the perfect little baby. eight pounds, five ounces. >> michael sent an e-mail around says most of those eight pounds and five ounces are in the cheek. vale is an old english word that means valley by a stream. they named her that because she was so calm and serene. i actually talked to savannah and mike on the phone and the baby was fussing. she was so peaceful. >> until you called. >> but they are overjoyed and everybody is doing great. it is the best news. >> she told me this morning she's had only an hour of sleep, but she's on cloud nine. get a little sleep in between while you can. we're so happy for you guys. more hugs. >> more on this big announcement a little later on. let us get to another top story, this one not as happy. the growing unreth in suburban st. louis after the death of

18-year-old michael brown. president obama briefed on the unfolding situation. nbc's ron allen is in ferguson. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. this is a piece of what police were firing out here last night, the teargas so intense that even this morning you can smell and feel it in the air and in the grass. many people are saying i'm surprised this happened because the level of hostility between the police and protest rs demanding justice for michael brown and his family seems to grow deeper with each passing day. for a fourth straight night intense clashes turned the streets of an american city into a battlefield. teargas sending hundreds of people fleeing for safety. dozens of heavily armed police, s.w.a.t. teams, military style vehicles enforcing an order banning large gatherings after dark. police say they responded with teargas when bottles and molotov cocktails were thrown at him. it all started peacefully.

demonstrators marching through the neighborhood where michael brown was allegedly shot and killed by a police officer. as nice approached, a huge show of force by police. some weapons pointed at the crowd. >> you're subject to arrest if you do not leave the area peacefully. >> reporter: a man on crutches was removed by the officers. this woman apparently got too close. >> we want peace and unity. we don't want an additional relationship with the police. we want to partner with them to find out what happened to bring justice for mike brown. >> reporter: police have insisted their tactics of recent days were necessary because of what they faced. >> the officers have departments have been subject to assaults with rocks, bottles, even gunfire directed at them. >> reporter: some reporters also claim police were heavy handed, forcing them to leave a mcdonald's where they were writing stories near the protest. >> slammed me into the soda machine, grabbed my back and my

phone and put me in temporary restraints. >> reporter: with the investigation into brown's killing expected to take weeks and residents demanding murder charges against the officer who allegedly shot him, many here fear still more confrontation. police say they made ten arrests last night. schools are closed in the area because of all the violence. police are trying to set up a meeting with michael brown's family as they try to do everything possible to cam things down. matt, natalie? >> ron allen, thank you very much. right now to iraq. u.s. special forces are visiting a mountain where thousands of refugees are facing threat from islamic fighters. this morning it appears a u.s.-led mission is not imminent. jim miklaszewski has the story. >> reporter: american troops were on the ground in a combat zone in iraq. those special forces found conditions for those yazidi

refugees now better-than-expected so the b pentagon says a rescue mission is less likely. the u.s. green berets delivered an encouraging assessment. there are far fewer refugees than the tens of thousands first reported. thousands per day had already been flown or escorted out by kurdish forces. after those air drops of food and water, most were in remarkable good conditions, perhaps more importantly u.s. air strikes had driven all isis rebels from the foot of the mountain reducing the immediate threat against the yazidis. still, if some kind of rescue mission is ordered, the u.s. military stands ready. u.s. ospreys and helicopters could handle the load. if refugees walk off the mountain, american fighter jets and drones would provide air cover. meanwhile deputy national security adviser ben rhodes says the air drops of food and water

will continue. >> we're getting aid to the people on the mountain while also trying to determine the best means to bring them to a safe place. >> reporter: for many iraqis it's been impossible to escape the brutality and barbarism of the isis rebels. tales of horror. atrocities against women. >> they rape the females. >> reporter: this man says he saw many bodies simply abandoned and unbelievably people committing suicide rather than be captured. the white house claims those green berets did not violate the president's vow of no u.s. combat troops in iraq because technically they were on a humanitarian mission. officials here argue that combat forces in a combat zone is a combat mission. >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon, thank you. president obama and hillary clinton came together last night for the first time since she publicly criticized her former

boss's approach to former policy. did they hug it out as clinton vowed? nbc white house correspondent kristen welker is on martha's vineyard. >> reporter: good morning to you. the white house won't say whether president obama and hillary clinton literally hugged it out. one official tells me their interaction was cordial and friendly. it took place at democratic donor vernon jordan, where 150 guests dined on surf and turf. all the buzz today is about the obama-clinton face-to-face. the highly anticipated party was held at this martha's vineyard golf course with the president and his former secretary of state sitting at the same table. according to the white house a good time was had by all as both sides try to down play any lingering tensions after secretary clinton recently criticized the president's foreign policy. >> great to be back in the

vineyard. >> reporter: at a book club signing earlier on the island, clinton tried to put on a united front. >> i'm proud i served with limb and for him. >> reporter: a more cordial tone than in the atlantic mag zen where she said president obama could have done more to stop the growth of terrorists in iraq and mocked the statement of don't do stupid stuff. clinton telling the pub cakes, "don't do stupid stuff" is not an organizing principle. it touched off a political firestorm and comparisons to their campaign clashes in 2008. >> you're likable enough. >> reporter: clinton called the president on tuesday to smooth things over. with mr. obama's approval ratings middling, the white house was ready to put the matter to rest. >> they agree on issue an fronting our country even if they have the occasional policy difference. >> reporter: aides say if she

a five-day extension of a gaza truce appears to be holding. violence briefly spiked as the extension of the truce was announced shortly before midnight on wednesday. the firing stopped earlier this morning. meanwhile palestinian negotiators in cairo are optimistic at this point a long-term deal can soon be reached. a russian con say said to be containing humanitarian aid is traveling to eastern ukraine. some are skeptical, accusing moscow of possibly planning an invasion under the guise of humanitarian aid. moscow says the convoy is aimed at at helping the people. frightening moments wednesday for ferry passengers. a 20-foot wave crashed into their vessel. the ferry was traveling from province down, massachusetts to boston when the massive wave hit. it knocked out the power and

broke some windows. >> sitting right there where the window was when the water hit. it was like this huge green sheet of water and boom. then water started pouring through the ceiling. >> the u.s. coast guard sent some help. the ferry managed to restart one engine and docked in boston under its own power. now to a suspected thief who apparently didn't have enough room in his car to get home with the stolen a lot. the 42-year-old man broke into a pharmacy and stole the safe. take a close look. an officer spotted the guy with the man dragging the safe behind the car. moments later the call came in. >> did he think he was going to get away with that? >> maybe he was trying to open it. >> i don't know if he was necessarily in his right mind. >> shocking that alcohol was

involved in here. tiger woods. when do we see tiger on the golf course after he announced wednesday he will not be participating in next month's ryder cup, he released a statement as his recent back problems. apparently his doctors advised him that his back muscles need to be rehabilitated and healed. he withdrew a couple weeks back. his last four outings, not good, not good. >> a tough few years. no question about it look at the bright slide, it opens the slot for someone else to rise to the occasion. >> rory mcilroy. >> not on our team. not going to be a member of the u.s. ryder cup. that's all right. we had the devastating flooding in the east. any lingering effects of that? >> when you have 13 inches of rain it will take a while for it to recede. it's trying the in islip. all across the northeast, we saw so many people trying to drive

through these floodwaters. usually you try to stay away from flood boughters because your car can start floating. when you're on a highway, sometimes there's nowhere to go. we had homes under water. several cars had to be abandoned, trucks as well with people trying to exit those vehicles just because there was too much water. we saw about 6.5 inches in maine yesterday, in portland, maine. this cold front is gone. now we are going to start to see some cool air surging in. it was stalled out down through northern florida. we will see scattered showers and storms out there. also in the southwest we have that monsoonal moisture, the moisture being pulled in from the south. because of that we still have flash flood watches. today a little further east through western colorado and southwestern new mexico, that's where we could see about two to three inches again coming down in a short period of time leads to flash flooding. we'll see showers in eastern washington state. that should alleviate the red flag warnings.

degrees and gorgeous. saturday and you sunday, hotter and humid. broadway was a little darker on wednesday night as the marquees of the great white way were dimmed to honor robin williams. this as the family denies the comedian was struggling financially at the time of his death. joe fryer has more from los angeles. >> experts say depression is a complex issue and there are no answers surrounding williams' apparent suicide. those who knew him are telling the media there were some troubling signs. in the weeks leading up to robin williams' death, some friends say they noticed a change in the man known for making people life. long-time friend stephen pearl thinks williams seemed detached during a barbecue last month. >> he lost weight, looked a bit frail and you could tell something wasn't right. he wasn't all day.

>> reporter: in may, his sitcom "the crazy ones" was canceled and leading roles had become harder to find. still a spokesperson says reports that robin had financial issues are false. at the time of his death williams had four films in the work including another "night as the museum" movie due out in december. >> he could have been wildly successful and incredibly wealthy, and in his eyes it still may not have met the standards he set for himself. >> reporter: throughout his career williams was candid about battles with addiction and depression. in a 2010 interview with comedian mark mayor rin he announced relapsing a few years earlier after a long stretch of sobriety. >> it's trying to file the hole. >> reporter: in the wake of his death friends and family hope

disappeared. they were arrested a few hours later at another hotel. it's a shock for friends and neighbors. >> spoke to sheila a week and a half ago. we were discussing some things going on. >> reporter: friends say life in their family home was strained. >> i heard they had domestic issues, especially after heather's dad died. >> reporter: oak park place say they've been called to the home 86 times on domestic issues since 2004. heather does haven't a criminal record but tommy does, outstanding arrest warrant for marijuana possession and earlier this year charged with disorderly conduct after he was found in this high-end chicago hotel partying with heather on her mother's credit card. what started as a dream vacation on paradise island could end in a murder trial. >> they put the suitcase in the

for michael brown and his family. heavily armed police were trying to break up a demonstration and force order banning gatherings late at night when police say all the problems start. the police say they fired teargas at the car because they were having bottles, rocks and molotov cocktails thrown at them. a lot of residents were outraged by the size of the police response. the military-style vehicles, the s.w.a.t. teams on the streets of an american city. still, more protests are planned today. there are more calls for peace. we understand the governor of the state is coming down here to try to oversee things, to try to calm things down. police are doing everything they can to try and calm the situation down, but they are determined not to let gatherings form on the streets at night when they say all the problems start. craig, back to you. >> rob allen in ferguson, thank you. the united nations warned overnight that the humanitarian crisis in iraq has reached its highest emergency level after the invasion by isis's islamic

militants. u.s. military planes completed their seventh air drop to food and water to refugees on an american mountains. american green berets say many refugees have been able to leave thanks to improving health and those u.s. air strikes. that could make it less likely that the united states special forces will have to stage a rescue mission. the white house won't say whether president obama and hillary clinton actually hugged and made up wednesday night at a party on martha's vineyard. mrs. clinton joked earlier that she planned to hug it out oovps with her former boss after her recent criticism on his approach to foreign policy. the two were seated at the same table at last night's gathering. the white house will only say that their interaction was cordial and a good time was had by all. a california school board has voted against using a new sex education textbook after many parents complained that it's too graphic for ninth graders. some parents blasted the textbook titled "your health

>> there's not a common ingredient. the common kind of issue is it's being made unprofessionally in labs, in basements, sometimes i've heard of cement mixers being used to mix this product with the herbs and spices and cloves. it's unregulated and dangerous. no one knows what's in it. >> i can't imagine why this is being allowed to be sold at a convenient store, even if it says not for consumption. some of the packages say "all natural." you have a teenager saying all natural? what could be so bad. >> maybe a teenager is saying it. i think what's happening is they're finding out about these products from their friends and saying it's giving a great high, i'll test it. the problem is you don't know the quality or the quantity. >> if you're a teenager watching the news and hearing more and more stories about the legalization of marijuana, and hearing about more of these medical dispensaries opening up and the growth in that market, and now you ooi ear saying wait

the same concept. it's a great company and has done very well. coming up jenna bush hager good morning, at 8:26. i'm jillian mele. we're following breaking news and an eight-mile backup as you approach the mid-county toll plaza. goes from approaching lanesdale because of an accident, two accidents blocking the left lane just about a mile from the pennsylvania turn pike on the northeast extension. just to give you an example, this is what drivers are seeing right now. one of my viewers sent me a tweet saying it is a parking lot here. delay of eight to nine miles southbound because of that accident. if you don't have to travel the northeast extension, definitely avoid it. you can take 309 if you need to get around it. we're also following another traffic-related story.

first, i'm not the only one on a detox. our anchors each gave up something and so did many of our viewers. it's time to check in to see who is succeeding and who is cheating. >> i was doing great with my detox, giving up on my screen until i was given a visit by con died. it will never happen again. >> i did have one breakdown. i did some shopping but i needed to for work. i have a excuse i think. what do you think? >> i gave up bread for the month of august, bread and pasta. i was on vacation all week last week. going out to great dinners and i held, i held strong. no bread, no pasta. >> i gave up sweets. i'm going to be completely honest with swallowing a truth pill. i have cheated, but not a lot. >> what a surprise. >> i ate those fantastic little miniature rubens. >> you gave up bread. >> yes. that's the only cheating i've done the whole time.

>> the status of my check-in. i am clean of shopping, withstood challenges in the last two weeks. i went to target, bought only the necessities, nothing else, even though i was dieing because it was tax-free. recently have been really shopping in my closet. i have found some stuff that still had the tags on it, stuff that, once again, i forgot about and i'm wearing it all. it's hard and hard and hard and hard as this is, i'm doing it. so far, so strong. thanks for your support. >> detox day one and i kind of feel like i already blew it. i didn't say anything negative about the way i look, i was thinking it, and that's not good enough for me. day nine and i definitely messed up today. this morning emma had jumped into bed with me and i audibly said i looked laos see. i immediately turned around not knowing if she caught it. but i got her attention and paid

the penalty i set for myself, and i told her three nice things about the way i thought i looked. what did i say about myself? >> you said i like my smile and i like my eyes and i'm in pretty good shape for my 40s. >> i survived my first morning without any coke at all, and about now i'm pretty much dieing. >> day two of the detox is wrapping up. it was brutal today. i was really, really ready to throw in the towel. i wanted to invite you into my office and show you a couple things around here. right across the hallway, ta da! i made it one week without drinking any soda at all. one week, i can't even believe it. this is by far and away the longest i've ever gone, ever gone without any soda. my number one supporter, of course, is my husband. he's been insane. he keeps saying how proud he is of me.

that's huge. >> i have to say i love this whole thing, this detox thing. it's great for me. i realize when i shop now. and i know it's usually when i'm bored. jill, what about you? >> you told me you have so much more time because you're not shopping online. this is all i have, this flip. the internet and the text is disabled. this is my actual phone. >> this is jill's actual smart phone. if i swipe it and open up. unopened e-mails, 1,898. >> okay. that's for two weeks. my line i said is call me on my flip. if you need me for work, everybody is calling me. if you send 20 e-mails, i get that done in four minutes. they call, i speak to the child. we make a plan. it's not efficient in a lot of ways, but in a lot of ways it is, my interpersonal relationships even in two weeks is better because you pick up the phone. >> talking to people again. >> i'm not the one bumping into people on the streets. my heads up. >> it's been great.

have you ever been in a super market and trying to figure out what the different labels on products mean. reduced fat, low fat, fat free, nothing added. it seems impossible to find out what is actually good for you. lisa lee greenman is with shop smart magazine is here with her food label decoder. good morning, lisa. >> good morning. >> you would think the fda would have regulations that would help us understand a little better what we're buying here. we're not talking about nutrition labels here, talking about food labels. >> front of food labels which can be confusing. the fact of the matter is the facts are on the back. the front might be very misleading. the front-of-label claims can be misleading. you want to look at the nutrition panel. >> for example, when you see multi grain versus whole grain.

which is better? multi grain, some people sound like you're getting more grains. >> more grains sound better. whole grain is the key. whole grains are what have all the nutrition and the fiber built in. you always want to look on the back and make sure whole grain is one of the first ingredients, especially when looking at a multigrain product. it doesn't matter how many grains you have, you want to make sure they're whole. >> next is reduced versus low. for example, low fat, reduced fat or reduced sodium, low sodium. what's better? >> kind of confusing out there. you might think it's very similar or the same. in fact, low fat is better than reduced fat. low fat has to have three grams or less per serving versus reduced fat could have just 25% less than the regular version, but the regular version might be loaded with fat. >> they don't make the claim that it's reduced. >> same thing with low sodium.

has to have 140 milligrams or less per serving versus 25 -- versus reduced which means 25% less than the regular version. if you're talking about a product like chilli in the can, the regular version might be loaded with salt. look for low sodium, low fat. >> this is one that always stumps me is sugar free or no sugar added. very tricky one. >> it is tricky. neither of them are better than the other. no sugar added means it's got to have less than half a gram per serving. but it might be loaded with artificial sweeteners, you might not want those. no sugar added, it may not have any sugar added, but it may have a lot of natural sugars. juices and things like that have a lot of natural sugars. you don't want to od on sugar in general. four grams of shug ga equal a teaspoon. you only want maybe nine

teaspoons a day for heart health. >> which goes very quickly. >> it does. >> next is fiber. there's high fiber and also you'll see products claim they're made with extra fiber. what's the difference? >> what you want to look for is excellent source of fiber. that guarantees you'll get at least five grams per serving. a good source means 2 1/2 grams per serving. anything that is just says added fiber needs to have 10% more than a comparable product. if a comparable product doesn't have a lot of fiber, it doesn't need a lot. out want a lot of grams of fiber in your diet every day, at least 25 to 30 per day. look on that -- the back of the label, look for the grams of fiber and try to load up. >> the last one right here, and this is basically talking about processed meats. when you see no nitrates added and you also see uncured. what is the difference here? are they truly nye traits free? >> that's it.

neither of these things are good because nye trits and nitrates are used to preserve processed meats to make them taste better and look better. but they also produce a compound that could cause cancer. if it says uncured or no nitrates, the problem is it might still be naturally cured with an ingredient like celery powder or juice and that produces nitrates that produce it is chemicals. >> a lot to take in. lisa lee free man. thank you so

it was a few weeks after that that my parents got my younger brother and my baby sister and me up very early one morning and hurriedly dressed up. my brother and i were in the living room looking out the front window and we saw two soldiers marching up our driveway. they had bayonets on their rifle, stomped up the front porch, banged on the doofrmt my father answered it and literally at gunpoint we were ordered out of our home on garner street in los angeles. my father gave us little pieces of luggage to carry. my brother and i and my father were in the driveway waiting for my mother to come out. when she finally emerged she had our baby sister, she was still an infant and a huge duffle bag in the other arm and tears were streaming down both their cheeks. that is a memory i will never
