in just two hours, revel casino will officially close. we're live as the clock winds down on a $2 billion blunder. as the president prepares to go overseas, word overnight that the u.s. has launched another military operation targeting islamic militants. and a live look outside this morning. boathouse row on the river. 78 degrees. boy, the calendar may say september, but it feels a lot like the middle of summer out there. very steamy this morning as you step outdoors. good morning. this is nbc 10 news on this tuesday. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley. bill, it's really muggy this

morning. >> really muggy. 78 degrees. that's 13 degrees above the normal low temperature this time of year. it's a very warm one. we were near the 90-degree mark yesterday. it's going to be a hotter day today. just a little bit of a southerly breeze blowing. that's going to bring in additional humidity and keep the heat on. we've been watching the radar screen. some thunderstorm activity overnight moved through delaware. and now it is an isolated shower in gloucester county moving through the glassboro area. just some light showers. those are dying down. the shower threat is going to be diminishing this morning. most of the morning and early this afternoon we'll be clear of any showers. look at that, 78 northeast philadelphia. wilmington, 76 and 74 in trenten. a muggy and warm start. 77 at 7:00. hazy sun and muggy at 9:00. 90 by lunchtime and still climbing. go through the forecast with the future weather hour by hour when i come back.

first jillian mele has your traffic. >> good tuesday morning. if you're heading out on 76, everything is quiet. this is what it looks like near spring garden street. that's eastbound. drive times on 76 look great both ways between the blue and the vine. it will take about 14 minutes now. minor problem here, a disabled vehicle, barr harbor drive at bullock. like the blue right, 422 all looking good right now. even in the lehigh valley, where 22 is quiet near airport road. keep in mind we do have the normal construction on the northeast extension. chris. another atlantic city casino is about to close this morning. this one, the most costly to build and the fastest to fold. revel casino will shut down in less than two hours. there's our countdown clock. this comes just a day after the revel hotel closed its doors. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in atlantic city near that casino. jesse, what's happening now? >> reporter: well, chris, i just ran inside to survey the scene.

it is a very interesting scene, i will say. sitting inside the casino portion is almost completely empty. just a few people inside gambling. but there are longtime loyal customers sitting side by side, longtime staffers who helped open this property. they are gambling and commiserating as the clock ticks down to when the doors will shut. take a look at our video yesterday. crews removed the name that's been linked to billions in losses. revel hotel closed. and at 6:00 this morning the casino will follow suit. workers here becoming part of the thousands of casino employees out of work with the closure of revel, showboat and the atlantic club, and soon trump plaza. coming up in the next 30 minutes, we'll hear from some of the workers who have been affected. and we are working to get some of the people who are inside right now both employees and customers who are sitting together, commiserating, we're working to get them to come outside and talk to us. we hope to have that later for you this morning. live in atlantic city, jesse

gary, nbc 10 news. >> you mentioned the other closures. take a look at this map we created just to show you the concentration of the casinos closing. once revel shuts its doors today, trump plaza will be the next casino to shutter on september 16th. showboat closed on sunday. the atlantic club, as you'll recall, closed back in january. now, in all after those closures, more than 8,000 people have lost their jobs. stay with nbc 10 for continuing coverage of the atlantic city casino crisis. logon to nbc10.com for a look at the impact those shutdowns have had on the atlantic city economy. happening now, a buss county high school. nbc 10's tracy davidson is live with more. >> the accident happened over the weekend near the poconos. here are the victims. the three teens were about to enter their sophomore room at castle rock high school south. yesterday hundreds of students and staff gathered at the school to mourn the loss of these

student athletes. grief counselors were made available as well. >> crying, just very sad. tears everywhere. no one really wanted to talk about it. >> there are no words to speak the loss. and as a school community, we just reach out to the parents and let them know that we're there for them and that we're horribly affected by the loss of these three great kids. >> school leaders say the teens played soccer, lacrosse and basketball. we did get a statement from ryan le lesher's family that says we are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. ryan was a truly special young man and we are deeply devastated by his loss. our hearts and prayers go out to the digney and kefer families. grief counselors will be at the school today and a vigil is planned to start at 5:00. live in the digital operations center, tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. and another school is grieving as well. a south jersey school will offer help to students. their classmate is on life support after a crash over the

weekend. 14-year-old ashlynn cook was critically hurt saturday morning on route 40 in hamilton township. she and four soccer teammates were on their way to a charity tournament when their car was hit by a truck that crossed the centerline. today they'll provide an assembly. counselors will be available there. school starts at mainland on thursday. a developing story this morning. u.s. forces have targeted islamic extremists in somalia. according to officials, a must military drone launched on at least two vehicles. shortly after militants attacked a government site in mogadishu. they think they were trying to free other rebels being held inside that government building. a bomb was detonated, but they did not reach the underground cells where the rebels are being held. and president obama is preparing to leave on a trip overseas aimed at rallying support for ukraine and against isis. his first stop is estonia.

a former soviet state worried about becoming the next target of russian aggression. while there, mr. obama will also meet with the leaders of latvia and lithuania. they're also concerned about the growing russian threat. the president will attend a nato summit later this week in wales where one of the agenda items will be how to deal with the terror group isis in iraq and syria. today testing begins on an experimental vaccine for the ebola virus. the national institutes of health will test 20 adults to see if their immune systems respond to that virus. the results will not be known until the end of the year. the vaccine was developed by the nih and glaxo smith kline. tests for other ebola vaccines will happen this fall. an outbreak has killed more than 1500 people in west africa. happening today in philadelphia, three teachers accused in a cheating scandal are expected in court for a preliminary hearing. vicente, hughes and sloane are among the educators facing charges. they're accused of helping

students cheat on state tests from 2009 to 2011. authorities say after that cheating stopped, the students' scores dropped dramatically. thousand to some news from our delaware bureau. governor jack markell will push this week for seniors in high schools who continue their education and training beyond graduation. he's going to visit william penn high and concord high school in new castle county this morning to let students know what resources and programs are available. the governor will visit four other schools later this week. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. with meteorologist bill henley. >> it is a steamy start this morning. some very high humidity starting things off. and the humidity will stay with us as the temperatures climb. that's going to be a hot afternoon. possibly the hottest day of the week. and this may very well be the hottest week of the entire year. heat, humidity, storms later today. firing up late this afternoon and a possibility this evening as well. 73 degrees right now. clear skies in reading.

a few scattered clouds in philadelphia. 77. down one degree in the last hour. 73 right now in cape may. clearer view. this is looking down towards akins oval this morning which is going to be dry this morning and early this afternoon. but it's later this afternoon when we could see some thunderstorm activity roll down the steps of the museum of art. you see some clouds. that's a thunderstorm that rolled through delaware. now producing just a few raindrops, scattered raindrops, in delaware. but the threat of more thunderstorms is going to stay with us. this is part of the same system that's rolling through the midwest right now with high humidity abounding. the future showers showing really quiet this morning. but as we go into the noontime hour, that's when we hit the 90-degree mark. and the temperatures continue to climb. and then late this afternoon, 4:00, still pretty quiet. look what happens after that. as we head into the early evening hours, some heavy downpours into chester county. moving towards the philadelphia area as well. and possibly even into early tomorrow morning. so the forecast for today is

back-to-school fair and block party. the event featured food and music and also provided students 100 backpacks filled with school supplies. and up next, nbc 10's katie zachary is live where she's helping students and parents get ready for this new school year. katie? >> reporter: hi, chris. we are talking about school supplies this morning. coming up, you might be surprised to learn what supplies are on students' back-to-school lists. it goes beyond just pens and paper. and a little later, personal pictures, the nude celebrity photo scandal that now has the attention of the fbi.

aquarium. it is a steam bath this morning as you step outside, you will feel the weather. meteorologist bill henley calling for highs around 93, possibly our hottest day of the week. he's back in a few minutes to let us know when our best chance of thunderstorms will occur. and now to the casino crisis. more on that. and this is a live picture of the revel casino in atlantic city. a little more than two years after it opened to the tune of $2.4 billion, it's prepared to shut its doors. in less than two hours, that gaming floor will be shut down. the hotel already closed yesterday. now this follows the closures of the showboat, the atlantic club and then trump plaza scheduled to close on september 16th. changing economy in atlantic city. in less than a week, students in the philadelphia school district will head back to school. they'll be returning with more than just the basic supplies in their backpacks, that's for sure. nbc 10's katie zachary live for us with a look at what these students are facing heading into

this new school year in philadelphia. katie? >> reporter: hi, chris. here in philadelphia, teachers head back to the classroom today. students follow next week. and as i've learned after talking to teachers, many of them are relying on their students to bring more than just pens and paper. the basic supplies. >> i spent a lot of money. last year i probably spent maybe like $700 to $1,000 on materials. >> reporter: and this philadelphia middle school teacher says she expects to pay at least that again this year. she says her students have been encouraged by their administration to include hand sanitizers, soap and paper towels on students' school supply list this year. a far cry from the short list of pencils, folders and notebooks kids have been responsible for in the past. teachers say the budget crisis the district is facing once again this year is to blame. and they don't like having to pass down the burden to students. >> the public school, students, i think it should be free. i think the students should have

to school and bring soap and paper towels. those are necessities they should worry about at home, not at school. >> reporter: of course for some students and parents, covering the cost of additional school supplies is a financial hardship. i'm working on that angle for 5:15. we'll see you in about an hour. reporting live, katie zachary, nbc 10 news. this morning philadelphia police are trying to figure out who vandalized nearly a dozen cars. it happened sometime between sunday night and yesterday morning on the 5200 block of "f" street in longcrest. police say the vandals used a sharp object to crack ten windshields. residents say this isn't the first time something like this has happened. they're pushing for more frequent police patrols in that neighborhood. in delaware county, police are trying to figure out what caused this deadly crash. it happened just before 9:00 last night on south road in bethel township. police tell us the driver was the only person in the car. it went off the road, slammed into a tree. the victim's name has not been released. and police in texas say speed was a major factor in this

crash that killed six people, three of them high school students. investigators say the driver hit a curb, lost control, slammed into a tree, killing everyone inside. victims range in age from 15 to 23. a new york city parade once again marred by violence. police say there was a stabbing and three shootings, one of them deadly just before the start of the west india day parade yesterday morning. and this isn't the first time this has happened. city officials say the parade is frequently surrounded by violence. british prime minister david cameron wants to give police the power to seize passports from citizens who are suspected of traveling abroad to fight with terror groups. he's also asking parliament to expand the country's anti-terror laws. cameron also wants to block suspected british jihadi fighters from re-entering the country. now, intelligence officials believe that around 500 brittons have gone to fight in syria and iraq. the remains of nine more victims of the malaysia airlines plane that was shot down in ukraine have been returned for

burial. honor guards escorted the coffins to special hearses in kuala lumpur. it's expected to be the last bodies to be returned to malaysia. the remaining malaysia passengers are classified as missing. all 298 people on board that flight were killed when the plane was shot down in july. pope francis is using soccer to promote peace. the match for peace put together teams featuring muslims, christian, jewish, hindu and buddhist players. this also raised money for at-risk children. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's going to be tough to find a cool spot this morning, but you will find the coolest temperatures of the day right now. a little bit of a breeze blowing, as you can see by this view from center city. right now we're looking at temperatures that are in the upper 70s for much of the area with clear skies this morning. we're in for a lot of sunshine. a few thin scattered clouds over philadelphia international. most of the area is in the

clear. the humidity at 84% right now. temperatures actually running warmer than it was yesterday at this time. we'll see a southerly wind to start with and becoming more west-southwesterly. but either way it's going to keep the heat on during the day and the humidity high. the temperatures already warmer from the pocono mountains through philadelphia. willington is a couple degrees warmer. 74 yesterday morning. we're a bit warmer at this hour. it's about ten degrees above normal for this time of year. 74 in trenton right now. kenneth square is down to 73 degrees. quakertown has found the 60s this morning. there's a chance we'll see some isolated spots of fog to start with, but most of will be fog free. and the humidity, high already in delaware and south jersey. look at middletown at 77 degrees right now. also 77 for atlantic city. beach haven and cape may harbor. so getting a warm start. and with clear skies for most of the area, it's going to be brilliant sunshine to heat us to the 90-degree mark by midday and

still climbing this afternoon. so a lot of people will still be heading to the shore, no doubt, for a little bit of relief. but you may not find it all that much today. close to the 90-degree mark right along the coast. and a chance of some evening showers and thunderstorms. by tomorrow, the storms take a break. 85 degrees. the numbers start to come down and really pleasant for thursday with a high of 79. but the heat inland is going to stay on. the seven-day forecast. the details coming up in the next half hour. >> bill, thanks. a lot of people are back from vacation. many of you returning to school and traffic will return to our nonsummer patterns, sad to say. traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at the roads. >> once school gets back in session, that's when things start to get really busy on the roads. this morning not too bad. we're not dealing with any accidents. no delays to report. and even a lot of the construction is on break for the holiday. this is near the mid-county toll plaza. both directions moving just

fine. drive times about 17, 18 minutes in both directions between 95 and 76. speaking of 95, this is what it looks like near the philadelphia international airport. for the last few weeks we have seen overnight construction out here in both directions. but as you can see right now, no construction to report on 95 through delaware county. even through philadelphia it's looking good near gerard it's quiet. two disabled vehicles in montgomery county. whitemarsh and then the other still in west conshohocken. be careful in either of those intersections. getting behind the governor. up next, the angry driver who made an eventful trip to the shore for chris christie. and a dieting discovery. it appears certain tv shows may be making you snack more. so grab some peanuts and stay tuned.

out and spoke with the driver who was following him. no charges were filed. well, this morning we're learning more about the made in america concert that wrapped up this weekend. a live look at the art museum this morning. all quiet now. such a jam-packed weekend after that two-day festival featuring more than 20 acts wrapped up. this is a look at what the cleanup looked like yesterday. boy, there was a lot of cleanup that had to be done there. as there is every year. we've learned that a total of six people were arrested during the festival. police haven't said why. five of those arrests were on concert grounds. the other was just outside the venue. ♪ and a slightly different story on the west coast. more than 100 people were arrested or given citations during made in america in los angeles this weekend. this is the first year they've had simultaneous events on either coast. now, they had more arrests in l.a. even though they had fewer people attend the event as
