from nbc news world headquarters in new york, this "nbc nightly news" with brian williams. i'm kate snow. brian will be back tomorrow. as we return from the long weekend, a growing number of international hot spots are demanding attention tonight from iraq and syria to libya and ukraine. this weekend there were dire warnings about the power and reach of the extremist group isis with one world leader saying it won't be long before they reach american soil. today, the british prime minister called for measures to stop the flow of new recruits to that group. while the u.s. military continues its campaign to weaken isis, some democrats are criticizing the obama administration for not doing enough. we begin tonight with our senior white house correspondent chris jansing. chris, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, kate. pressure is building for president obama to take quick decisive action against isis. a key concern, the more than 100

americans who have gone to syria to fight with isis and other extremist groups. >> i'm not asking for the moon. i just want a good deal for american workers. >> reporter: a fired up president obama with a get out the vote message at a labor day celebration in milwaukee, a rare respite from escalating concerning over the threat of isis. and the escalating bipartisan pressure to take action soon. >> this is a vicious, vicious movement. and it has to be confronted. >> reporter: while the president talked up the economy, in great britain where the terror alert is at its highest level in five years. >> as to speak passports are not an automatic right -- >> reporter: prime minister david cameron with fears of a western citizen radicalize then head to iraq or syria to fight and train. he's proposing new rules for seizing the passports of suspected militants. >> it is abhorrent that people who declare allegiance elsewhere are able to return to the united

kingdom and pose a threat to our national security. >> reporter: king abdullah of saudi arabia warned over the weekend if isis -- french officials this weekend arrested a 16-year-old girl trying to board a plane to turkey allegedly to join isis. u.s. officials now estimate more than 100 americans have already joined the ranks of isis and other extremist groups. fewer than many european countries, but enough to trigger alarm bells. >> i'm very concerned. because we don't know every single person that has an american passport that has gone and trained and learned how to fight. >> reporter: white house officials caution there is no intelligence suggesting an imminent threat here. even as isis ratchets up with an effective propaganda campaign releasing this video of a takeover of a syrian air base. and the military battle against isis in iraq is expanding. bombs were dropped by u.s. warplanes breaking a week-long

siege for 15,000 people. u.s. jets with humanitarian air drops along with drops from australia, france and the uk. later this week the president will work to get more countries on board to challenge the isis threat at the nato summit in wales. now, nato summits of late have been sleepy affairs. one secretary is known to bring along crossword puzzles. but not this year. the president will be looking to bring a coalition to deal with isis. >> chris jansing at the white house tonight. and ukraine is where we turn next. to talk about russia's apparent invasion of that country, vladimir putin himself seems to be upping the ante to see how far he can go to keep a grip on ukraine without triggering a wider conflict. nbc's kooer simmons reports tonight from eastern ukraine. >> reporter: four months of bitter fighting in this corner of europe, now dangerously close

to what ukraine's president calls the point of no return. full scale war because of what amounts to a russian invasion. >> thousands of fallen troops and hundreds of foreign tanks now on the territory of ukraine. >> reporter: ukraine's forces have been winning breaking the grip of pro-russian rebels in eastern ukraine. but now with russian help the rebels are pushing back across a broad front. the caches and the tough talk of more -- >> completely unjustified and unaccepted. russia appears to be trying to force ukraine to abandon its democratic choices at the barrel of a gun. >> reporter: but so far russian president vladimir putin remains unmoved. talking of statehood for eastern ukraine. voicing support for the rebels.

even denying that his forces are on ukrainian soil though satellite pictures released by nato appear to show just that. but on the ground here war's the reality. two and a half thousand people have been killed so far and many fear ukraine is on the brink of far more bloodshed. trying to prevent more conflict, the west has avoided calling for action world leaders hoping to diffuse this crisis before it spirals out of control. keir simmons, nbc news, eastern ukraine. it was a surprising new video that went viral over the weekend putting libya back on the radar. it shows rebels who stormed part of the u.s. embassy compound in tripoli. and it comes nearly two years after islamic militants launched a deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. another reminder that libya is spiraling out of control. the story tonight from nbc's bill neally. >> reporter: in a country

freefalling into chaos, libyan gunmen celebrate. they've just taken an american diplomatic compound, so they take to the swimming pool. a symbolic moment they want the world to see. nbc news can't authenticate this video, but the u.s. ambassador to libya says it appears to show a residential annex. the homes like the main embassy compound were abandoned quickly last month. all u.s. staff safely evacuated as fighting intensified. the gunmen control the annex, the main u.s. embassy nearby, says the ambassador, remains secure. for now. but these men are allies to islamist militias. this takeover an uncomfortable reminder of the killing of ambassador chris stevens and three other americans in benghazi almost two years ago. tripoli is now a deadly battleground. the government has fled

conceding yesterday it's lost control of the capital to militias. the airport a symbol of a country in crisis. a country now further enflamed by air strikes from gulf states and egypt. protests are growing. libya is in turmoil. rival governments, hundreds of militias and for the second time in two years an american compound overrun. another foreign policy headache for washington is looming in libya. bill neely, nbc news, london. back here at home a big story this labor day weekend continues to be the weather. it's been a washout for millions from the midwest to the northeast. severe storms downed trees and knocked out power to thousands. torrential downpours and in some areas hail, even confirmed tornadoes in massachusetts and michigan. tonight, the threat continues and weather channel meteorologist kelly cass joins us with more. good evening, kelly. >> good evening, kate. that was a confirmed tornado near worcester, mass, yesterday. today it was near gaylord,

michigan, causing damage in the northern part of that state. still on look out for detroit, cincinnati, st. louis and springfield. the tornado threat is still there although diminishing as we go through the overnight hours. the main threat will be damaging winds and large hail. you may have noticed the warmth and the humidity has been on the increase on this labor day across the east coast. that will help to fuel showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be severe as we head back to work tomorrow. so watch that travel across the new york state throughway down through pittsburgh, charleston, west virginia, the main threat will be damaging winds as well as large hail. but we can't rule out the possibility of isolated tornadoes. this just in, we have brand-new tropical depression just formed in the southern gulf of mexico. good news, it's not going to impact the united states. it's expected to head westward into mexico. >> kelly cass tonight. thanks. the fallout continues after a hacking attack involving some very personal intimate photographs of celebrities including oscar winner jennifer lawrence. they were posted online for all the world to see.

it's not just an embarrassing breach of privacy for the stars who were exposed, it's also highlighting the risks for anyone who takes pictures on a phone. we get our report tonight from nbc's jacob ras ccon in los angeles. >> reporter: jennifer lawrence is one of the biggest names in hollywood. but overnight the young oscar winner took center stage for a different reason after dozens of nude and risque photos of the actress appeared on an anonymous online image sharing site. with them similar photos reporting to show kate upton, rihanna and arianna grande. and more than 100 other famous women in what many call the biggest celebrity hacking ever. it's a scenario like the one shown in the comedy "sex tape" in which a video goes viral. >> it went up to the. >> you can't get it down from the cloud? >> reporter: what's alarming many is how the identified

hacker claims he got the pictures, through the apple icloud, which use servers like these to backup the digital lives of hundreds of millions of people. we caught up with former federal cyber crime prosecutor mark rash at a computer security conference today in sweden. >> by storing it on the cloud it becomes a one-stop shop for hackers. hackers only have to break in one place to get everybody's data. if the celebrities are vulnerable, it means that everybody is vulnerable on the cloud. >> reporter: late today the fbi said it was aware of the issue and looking into it while apple said, we take user privacy very seriously and are actively investigating this report. pub llyists confirm saying flay vant violations of privacy. some celebrities say the photos of her are fake. while actress mary elizabeth winceton tweeted to those of you looking at photos i took with my

big worries on the beach tonight in atlantic city. a sad sight this labor day as the revel casino began the process of shutting its doors after just two years in business. that's in addition to the show boat which shut down yesterday, and trump plaza which is scheduled to close in a couple of weeks. at least three atlantic city resorts will go bust this year as the city's gambling market continues to struggle against competitors in other states as well as online gambling. for the first time since the tragedy on the racetrack ended with the death of a fellow driver, tony stewart was back in action last night in georgia. a rough ride that has some analysts wondering if it was too much too soon. stewart slammed into the wall twice. sparks flying the second time. his damaged car undrivable. it comes weeks after stewart's car struck and killed 20-year-old kevin ward jr. at a dirt track race in upstate new york. ward got out of the car and walked on to the track. that incident remains under investigation. and a big celebration on the

our final story tonight as promised is about a new superhero who's making a difference in the lives of children living with autism. using his special powers while encouraging them to do the same. we get our report from nbc's hallie jackson. >> reporter: brian rasmussen loves to draw. mostly comic strips. he's inspired by a new comic book featuring a superhero named michael who is learning to live with a special power, autism. >> in his mind he's thinking in the thought bubbles, will they think less of me because i have autism. >> reporter: do you ever think the stuff that michael thinks? >> sometimes i do. i think do i act weird, do i talk different than everybody else? >> reporter: people with autism sometimes struggle to connect.
