nbc 10 breaking news. this breaking news into nbc 10, a philadelphia police officer shot in the line of duty. nbc 10 has team coverage this morning. this is video from the ground just moments after that shooting happened about three hours ago. this is a live look now at the still very active scene from skyforce 10 in the tacony neighborhood of philadelphia. the gunman was shot and killed by police. the officer is in stable condition. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. we'll get to your weather and traffic in just a few minutes. we begin with that breaking news on the officer involved shooting, a philadelphia police officer shot during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect. it happened around 12:45 this morning on the 6400 block of ditman street in the tacony section ofç the city.

live team coverage, nbc 10's jesse gary is at the hospital where that officer is still being treated and katy zachry is live at the shooting location there in tacony. >> reporter: hi, chris, this is the intersection of torresdale and magee, where the shooting happened around 12:45. this police van was hit by a bullet and the suspect's gun is sitting next to an evidence marker on the sidewalk behind it. there is still a loot of ballistic evidence out here at the scene. the scene is expanding by the minute, more than 30 evidence markers are out here that crime scene detectives are process. you have internal affairs officers out here as well. they got word a man armed with a gun was on the 6400 block of ditman street. they responded to that call on their way to ditman street, they

encountered that armed man here at the intersection of torresdale and magee. they tried to stop him, police tell us, but the man we're told immediately fired at them, hitting officer corpowski on the left side of his head. he returned fire as well as three other officers. the suspect died around 1:35 this morning as a result of the injuries he sustained here. he was taken to frankfurt torresdale hospital. they believe the suspect fired at least two times, once hitting the police van which is still in the middle of the intersection and the second time hitting officer steven korpowski. with more on that, we go to jesse gary who is live at the hospital. >> reporter: let's take a look at the video. about 90 minutes ago a swarm of police activity outside einstein medical center as officers

within several divisions of the philadelphia spoipt and neighboring departments rushed to einstein to check on the condition of the officer. he has a grade wound to the left side of his head. >> some bleeding and so forth but he is alert. he is talking. he's very fortunate. a half inch over, a bit more and we'd be planning a funeral now. >> reporter: and this is another live look at the shooting scene in tacony where the suspect wounded the officer. we're told he's married. he has a newborn baby girl at home, just three weeks old. his wife is inside instein right now with him. coming up in the next 30 minutes, we'll talk about the road to recovery, what lies ahead for him. live in olney, jesse gary. here's what we know.

stephen korpalski suffered a graze wound to the head. this all went down been 12:45 when officers were called to ditman street for a report of a man with a gun. once they saw that man, the suspect just turned and immediately fired at the officers. they believe he fired at least two shots. four officers returned fire. that suspect still unidentified at this time is dead. you can count on nbc 10 to keep you updated onç this breaking story. our reporters are out there following all of the developments. we'll have live updates throughout the morning. we're also talking live later to commissioner ramsey about this police-involved shooting that could have proven very deadly for their officers as well. you can follow the latest information on nbc10.com. and this morning's shooting was not the only activity overnight for philadelphia police. an officer also opened fire in north philadelphia after someone

released several dogs on police. skyforce 10 was over the scene at 3400 block of north 6th street around 2:30 this morning. police were investigating a burglary in that area. no one was hurt. again, we're told someone released their dogs at police, police fired shots. several people have been arrested. okay, let's get to weather and traffic for this tuesday morning. meteorologist tedd florendo is in with a look at the forecast. we enjoyed another great day yesterday, a little cooler than we expect in august. >> especially this time of the year. we know, chris, we get high humidity levels and of course the warmer temperatures not the case for the day today. and looks like this week looks pretty good, too. outside right now we're starting off cool with clouds out there. you can hardly see them as we take a look at center city from the aqua cam. it's staying dry at least for philadelphia. there are a few clouds and showers that popped up in sussex county. they've diminished, brief, quick showers, currently outside, not too bad.

philly, pottstown, upper 60s for the shore. dover at 71 degrees at this hour. here is your day planner for the day today. we'll start off with the clouds this morning. 72 degrees at 9:00 a.m., fewer clouds and then partly sunny by noon, 81 degrees, high today will be 84, also under partly sunny skies. looks like this week we are expecting showers. we'll show you when that's going to happen coming up. let's get a quick traffic update from jillian mele. >> good morning, tedd. we have a lot of roads closed because of the shooting investigation in tacony. ditman between levick and hellerman, that will be completely blocked off. torresdale avenue, expect to see a lot of closures. torresdale is a big road in that area. frankfurt avenue is okay if you need to use that. this is a live look from one of our penndot cameras in the area. see how big that scene is out

there. this is a camera we'll continue to follow especially as we head into the morning rush hour. stick to frankfurt avenue if you are heading out in that area. the rest of the majors, looking pretty good. 51 is the average on 76 this morning. chris? the sights and sounds of police in ferguson, missouri, breaking up another large protest, officers again firing tear gas at the crowd there. the protesters apparently violated a new police ban on assembling in one place. demonstrators have been hitting the streets of ferguson for more than a week now after an unarmed teenager was shot and killed by police. tracy davidson is live in our digital operations center where she's been tracking the developments overnight. >> police wrapped up a news conference about 30 minutes ago. here's what we know.

we know who people were shot overnight in the chaos and 31 people were arrested. some of them from out of state. the newsç conference tonight fm police took on a very different tone than previous nights. police said there's a small group of criminals trying to pass themselves offs aprotesters. many -- police say many people are are coming from other parts of the country to cause trouble. two of the people arrested, one from new york, one from california. protesters have a right to protest but criminals do not have a right to throw objects at police or fire their guns. >> we are going to make this neighborhood whole. we're going to make this community whole and we're going to do it together. i am not going to let the criminals who have come out from across this country or live in that community define this neighborhood and define what we're going to do to make it right. >> the st. louis suburb has been the scene of racial unrest after a white ferguson police officer shot and killed 18-year-old michael brown on august 9th. witnesses say brown was unarmed.

now, the missouri national guard has arrived in ferguson to help restore order there. white buses carry the soldiers to the command post area. later national guard humvees arrived as well. the national guard will be under the direction of the state highway patrol. their mission is to solely protect the police officers. also we know u.s. attorney general eric holder is expected to travel to ferguson tomorrow to meet with fbi officials and other investigators carrying out the independent investigation into brown's death. we continue to monitor the situation in ferguson, live in the digital operations center, tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. now to the casino crisis in atlantic city. a two-day job fair begins today in atlantic city with thousands of people scrambling for work. maryland live casino will be at the sheraton atlantic city convention center from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and then tomorrow from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon. show boat, revel and trump plaza are all set to close in the

coming weeks, leaving about 8,000 people out of work. negotiates continue between septa and the union. the board chairman was given the authority quled to sign any agreement between septa and both unions. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist tedd florendo. >> we have seen a very unaugust-like weather lately. that will continue again today, maybe even all week, too. another day of comfort as far as our temperatures go because the humidity up a little bit but still not like we usually get in august. showers, however, will be returning, we'll pinpoint exactly when we'll see those coming up. still no 90s this week. i know a lot of you aren't complaining about that. live look outside right now shows a few clouds out there, otherwise mostly clear right now for philadelphia. 71 degrees. calm winds right now, humidity at 75%.

the humidity will climb a little today but still not oppressive. still not uncomfortable. it's up right now about 75%, 78 for wildwood, 80% for pottstown. this will drop as the day goes on within we're looking at dew points that are comfortable for the day today. washington township at 66, horsham at 60 even for our current temperature. cool in the lehigh valley. we're at 62 for pottstown and 68 for atlantic city and 67 forç whitmore. still comfortable for the day today. a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures right around 84 degrees today, winds fairly light. we still have the clouds in the morning but get to sunshine later on in the afternoon. the poconos are at 77, mostly sunny, a mix of sun and clouds for the lehigh valley and the shore. 80 degrees down the shore.

it looks like we're expecting temperatures to still stay comfortable this week. the showers will return on thursday. maybe even on friday but looking good as we head into the weekend. chris? >> as we touched on earlier this morning, exchange of gunfire between police and a suspect led to road closures in the area. jillian mele has an update. >> we have a lot of closures in the tacony section of philadelphia. this is one of the few traffic areas we have out in that area, ditman street, torresdale, heller man. one of the main road you can take is frankfurt avenue. torresdale is completely blocked off. as you can see, there's a lot of police activity out there. we'll continue to keep you on top of that this morning. this is a live look in center city philadelphia. vine street expressway is quiet in both directions. that's the westbound side as drivers head out to 76. 76 is also quiet right now. no major construction to report on 76 this morning. we have some on the new jersey

turnpike on the northbound side near route 322 which as you can see, exit to the left lane is blocked right now. chris? >> count on nbc 10 to keep you on top of breaking news. a philadelphia police officer is in stable condition in the hospital now after being shot in the lien of duty. officer steven korpalski was grazed in the head. skyforce 10 still live over that scene for us right now. again, officer korpalski and the other officers responded there for a report of someone with a gun. when the officers confronted that man, authorities say he opened fire on police, shooting at least twice. grazing the officer in the head. the suspect was hit several times and was killed. but, again, officer korpalski is in stable condition. a graze wound to the head. extremely lucky according to commissioner ramsey. stay with nbc 10 for continuing coverage throughout the morning.

4:16. if you're just waking up, we're following breaking news in philadelphia's tacony neighborhood. a philadelphia police officer by the name of stephen korpalski is in stable condition after being grazed in the head. shots were fired by a man police confronted on the 6400 block of ditman street. officers returned fire, killing that man. he has not been identified yet. skyforce 10 live over the scene. you see the intersection. the street is blocked off. jillian mele is getting us around those road closures in that area of the tacony neighborhood. more from her in just a moment. officer korpalski is in stable

condition. we've learned he's a 14-year veteran of the force, the philadelphia police department. also a new father. just had a baby about three weeks ago. his wife, according to jesse gary, is at the hospital now. ahead at 4:30. live reports from jesse and katy zachry live at the scene as we continue our team coverage. stay with us on that. a former secretary for the city of philadelphia is scheduled to be sentenced to prison. nancy gonzalez was convicted in 2012 on several charges including theft and tampering with public records. authorities say she stole nearly $25,000 worth of social security checks from an elderly woman whom she was caring for. gonzalez was an employee of the city for more than three decades. now to this news from our delaware bureau. violation notices have been sent to the owners of the land where illegally dumped piles of dirt led to the closure of the 495 bridge that's impacted traffic for months now. many offenses involve fines up

to $2,000 per day for each violation. dupont says it never gave approval to stockpile the dirt there which engineers say caused the support columns of the bridge to shift and prompted the bridge to be closed in june. the southbound lanes of the bridge have re-opened but the northbound side is not expected to re-open until labor day. shot dead at a concert for peace. now a philadelphia family is trying to figure out how it happened to their son and who's responsible. alexis gavara was shot to death last wednesday night in the parking lot of the dell music center in straw ber mansion. take a close look. officers want to find this person and talk to him about that shooting. hundreds of peát were at that peace concert at the dell music center when a fight broke out. gavara was shot in the stomach and leg. he later died at the hospital. we talked to his sister.
