but if you ask our daughters i'm not sure they will say i've been a good mom. i'm not sure. i miss most class things. my daughter would list all the mothers that were there, and you were not there, mom. first few times i would die with guilt. but i developed coping mechanisms. i called the school and said, give me a list of mothers who were not there. when she came home in the evening she'd say, you were not there, you were not there. i said, ah-ha, mrs. so-and-so wasn't there, i'm not the only bad mother. >> she's very loveable, by the way. >> doesn't she? >> i remember when the american cancer society, every year they honor a different person, mother of the year. many, many years ago they honored me. it was great. but my kids when i told them they go, why? why you? you know. i mean, it's your mom, you know? >> isn't it an interesting discussion, especially women trying to juggle and balance. every woman is different. i think it's what are your

priorities? i've always felt, you know -- so grateful that i had the kind of job. and that's part of it. i think a woman can have it all but she can't have it all alone. >> right. >> she's got to have a good partner that helps her. she has to have good help that can help her. she has to have, you know, a relationship with god, i believe, to keep it all organized and keep your priorities, keep yourself grounded, you know? >> yeah. >> i'm just grateful because i'm at a -- i've always felt like it's possible. but you always have to have an attitude of, your willingness to sacrifice your own desires on occasion. remember the time i told you that i was -- i was so excited to be asked to be -- >> yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> to be in victoria. i like my watermelon so much. they asked me to take over for her one day. and i -- all my dream at that time had been, i want to do broadway, i want to do broadway. cassidy was 1 year old. i remember saying, thank you so much but my daughter's 1. she'll never be 1 again. broadway will always be there. that was a sacrifice at the time. you know what she said to me? she said, kathy, i remember when i had to make decisions like that as well and you'll never regret putting your children first. but you'll always regret when you don't. >> put your work first. >> i thought it was wise of her. >> i think you're right. if you have choices it's easier. i think a lot of moms out there trying to juggle, dropping the kid off at day care, coming back, feeling guilty, they're working on all cylinders and they don't have -- they don't have a way to have other people help them. they're kind of on their own. i think what's interesting, too we keep talking about helicopter parents who are there for everything. i think a lot of other mothers who are doing a fine job feel

terrible because the other parents are overdoing it. >> great point. >> and they feel terrible. >> that is a great point. when i was growing up -- probably with you too -- my mother and father never came once to school. >> ever. i don't remember -- i would panic if my parties showed up at my school. >> all of a sudden a cull of generations later, you're a terrible mother if you're not there every day. if i couldn't be lunch mother one week i said, is anybody going to die because i'm not lunch mother? i don't think so. >> you know what i'm waiting for? the pendulum began with us, parents didn't show up at anything. now the pendulum's here. bring it back into the middle already it belongs. >> something that makes sense, he's. >> we love william and kate no matter what they do but there's nothing that's better than a natural reaction. when andy murray got beaten at wimbledon, look at their faces. first of all, look at how reserved the others look. oh, terrible. look at kate and william in the front. >> devastated!

i set out to do 49 new things for the first time before i turned 50. some of them were thrill seeking, others were doing things i always wanted to try, some of them were simply the idea of facing my fears, doing something that makes me uncomfortable. >> how did that feel? truthful truthfully, i learned that education is power. >> yeah. >> knowledge. >> when you learn things it is the most powerful experience. so i spent the day with a herpetologist, which is a snake expert, at the phoenix herpetological society. >> that's a mouthful. >> when the snake's sticking its tongue on the, it's smelling you and sizing you up so it can't go bite you. >> let's talk about other things you did. you made a dirty martini. >> that's my drink. kathie lee, as i shared with you, it's dinner and a drink in one. blue cheese stuffed olives. you're 50 years old, you should know how to make a dirty martini. >> you went to bar tending school. >> everything i did is something every person can go do. it's not a special thing.
