hours. and out of all 250 guests on the show's history, viewers picked williams as their favorite. james lipton is the host. it's good to see you. >> good morning. >> his wife said let's not focus on his death. let's focus on the fact he brought laughter to millions of people. let's start there. what was his gift? >> his gift was the most mysterious of all gifts. it was genius. genius is inexplicable. geniuses can do things we have to learn how to do. it's in their bones. they're born with it. you can't teach genius. >> you are a student of cinema. you're a student of actors. but you're an interviewer as well. we have an expression here. when somebody comes to the show and we're interviewing them, some guests bring something to the party. he brought something to the party. >> when he was on inside the actors studio, i introduced him to our students.
7:07 am
and he took off. it was six minutes before i could ask the first question. i'm sure you understand that. >> i do. >> six minutes before i could raise my hand and he said, yes, i said may i can ask a question. >> over the course of an interview you'd find yourself interviewing ten different characters. >> we talked about aladdin, the genie he played. i went through the characters he did. can you guess how many characters he did in two and a half minutes? 52. 52 separate characters. >> you mentioned genius, james. what allowed him to break away from the comedic roles and touch us so deeply with the dramatic roles? >> because he was a wonderful actor. great actors have to be comedians. he reaches deep into his soul
7:08 am
and bring out something, a total surprise we can't predict but which is inevitable. inevitable. he could do that. he could do that as a comedian and actor. when he reaches in and brings that out to us, it is unique. it's something we've never seen or heard before. it's totally his. and that is the definition of a great actor. >> i often wondered what it must have been like to be a director directing robin williams. the script must have become a guideline. >> five words for the director. get out of my way. >> he thrived on the audience. you talked about how he walked out on inside the actors studio and he reacted to the emotion he got from the crowd. i would notice here when he would get laughs from the crew members he was off and running. i just hope he's hearing the applause now and the reaction to his life. >> well, you know what he said when i asked him if heaven exists and what god would say at
7:09 am
the pearly gates. i have a suspicion that god is laughing now. >> james lipton, thanks for sharing your thoughts. >> thank you. >> let's go over to natalie. in the announcement of robin williams' death, his publicist said williams had been battling severe depression. he also fought addiction. dr. nancy snyderman, good morning. >> good morning. >> you hear the word depression and it's such a puzzle. here's the guy who was always the life of the party. he experienced such highs, but he also apparently experienced such lows as well. >> i think for those of us who followed him for so long, that sort of bipolar aspect of him, that manic genius and the lows of the lows really sort of defines mental illness in a way we are reluctant to talk about. today we are talking about mental illness the way we talked about breast cancer years ago. there's still a hush hush.
7:10 am
why can't we talk about mental illness the way we talk about cancer? we aren't quite there yet. and yet when we have heath ledger dying, robin williams dying. these brilliant flameouts of extraordinary talents. we talk about it for a short period of time and then we shove it away. hopefully this is the turning point we really talk about mental illness in a different way. >> you didn't hear him talk necessarily about depression, but he did talk openly about his troubles with addiction. how are those linked? >> well, so many times people are struggling with mental illness, they self-medicate. the problem with if you just take bipolar, that manic genius of the high high is the brilliance of the performance but the low lows are so devastating many times people segregate themselves from society and family. but when you treat the depression, you dull the mania.
7:11 am
and a lot of times you dull the talent. sometimes a lot of people don't like that. they feel their comedic genius disappear. this can be a tough one. they try to self-medicate. in this case, alcohol, cocaine, you name it. but those end up being sort of lousy ways to cope. but they're a person's attempt to not rob the true spirit of the genius. >> he brought us such joy. it's sad in his own life he couldn't find that. >> and for every parent out there who has a child who suffers from depression or bipolar disease, they don't want this finality to it. so hopefully this is an opportunity to start talking. >> it needs to start a national conversation once again. thank you so much. back over to you, matt. >> thank you very much. a lot of people as you mentioned earlier tweeting about the loss of robin williams. one of the more poignant ones coming from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences. it's an image of williams'

character from aladdin and the words, genie, you're free. >> that's obviously one of his biggest movies. i think people didn't realize how prolific he was. you start looking at the movies and tv shows as well. >> so many generations only at 63, i know him from aladdin and hook and mrs. doubtfire. but going back to mork and min i did i watched those two. craig, you've got some headlines. >> good morning. fbi joining the investigation into the shooting of an unarmed teen in st. louis. nbc's john yang is in ferguson, missouri, for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning. sunrise ends a night that saw police use rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse crowds before major problems could begin. one thing that's still lingering, the emotions still running high here.
7:13 am
for a second straight night, anger, outrage, and a heavy police presence. shots fired as tear gas filled the streets the day michael brown was to have started college. >> nothing can justify what he did to my son. nothing. nothing. >> reporter: investigators said the unarmed brown was shot multiple times after he assaulted a police officer and struggled over his gun. the officer who has not been named is on paid leave. brown's parents say their son was not a troublemaker. >> no. he ain't never fight in school. >> reporter: as the fbi opens its own investigation, locals warn answers may not come quickly. >> there are many sides to the story. we have not all the facts at this point in time. >> reporter: brown's parents have heard from the father of trayvon martin, the florida teen killed by neighborhood watch

it's the first of a new kind of prescription medicine that's used along with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. invokana® is a once-daily pill that works around the clock to help lower a1c. here's how: the kidneys allow sugar to be absorbed back into the body. invokana® reduces the amount of sugar allowed back in, and sends some sugar out through the process of urination. and while it's not for weight loss, it may help you lose some weight. invokana® can cause important side effects, including dehydration, which may cause some people to have loss of body water and salt. this may also cause you to feel dizzy, faint, lightheaded, or weak especially when you stand up. other side effects may include kidney problems, genital yeast infections, urinary tract infections, changes in urination, high potassium in the blood, or increases in cholesterol. do not take invokana® if you have severe kidney problems or are on dialysis or if allergic to invokana® or its ingredients.

symptoms of allergic reaction may include rash, swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing. if you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking invokana® and call your doctor right away or go to the nearest hospital. tell your doctor about any medical conditions, medications you are taking, and if you have kidney or liver problems. using invokana® with a sulfonylurea or insulin may increase risk of low blood sugar. it's time. lower your blood sugar with invokana®. imagine loving your numbers. ask your doctor about invokana®. ♪
