>> there might be one drop. don't let that fool you. we're going to be just fine. >> great showing coming up later. first let's get to today's top stories. severe storms continue to threaten large parts of the country. dylan does have more on that. >> the last unofficial weekend of summertime and we saw crazy storms through the midwest. the rain came down so hard it fell at about two inches per hour. when it comes down that fast, it caught a lot of people off guard. happened between 4:00 and 5:00 yesterday across new jersey and up into new york. we saw a lot of flooding on the roadways too. back in the midwest we had a big issue with hail and damaging wind gusts. look at these ominous clouds. we saw hail as big as tennis

balls. speaking of tennis balls, the u.s. open also had to be called early because the courts couldn't handle the water. crowds had to leave. they were strieing to squeegee the water off there. but it was too much in a short period of time. we will see things resume today but we do still have some storms through missouri right now. look at this heavy rainfall that's falling across missouri. we've got this line of storms producing the cloud to ground lightning. our most severe weather today is expected from michigan back in the eastern parts of kansas. that's where we could see today large hail and damaging wind gusts. it's going to be just as active as it was yesterday. more storms in the northeast too. >> we'll keep our eyes on it. >> thank you, dylan. president obama is under growing pressure to take the fight to isis in syria even from senior members of his own party. this comes amidst the word more

americans are joining the ranks of the extremist group. chris jansing has more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, willie. there is increasing concern about westerners including americans who have passports that would allow them to travel to syria for training and come back to the uk or u.s. to launch strikes. in fact, today the british parliament is considering ways to make it easier for them to seize the passports of people who are believed to be isis sympathizers as president obama weighs his options for targeting isis in syria. as the u.s. military ramps up air strikes against isis in iraq, president obama is facing growing bipartisan pressure this morning to take the fight to isis in syria. on "meet the press," it was said the president hasn't done enough to confront the isis front. >> i think i learned one thing about this president. and that is he's very cautious. maybe in this instance too cautious. >> reporter: a view echoed by

top republicans including senators john mccain and lindsay graham writing in "the new york times," continuing to confront isis in iraq but not in syria would be fighting with one hand tied behind our back. still some democrats say the president is right to proceed carefully. >> it is extremely urgent that you don't just rush in because the media is talking about it. >> reporter: it's not just the media. king abdullah warned over the weekend if isis is ignored i'm sure they'll reach europe in a month and america in another month. the white house says the president takes this seriously. the sense of urgency is growing as isis expands its reach aided by an influx of thousands of fighters holding western passports. then the announce of an arrest of a 16-year-old girl suspected of trying to reach syria to

fight. officials estimate 70 to 100 americans have joined isis and other extremist groups fearing they could return to the u.s. to launch attacks. >> i'm very concerned. because we don't know every single person that has an american passport that has gone and trained and learned how to fight. >> reporter: the threat of isis as well as the situation in ukraine will be the focus of meetings as the president travels to estonia and wales later this week. today, though, he'll be in milwaukee and make remarks at the annual labor fest celebration. >> thank you. michael leiter served in the obama administration. he's now an nbc news national security analyst. good morning. >> good morning. >> the one thing from king ab l abdullah raising the terror threat to severe.

>> there are westerners who have gone to syria and gotten training and can come back. as the house chairman said, it's hard for western countries to identify these people. so we don't see a specific front right now but we know there are westerners that have trained with these groups. identifying them and stopping them is very hard. >> no specific threat, but we have eric holder saying they're more frightening than anything i've seen. and chuck hagel said this is an imminent threat to every interest we have. doesn't that mean there's something out there approaching the united states? >> in my view there very much is. i believe the president is going to have to move towards an offensive step in syria. that doesn't mean there's a plot that we see right now but there

are all the signs. there's the safe haven, training, funding, and an intent to strike the west. we can wait awhile, but if we don't get on the offense, there's no way all of our defensive measures could catch all of the people that might come. >> and striking inside syria gets tricky. thank you very much. >> thanks, willie. this morning nascar superstar tony stewart is trying to move on after a disappointing return to racing. it was his first time competing since he struck and killed a fellow driver three weeks ago. but the race did not go as planned. and nbc's gabe gutierrez is at the motor speedway in hampton, georgia. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. stewart ended up slamming into the wall on this track twice. he ended up finishing 41st out of 43 drivers and barely making it through half the race. >> whoa, into the wall. stewart looked like contact from kyle busch.

>> reporter: overnight sparks flew as tony stewart was knocked off track. the nascar legend tells his team -- >> sorry, guys. you deserve better than this. >> reporter: we were there as he left his garage in a heavy damaged car beyond repair. >> disappointed to not finish the race but in the context of everything that's gone on, it was a race that he wasn't able to finish. >> reporter: it was stewart's first race since he struck and killed a fellow driver kevin ward jr. at a dirt track in upstate new york three weeks ago. ward had climbed out and stepped onto the track. a fan posted it on youtube. >> this has been one of the toughest tragedies i've had to deal with. >> reporter: stewart spoke publicly about it for the first time friday. the sheriff says the crash investigation will take at least two more weeks. online some critics bashed stewart for returning so soon. one saying can't believe he's

allowed to drive. but many fans here are handing by him even as his return ended with a torn up tire and a 41st place finish. >> we were sad. we were hoping he'd get a good race in. >> sorry he wasn't able to make a comeback. a lot of his fans want him back. that's a tough one. >> reporter: stewart is now looking to next week. he would have to win next saturday's race in richmond, virginia, to even have a shot at this year's championship. >> all right. gabe gutierrez at the atlanta motor speedway. by the way, beautiful shot there, that sunrise. now to another story getting attention this morning. dozens of photos of jennifer lawrence in the nude and more than 100 other celebs in compromising positions hit the internet sunday in a massive hacking scandal. betty nguyen has more on this story. >> reporter: good morning. racy pictures sent social media

into a frenzy. a master list according to be a list of all the stars had dozens of rains like rihanna, jennifer lawrence, and mary kate olsen. nbc news will not show any of the leaked images. late sunday a representative for jennifer lawrence appears to confirm the photos were of the star saying, this is a flagrant violation of privacy. the authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of jennifer lawrence. lawrence is just one of about 100 celebrities targeted in the unprecedented attack. the pictures first posted on the online message board where a hacker also claimed to have nude and semi-nude photos of rihanna, supermodel kate upton, hope solo, and kirsten dunst, lea michelle, and mary elizabeth winston. according to several reports, the hacker allegedly obtained

the pictures through a cloud leak. >> these are federal crimes and state crimes. we have wire fraud, computer fraud, and those crimes attach a lot of years in jail. >> reporter: winston responded to the hack on twitter. saying, to those of you looking at photos i took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel good about yourselves. i can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this. feeling for everyone who got hacked. while victoria justice denied that any of the photos are of her tweet, these so-called nudes of me are fake, people. let me nip this in the bud. back in 2012 a man was sentenced to ten years in prison for hacking into the private accounts of scarlett johansson

and mila kunis and posting their photos online. >> thanks very much. >> you were saying about the cloud, it's hard to know what's up there in the cloud. >> it's just floating around in space. >> they can hack that security system. it's got to be nearly impossible. >> i've got a picture of me and my dog. nothing interesting. >> kate snow is here now with a check of the rest of the news stories. >> a militia has entered a embassy. bill neeley is in london this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. american diplomats left tripoli weeks ago but their homes are now in the hands of militia men.

the main embassy remains secure for now. but this is the first time that a u.s. facility has been overrun. in a country free falling into chaos, militia fighters celebrate their takeover of an american diplomatic compound. nbc news can't authenticate this video but the u.s. ambassador to libya says it shows an annex. the main homes abandoned quickly last month. all u.s. staff evacuated as fighting intensified. the government who controls are militias. thick takeover, an uncomfortable we minder of the killing of chris stevens and three other americans almost two years ago. tripoli is now a deadly battle ground. for weeks militias have vied for

control. enflamed further by air strikes on libya from gulf states and egypt. libya is in tur moil, an american compound once again overrun, rival governments, hundreds of militias, and another foreign policy headache. and it's just one headache among so many for the obama administration. syria, iraq, not to mention ukraine. the president's foreign policy under fire. his handling of libya always contentious and now still an issue. >> bill neeley in london this morning. thanks. it was a chaotic day at an airport on monday. it started sunday afternoon when an alaskan airlines flight from seattle to atlanta made an unscheduled stop in kansas city because of an unruly passenger. the man was us courted off the plane. and then sunday night a terminal inside the airport was evacuated

due to a bomb threat. nothing was found. two teenagers were rushed to a texas hospital sunday night after falling from a carnival right. it happened in el paso. one of the teens suffered serious injuries. they used a ladder to reach others stranded in the air. the cause of the accident is under investigation. and lesson learned for a drone pilot. you can see it going up high above a lake, but at one point the drone loses battery power and starts coming back to the earth. the guy on shore is starting to panic. first he goes for the boat. then he just empties his pockets and runs into the water just in time to make the catch. >> that's a really shallow lake. >> good thing the got to it. >> we had one of those with family photos recently.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this where joan rivers' family has been keeping vigil over this holiday weekend. there's no new update on her condition, but there are new worries. >> melissa, how is your mother? >> reporter: after rushing to her mother's bedside last week, melissa rivers has stayed mostly quiet releasing another short statement sunday saying only thank you for your continued love and support. we are keeping our fingers crossed. joan rivers was rushed to mt. sinai hospital after going into cardiac and respiratory arrest thursday. it is unclear how long rivers may have gone without oxygen but tmz is reporting the 81-year-old is on life support. >> am i the only one that thinks this is [ bleep ]? >> reporter: rivers is beloved by many. from celebrities like seth rogan who tweeted, i really need joan rivers to be okay.

to "fashion police" co-host kelly osborn. for the first time i got down on my knees and prayed tonight. i encourage you to do the same for joan rivers my grandma. even workers at a restaurant she frequented who say she was just here wednesday night. >> she walked by. very sweet. >> reporter: but hours later rivers ended up here. the start of a now four-day vigil. her family by her side as fans and media wait for any word. rivers is described as resting comfortably. her former writing partner told reporters outside the hospital here over the weekend that he was with her at that dinner on wednesday night and in true joan rivers form, she joked about going in for that surgery. >> all right. kristen dahlgren, thanks so much. a lot of people rooting this morning for joan rivers. we include ourselves in that. sending our best to her and her family. meanwhile, carson daly is

flooding, and damage. one boy was struck by lightning and killed. and militia groups have secured the u.s. embassy and residential compound there. video surfaced of men appearing to have a pool party. the state department is seeking additional details and says the situation on the ground remains fluid. and the show boat which opened for 27 years is the first of three atlantic city casino closures. the department of labor and workforce development is working to help laid off casino workers find new jobs. that's a lot of people. and coming up, is this the future of policing? hundreds of police departments have started to buy body cameras for their officers but is it always a good idea?

we want to begin this half hour with a criminal investigation involving a usc football player. he made up a story about being a hero and now los angeles police are questioning him in connection with a possible crime. katy tur joins us with the latest on these twists and turns in the case. >> reporter: good morning. this was supposed to be the best time of usc josh shaw's life. captain of the football team, college degree in hand, ready to show off his talents for the nfl. but now shaw is under a cloud of suspicion. his future anything but clear. while josh shaw's teammates at usc are already making a lot of noise in their bid for a national championship, the team's star quarterback is being hit with a suspension after lying to coaches. it started last week when he said he sprained both his ankles

while trying to save his nephew. then his name turned up at a disturbance at his girlfriend's home that same night 60 miles away. >> this whole thing started on a radio call about a screaming woman. our officers responded and ultimately took a burglary report that night. >> reporter: witnesses report seeing a man matching shaw's description scaling down the apartment balcony before running away. >> there's been an allegation made there was possibly a domestic violence incident that occurred. >> reporter: shaw has admitted to lying how he injured his ankles but after two interviews with police he has hired a criminal defense attorney known for representing attorneys like snoop dogg and rihanna. >> the reality is there's no domestic violence. there's no crime whatsoever. >> reporter: sources tell nbc news police believe shaw got into a heated argument with his girlfriend but she had no visible injuries and the couple is no longer cooperating. >> these are really difficult cases for the prosecution to put

together especially when you have an uncooperative victim. >> reporter: detectives say it could take a hail mary. >> it's a long climb back. >> reporter: ultimately the district attorney's office will decide whether criminal charges are warranted in this case. but with roger goodell announcing tougher penalties for domestic violence, the stakes couldn't be higher for shaw's future. let's get a check of weather now from dylan. >> august was a nice month. now ironically we're getting into september and we're looking at some of our warmest temperatures so far. it's hot, humid, and we've got an area of high pressure pumping in the heat and humidity. want to show you just how warm it's going to be across parts of texas today where temperatures should get well into the prip

triple digits. we'll top out in 90 in new york city. stay in the mid-90s through the carolinas. out west, temperatures will start cooling off a little bit. but on wednesday in good morning. a steamy start after thunderstorms and showers last night. high 80s to low 90s for the highs. a chance for thundershowers today. the shower threat back tomorrow. 94 for tuesday afternoon. the showers take a break, but the heat stays with us wednesday, thursday and into the weekend with more showers and thunderstorms possible saturday into sunday. >> and that's your latest forecast. >> thanks a lot. police officers in ferguson, missouri, have begun wearing body cameras following the fatal shooting of unarmed teen michael brown. the act is gaining support across the country.

and as gabe gutierrez reports, some are calling it the future of policing. >> reporter: from the police dash cam, takedown seems to come out of nowhere. but from other angle, one from a body camera a much clearer picture of what led to the arrest. >> you get to see what this officer saw. the guy wheeled around and hit him in the face. >> reporter: the police department started using body cameras nine months ago. >> it helps keep the officers accountable and helps the citizens feel safe. >> reporter: it's a department policy for the officers to turn on the camera every time they approach a citizen. this is the view from that camera. the officers say they turn it on at least a dozen times a day. so far at least 1200 u.s. law enforcement agencies have bought body cameras. there's now a renewed push for them after the shooting in ferguson, missouri. by next year denver hopes to

equip its 800 officers. >> i think citizens have a right to know what the officers are doing. >> reporter: last year body cam video from daytona beach, florida, show sd what led to officers to fire at a man holding a knife to a woman's neck. and this shows a woman fleeing from officers in north carolina. a camera captured a teenager throwing a knife at police. >> these cameras are the future of policing. >> reporter: there are some concerns involving privacy and how these videos can be used in court. >> just because we put cameras on officers nowadays doesn't mean we're going to capture everything. >> reporter: but to far many are calling it a win/win. >> documentation, accountability, transparency is part of what we do now. and it should be. >> reporter: if a picture's worth a thousand words, to them these images are priceless. gabe gutierrez, nbc news. >> thanks a lot. those cameras certainly tell the

♪ here's a question. paper or plastic? that familiar question is apparently facing extinction in california which could make history this month by becoming the first state to ban plastic bags. hallie jackson is live in los angeles. hallie, good morning. >> good morning, natalie. if this new california law goes into effect, you still have the option of paper or the reusable bags. but you may have to fork over another dollar or two to carry home your groceries. this california grocery store sill offers plastic bags for those who forget their own. >> i have some in my car and some hanging on my front door and yet i'm here with the plastic bags. >> reporter: but soon that option may be shelved for good. forcing shoppers who don't bring a bag and want one to buy one and pay at least 10 cents for the paper or reusable kind.

>> you spend enough money in stores. now we've got to bring our own bags. >> reporter: california lawmakers just approved a bill to get rid of single use plastic bags at grocery stores and pharmacies starting next summer if the governor signs it into law. >> i think it's a win/win/win. good for the business, good for the economy, good for the environment. >> reporter: massachusetts and washington are also consider similar plans. and five other states are looking at taxes or fees anywhere from 1 to 15 cents per bag. >> after years and years and years of them trying to get more people to recycle plastic bags, the recycling rate is still only at like 5%. >> reporter: but with ads like these, the plastic bag industry has been lobbying hard against the ban. >> these manufacturers will lose their jobs. there's no question about it. >> reporter: and not all californians are ready for the rise of the reusable bag. >> some of them look disgusting.

when we talk about america's wounded warriors it's often a great story of strength and struggle. four iraq vets all amputees are sharing a different story about life after war. erica hill is here with a beautiful story. >> good morning. this is a fantastic story. when you talk with these four vets you can't help but smile because their joy over a shared new beginning is infectious and in many ways it's also miraculous. it's a moment and a milestone

these wounded warriors weren't convinced they'd ever see. >> to think of where we've all come from and ten years later we're all having children of our own, i think it's a phenomenal story. >> reporter: ten years ago melissa stopwell was a soldier in iraq out for a routine patrol when a roadside bomb hit her humvee. she became the first female to lose a limb in operation iraqi freedom. by the end of 2004, she was one of five female amputees recovering at walter reed including army captain tammy duckworth now an illinois congressman who lost both her legs. >> and by the time i woke up my husband said all four women who were amputees before you were here to tell you everything was going to be fine. >> reporter: it was in those moments that their sister hood was born. one that today is taking on new meaning as four of them become mothers. >> i am so thrilled i'm going to

be a mother here in four months. >> it's the first time the illinois representative has talked about her pregnancy on camera. >> so we went through many cycles and all the different varieties of ivf. being in the job that i have it was hard to keep it very quiet. >> caller: duckworth's baby girl is due in early december. right behind melissa stopwell's little boy in late november. dawn's son is now four months old. and danielle green byrd welcomed daniel just ten days ago. each new life a reminder of how far these soldiers have come. >> we share a special bond. then being able to share the war stories of mother hood or pregnancy, that's a new chapter for us. >> reporter: with the thought of mother hood and families, was it something you allowed yourself to think about or was there a time i you thought it was out for you?

>> we wondered if it would be possible to have children. learned you can still have children and provide. but i think we have to find ourselves first. >> reporter: getting to this point hasn't been easy. but the bond they share has made the journey far less lonely. >> these women were there for me at the band of sisters when i went through the greatest pain, the greatest trauma in my life. and now we get to be together for the time of greatest joy. >> reporter: a joy they once barely dreamed of that now offers new hope to so many. and this band of mothers as they've now taken to calling themselves is already planning their first play date. dawn told us what she's looking forward to is teaching her sown about the incredible strength each of these women had and how they all came together. they're incredible. >> incredible women. >> what a group. all the men and women who serve in our military are exceptional.

may be on the lookout for a few scattered showers and the rest of the area as the temperatures climb could not only see showers but pop-up thunderstorms today. already 79 degrees in wildwood and middle 70s in philadelphia heading towards 90 this afternoon. a bucks county high school will be open today to provide grief counseling after three students were killed in a crash in northeastern pennsylvania. an suv overturned saturday morning near the poconos. the boys were incoming sophomore in holland. grief counselors will be at the high school this afternoon for students and their families. classes will begin tomorrow as scheduled. all athletes. three other students were hurt in the crash, they have not been identified. police are looking for the person who pulled the trigger in a deadly shooting in southwest philadelphia. this happened around 10:30 last night near 60th and almond. police say the victim was hit several times in the chest, died a short time later. they have not released the

temperatures have been climbing. 79 in wildwood and 78 in northeast philly andp 7 in wilmington. into the middle 80s at the shore. keep an eye on the sky for a chance of shower and just a slight chance of a thunderstorm. a bucks county high school will be open to provide counseling after three students were killed in a crash in northeastern pennsylvania. an suv with six people inside overturned early saturday morning in paupack wain county. three kids died and three were hurt. school officials say the boys who died were incoming sophomores at council rock high school. grief counselors will be at the school from 1:00 to 4:00 this afternoon for students and their families. classes will begin tomorrow as scheduled. the three victims shamus digney, colin keffer and ryan lesher and three others not identified. two other philadelphia businesses assessing the damage after a fire this morning. this happened at 5:00 this
