather on the way for tomorrow. 4:30. good morning. this is nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris kato. let's check in with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. >> temperatures have come down into the 60s. they're still falling at this hour, a few spots in the 50s, not center city. that's a live, dry view looking across the delaware. we'll be in the 80s today. mount holly is 60 and 67 in allentown. so a nice mild start and comfortable, too, as the humidity stays low. by 9:00 we'll be up to 73 degrees and at lunch time, a good deal of sunshine to push us into the 80s. and climbing at that hour.
