right now, so we're going to ask her if the match will go on. and we've got matt live in detroit on a big story. he'll be talking live to gm's ceo, mary barra, in just a few minutes. matt, good morning to you. >> hey, savannah and the gang. good morning to all of you. that's right, london yesterday, detroit this morning. we'll sit down with mary barra in a couple minutes. you laid out the issue she's been dealing with since taking over the company well in the open. the issue yesterday, a recall and safety alert for 2013-2014 chevy cruzes. we'll talk to the ceo who's had to answer some difficult questions over the last six months before congress and the public. we're going to ask her how this company got to this position and how she plans to move it forward. >> it's going to be interesting. i read that gm has recalled more cars in 2014 than it's sold since 2009. it's going to be a fascinating interview. >> 20 million. for now, let's get to

today's top story, the world cup fever sweeping this country. the u.s., some say at a disadvantage to dominant germany, but there are still several ways for this team to make it to the next round, and natalie is in brazil this morning. nat, just a few hours to go until the big game, and i know you believe that we can win. >> reporter: hey, good morning, savannah! it's a rainy, soggy day in recess ye recife, but that's not going to rain on the americans' parade, because as you can see, the americans have landed in recife, here by the busloads behind us, all very excited for the big game. some are calling it the david and goliath of the world cup games. but you know what? the americans here are confident, right? we believe that we can win! >> we believe that we will win! we believe that we will win! usa! >> we believe that we will win! >> reporter: american fans fired up as team usa gets ready to face down their toughest opponent yet, germany. >> this is our country's new sport. >> reporter: the american team is going into battle with a lot

of backup. american fans have bought the most game tickets here of any foreign fans. >> great stuff. he scores! the u.s. ahead, incredibly! >> reporter: team usa has held its own in the so-called group of death, beating its nemesis from the past two world cups, ghana. >> what about that? the usa! >> reporter: then, the u.s. were about to beat a heavily favored portugal but had to settle for a tie in the final, heartbreaking seconds. >> oh, it's a great cross, and it is an equalizer! >> reporter: so, this is what the u.s. has to do. they move on with a win or a tie against germany. if they lose today, the u.s. will still advance if portugal and ghana tie. and even if the u.s. loses and the other game doesn't end in a tie, the americans can march on depending upon how many goals the teams score in both games.

>> coach jurgen klinsmann -- >> reporter: u.s. coach jurgen klinsmann wants his team to determine their own fate. >> they did it against ghana, they did it against portugal, and i want them to do the same against germany. just, you know, give everything you have, give the extra mile. we are very well capable to beat germany. >> reporter: and the players have been inspired by the support of the fans. >> right now with this tournament, the country is in a soccer fever, and they're glued to the tvs when we play, and it's reaching new levels in the united states. >> reporter: so, rain and the drainage of the field could be issues that the american team will be contending with today, but todd, what do you make of the forecast? >> it looks cloudy with a chance of german tears. >> reporter: we'll look for that forecast and hope for the best. savannah?

>> al, how are you going to top that forecast? >> i can't. >> game over. >> just put him in this chair right now. here's the latest. right now it's 73 degrees, as you can see, raining heavily, humidity at 100%. the forecast at noontime, well, what we've got, it's not great. it's about 82 degrees, 90% chance of heavy rain, winds out of the southeast at 10. they generally will not cancel a game because of weather, but guys, it's up to the referee to determine the condition of the field, and that field is known for very poor drainage. so, if there's a lot of rain and the field conditions are very poor, they may postpone this game. >> yeah, well, and it's dangerous, too, to play in this. >> absolutely, for players and even for spectatorspectators. folks are having trouble getting to the game. roads are flooded out around the stadium. >> slow the game down and tie, we'll settle for that. >> we'll take it. >> we believe that it will rain. all right, al, thank you so much. by the way, now to the flooding emergency happening in this country, in the midwest. a record amount of rainfall

causing huge problems for people who live along the mississippi river. and the worst may still be yet to come. let's get right to nbc's john yang along the river in st. paul this morning. john, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this morning the river has just passed the 20-foot mark. that's the highest it's been in almost 15 years, and it's still rising. and the current is so strong, the water moving so fast and so much debris being swept down the river that barge traffic has come to a virtual halt. minnesota's known as the land of 10,000 lakes, and these days, it seems like all of them are overflowing. and rivers, too. in delano, the waters of the crow river have been an unwelcomed visitor. >> you get a little flooding in the spring, but this is unbelievable right here. >> reporter: other parts of the country are inundated with rain, too, like arlington, texas. fast-moving, heavy storms triggered flash floods that

forced the theme park six flags over texas and hurricane harbor to shut down. in minnesota, the twin cities is having its wettest june on record, nearly 11 inches of rain so far. through the first half of the year, more than 25 inches, nearly 80% the average for a full year. >> this is not good. we're a tough people. we can handle it. >> reporter: across the state, damage is being measured in the millions of dollars. hundreds of acres of crops are under water. >> the farm impact is horrific. >> reporter: even some of life's most important moments have been disrupted. 35 counties have declared emergencies. thousands of people have been driven from their homes. even in the evacuation, minnesota nice prevails. >> all these trailers and people showed up all of a sudden. like, we had two hours to evacuate. and we got done in less than an hour and a half. it's, like, amazing. >> reporter: and all this

water's not going anywhere soon. forecasters expect the river to crest and then start receding later this evening, but they still expect it to be above flood stage until well after july 4th. savannah? >> tough times there. john yang, thank you. we have new details this morning in the search for that missing malaysia airlines flight. officials now saying the plane was very likely on autopilot when it crashed into the indian ocean. let's get to nbc's tom costello. he has been on the story since the start. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, savannah. investigators who are mapping out the likely path of malaysia 370 say all the evidence points to the plane being on autopilot and that it likely crashed into a remote section of the indian ocean when it ran out of fuel, probably hundreds of miles from where they've been looking. they're going to now refocus their efforts along an area called the 7th arc, which they've drawn based on the plane's last satellite contact with that inmarsat orbiting satellite. they think the plane is within 23 miles to the west and 35 miles to the east of the arc.

now they say it's likely the plane was on autopilot the entire time it was flying over the ocean, because the data suggests it appears to have been such a straight path. here's the australian deputy prime minister today. >> it is highly, highly likely that the aircraft was on autopilot. otherwise, it could not have followed the ordinary path that has been identified through the satellite sightings. >> reporter: what no one knows is why the plane would have been on autopilot. most experts believe this must have been done intentionally, but the reasons are not at all clear. meanwhile, search teams now focusing on this new search zone several hundred miles southwest of the last area they searched, which is still 1,100 to 1,200 miles off australia. they'll map the underwater terrain and then begin a search that they say could take 12 months or more. we're talking about area that is 20,000 to 25,000 square miles of underwater search area.

savannah, back to you. >> tom costello, thank you. we turn to peter alexander, in for natalie this morning. quite a scare at a concert last night. >> this happened in boston. here's what we know. police are investigating whether drugs played a role after about three dozen concert-goers were rushed to hospitals or treated at the td garden arena wednesday night in boston. the show headlined by superstar swedish deejay avice attracted a very young crowd. health officials say those overcome suffered from dehydration that could have been caused by a combination of alcohol, they say, extreme heat in the boston area, and very possibly illegal drugs. a major ruling by the u.s. supreme court on wednesday. police officers must first get a search warrant before searching your cell phone. that decision was unanimous. justices ruled that smartphones have so much information on them that they are different than everything else we carry. so, the high court ruled police cannot look through a smartphone's call records, e-mails, texts, even photos, without first getting a

judge-issued search warrant. police can still take the phone and turn it off. a dramatic scene plays out in a southern california intersection when a family gets caught in the middle of a shoot-out between police and an armed suspect. take a look at this. [ shots ] >> don't move. just don't move. just don't move. >> why are they shooting? >> i don't know, james. just lay down. lay down on the seat. >> you can hear the boy asking why are they shooting. in the video, chris miller tried to keep his pregnant wife and son calm. officials say a gunman exchanged fire with police. the suspect was hit, ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. fortunately, nobody else was hurt. >> don't move. and in this day in age of facebook and instagram, never a bad time for a good photo op, you'd think, but ask this senior couple what they were thinking in bellaire, california, just minutes after a noninjury rollover accident, the couple was posing for pictures. you can see the driver there standing by his honda, of course, but his wife, she's still trapped inside and the man climbing in to help her out,

well, he's in the shot, too. at one point, the woman apparently asked her husband for her purse so she could get her camera and so they could take some photos. that is the ultimate selfie, i suspect. >> their christmas card. glad they're okay, though. >> they are okay. 7:13 now. >> on the weekend that's how i wear my pants, bring them right up here. >> true. real comfortable, right? >> yeah. >> you know what? comfort's the most important thing. >> tell me about it. >> i know you know that, savannah. we are looking at some more severe weather out through the plains again. jet stream is coming out of the pacific, and it is going to make its way up and into canada, and that's going to intensify the upper level low pressures that are developing and spreading heavy showers and thunderstorms from the dakotas, montana, on into the central plains and parts of the rockies. so, we are looking today at a severe risk. we're talking supercells, winds possible, hail from billings all the way down into northern

texas. but it continues again into tomorrow, from the dakotas down into oklahoma. we could be looking at the possibility of tornadoes developing a little more strongly. and by saturday, tornadoes will be more than likely from fargo, minneapolis, all the way down to wichita. flooding will be an issue as well. as you look at the rainfall amounts, some areas picking up anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain locally in the central plains we could see up to 5 inches over the next 72 hours. we're going to get to your local inches over the next 72 hours. we're going to get to your local forecast ♪ ♪ ♪ [ male announcer ] if you can't stand the heat, get off the test track. get the mercedes-benz you've been burning for at the summer event, going on now at your authorized mercedes-benz dealer. hurry, before this opportunity cools off. ♪

good morning. i'm meteorologist bill henley. a steamy start and a warm if not hot afternoon. temperatures near 90 today with an isolated shower possible later today but not tomorrow. the clouds will be moving out, partly to mostly sunny skies, less humid conditions for friday and the weekend. sun? skies, saturday and sunday. morning temperatures will be in the extincts. highs in the 80s. a bit warmer on monday with sunshine. here comes the heat, humidity, and chance of showers starting tuesday. have a great day. let's go back to matt in detroit. hey, matt. >> hey, savannah. good morning to you. i'm here in detroit, the headquarters of general motors, to sit down and talk to the ceo of this company, mary barra. we'll talk with her in just a moment. we're here a day after this company sent notifications to its dealers in north america to stop selling and delivering 2013 and 2014 chevy cruze sedans

because of a possible problem with the airbags in those cars. it's just the latest in a very long list of recalls this company has been through over the past six months. we'll talk to mary barra in a second, but first, here's nbc's kevin tibbles. >> reporter: general motors is in mary barra's blood. she got her start more than 30 years ago working the assembly line. just six months ago, the mother of two became the first female ceo in the auto giant's history. she was immediately thrust into the hot seat. handling a series of massive, high-profile recalls on millions of vehicles for defects going back more than a decade. the airbag problems that have put a halt to the sale of the new chevy cruze are just the latest. barra addressed her employees earlier this month. >> we failed these customers, and we must face up to it and we must learn from it.

>> reporter: an internal investigation cleared barra and other senior managers of covering up problems that are being blamed for more than a dozen deaths. >> general motors has a culture of secrecy and of avoiding responsibility, and mary barra apparently did not know about this terrible safety defect, but she should have known. >> reporter: the bottom line clearly shows mary barra as ceo has the pedal to the metal. gm's sales in may skyrocketed 13%. is this all positive news for mary barra? >> she's in a situation where she has to keep the company running and on solid ground, but at the same time deal with -- this is a crisis. >> reporter: this new ceo's real challenge, some say, is insuring gm not only sells cars, but changes its culture from within. for "today," kevin tibbles, nbc news, chicago. >> and mary barra joins us now exclusively. ms. barra, nice to see you.

good morning. >> good to see you. >> are you done with recalls? i mean, this has been a long line of recalls, 20 million cars in the last year or so. are you done? >> we're going to continue to look at the data that we get and we're going to take the action that we need. that's our commitment to customers. if we find an issue, we're going to deal with it. >> so, it's possible we could be hearing more recalls down the road? >> it's possible. >> since this story broke six months or so ago, you've answered difficult questions, you've gone before congress, you've seen the headlines. you fired 15 people. they don't work here anymore because of their involvement in that situation. have you fired everyone you're going to fire in connection with this situation? >> yes, i believe we have. you know, the investigation that was done independently was exhaustive. it went to all areas. and you know, there were people in five different functions, across all levels of the company. and i do believe associated with this situation, we have addressed the issue. >> i think a lot of people wonder, does this go beyond bad communication, mismanagement, bad decision-making within the

company? was something criminal going on inside general motors? you say you've looked at this exhaustively. do you think anyone acted in a criminal way in dealing with these ignition switches? >> you know, clearly, this issue took too long to find it, and in this case, we failed our customers. we failed them with these vehicles. again, you know, the criminal aspect of it, i think that's for the courts to decide. i can tell you i've taken action, and the people i don't think should be a part of the company aren't here anymore. >> would you be surprised if criminal charges were filed against anyone who worked for general motors while this was all going on? >> again, that i think is for the courts to decide. i don't think it's right for me to speculate on that, but, you know, clearly, there were mistakes made and we're dealing with the situation. >> was there a cover-up? clearly, a lot of people within this company knew at separate times, it seems, and in different locations, that there was a problem with these ignition switches. and still, as you just mentioned, the company was extremely slow to deal with it. is that because there was a cover-up? >> i don't really think there was a cover-up.

i think what we had, and it was covered in the report there were silos of information, so people had bits and pieces and then didn't come forward with information or didn't act with a sense of urgency, and it's simply unacceptable. >> did money play a role, ms. barra? the company was trying to digits way out of bankruptcy. cost cutting was essential. did someone say, hey, it's expensive to recall and fix all those cars? i think $1.7 billion has been set aside. let's see if we can avoid recalling those cars? >> absolutely not. during that same period of time and leading up to when we went through the bankruptcy and restructuring, there were many recalls made, so those decisions were being made. the problem with this is people didn't understand the safety aspects of it, and that, too, we've made substantial changes so that will never happen again. >> you had to sit down and talk to family members of people who died in crashes related to those faulty ignition switches. as a new ceo, as a mom, what was that like? >> it was incredibly difficult to know that mistakes were made that caused people to lose loved

ones or to have serious physical injury. if i could turn back the clock, i would, but i can't. so, what i want to do is make sure we create the right systems and processes and have the right people that this never happens again, because it was unacceptable. >> i don't want to make this about you, but at in time during those meetings with those loved ones, did you stop and think, why did i get this job? >> you know, through tough periods of time, and general motors has had tough periods in the past, i know the men and women of general motors, the vast majority come to work every day, they do their best. and so, as difficult as it is, i'm more committed than ever to make sure we make this company what i know it can be. >> you said something recently that i don't think a lot of ceos would say. you said you don't want to put this episode behind you at this company. you want it to forever be a part of the collective memory here at general motors. and i'm going to ask you to explain why when you join us in our next half hour to continue this conversation. thanks very much.

good to see you. >> good morning, savannah. yes, it is very bizarre. officers discovered charlie bothuell while serving a search warrant on the home as part of the investigation into his disappearance. now, police say it's not clear if the boy had been there the entire time, but his father first learned the news during a tv interview. >> charlie bothuell. charlie, we are getting reports that your son has been found in your basement. sir? mr. bothuell, are you -- >> what? >> reporter: that was the reaction from charles bothuell, given the news during an interview with nancy grace that his son was not only found alive after 11 days, but discovered in the basement of his detroit home. >> how could your son be alive in your basement? [ bleep ]

>> i have -- i have no idea. >> sir, did you check your basement? >> i checked my basement, the fbi checked my basement, the detroit police checked my basement, my wife checked my basement. i've been down there several times. we've all been checking. >> reporter: police confirmed that officers had been inside the bothuell home with cadaver dogs searching the house extensively. >> so, we're not certain that charlie was here during those visits, not certain at all, because the question i would ask, how could we miss? >> reporter: police went back to the home wednesday to serve a search warrant after they found traces of blood and a pipe in the house. authorities saying that evidence could have led to a possible homicide investigation, but instead, they found the young boy alive. >> he was nervous but excited and glad to see the police. >> so, now that they've found the boy, the search for answers really gets under way. savannah? >> i hope it does.

all right, we're back with the nearly $800,000 fine that whole foods will pay for overcharging customers at several of its stores. nbc's joe fryer has more. >> reporter: the prices at whole foods tend to get a lot of attention. >> i think you get what you pay for. >> reporter: but now the grocery chain is paying an $800,000 settlement for overcharging customers in california. >> by coming to whole foods, we

should have our whole trust with them, and this takes away from that. >> reporter: investigators say some of the problems centered around the hot food bar and salad bar, stuff that needs to be weighed. they say sometimes whole foods did not subtract the weight of the container, so customers paid too much. >> while the prices for these items at whole foods are not cheap to begin with, and it's very important that consumers not have to pay extra for cardboard, plastic and other packaging items. >> reporter: in a statement, whole foods says its pricing is accurate 98% of the time, adding "while we realize that human error is always possible, we will continue to refine and implement additional processes to minimize such errors going forward." consumer reports says readers give whole foods high scores for almost everything, except they feel prices there in general are too high. >> so, couple that with this situation, this embarrassing situation where they were overcharging customers. it really is a tremendous black eye for this company. >> reporter: other supermarkets have faced similar overcharging

spots. one is weight, the scale. make sure that things weigh and the price per pound makes sense. two the sticker price. you know this, where you see the sticker price and the price on the shelf. they may not match up at the register. also, three, produce. the wrong codes put in at produce. so, some of these are mistakes. some of this is not a mistake, it's on purpose, but it's up to you to be vigilant. >> be vigilant or watch them like a hawk. >> yes. >> practically speaking, what are the options if you see an overcharge? you're supposed to confront the cashier? >> yes, that's exactly what you're supposed to do. >> that's what carmen would do. >> here's the thing, does it make sense for you? if you're at the cash register and you put up a huge pile of grocery and you're trying to unload and scan, scan, scan. make sure you pay attention when it comes to the produce and things that are by weight, if that's what you can do. ask the cashier if something is unmarked. if they don't take care of it, go to the manager. they'll honor the price. and things do add up. if this happens repeatedly, you

times magazine." we wanted to know more about it, so we sent nbc's jenna wolfe, who that's a 10-month-old, to find out more. she's with us this morning. hey, good morning. >> carson, good morning. i was anxious to hear all about this. it's a program called isr, infant swimming resource. and when you hear the frightening statistics involving child drownings, you'll understand why nearly 300,000 babies have been taught this self-rescue technique. this is 13-month-old miles. most of us would panic to see him fall in the water. that's because the statistics are alarming. drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children 1 to 3 years of age in 30 states. but miles is going to be fine. educational videos like this one have gone viral. babies of various ages falling in water, flipping over and floating. it's a type of swim instruction called isr, infant swimming resource, a structured lesson plan for children ages 6 months to 6 years old.

for many parents, the idea of submerging their infants in water is terrifying. in fact, the american academy of pediatrics says children are not developmentally ready for swimming lessons until after their 4th birthday. but joanne barnett, the ceo of isr, believes her program is successful and necessary. >> very nice. >> reporter: this is 7-month-old emma. it's her very first lesson. her mom, caroline, sits poolside watching but can't interfere with the lesson plan. >> i want her to learn that the water will float her, because when she assumes the correct posture, the water will float her. >> okay. >> and i also want her to know that she can trust me. >> mom, does that make you nervous at all that she went under? >> a little. >> reporter: but she'll be back for ten minutes a day, five days a week for six weeks. why only ten minutes? to avoid stress, chills and fear and to achieve this goal, a positive attitude towards water.

this is 7-month-old quinn's last day of instruction. >> her parents have a pool. we're there all the time and god forbid something happens where he walks out back and decides to jump in. so, we thought it would be a good investment. >> reporter: quinn's dad hasn't seen him in the water since the very first lesson. >> there you go. very, very nice work. all done. >> i think he wants to give you a hug. >> reporter: and a sense of relief. >> you know what that is? that's pride. he's proud of you. >> the instinct is to go help. it's like, you can't go, then he just does it and it blows your mind. >> these skills should never, ever be a substitute for adult supervision. sensors around the pool, alarms on the gate. a child has no business in the water alone or around the water. >> reporter: for these parents, this class provides two solutions -- pool safety and peace of mind. now, i've taken my 10-month-old,

create a budget. the first tip is put it in writing, right? >> yes, write it down. i don't care where you write it down, a yellow pad, an excel sheet, a word document, it doesn't matter, but write it down, because when it's in writing, you're more likely to stick to it. >> and write it down in categories and determine a value for each one. you have some suggestions. >> yes. percentages, exactly. so, i want you to do a zero base budget. that's income minus expenses equals zero, so every dollar is assigned to a category. that way, if you do $20 for coffee during the week, you can go and enjoy your coffee and you don't have to worry about it and have the shame or guilt of oh, i feel bad spending this. it's categorized out. >> for housing, you recommend 25% to 30% of your income. >> exactly right. these are basic percentages. with this, i really want to stress, this is not black-and-white. this can vary depending on the family, depending on the situation, because some people will have six kids, you know, and these statistics will vary, or if it's a newlywed couple, it may look different. >> and you say change this,
