hospital where they have done heroes work there to help the patients infected with the ebola virus. >> natalie, you are so right. good morning. this is where those two americans were brought for treatment for the ebola virus. we're here even as the news surfaces that a third american doctor working at that same hospital in liberia has now contracted ebola. we'll have more on that. and we'll have this exclusive interview with dr. kent brantly. he talks about how he learned he had been infected, the progression of his disease, the symptoms he was suffering, and the care he received here. he'll talk about all of that. and also when i arrived here late last night, natalie, i was given an exclusive tour of the isolation unit where these two americans were treated. over the last month or so it sounded like the stuff of science fiction. i was taken inside the actual rooms where these two americans were treated. i'll take you inside in just a little while. but right now i'll send it back to you. i know there's a lot of news to

cover. >> matt, thanks. look forward to the interview. we want to start with the breaking news of president obama this morning addressing the murder of another u.s. hostage of isis. the president calling it horrific act of violence while vowing to destroy the terror group. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in turkey along the syrian border. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. the white house says that a video apparently showing the beheading of an american journalist does appear to be genuine. and this just adds more pressure on washington to do something about the still unchallenged isis threat in syria. on a nato visit in estonia, president obama expressed outrage at the beheading of steven sotloff and resolve. >> americans are repulsed.

we will not be intimidated. their horrific acts only unite us as a country to take the fight against the terrorists. those who make the mistake of harming americans will learn that we will not forget and that our reach is long and justice will be served. >> reporter: in a video released by isis yesterday, sotloff faced his death with dignity and bravery. a friend says that's how he lived his life too. >> it took a lot of courage for him to continue to cover the story. >> reporter: the reporter never flinched or cowered even as he knew these were his final moments. the terrorist seemed to be the same who executed james foley. the same swagger, the voice with what sounded like the same british accent. steven sotloff's mother shirley had pleaded for mercy for her son. >> we want to see him home safe and sound and to hug him.

>> reporter: the sotloff family said they are now grieving in private. many believe the u.s. needs to attack isis in syria without delay. >> we cannot allow an enemy this dangerous to have a safe haven anywhere. >> reporter: instead the administration's focus has been fighting isis with air strikes across the border in iraq. leaving isis unchallenged in syria. isis has threatened to kill a british hostage next. and overnight the white house authorized 350 more american troops to iraq where isis also as a stronghold. natalie, willie, back to you. >> thank you. richard engel along the turkey/syria border. another american from a north carolina-based charity has tested positive for ebola. let's head back down to matt in atlanta with the latest. matt? >> all right, willie. thank you very much. news of that third doctor being infected with ebola broke just

as we were sitting down with dr. kent brantly. he told us he and this other doctor are dear friends. a question a lot of people are asking, will that third doctor be flown here to emory university hospital. this morning the third missionary is in isolation in liberia said to be doing well and in good spirits. he'd been treating patients in a separate facility. it's not yet known how he contracted the virus. >> you really wonder about how tight the infection control is and how tight the isolation procedures are if someone that was working on a maternity ward may have been infected. >> reporter: i asked dr. kent brantly one of two americans who survived the virus about the latest victim. how closely did you work with this person? >> very closely. it's a dear friend. >> reporter: this person carried on the fight after you were brought back to this country. >> yeah. >> reporter: have you been able

to be in contact with his or her family? >> i have. >> reporter: how are they doing? >> they're holding up pretty well. >> reporter: are you worried that because so many health care workers and physicians are contracting the virus, that it will be increasingly hard to get other people to go there? >> i think that's a reality. you know, that's the nature of ebola. is that health care workers are predominantly affected because of the way it's spread. in this situation seeing another colleague, another foreigner, another doctor, another health care leader now brought down by this infection again, i think what you state is a very real difficulty that we're facing in fighting this epidemic. >> reporter: so far the ebola outbreak has killed more than

1,500 people. 10% of those health care workers. more than 3,000 have been infected. the world health organization estimates that number could grow to as many as 20,000. >> this is the most complex and severe ebola outbreak we've seen in nearly 40 years' history of this disease. >> there is a window of opportunity to tamp this down, but that window is closing. >> dr. bruce ridner is the doctor here at the infectious disease unit here at emory hospital. good morning to you. another doctor in liberia has been infected by the ebola virus. what does this tell you about the spread of the disease? >> i think there's always been a suspicion that the ebola virus disease is much more extensive than we had thought. a lot of patients are not coming forward. and i think this just demonstrates that there is a lot of infection in that population.

>> you successfully treated two americans here in your isolation unit. what did you learn in treating those two patients that can be used to help in the future treatment of patients not only here in atlanta but over in liberia? >> again, what we have to appreciate, a lot of the infrastructure, the testing that we take for granted here is nonexistent in that part of the world. and so the major thing that we learned in taking care of them was a number of important abnormalities that their bodies had developed during this infection which our colleagues in west africa are not able to even pressure. we have providers in the process of developing guidelines for other providers and letting them know to be aware and address them. >> and act proactively. >> very proactively. >> you've got this isolation unit here. it is state of the art but you say that is not necessary to

help save the lives of other patients elsewhere. >> that is absolutely correct. we're prepared to take care of any infectious disease with any degree of infectivity. ebola is only spread by body fluids. >> have you been given any idea whether you'll get this third american doctor flown here to atlanta? any word on that? >> i know there have been discussions that this person will be coming back to the united states. i don't believe the actual site where they're coming back has been decided yet. >> all right, doctor. thank you very much. congratulations to you and your staff. when i sat down with dr. brantly yesterday, we talked a little bit about his fears of the stigma associated with this disease even as he is now a survivor. when i told friends of mine that i was going to come here to interview you, you know what the number one question was? you going to shake his hand.

are you worried about a stigma traveling with you? >> i haven't until now. >> i shook your hand. i'll do it again. but are you worried when people hear your name -- let's say they're about to board your airplane and they hear will passenger kent brantly come forward, do you think they might say wait a minute he's the guy who had ebola. >> i'm not worried about that. it may happen. i've been recognized a few times out in public. but the only people who come and speak to me are the ones who grab my arm and say, i am so glad to meet you. we have been praying for you. thank you so much for what you've done. i'm just so happy. >> he is truly an extraordinary guy. we'll be hearing more from him in a special "dateline" on friday night. but now back to natalie in new york. >> we'll hear more of that interview coming up as well. thank you. now to what appears to be yet another major security breach involving one of the

nation's largest retailers. this morning home depot is investigating a potential hacking that may have exposed the personal data of tens of millions of customers. cnbc's courtney reagan has the latest on this. >> good morning. the largest home improvement retailer may be the latest data breach victim. home depot is looking at unusual data that might indicate a possible payment data breach. if home depot confirms the breach, customers will be notified. a fresh batch of stolen credit card data appeared on the black market tuesday. and that hackers may have begun collecting shoppers' data in the spring at u.s. home depot stores. raising the possibility a breach could be larger than the one that occurred at target

affecting 70 million shoppers and costing target at least a hundred million dollars. >> it's a whole new hacking world. courtney reagan, thank you. i mean, what's next? >> they keep coming. meanwhile, tamron's here with late-breaking developments in the crisis in ukraine. >> good morning, everyone. conflicting reports out of ukraine over a potential cease-fire. he and russian president vladimir putin have reached an agreement. but russia says that's not possible because they're not even a party to the conflict. keir simmons is in mariupol. >> reporter: we're told there's fighting just outside of this town. and shells exploded near a road we were traveling on. the president of ukraine says a cease-fire process has been agreed with russia. but as you say, moscow is denying that saying it can't agree a cease-fire because it is not part of the conflict despite plenty of evidence of russian

military here in ukraine. what a clear is russia is winning in this. we've seen ukrainian government tanks destroyed. we've seen pro-russian rebels in control of the border. we spoke to a commander who says they plan to take more of ukraine before they're done. if there is a cease-fire of any sort, it's likely to be many the favor of those pro-russian rebels. >> keir, thank you very much. back here at home, joan rivers remains on life support nearly six days after suffering cardiac arrest. anne thompson is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. her daughter melissa rivers confirmed that development yesterday in a statement to fans who have been just showing a tremendous support to joan rivers. melissa rivers confirmed her 81-year-old mother is on life support, remains on life support. and she said that if her mom knew of all the outpouring of

affection, she would simply be overwhelmed by how her fans and showbiz fans have responded. melissa says the family is grateful for all the love and support they have been shown. joan and melissa rivers host "fashion police." in a statement yesterday e! network said it is on hold. >> thank you very much. a new study reveals removing both breasts to treat cancer affecting only one side does not boost survival chances for most women. they compared with surgery that removed just the tumor. the study involved nearly 200,000 women treated for cancer in one breast. ten-year survival rates were nearly identical. roughly 82% for women who had surgery to remove the tumor plus radiation. and for those who had double mastectomies, those who had only a single fared slightly worse.

apple says its systems were not hacked, but some user accounts were. what may be the biggest celebrity hacking ever hit home for many when the icloud got much of the blame. the online storage system backs up the digital lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world. apple now admits some celebrity apple accounts were compromised using a very targeted attack on user names, pass words, and security questions. the tech company said the hack did not result from a failure of the icloud system or as some speculated, the find my iphone app. >> headline from apple today is that, look, nothing's wrong with our icloud. these are individual accounts that just somehow got hacked. >> reporter: little consolation for stars like supermodel kate upton and jennifer lawrence and kirsten dunst who all but admitted their photos were part

hospital in atlanta once again. matt? >> thank you very much. the brantlys are deeply religious people. their work as medical missionaries have taken them to the far corners of the world to treat the sick and care for the poor. his wife amber and their children had just flown back to the united states. dr. brantly was still in liberia when he found out he was infected with the virus. >> it was a surreal moment. my first comment was, okay, what's next? what's the plan? how are we going to handle this? and how am i going to tell amber? >> when did you make the phone call to amber? >> it was pretty quickly after that. and to be honest with you, i don't remember that phone call. >> was it emotional? do you remember that part? >> i called amber first.

i called my parents. i called, i think, some of my siblings. what i remember is that everyone i called began crying, sobbing. and i didn't shed a single tear. >> why do you think? >> i believe in that moment god blessed me with that peace that's beyond understanding it. i was so thankful that amber and the kids were not there. that would have been an overwhelming mental burden if i had woken up sick laying in bed next to my wife with one of my children snuggled up next to me. >> how do you describe what it felt like when you were at your sickest? >> i've never had a terminal illness before. i never faced death before. i think my experience with ebola, you know, i was looking at it through a different lens than a lot of people because i

had taken care of so many patients and watched their progression. as i developed bloody diarrhea and vomited blood and developed a rash and my eyes got red, i was still looking at it through my doctor eyes thinking, okay, which symptom is going to come next. >> have you ever treated a patient who had that type of symptom who survived? >> i hadn't. we had only had one survivor to that point. he never had any of those symptoms. >> was there a prayer? was there a passage? was there something you repeated to yourself in those worst days that provided comfort? >> as i sat there facing my own possible death from ebola, i said, god, i know you can save me. i know you can. but even if you don't, i want to

be faithful to you. i won't -- i won't deny you. and that seemed strange. that seems like a strange answer to your question of what brought me comfort. >> there was a time during those days in liberia when you were really sick that doctors didn't think you would make it through one of those nights. were you aware of that? >> yeah. >> did they talk to you about it? >> i don't think they ever said, kent, i think you're about to die. but i felt like i was about to die. and i said to the nurse who was taking care of me, i'm sick, i have no reserve, and i don't know how long i can keep this up. >> his survival may have hinged on an experimental treatment. brantly found a lifeline. thousands of miles away by communicating with his wife

amber. he says he doesn't remember that phone call all that much. what do you remember about it? >> when he did call to tell me he had ebola, i don't know if i can describe that. i was -- i knew what was coming. i've seen him treat these people who had already been diagnosed and i knew how it ends. i knew how everyone had ended up so far. so i had the disadvantage of having the knowledge of the course of the disease. i was scared. >> how many conversations did you have over the next couple of days, the two of you? >> we talked every day. at least once a day. we talked by video chat and by phone.

>> video chats, were you alarmed by his appearance? he was getting pretty sick by that time. >> yeah, he was. yeah, he looked terrible. >> and you must have thought for him that had to be an incredibly lonely time. >> yeah. i think that was the hardest thing on me was knowing how lonely he was. >> but the eyes of the country were on brantly as he returned home for treatment at emory university hospital in atlanta. did you have any way of thinking or knowing that two and a half weeks later he would walk out virus-free? did that even cross your mind? >> no. i was looking at the long haul thinking atlanta was going to be home sweet home for awhile. i thought he'd be there for months, actually. >> your daughter is 5. your son is 3. when they get older and you sit them down and you talk to them about what their dad did in

liberia, how will you tell them that story? >> i think this will be one of those family stories that nobody ever forgets. our family story doesn't stop with dad had ebola in liberia. by the time they're hearing that story, we will have moved on. >> as you know, dr. brantly was flown here to emory university hospital in atlanta. he was treated in the isolation unit here for two and a half weeks. and last night when i landed in atlanta, i was given a tour of that state of the art facility and told the stories of the doctors and nurses who helped to save dr. brantly's life. this is where kent brantly -- >> this is where kent brantly spent approximately three weeks. >> to the untrained eye, this looks like a normal hospital room. is there a difference? can i touch something in here? >> of course.

everything has been sanitized. this is an intensive care unit head wall. so a patient can be cared for with any degree of illness. it has suction, oxygen, electrical connections to put monitoring equipment. >> anything in this room that came in contact with dr. brantly from the pillows to gauze to syringes to anything else, what do you do with it after it's come in contact with the patient? >> what we actually do is we put it in a special autoclave bag. and we still treat it as regulated medical waste. >> there's negative pressure in this room. >> correct. >> so all the air in this room is forced upward. >> downward. the air comes out of that vent. and it goes into that vent. every three minutes the air in this room is changed.

>> and you're following closely the developments in west africa, i know. >> we are. >> do you imagine that you will be put to the test in the near future. >> i think it's quite likely there will be additional americans who require exp expatriation back to the united states and it's likely they'll come to this unit. >> i know you'll have a chance to sit down with more of the doctors and nurses who saved his life a little bit later on today from there. >> yeah. i'm going to talk to the staff later on. that will be part along with more of our interview with dr. brantly of a special "dateline" friday night at 10:00 eastern time. i think people will find his words very compelling. >> he looks so good. he looks like he's doing so well. is there much more to him feeling like he's back to being 100%? >> he says he's still weak. by the end of the day he does lose his strength a little bit but he's getting better and better every day picking up a little of the weight he lost because of the virus.

with us today. >> good morning. >> the first thing people asked me when i said i was going to talk to you today, why now? why is she telling the story 37 years later? what's the answer? >> when my son was seven years old he jumped off the school bus and had worn large oversized sunglasses to school. the kids called him elvis. he ran up to me and said that. i had written down my memories shortly after elvis passed away as a way to hold on. i went forward with my life. i got married, had my son, raised him. he's 20 years old. just turn eed 20. went off to college and the time was right because there were a lot of speculations and untruths regarding our relationship. and i wanted to get the truth out. and so when he went off to college, i devoted my time to him. and i went to work. took me a couple of years. >> take me back, ginger, to 1976. you were 20 years old.

you meet elvis by a chance meeting at graceland. what was it like at that point to step into the orbit of the most famous man on the planet? >> he was a magical, magical person. i mean, he had this ability to draw you into his world whether it be through his spiritual studies or his music. he had a gift. such a charismatic person when he entered a room you just felt this energy. >> it's interesting you met him late in his life. a lot of the impressions the public, i think, have of late elvis is that he was unhappy. that he was overweight. that's not the impression you give in this book. >> no. >> who was the elvis you knew in the last days and months? >> elvis was looking forward to so many things. he wanted in more films, more music, wanted to get married, wanted to have children. and i wrote in my book about how he would over-salt his food and at times would appear more puffy or bloated if you want to call

it that on camera. but he was never fat. i used to get aggravated when people would say he was fat. i thought he was a handsome man. he just wasn't 20 anymore. and some people, that was hard to maybe see. >> i was blinded from the moment i sat down by a couple of things you brought with you. what are we looking at here? >> this was my beautiful engagement ring that elvis gave to me in 1977. i had been sitting in his daughter's room with him. he got up, made a few phone calls, came back and i was like what's going on? took me by the hand, went into his bathroom which was his sanctuary, seated me in a chair and said many beautiful words to me and asked me to marry him. >> gorgeous. and then the necklace, is that the tbc necklace. >> tlc necklace. you were part of his inner circle when he gave you this. and it's some of the most dear pieces i have. >> you mentioned the bathroom. and unfortunately that's become

an infamous place because of what happened. he was famous for staying up all night. didn't go to bed until 6:00 or 8:00 in the morning that night. you wake up, go to the bathroom door. describe what you saw. >> elvis had fallen forward. on the toilet. and it was devastating. i wrote about it in my book. i was in denial. it was something that none of us expected. it's still hard to this day. but it was a very tragic, sad day. >> you wrote in the book you heard as hi turned his face a hint of air expelled from his nose. did that mean to you that elvis was still alive when you found him? >> no. i just -- afterwards when we

were together in his grandmother's bedroom, we were all still hoping. it was hard. it was like a huge part of me knew, but we were still praying and hoping that the doctors could save him. and just kept walking through the house and praying. >> you describe in the book these sleep packets he took to get through the night. you described him taking two that night. did you have any sense of what kinds of drugs were in those packets? >> no, i wasn't sure. i know sometimes they had given him placebos because he had a dependency on sleep medication. and sometimes they would switch and give placebos but i didn't know exactly when that was. so i don't know what was in those popular packets on that particular day. >> in hindsight, do you think there was anything else that could have been done in those moments in that room to save elvis presley? >> no. i think elvis went very, very quickly. >> it is a riveting read, i have to say. the book is "elvis & ginger."

we are back at 8:49 for the second time the sprout network owned by nbc universal is looking for the kindest kid in the country. we are happy to be working with them on this year's search. to answer kids must write in about the kind acts they're performing to help others. emma locke grabbed the first title. and we talked to her about why kindness counts. >> emma is our chief kindness officer. >> reporter: 7-year-old emma locke taught us a lesson about helping others. she started a program called locke boxes of love in which she packs boxes of toys and sends them to siblings of children fighting serious illness. her 6-year-old brother chase is

battling cancer. >> you put in things that they like into a box and mail it to them. one of them likes arts and crafts, we packed them stuff for arts and crafts. one of them like video game stuff, so we gave him video game stuff. one of them liked cards, we packed him cards. >> reporter: after emma received her title, sprout brought her family to its philadelphia headquarters to spend a day. emma joined in on several of sprout's broadcasts and she even came to "today." >> the organization you started called lock boxes of love, why don't you explain to everybody watching what that is. >> well -- just a second. >> she's looking at herself on tv right over there. i know what that's like. i understand. >> i'm sorry. >> no, you're doing great, sweetie. >> reporter: the best part of being chief kindness officer, emma says she liked being on tv. >> do you want to stick around

this whole thing has been such a team effort from africa all the way to here. it's amazing. another thing we've all been talking about, apple's icloud controversy. it got the blame initially when we heard about the hundreds of celebrity photos that had been hacked including naked photos allegedly of jennifer lawrence, kate upton. they thought, okay, there's this failure with the icloud system. apple is kind of fighting back now saying this wasn't an icloud failure. but in fact, that the hackers went after certain celebrities targeting their user names, their passwords, their security questions. so it could have happened to anybody. didn't matter whether you were on icloud or drop box or google. anything. they went after people's actual identities. >> i don't know that that make mes feel any better because it still shows you that anybody can pretty much crack your e-mail. >> that's one of the things i think that if nothing else comes out of this that we've all learned now that you've got

to -- you've got to take better passwords, change them more often. think about what you put on the cloud or on your phone. so on the one hand, and the interesting thing is everybody thought this is going to be a public relations disaster for apple withor the iphone 6 getti ready to be allegedly being announced coming up in a week or so and in fact their stock has gone up. so i don't know that they're going to suffer from this, but i think it's a real call to people to start thinking about this. >> we all say change your password, make it more complexion. add a number between a letter. at your work you have a password, you have a couple of websites, you have a password. now your banking in fgs. and i mean, i'll say it. i get lazy. or it's easy for me to remember a certain and then i -- because the alternative is every time i log in, i've now forgotten my

>> it's a problem. vaccines are one of the greatest medical advance of all time. we prevented countless deaths with vaccines. we need parents to understand they're the safe and effective way to protect our children. >> now you're starting to see the reaction, what's happening is the return of diseases that we once thought were eradicated. measles, also the whooping cough returning as well. those were things that were in the past, right? >> that's exactly right. we don't want to go backwards. my own father had polio and to listen to his stories thinking at age 13 he was going to die is just unimaginable. and we have a vaccine that can prevent that from happening and we need parents to actually really feel good about having this ability to protect their children. >> there are 25 shots recommended in the first 15 months of a child's life. i hear a lot of parents saying couldn't we spread those out a little bit so we're not pumping our babies full of so much of this stuff? >> i understand why that seems logical to parents who don't really understand, but basically the vaccines given in

combination work with the child's immune system and really work to protect the child when they are the most vulnerable. you don't want to wait until it's too late and be reacting. you want to be proactive and do what you can to protect them. >> so there's no proof to the myth you can, overloading your child? >> scientific studies do not show that at all. >> and you've heard this long debate and this is a whole other debate about autism and vaccines. but some say hi a healthy child at 12 months and at 14 or 16 months something changed and in that window they got a lot of shots. do you say to those parents? >> i understand as a parent myself that when something happens to your child you're going to try to understand why and look at everything that happened around that time. but the reality is that there's a timing relationship between the vaccines and the usual development of symptoms of autism. so it's easy for parents to wrongly point to the vaccines as

the cause when really there are other causes. i wish we knew exactly what causes autism. the thinking it's a combination of genetics and the environment. but there's no relationship between vaccines and autism. >> although vaccines are deemed to be safe, there is the injury program. so why the need for that? >> vaccines are safe and the benefit of the vaccines far outweigh the risk of the vaccine. however, there are times when adverse events do happen. and the national vaccine injury compensation fund was established for families so that they don't have to go through the burdensome court system should something happen. >> this is a really important conversation for families. we appreciate you being here. thanks so much. >> my pleasure. and coming up next, how do we lose those last few pounds for good? right after this.
