-- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com nbc 10 breaking news. starting off with this breaking news this morning, a car crash as you see a violent crash in montgomery county. leaves one person dead, one in the hospital. we have a live report straight ahead. parts of northern california still assessing the damage this morning after the strongest earthquake to hit that region in 25 years. back here on our coast, a much different picture, very quiet this morning in cape may. a beautiful start to the day, 65 degrees, a fine day to head to the beach, the shore. we're in for a dry stretch of weather this week. this is nbc 10 news today on this monday. i'm chris cato. let's get to meteorologist bill henley who is redowning us after

a few days off. you had a fairly mixture of weather to enjoy your time off. >> i deed i did. the nice weather tonights. lots of sunshine is what we'll see, completely clear, 65 degrees at nbc 10. cool temperatures around the rest of the area this morning. readings in the 50s and 60s. 59 for allentown, pottstown and trenton. low 60s in delaware as well. sunshine will be bright and the temperatures climb starting off in the 60s, up to 70 degrees by 9:00. upper 70s at lunch time and climbing. we'll go through it hour by hour with the future weather when i come back. first, jillian mele has traffic. >> good morning, bill. it's early, it's a monday. let's start with good news. drivers in delaware, 495 at 12th street. over the weekend, 495 was re-opened in both directions between exits 2 and 3. traffic moving along just fine out there. 495, this is definite i a good news situation. the first workday we are seeing both sides re-opened on 495.

heading into new jersey, accident on 295, the northbound side as approach lawrence/columbus. we are following a serious accident in montgomery county in hatfield township, north broad street near cowpath road. take line street or walnut street to get around that. we're following that break news. jillian was showing us the traffic impact of a crash in montgomery county. one person dead after a violent car accident in hatfield township. katy zachry is live on scene. what can you show us so far this morning. >> reporter: let me show you the scene behind me on the 1600 block of broad street. this deadly crash happened just before 1:00 this morning. two people were in this vehicle. let's take a minute to talk to the extent to the damage of the vehicle. you're looking at just a mass of metal right now. and then across the yard, where this car came to a screeching halt against a pole.

you see a wheel and another part of the vehicle. but really just a very sad situation here. there are friends of the victim who have come to the scene who are very clearly distraught. two people were riding in this car when it was traveling on north broad street and they say that, you know, they're looking at a number of factors. speed may be a factor but it clearly lost control before slamming into a pole and then really just splitting into two pieces. one of the people in the car has died. the other person has very severe, critical injuries and has been air lifted to jefferson university hospital. there are a number of agencies out here. the fire department was called because there was an amount of fuel leakage on the road. that has since been cleaned up. here. they are not releasing any information on who has died in this crash because at this point they haven't notified the family members. i'm told that detectives are working on that right now.

they do anticipate that this stretch of broad street, the 1 00 block of north broad and hatfield township will closed off through the morning commute because of the severity of this crash. reporting live in hatfield township, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. aftershocks will likely be felt in northern california over the next week after yesterday's 6.0 magnitude earthquake. officials still trying to assess the damage there. nbc 10's tracy davidson live in our digital operationsen isser it, she's monitoring the reports coming in on the earthquake's aftermath. >> chris, residents were sent scrambling. there was the earthquake, shaking and then explosions. the lieutenant governor says the earthquake should motivate officials to make an earthquake early detection center. up to 100 houses right now are not safe to live in.

two adults and a child were critically hurt. hundreds more were treated for minor injuries. now, surveillance video at a sentence store captured the moment an earthquake hit. you can see a customer and worker run out of the store once the shaking starts. the quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks. >> we think there's probably over 50 or 60 aftershocks now. the largest one being a magnitude 3.6. we do not expect that there will be much larger aftershocks but we do think the aftershocks will continue for several weeks and they will rapidly decrease in their magnitude. >> the quake did cause damage to roads across the area. most of it was cracks or buckling. even though caution tape cordoned off the area, some kids in the neighborhood used it as a skateboarding ramp. again, california's

clothing and how to get rid of rape dna evidence. the victim is expected to testify. michael brown, the missouri teenager shot to death by a police officer will be laid to rest today. brown's death more than two weeks ago sparked nightly protests in the city of ferguson. many of those violent. at a peace festival in st. louis yesterday, michael brown sr. asked for peace on the day of his son's funeral. he said his family appreciates all the love and support from people in the community. >> all i want is peace while my son's being laid to rest. will you please, please take a die of silence so we can lay our son to rest. >> michael brown jr. was unarmed when he was shot and kill by that ferguson police officer, darren wilson. a grand jury will review evidence in the case and decide whether charges will be filed against the officer. an american journalist held hostage for nearly two years in

syria is free. 45-year-old peter curtis was held by an al qaeda-linked group in syria. the u.s. government was not involved in negotiating his release which came about through private efforts. his family says they were assured no ransom payment was made. curtis's release comes less than a week after islamicwaibh milit accused james foley on video. he said he was being held with 17 other hose tajs and that they were fed daily and given tea and coffee. the hostages passed the time he said by talking about movies, sports and trivia. foley was kidnapped in 2012 while covering the syrian uprising. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> skies are clear, the temperatures are coming down this morning. we're seeing readings this morning, they're in the 50s and 60s. a little on the cool side for this time of year when they

should be in the upper 60s and low 70s at this hour. we'll see bright sunshine, however. the numbers turn around. we tapped out at 83 degrees. that's about where we're heading again today. we're watching the tropics. 52 in allentown, northeast philadelphia, completely clear. 53 and 57 degrees currently. the numbers are still coming down. there's a nice clear view of cape may. beach avenue is completely dry this morning. satellite imagery, no organized systems in the region. and none expected, çtoo. the nearest clouds well to the west and western pennsylvania. those clouds are not producing any showers. stand by with the sunglasses for today. it will be a sun in, nice warm afternoon but the humidity stays low. we'll see how temperatures in the low to mid-80s today. > a look at tomorrow and beyond

news out of our trenton bureau, a disturbing story. trenton police say they have a man in custody who posed as a police officer and sexually assaulted a store clerk. g

gustavo garcia, authorities say is the man in this photo. he told the clerk he was a cop. he had a handgun and small radio on him. the man then forced the clerk in a bathroom and sexually assaulted her. a philadelphia man is under arrest for stabbing his father and another person. it happened just after 9:00 on summerdale avenue in the ronhurst section of the city. not long after that, a man was shot in the olney neighborhood. we're told the victim who was in his 40s is in critical condition this morning. so far, no one has been arrested. a man is in custody believed to be responsible for three separate shootings within a one-hour span that left three people dead. police said some of the victims, some on their way to church appeared to be randomly targeted in a los angeles suburb. a suspect was taken into custody last night after an hour's long

standoff with police. investigators are trying to determine if these shootings are connected to two others last week. family members are mourning the loss of a woman, her three churn and gram all killed in a fiery crash on long island. the victims just left a family gathering saturday night when their car went off the road, hit a tree and burst into flames. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash. a real mystery off the coast of south florida. the coast guard is looking for more bodies after several dead men were found floating in the ocean. seven bodies were initially spotted south of miami. the coast guard has only been able to find four of them so far. no boat wreckage has been locked and the victim's identities are unknown. a car crashed into the potomac river killing one person. a tow boat officer found that car yesterday afternoon. it's not clear when or why the car went into the water. a zookeeper in dallas is

recovering after being attacked by a lion. a lioness bit and scratched him. he used pepper spray to get the lion away from him. the lion was sedated and moved. the zookeeper was treated at the hospital and released. health officials confirm two people have bo do ied from ebola in the democratic republic of congo. the infects were from a different strain of the virus than the outbreak in west africa. officials in congo say protective measures will be expanded, including free health treatment. meantime, the first british citizen confirmed to have ebola is now back in the uk. the patient was evacuated from sierra leone. he had been working at aç clin. the patient will be treated in an isolation unit at a hospital in london. now to the crisis in the mideast. palestinian president mahmoud abbas wants the international community to set a deadline for

israel to end its occupation of land tured in the 1967 mideast war. this comes as fighting tonights between israel and hamas militants in the gaza strip. hundreds gathered to mourn some of the victims of israeli air strikes. reports say eight people were killed in gaza by the strikes. hamas militants continue to fire rocket into israel. at least ten were launched on sunday, one of which wounded three people. japan's prime minister visited hiroshima where at least 50 people are dead and dozens missing in the landslides there. rain is triggering more landslides in other parts of japan this week. authorities are considering setting up an early warning system. tropical storm cristobal blamed for one death. the u.s. national hurricane

center says crishobal may strengthen into a hurricane but it's expected to curve away from the east coast. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clear skies this morning. no clouds in the area. so the temperatures are coming down, 64 degrees in philadelphia. humidity is at 84%. that number will be coming down today. we have a north/northwesterly wind at 5 miles an hour. we will see plenty of sunshine, completely clear view, looking across the delaware from the adventure aquarium of center city. nice and clear through the day today. the flag for now is at rest here at nbc 10. we'll see a light breeze at times during the day. stronger wons will late until later in the week, at the earliest. radar screens shows nothing in the area. there's a possibility come early thursday morning we might see showers from a line that is moving through the midwest. it's just a chance. until then, we're nice and

clear. we are watching cristobal. it doesn't look like it's all that well organized. it's currently stationary but expected to move to the north. as chris mentioned it will be so stand by for sunshine today. the future weather showing clear skies through the day today and clear skies tonight. by tomorrow morning, we'll be looking at another sunny day. that line of showers that i showed you that's well off to the north and west, that could be moving in early wednesday morning to northwestern pennsylvania and arriving here by thursday morning. and just a few scattered showers are possible at that time. until then, stand by to enjoy sunshine. sunny and nice. the afternoon temperatures clip into the 80s this afternoon with those light winds out of the east to 10 miles an hour. >> sounds good, bill, thank you. 4:20 now. let's get a check of traffic. jillian mele will let us know of any other issues you may see on

the roads. >> good morning, chris. we have one more in montgomery county but the major roadways outside of philadelphia are looking pretty good. this is 76 out near route 202 in the king of prussia area. that's the eastbound side. both directions of 76 are very quiet right now. the blue route looks good. same situation onç 402 and 422. hatfield township, north broad street near cowpath road, we have an accident investigation going on. take line street to get around it. drivers in delaware, 495 completely open in both directions. this is a live look at 12th street, both directions completely opened. no more closures to report on 495. that was re-opened between exits 2 and 3. chris? philadelphia neighborhood marked the end of summer with a barbecue. why not? there was plenty of food and fun out there for families in

today, too. low humidity. enjoy. well, a philadelphia man was killed when he crashed his motorcycle on interstate 95 in delaware county. it happened just before 10:00 in ridley township. the 24-year-old was speeding when he crashed into a guardrail. he died at the scene. a boy in china survives being run over. we have to warn you, the video you're about to see could be disturbing. a boy plays in the street and then an suv runs right over him. the boy gets up in pain but runs to the other side of the street. he was treated for minor scratches on his legs and face. no serious injuries. no word yet on whether the driver may face any charges. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> clear skies over center city
