nbc 10 news starts now. summerç storms, it will be morning of assessing damage and cleaning up after powerful storms rolled through overnight, bringing down a lot of trees. power lines, tens of thousands of you will start your day without electricity. a live look now at a quiet cape may where the storms have moved out. 71 degrees. there's another chance later today for another round of storms and another hot day on tap, too. good morning, everyone, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. we have leave team coverage of the storm's aftermath. jesse gary is checking on cleanup this morning and meteorologist bill henley is tracking the possibility of more thunderstorms later today.

let's start with you, bill. >> we saw wind gusts of more than 60 miles an hour, the storms passing through last night. there's a possibility of strong thunderstorms, especially this afternoon. scattered clouds, still showers tracking through delaware and heading towards south jersey even at this hour. dover is seeing light rainfall but there's one area of heavier rainfall that's just pushing into delaware bay, moving into cumberland county in the next few minutes. otherwise it will be a waiting game for more storms this afternoon. showers in west virginia as part of what's going to be firing up here this afternoon. 72 degrees right now in philadelphia, 60s, cooler than it was yesterday morning. we'll start on the muggy side, 76 degrees with clouds thinning out by 9:00. 80 and then a chance of showers wille increasing later this morning and this afternoon, especially in delaware and south jersey. neighborhood by neighborhood, hour by hour with the future weather when i come back. first, jesse gary is live in wayne this morning.

good morning, jesse. >> good morning to you. we've moved over to bryn mawr, hard to tell, wayne or bryn mawr because of the power outage. i'll move out of the way. we're standing on lancaster. that is rosemont. if you come back this why, it's summit grove. it's dark this entire stretch of the main line here in bryn mawr. this is all a result of the storms that swept through overnight. as a matter of fact, we have video from damage over in radner township, aç tree came crashin through bill conway's home just as he was sitting down to eat dinner with his family. >> the chickny bricks started falling like rain. and we look outside, that's what we saw. it was quite impressive. >> reporter: quite dangerous as well. it's going to take quite a bit of money to prepare the damage. he promises that's what he's going to do. you just saw one of the lower

marion patrol cars pass by. they are patrolling the business district because there are no lights. live in brymawr, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. a lot of people still without power this morning. in pennsylvania, 130,000, new jeey, 21200,000 and delaware about 1,800. the storms are being at lea destroying four homes. madison county officials say the hardest hit communities with smithfield, in between syracuse and utica. the national weather service will be in that area to determine if a tornado caused the damage. this is veo in fro the town

>> whenever you see a traffic signal that is not working, treat it as a four-way stop. you'll see that across the area this morning, including at kelly drive at sedgley drive. the storm didn't really have an impact on the highways. broad street, 95 is clear right now the entire length of the way. the bridges are looking great as well. this is a live look at the ben franklin bridge. the view from camden. all of the area bridges are in the clear as well. chris? >> now to the aftermath of row home fire that killed four children in philadelphia on saturday. today the liberian ambassador to the u.s. will meet with mayor michael nutter and city council members. nbc 10's tracy davidson is live in our digital operation center for us. that ambassador has met with the family members grieving those four children. >> right, chris. met with the family members, also has met with the neighbors who are concerned about what they called a slow response time

by the fire department. more on that in a moment. .ambassador says his immediate concern is getting help to those displaced by the fire. yesterday, the ambassador spoke with the families behind closed doors and then addressed the community. he toured the airy at 65th and gesner in southwest philadelphia where twin sisters, a young boy and his baby brother all died in a saturday morning fire. more than 40 people were burned out of their homes. he's on a mission to it be a voice for that liberian community and get answers to important questions. >> what was the cause? how did it happen? how can we move from this place forward. >> reporter: also family members embraced a recovering fire victim, just steps from where a protest to the fire department's response time took place on monday. philadelphia police released 911 calls from a deadly fire. listen to a clip from one of the calls made by a neighbor.

>> four houses on fire. >> four houses? >> four houses on fire. >> according to all of those recordings, derrick sawyer said it took about one minute for firefighters to show up on the scene after being dispatched by 911 operators. some maybes criticized the fire department claiming its response time was slow. but one maybe told us it was such a fast-moving fire, the response time may not have made a difference. live in the death tall operation center, tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. we are following breaking news from overseas right now. there are reports on social media, we are working to verify those that a flight in europe had to make an emergency landing in paris after an engine caught fire in light. it appears that the plane landed safely. we'll continue to follow this story and check in with news sources overseas to get those reports verified and bring you more information as we get it. now we go to this developing story overseas.

another day of violence, israel launched its largest offensive against militants in gaza, killing at least 25 people. more than 150 targets were hit. palestinians report that eight of those killed in gaza are children. israel says this is in response to gaza's continued rocket attacks including one fired over a wedding in israel. that rocket was knocked down by an israeli missile. the israeli government says it is ready for a possible ground invasion of gaza. meantime, palestinians in the west bank clashed with israeli forces overnight. the protest here was men the to show solidarity with palestinians in gaza. tensions of course have been high since palestinians kidnapped and killed three israeli teens. that was followed by last week's killing of a palestinian team. today in dallas, president obama is scheduled to meet with texas governor rick perry on the immigration crisis. he'll discuss how to deal with the flood of immigrants coming from central america crossing

from central america into theç u.s. yesterday, the president asked congress for $3.7 billion for house and caring for those children and increased surveillance at the border. now on to the philadelphia school budget crisis. there is a setback, again, in getting funding from that cigarette tax. the state senate has amended the tax again, that means it has to go back to the house for more discussion. but their next scheduled session isn't until mid-september. mayor michael nutter says he doesn't think city schools will open on time without that tax revenue. from our jersey shore bureau, the parent company of atlantic city showboat hotel says it will consider selling if they get a reasonable offer. caesar's entertainment says it also needs to determine if a potential buyer could be license the by the state. the showboat is slated to close august 31st, leaving 2,000 people out of work. those workers will protest

tonight. watch this video as the mayor, staff and firefighters walked out of a public safety meeting monday night. they said they were upset that the fire chief wasn't given a chance to speak about potential budget cuts and changes. the chief believes the councilman who's running the meeting has a grudge against him, something that councilman has denied. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> a stormy day yesterday. we're still tracking showers at this hour, but no severe weather in the area. and severe weather much less likely today. thunderstorms could produce gusty winds this afternoon. and in between, we'll get sunshine but it's not going to be as hot as the middle 90s we saw yesterday afternoon. 65 degrees in doylestown. clouds are scattered over philadelphia and cape may. temperatures are holding in the low 70s. right now it is d on beach avenue. showers are not that far away. there's a possibility we'll see a few scattered showers to start

with. as far as gusty winds are concerned, not too bad. 12 mile-an-hour winds in philadelphia and much lighter in delaware and south jersey. they could be in for strong, gusty winds with thunderstorm development this afternoon. this çmorning, clouds are parked, delaware, south jersey with a few scattered showers. the future weather shows the chance of showers will be returning later this morning, to start with, 76 in philadelphia, by 9:00, 10:00, the temperature warming considerably. 84 degrees in philadelphia and look what we have, the showers coming back into delaware and south jersey. that's at least to start with. later in the day as temperatures heat up we could see thunderstorm development, even areas north and west. the extended future weather when i come back with when the storms will finally take a break. 11 minutes after 4:00. we told you moments ago because of last night's storms you'll see traffic signals across the

morning. a firefighter is recovering from a minor injury after battling this house fire last night. quarry lane on lafayette hill. there are reports that a propane tank exfloweded in the backyard. firefighters have not determined an official cause. haddon township police are looking for this woman in these surveillance photos. police say she stole ensure nutritional shakes. her suv hit the store manager who was trying to get her tag number. investigators are looking for a 2000 silver mercury mountaineer. you see it in the photo there. we're learning more about the woman who's accused of abandoning her baby at a new york city subway station. 20-year-old frankia dapp, she said she thought she was leaving her in a safe place. they skipped a court date in

north carolina where she's facing assault and prostitution related charges. police say they identified her after someone recognized her on this security video. she's charged with abandoning a child and is being held without bail. the baby is being cared for by the city's administration for children services. police in western connecticut have not said if they'll file criminal charges in the case of a 15-month-old boy who died after being left in a hot car. temperatures approached 09 kreez on monday in connecticut when that toddler was found dead. police have not released the child's name or the official cause of his death. the head of the california highway patrol now calls a viral video of an officer punching a woman he had on the side of the road there shocking.3(p(t&háx during a meeting with community leaders and activists, that official vowed a speedy investigation into the incident. he still will not release the name of that officer. >> they have an obligation to the commune to the release his name. we want to know does he have a history of past abuse? we can't know that unless we know his name and his prior work

record. >> now, the officer seen in the video again is on desk duty for now. the attorney for the victim says she's still being cared for by a doctor. activists called for a federal investigation into that beating that happened on july 1st. in the v.a. scandal retaliation against whistle blowers, that's what federal investigators have testified about during a house subcommittee hearing on the scandal last night. 25 claims have been filed since june, alleging that v.a. supervisors went after dozens of employees who filed complaints. other testimony focused on examples of patient neglect indicating the scandal is more than a waiting list problem. the fbi and the centers for disease control are investigating the discovery of decades old vials of smallpox. those were found at a government research center near washington by a scientist who was cleaning out an old storage room. he found those vials packed in a cardboard box. the six glass vials were sealed and intact. the vials were transferred to a

cdc facility to be tested to see if the virus is still alive. a man who was visiting his son in a chicago jail ended up getting trapped there over the entire fourth of july weekend. he went in to a room where the door was propped open and then it became unpropped, locking him inside for 30 hours. he ended up breaking a sprinkler head to get someone's attention. that will do it. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds overhead are starting to break. we'll get sunshine during the day today but we'll watch the skies for showers and thunderstorms and potentially strong, gusty winds. right now no gusts in the city. the winds are out of the southwest at 11 miles an hour. temperatures in the low 70s. a little bit cooler than yesterday. overall it's going to be a cooler day. this is a live view from the comcast center in center city. no storms in the area, inç the immediate philadelphia area. we are tracking some wet weather through south jersey and

delaware, too. it's moving into the atlantic city area and heavier downpours have popped up in southwestern kent county in delaware. those are also moving towards new jersey. to start with, a new scattered showers after sunshine. wet weather to the west, that is a possibility again for us today. in fact, future weather shows noontime showers once again in delaware and south jersey, those will move offshore. and then this afternoon, north and west we'll see showers and possibly thunderstorms fire up during the 3:00 hour. there's a potential for thunderstorms in delaware and south jersey, too. with those storms we could see gusty winds. maybe not to the levels we had yesterday but there's a possibility of additional damage later today. for today, you will see in between the storms and the showers we'll get sunshine and a warmup, too. not as hot as yesterday. the upper 80s to near 90 degrees this afternoon. but keep an eye on the sky, especially this afternoon for more thunderstorms rolling through the area.

we're keepingur eyes on the roads this morning where traffic signals are out because of last night's storms. jillian mele has what else we should look out for. >> we have a serious accident out of abington township, montgomery county. a vehicle into a pole, old york road at guernsey avenue. take highland avenue if you want to avoid it. expect to see that official activity out there. you could see a delay as drivers pass that scen out in chester county, some of the cameras don't have power because of the power outages we're seeing this morning. this is a live look at route 202. right at route 252. the highways are clear right now. the problem is expect to see downed trees, debris out there, downed poles on some ofour side streets and neighborhood roads. the highways themselves are looking good. if you make it on to a highway, you are clear. the vine street expressway, it's quiet in both directions.

right now we're going to breaking news happening right now in afghanistan. there are reports that coordinated attacks are occurring at a police station and a governor's compound in kandahar. a group of militants detonated car bombs at each of those locations and there's heavy gunfire taking place there as well. a police checkpoint is also under attack.
