that i think a lot would like to write but has no guts to do it. we'll talk about it in a little while. >> there's a lot more going on including more in ferguson. >> new unrest and chaos in that area. police were backed up by members of missouri's national guard. but the troops kept their distance from the protesters. this as attorney general eric holder prepares to travel to ferguson to meet with investigators and community leaders. we'll talk to michael brown's parents in a moment, but first ron allen is in ferguson once again. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. police say they were targeted by a small criminal element using the protest as cover. they made 31 arrests. there is a new twist. many of the suspects were from out of town from as far away as california and new york. >> get on the ground! >> reporter: police rush in, a strong show of force. firing tear gas to disperse a huge crowd. making dozens of arrests.

police cracked down, they say, when their units came under attack. >> i listened over the radio and heard the screams of those officers who were under gunfire. we can't have that. >> reporter: police have tried yet another tactic with the national guard as backup, more officers on foot, trying to give the officers a designated space. these are the rules tonight. you can march a quarter mile in each direction. this is a stretch of road where some of the worst violence has happened during the past few days. the protesters' loudest demand, arrest officer darren wilson who shot and killed michael brown. >> why hasn't he been processed like anybody else? that's all we're asking, man. if he's so innocent, what do we have to be afraid of the law for? he is the law! >> reporter: earlier brown's family released the results of a autopsy they commissioned. six gunshot wounds.

two to the head. >> all these gunshot wounds were survivable except for the one in the top of the head that went through the brain. >> reporter: while brown's family claims he was surrendering, some say he was assaulting the officer. it may take months whether to decide to charge the officer. >> we don't want to do it quickly. we want it to be very thorough. >> reporter: and now sybrina fulton is offering support to the family. writing i wish i had a word of automatic comfort, but i don't. meanwhile, police here in ferguson fight an uphill battle to keep the peace. and police seem very focused on gathering as much intelligence as they can about the protests. one reason they may have arrested so many people. a lot of names and phone numbers to follow up on. >> thank you very much. lesley mcspadden and michael

brown sr. join us now with their attorney benjamin crump. my condolences on the loss of your son. >> thank you. >> tenth straight night of violence in ferguson. the national guard is there now and still the violence ended just hours ago. ms. mcspadden, what will bring peace to the streets of ferguson? >> justice. justice will bring peace, i believe. >> only if that justice results in the arrest or charges being fired against officer wilson? is that what it's going to take? >> yes. he ain't been arrest. hold him accountable for what he did. >> mr. brown, do you have faith in the system in this matter? >> yes, i do. >> do you think it's worked so far? >> no. >> so what gives you the faith

it will work eventually? >> eventually justice will prevail. >> i want to ask you about the autopsy that was conducted on behalf of your family. i don't want to go into great detail, but we do know he was shot six times. did you learn what you think you needed to know from that autopsy that gives you a clearer picture of what happened to your son that night? >> no. >> what more do you need to know? >> why. >> why. >> why. what was the cause for that? excessive force. >> i want to ask you about -- >> nobody deserves this. >> let me ask you about that force, and let me bring ben in on this. they said police shootings are

different from other shootings because officers by law are authorized to use force. you have to determine whether the level of force in each case was appropriate or excessive. ben, based on what you saw in that autopsy performed by dr. bodden, are you confident this was excessive force? >> i think clearly this was excessive force, matt. in fact, you look at the autopsy, the witness accounts when he put his hands up and surrender and all the witnesses say he continued to shoot, it's going to be an issue that comes before this prosecution praying that he is arrested that the jury will have to decide what was necessary force used. all the witnesses say it seemed like an execution-style murder. you can't do this to our children the broad daylight.

>> ms. mcspadden and mr. brown, you're looking for justice for your son. do you think this continuing violence in the streets of ferguson runs the risk of overshadowing that search for justice? in some ways, does it detract from justice for your son? >> no. no. >> i think that it does somewhat. because it is a distraction, but we won't let it distract us to the point where we lose focus. we have to remain focused and we have to remain strong and the violence needs to stop. when justice is prevailed, it may regain the trust in the locals. but right now it's really out of control. >> we need to keep the focus on michael brown jr. that's who we need to keep the focus on.

michael brown jr. >> mr. brown, ms. mcspadden, ben, thank you very much for your time this morning. i appreciate it. >> thank you. >> thank you. a dangerous new wildfire is raging in california this morning near yosemite. the flames burning near a propane company. and now leading to evacuation orders for 13,000 homes and businesses. now standing by with what the firefighters are dealing with is al. >> we'll show you what we're looking at. just to the east we've got monsoonal moisture making its way into the southwest. but there'sat's not going to ma in where they need it the most. a high danger in central and southern california. also extreme to exceptional drought for about the entire state of california. there's no relief in sight. no rain in sight. the jet stream is way up to the north. and so that's not helping.

and then the other big story we're watching in the southeast, this upper level high pressure. going to be watching temperatures rise up into the upper 90s. 92 in houston and atlanta. with humidity levels that are going to bring the heat indexes well over 100. it will top out by friday, but there's a lot of dangerous heat especially for the elderly and the young throughout a good portion of the southeastern plains. >> thanks, al. natalie has the latest on the pentagon's mission in iraq. >> that's right. this impact is now being felt as islamic militants were driven from mosul. bill is in erbil, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. identify just come from the top of mosul dam, newly liberated. it's the biggest in iraq.

and this is the sigte of the first victory over militants here in iraq. it was won by u.s. air power and kurdish fighters. the ground is littered with destroyed isis vehicles. they are on the run. kurdish fighters celebrating a rare victory over islamic militants. they displayed the ieds and booby traps they had planted. but it was one tube from the war. more than 30 times in recent days. >> with our support, iraqi and kurdish forces took a major step forward by recapturing the largest dam in iraq near mosul. if that dam was breached, it could have proven catastrophic. >> reporter: their fire power has tipped the balance of this

battle inflicting a significant defeat on isis. this is the first time the seemingly unstoppable advance of isis has not only been halted but we versed. refugees are deeply grateful that the u.s. and kurdish troops are forcing isis back. the militants killed this little girl's sister. without america, says her father, we never would have pushed them away. they have lost everything. but one small comfort is that their enemies have now lost ground and perhaps a crucial battle. the president saying there it could have been catastrophic had isis kept control of the dam. because of the fear they might have blown it up leaving a tsunami cascading for baghdad and threatening the lives of tens of thousands. it's now out of their hands. the big question, will this turn the tide against isis or was

this one isolated victory? >> thank you, bill. iranian negotiators extended the truce for another 24 hours. it came before a cease-fire was coming to an end. they're still trying to reach a long-term deal in the gaza strip. a community on edge this morning after police uncovered a mass shooting plot at a high school. pasadena police arrested two teenagers who planned to kill three staff members and gun down as many students as possible. the suspects did not have any weapons but police say they were trying to get them. the school staffer noticed something suspicious, that's when he called police. school is scheduled to resume on thursday. a frightening scene in los angeles monday night when an suv plowed through a crowded pizza shop. at least seven people were hurt including a 5-year-old boy who

the average speed southbound near çallegheny. drive time is 21 minutes southbound from wood haven to the vine. this is 76 slow in both directions out near route 1 and city avenue, especially on the westbound side, drive time 31 minutes west from the vine to the blue route. tracy? a philadelphia police officer is recovering after being shot in the head early this morning. the call came in just after midmight that a man was armed with a gun on ditman street in tacony. officer stephen korpalski and his partner encountered the armed man at torresdale and magee. the gunman opened fire at police, grazing korpalski in the head. he was rushed to einstein hospital. he and three other officers initially shot back, hitting and kiting the suspect. we're still waiting on an i.d. for the suspect. officer stephen korpalski has been released from the hospital. you can always get the latest news and weather at nbc10.com. see you in 25 minutes.

like. she hopes by releasing the tape she and the police can find out who he is. you know that eerie feeling that somebody's watching you? in this case, it was more than a hunch. a peeping tom caught on tape eyes right up to the window of a woman's bedroom. >> to all of a sudden realize that there's been someone watching you and you don't know for how long, it's incredibly scary. >> reporter: the victim doesn't feel safe sharing her identity with the peeping tom still on the loose. >> he seems to know when i'm home and when i'm not. the incident when we caught him on camera, i had literally just got home maybe ten minutes before. >> reporter: she and her neighbors say they started noticing strange things around their bright neighborhood a few months ago. >> i heard little noises. but when i would look, it was like houdini. he'd be gone. >> reporter: she thinks her boyfriend even saw him one

night. a man saying he was looking for his puppy. that's when they decided to set up cameras. when she was in the shower feet away, this is what those cameras caught. >> and i saw that it was a face. it was instantly i wanted to throw up. and it was a moment of panic. >> reporter: with no one in the bedroom, the man leaves. but not before giving the camera a clear view. a picture his victims hope people will share on social media and that someone will recognize. >> this creep, this man took that from me, the sense of home i had in my apartment. i don't know if i could get that feeling back, that sense of security. i do want to go home. i miss being home. i miss sleeping in my own bed. >> reporter: police have includ increased patrols in the area. by the way, this wasn't a sophisticated surveillance system. a camera for 150 bucks and app

carolyn wozniacki. some credited his success to the ending of that relationship and a chance to focus on his golf game. what did you mean by that? >> that was taken out of context. what i meant was it's not directly related in any way. i may or may not have a little bit more time on my hands, but that doesn't mean this is why i'm playing great golf. you know, regardless of whether i'm in a relationship or not, i feel i'm capable of this golf. >> reporter: with mcilroy's game now where he wants it, he's able to enjoin the perks of superstardom. like dropping by fallon with tiger woods. even hitting the driving range later that night at a nike event. does that scare you to get the

comparison to tiger? >> i don't feel like i'm the next tiger. i feel i'm the only rory mcilroy. what he did for the game in the late '90s, no one will be able to replicate. but i'll try and replicate some of the things that he's done on the golf course. >> reporter: he'll have another chance to do that next season. mcilroy says he's already peeking ahead to next april. when he can trade his green polo for a first green jacket. >> i've always been obsessed with the masters. it's the only major championship i haven't won. i'm prepared for that. i'm ready for it. >> anybody who follows professional golf knows about a magic number. 18. that's the number of majors won by jack nichols. now with four majors for rory mcilroy at the age of 25, a lot of people including jack nichols are saying he's the guy that could catch jack. >> i think he'll do it if he stays healthy.

what the faa says is a reoccurring problem in this country. the illegal use of drones. they say they could be jeopardizing your safety every time you fly. and this morning there's a new concern. terry sanders has the story this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm in florida where marksmen like to take aim at these. they're called clay pigeons. but now there's a new twist on this sport where folks are taking aim on drones could be illegal. old school skeet shooting meets new world drones. but the faa says these shooted drone gatherings are illegal. an investigate came badge in hand who asked we not identify him as he was there to shut them down.

>> the faa rules that you cannot use drones in a commercial process. >> reporter: a commercial process because shooters are charged a fee to participate. but organizers say the faa is overstepping its authority. >> it's a form of intimidation. it's bullying. it's trying to bluff people with sternly worded letters and the occasional fine to try to enforce something that they don't have the right to enforce. >> reporter: in march of this year, a federal judge did rule there was no enforceable faa rule on low altitude drones. >> aren't they just toys with batteries? >> they're not illegal drones in your mind? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: shooting at drones that cost $45 to rebuild continues. at a nearby airstrip, pilots said they had no idea drones were aloft much less that anyone was shooting guns skyward. >> it concerns us because you don't know how long they're

going to be or how high. >> reporter: organizers of this event says nobody came forward and said shooting a gun in the air was a problem. but the faa says a drone is an aircraft and shooting at it poses a safety hazard. for now that's not stopping people from taking aim at a new target. that for some sportsmen has become a trophy unlike any other. >> drones! >> pull! >> reporter: marksmen say they like to shoot at drones because the pilot can fly them so erratically and that tests their skills. but here at the ok corral and other gun clubs, they're trying to figure how to do this legally. so far they have not brought in drones here. >> thank you very much. i might hear that in my ear all day. pull!

area. but after dark, gunfire confrontation. so police went in to clear the streets. using vehicles, tactical units to get the streets clear as soon as possible. 30 arrests, now they're focused on trying to gather as much intelligence as possible about the protesters, about the people involved so they can single out the criminal element and get rid of it. >> ron allen in ferguson, missouri, thank you. evacuation orders were issued overnight for 13,000 homes, hotels, and businesses in california because of an out of control wildfire near yosemite national park. the juncture fire has scorched in california. at one point it came close to a pair of massive propane tanks. at least eight buildings have already burned down and two firefighters have been injured. a truck driver's courage saved the day after a fiery crash caught on camera.

pat o'brien had a very successful television career. news, sports, and entertainment. but he didn't just cover the headlines. he actually made some several times during his public battles with drugs and alcohol. including an infamous voice mail scandal in 2005. he tells all in his new memoir. welcome back. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> how are you doing? >> i'm great. six years sober. a lot of people come up and say way to go, pat. i finally found that. you said long battle, i had four rehabs. eventually i hope we can say there's a way out of this stuff. >> i think this is a book that a

lot of celebrities dream of writing, they fantasize about writing and don't have the guts to write. where'd you find the guts? >> you know, i spent my life in sports and entertainment and news and then in the entertainment side really kind of helping destroy people. i mean, that's what those shows were about. you die by drugs or get caught with drugs, that's the only time we brought up recovery. and so i thought if i'm going to write about -- by the way, i rip nobody more than myself in the book. >> you rip other people though. you're tough on coworkers. >> i am. and sometimes coworkers can be tough. but i -- yeah. you know, i wrote the book so people could know that there's a way out. even for me. >> let's get to the elephant in the room. the voice mail, the scandal that brought you to a standstill. it was all about let's go get some drugs and hookers and whatever. you were extremely drunk when you left that. >> in a blackout.

people who drink do stupid things. people who drink and go into a blackout really do stupid things. i think i might be the first person who has done that, by the way. >> i'm sure. you write in the book there were no hookers, there was no sex, nobody got hurt, nobody had sex. as scandals go it seems lame. although as charlie sheen told me later, that was an excellent effort, my man. >> the good news is none of that happened. and i still don't remember it. and the better news is it forced me to go get help. that's the message of the book. >> you talk about your dad. turns out pat o'brien fit down well at the end of the bar where he was as well. you talk about the fact your drinking and drug use started with the scene in chicago. >> when i first started drinking, it's fun. i've drank with you. >> yes, we have. >> we've had fun. i was a fun guy at the table for

awhile. >> up until around 11:00. >> then you go home and i stay out. and i got fascinated in chicago. but the drinking scene in the news business is always good. just because you have a few drinks doesn't mean you're an alcoholic. one for me was not too many and a thousand was not enough. >> and it seemed it started with the music scene but then your fame, the money, the access to the parties and celebrities fueled it. you talk about spiraling downward. you're in an l.a. lakers game one night and you run into your good friend and mine maria shriver and she screamed at you. >> she did. mariah carey once grabbed me and said enough. i was down to 130 pounds. she said enough, enough. and maria who had been through this in her own family said you've got to take care of this. i had a lot of people on my side and still do. but the message is real. i had lunch the other day and was told there's a solution to

all of this. it's the only disease that people don't admit they have. >> four rehabs you mentioned. the last one at hazelton which is where robin williams went before his death. what worked the last time that didn't happen in the first three times? >> first time i didn't listen. helicopters all over the place and howard stern playing the voice mail. second time was about getting a suntan at betty ford. third time i didn't care. but the fourth time -- when i got there i was almost dead. i mean, i almost flatlined on my own property in nantucket. i drank a lot that day. and they said, look, you're not going to live. unless you change your life and take a good look at yourself, you're not going to live. that's what i did. >> in the midst of your drinking and you write openly about this. you left your wife. and you say you're haunted by the guilt. and your son was there too. broke his heart. you're haunted by that decision to this day.

>> it's shame and remorse. we still talk every day. we're raising a son together. but you're not yourself when you're at that stage of alcoholism. your brain is telling you to do something you don't really want to do. >> you write you dedicate this book to shawn your son, i think he's 27 now. to shawn, this is who your daddy is. managed to be a good father, you think? >> i'm a great father. and you know that. so are you. we talk about fatherhood a lot. my dad when he was drinking -- in fact, he was always drinking. he would take me to the bars and i would go with him. and one day he came to me and said this is who your daddy is. he was a great story teller. but shawn knows who his daddy is. he knows i'm sober and great now. >> it's good to see you back. >> thank you, matt. >> again, the book is "i'll be back right after this." you can read an excerpt on today.com. now to a controversy in one

school district in california pitting parents including supermodel cindy crawford against the government. maria shriver has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morni . >> good morning to you. cindy crawford's first job is being a mom to her teenage kids. when their school found dangerous chemicals inside a classroom, it started a debate around the country. what's the best way to keep students safe? do you feel it's unhealthy to be in this school? >> i don't feel 100% safe. >> reporter: it's the first day of school at malibu public high. but supermodel cindy crawford is keeping her kids home worried about a potential health threat inside the classrooms. >> i'm frustrated and disappointed at the way this has been handled. >> reporter: it started when routine soil tests at the school found elevated levels of pcb,

toxic chemicals often used in the window caulking of older schools. it can leech into dirt, dust, and air and can over time can cause cancer and immune system problems. >> pcb disrupted the function of hormones in our bodies. especially thyroid hormones. they can cause inability for children to perform well in school. >> reporter: when malibu teachers had worries about their health, they tested in ten random classrooms. four came back over the federal limit for pcbs. did you just assume the district and/or your school would say let us get right on that, we want to clear it up. don't worry. >> absolutely. >> reporter: and the district says it is. the school is planning to remove the caulking in those four rooms. and do periodic monitoring of

air and dust for pcbs in every classroom. it says so far tests show no elevated levels. but many parents feel that's not enough. >> the problem is for me is that they haven't tested the source. >> reporter: so the malibu school district says we did test the air and the dust in the other classrooms and we're good. we're going to take out the caulking in the four. everything else is safe. let's go to school. >> right. and i think that air testing is a great piece of the puzzle. unless they're testing every day, how do i know every day it's safe for my kid? >> reporter: some experts say while air and dust testing is a good way to determine pcb exposure, levels can vary week to week depending on conditions. >> in the short-term it may be appropriate to do monitoring, but in the long-term, schools need to eradicate the pcbs from these building materials. >> reporter: and it's not just in malibu. how to handle pcbs has become a

national controversy for schools. under federal law, they're not required to test for pcbs at all. >> why wasn't there follow-up testing done -- >> reporter: at a rally last week crawford offered to pay herself for all the caulk testing at malibu high. >> i look ten years down the line. what if my kid, god forbid, had a problem? how could i live with myself if i knew that it was a possibility and i still sent them to school there? >> reporter: in a statement the school says ensuring our students are safe and healthy is the first priority. and using federal epa standards, our schools are safe for students and employees. and the epa agreed. saying the district's plan address this human exposure pathway of greatest concern. namely air, dust, and soil. and until those tests show a problem, epa does not recommend additional testing of caulk. you have as of this morning

decided to take your kids out. are you out of this fight? >> absolutely not. this is not a malibu issue. this is really an issue in a lot of older schools. i just think the laws need to be changed. >> reporter: well, crawford and hundreds of other parents want congress to require all schools built from the '50s through the '70s to test for pcb. how they fix the problem is still up to debate. malibu schools says they will continue to monitor for pcbs and will take action if they find any problems come up. this story is far from over. >> thank you very much, maria. important story. >> no question about it. coming up, you're going to love her. jennifer hudson live in concert saying hi to her fans and getting ready to jam

yesterday at age 96. he was a longtime voice of "snl." 38 season, he missed only one season. lorne michaels said every year all the cast members couldn't wait to hear their names announced by him. he got his first job as a radio announcement in 1944. had a lifetime contract here at nbc. on november 22nd, 1963 he broke the news of jfk's assassination to viewers here in new york on wnbc. >> back in the day, staff announcers, they were literally in an announcer's lounge. announcers had to sit in the booth for eight hours almost at a time. and he was -- you know, there was a group of the best voices at nbc. he was our staff announcer at wnbc for live at 5:00 which was kind of cool. >> i loved your tweet yesterday.

you said 1983 my first day on air don pardo said my name in the live at 5:00 open, he smiled and said i punched it for you. yes! let's listen to it. we found it. >> from wnbc tv new york, this is live at 5:00 with al roker with weather. >> that was it. he was a consummate professional. >> i loved they had the announcer right there on set with all of you. >> an old rca microphone. he was a classic. he used to bike to work every day. he was just an iconic character. but so low key and such a gentleman. >> he truly was such a gentleman. in fact, my story -- actually my husband's story. i had just gotten my job at msnbc. my husband happened to be riding the ferry next to this sweet older gentleman and started talking to him. he was like i know this voice.

he mentioned we just moved here from connecticut. my wife just started msnbc. i work at nbc, what's your wife's name. he said wish your wife a wonderful time there. it's been a fantastic career. he said what's your name? i swear i know you. i'm don pardo. so he said your name in some way. >> people say the moment he says your name and you walk out on "snl," it's career stuff. we're thinking of him today. >> thank you, don pardo. >> absolutely. so last night i was out. i got to interview rory mcilroy. >> refere >> a late night. >> yeah we were hanging out. he's won three tournaments just in the last month including two majors. the last one at the pga championship. he talked about his recent success. there's been some talk. so he was engaged to caroline

stomach because glucose in food gives you mental energy. >> you have to eat a little bit all day long. >> a little bit of nutritious food. don't go for candy bars. you need to have protein and you must sleep. >> how much?
