nbc 10 breaking news. here's what we're following this morning, heavy rain overnight left some neighborhoods flooded. look at this. we're live to show you the hardest hit areas. a live look at first alert weather radar shows us that not all of the rain is out of the picture just yet. in fact, some areas under a flash flood warning. britteny will have that for us in a moment. and the death of an officer, he lost his life while off duty. and a live look at the philadelphia skyline. in a few hours it will be lit up in red, bite and blue. we'll tell you why bringing the blue to philadelphia is the reason behind that patriotic display. i'm chris cato.

we are following breaking news from overnight after heavy rains moved through in south jersey where more than 6 inches of rain fell in some parts of cumberland and atlantic counties. this is video from a flooded millville neighborhood where some residents had to be evacuated from their homes. we have team coverage. nbc 10's jesse gary is surveying that flooding in cumberland county. first, first alert meteorologist brittney shipp is with us. >> let's show you a closer look outside right now. we'll show you exactly where the rainfall is. there's a live look at the aramark building where the flags are moving this morning. we'll see a few lingers showers for philadelphia. again, the heaviest rainfall continues to push off to the northeast. right now we are still dealing with moderate rainfall throughout parts of the lehigh valley. you are going to notice, most of the showers track to the

northeast. if you're in the lehigh valley, the poconos, you'll still see a wet commute especially if you're leaving over the next 35 to 40 minutes or so. we will tell you about a flash flood warning, affecting northern parts of atlantic county, stretching down into the southern parts ofç burlington county and also a flood warning that's in effect for millville stretching out to may's landing. millville, we're getting some of the reports in from the national weather service. they picked up 8.92 inches of rainfall yesterday, the second highest tailly rainfall on record dating back to 1947. right now we want to check in with nbc 10's jesse gary who's live in millville for a closer lack at some of the flooding. good morning, jesse. britteny, good morning to you. a lot of the floodwater has abated but there's danger from gas leaks in the area, especially impacting homes here on rhonda drive in cedar. the gas companies are working in

the back ground. they have shut off gas to two homes already, they're now working on a third. floodwaters damaged the basements of three homes here. some people were rescued by boat, other families made it out on their feet carrying belongings and pets with them. the red cross of south jersey is here rourke working to assist residents. an exact count, not available right now. we're working to edit sound with impacted residents to try to have that for you in the next 30 minutes. we're live, cumberland county, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. a tree comes crashing down overnight around 10:30 last night on the 1800 block of bensalem boulevard in bensalem up. the road was closed for a while as crews worked to fix the trees and the downed power line. let's find out if there are other impacts to the roads

because of the weather. >> whenever we have a storm that came through like it did last night, expect to see debris out there, branches down in millville, we've seen a lot of flooding as jesse mentioned, 2nd avenue and main street. sherman avenue if you're heading out the door. bridgestone avenue. 5 near the philadelphia international airport, no construction, no incidents to report. that's good news. a lot of the major roadways are quite right now. chris? >> four minutes after 4:00. happening later today, philadelphia will roll out the red carpet for the democratic national committee. as the city makes its pitch to host the 2016 democratic national convention. and a live look here at the center. in a few hours it will be lit up in red, white and blue to greet the dnc officials who are arriving for a two-day visit to

philadelphia. philadelphia hosted the republican national convention back in 2000. a former dnc chairman said the city was a front-runner to host the dnc that year but the rnc picked it first. a decision is not to be made until later this year or early next year. we're working to get more information on an off-duty police officer killed in a motorcycle crash near harrisburg. tracy davidson is live in our digital operations center. >> we've confirmed the identity of the officer, seth stellfox, 33 years old. authorities say the accident happened late yesterday along the pennsylvania turnpike in cumberland county. the coroner said officer stellfox lost control of his motorcycle, hit a guardrail and was thrown from the bike. he served with philadelphia's 39th police district in nicetown. we are expecting more information from police today. we do know state police investigators tell us that

officer stellfox was wearing a helmet when he was killed. live in the digital operations center, tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. hollywood is remembering legendary lauren bacall. she died yesterday at age 89. the movie star famous for her sultry voice suffered a stroke and died in a new york city hospital yesterday. her career spanned more than 60 years including "the big sleep," "have and have not." she made those films with her husband, humphrey bogart. we're learning more about the death of robin williams. his personal assistant found his body on monday. police say he took his own life. his wife left that morning thinking he was asleep in another bedroom. the 63-year-old battled addiction from decades and was suffering from severe depression. police are not saying if he left a suicide note behind. we're following breaking

news in month many this morning where a woman has been shot in the head in a drive-by shooting in the same town a teenager was shot and killed by a police officer over the weekend. on saturday, 18-year-old michael brown was shot and killed during a scuffle with a police officer. brown was unarmed at the time. the fbi is investigating that shooting. now, protests continued again last night for the third night. this is video from monday night's protest. over the past few days, crowds taunted police and burned and looted stores. (is urging residents to stay calm, saying they must comfort each other in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. police say they will not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting because they've been getting death threats. new this morning from our delaware bureau, the search is on for a person who shot a 17-year-old in wilmington. it happened just after 10:30 last night on the 300 block of north dupont street.

he's in stable condition in the hospital. police are hoping a nearly $26,000 reward will help catch the person that shot up a police department in gloucester county. they want to know who was driving this dark colored sedan. police say that person fired large 7 caliber bullets into the police station yesterday morning. thankfully no one was hurt. a witness described what she heard. >> you could hear it. my neighbor heard the same thing, it was like a pow, pow, pow, pow. it was really loud. >> the department had not received any threats but they say someone clearly wanted to hurt one of the officers there. investigators are now following up on several leads and tips. it is another blow to atlantic city's economy. the bankrupt revel casino hotel says it will close next month after they could not find a buyer. some 3,100 people will lose their jobs when that casino

shuts its doors no later than september 10th. nbc 10 first reported monday that revel did not find any qualified bidders during a bankruptcy auction. revel says it will honor all reservations until it closes. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist briftney shipp. >> good morning. we've seen a lot of rainfall over the past couple of hours, almost 9 inches in millville. as we head into the rest of the morning, we see a few lingering showers before clearing that. flooding concerns will remain. we have a flash flood warning in effect and a flood warning. a.m. showers continue. fall-like temperatures settle in. a live look outside at the city's skyline. mostly cloudy skies for philadelphia. temperatures at 70 degrees. we did stay mild overnight. humidity at 87%. wind speeds out of the northeast at 6 miles per hour. for the rest of the airy, we're in the mid-60s for the poconos,

68 agrees for trenton. temperatures in mt. holly 69 degrees. mid-70s in stone harbor and 71 in dover. again, it is a mild start to your morning here but if you're leaving the house pretty soon, if you're in allentown or the poconos, it will be a wet commute. philadelphia, you should see dry roads. burlington county, parts of cumberland county, still a heads up. just be careful if you see any flooded roadways. take your time getting to work. most of the rainfall, moderate rain right now to the north of allentown pushing into more, heading into the poconos, again, most of this moisture and rain continues to track to the northeast. it is heading out of our area. we have a weather disturbance that will continue to push off to the northeast. we did see a cold front associated with that. our temperatures will stay well below average. flash flood warning to tell you about staying in effect.

highlighted in red. that's done to the north of port republic. for the rest of the area, may's landing heading into millville, we'll see a flood warning that will stay in effect until 8:30. if you see any flooded roadways, turn around. a closer look at our future weather, most of the rain and the clouds clearing up as we head into the late morning. definitely by the afternoon and evening, we see more sunshine coming out. our temperatures will stay down tonight below average. we'll see temperatures staying in the 80s for us. the average, 86 degrees. we stay below that average, heading into the rest of your workweek, even pushing into the weekend. temperatures today will range between 81 and 84 degrees and showers clearing. breezy conditions, 10 to 15 miles per hour. i'll have your seven-day forecast, coming up. before we get to traffic let's take you to breaking news. this is coming from philadelphia's frankfurt neighborhood. this is a live picture thanks to

our photo journalist brian gropp. several hours ago, an employee inside that 7-eleven was robbed on the 5200 block of oxford avenue. they took money from the cash register and pistol whipped the employee there at that 7-eleven. the worker was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. they are looking at the surveillance video and trying to find the robbers we'll keep you posted on that. back to traffic. we had flooding overnight. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jillian mele will tell us what to watch out for. >> you can expect to see flooding, some debris on the road and malfunctioning traffic lights this morning. davisville road and east county line road.ç that can be a busy intersection. use caution. whenever you see a malfunctioning traffic light, make sure you treat it as a four-way stop.

this is the eastbound side past route 202. the bridges are looking good. this is the ben franklin bridge. keep in mind whenever we see rain and the surfaces get wet, expect to see slippery conditions on the bridges. we don't have speed restrictions but it's still a good idea to use caution. more breaking news now and this coming out of mexico where an earthquake just hit the southwestern portion of that country. the quake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck just a few minutes ago. there are no reports of injuries at this point. but, again, this is early. we're monitoring the media reports coming out of that part of mexico. according to the u.s. geological survey, an earthquake of that magnitude can cause considerable damage. we'll continue to watch the wires and the feed and let you know if there are injuries or casualties in that earthquake in mexico. back here at home this morning, a local firefighter is accused of setting fires. that story, straight ahead.

we are following breaking news this morning. if you are waking up in the millville area, then you are waking up to several inches of water. heavy rain overnight moving through, causing flooding problems. take a look at the high school here and you can see how much rain fell overnight with all the water sitting in the parking lot there. several streets are still closed in millville and also people had to evacuate their homes because of flooding. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in millville. he'll have a live report showing us the latest on the flooding conditions. a paraplegic veteran pushed his way out of a second floor window to escape a fire. officials say the man, a marine veteran maneuvered his

wheelchair to the window and jumped to save himself. he's being treated at the hospital for injuries to his upper body. a delaware county firefighter is accused of torching homes and then helping put out the fires. pless say john corcoran of glennolden set three fires and then showed up on the fire truck to put out the flames. he's being hold on $250,000 bail. a 17-year-old is accused of helping him set those fires and is charged as a juvenile. police say a gunman went on a rampage in georgia ending with a man killing himself. he shot several people at one house, drove off, crashed his car in another house, shot someone there, he carjacked another vehicle, led sheriff's deputy on a chase, crashed that vehicle and then took his own life. investigators are still trying to figure out a motive for the rampage. they're saying it may be drug related.

legal experts say nascar driver tony stewart could still face criminal charges in the death of that other driver even though the sheriff found no criminal intent. during a dirt track race on saturday stewart's car hit and killed kevin ward who had gotten out of his car after it was clipped by stewart on the previous lap. ward appeareded to be confronting stewart and his car plowed into him. ward was a sprint car racer who won rookie of the year honors in 2012. he was 20 years old. the professor said the question of whether stewart acted recklessly might be one for a jury to decide. pop star justin bieber is expected to plead guilty in an illegal drag racing case in south florida. there will be a court hearing today but bieber won't be there. the 20-year-old will plead guilty to lesser charges andç agree to take an anger management course and make a $50,000 donation to charity.

it's the latest in legal issues he has faced. look at this, a wall of water came crashing into the cafeteria there at a hospital as horrified employees looked on. no one was hurt, thank goodness. the hospital is still totaling up the damage. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> we saw soaking rains here yesterday, especially in millville, picking up close to 9 inches. we have flooding concerns at least until 5:00 a.m. in parts of burlington county. showers are continuing. fall-like temperatures will settle in. high 70s back in your seven-day forecast. a live look outside right now, overcast skies from philadelphia, 70 degrees, humidity is high at 87%. win speeds out of the northeast at 6 miles per hour. throughout the rest of our region we're seeing a few

showers. reading, mostly cloudy, temperatures at 69 degrees. 70 degrees at the atlantic city airport with mostly cloudy skies and most of the rainfall is mainly confined to the lehigh valley, stretching into parts of the poconos here. you can see the brunt of the moisture has pushed off to the northeast out of our area. as we head into the rest of today, we are going to still see moderate rainfall moving to the north of allentown and it's going to continue to track to the northeast. right into the poconos as we head into the next hour or so. but we are definitely seeing a lot more clearing than what we saw into our overnight hours. a flash flood warning will stay in effect at least until 5:00 a.m. that's for parts of southern burlington county and northern parts of atlantic county. we have a flood warning that will stay in effect for may's landing stretching out to millville. that will be in effect until 8:30. if you're driving and getting up in these areas, make sure you are careful. our future weather shows that all of the rainfall and clouds are going to clear up as we head

into your lunch time hour. by the time you're heading home from work, you probably will even see a little bit of sunshine. we'll see a lot of clearing as we head into the rest of your wednesday and temperatures are going to stay down for us, well below the average of 86 degrees. staying in the low 80s today. once we get rid of the rainfall it will be a nice day. temperatures today at 83 degrees with clearing expected. as we head into tomorrow, mostly sunny. 81 degrees, take a lack at friday, 79, just gorgeous. that's going to set us up for a really nice weekend. 83 degrees on saturday, 86 on sunday. we stay in the mid-80s next week. 4:22 now. let's get a check of the roads. we know there are closures in the millville area because of the flooding. nbc 10's jillian mele has that. >> definitely seeing closures out there in new jersey because of the flooding. millville, second avenue and main street. take sherman avenue if you need to get around that. bridgeton, route 77 near bridgeton avenue.
