>> announcer: "nbc10 news" starts now. starting with this -- a fixture outside of philadelphia city hall is reborn. the unveiling of dilworth park is on today and we're live with a preview. a man shot in the head. a car set on fire. this morning, police are hoping evidence leads them to a killer. and a live look this morning at a quiet beach avenue in cape may today is shaping up to be probably the nicest day this week. we're off to a cool start, except degrees. get out and enjoy it today before the humidity that we've seen earlier this week returns. good morning, everyone. this is "nbc10 news."

i'm chris cato. let's get to bill henley. >> good morning, chris. you felt that dry air move in and yesterday cool, too. parts of the area 12 degrees cooler than yesterday. and skies are clearer in center city. we saw a few spots overnight but most of the area is clear and cool. 63 in wilmington, millville is down to 60 degrees. low 60s for pottstown, allentown, look at the pocono mountains with 53 degrees right now. we will see sunny skies and a cool one to start. 75 degrees by 9:00. by lunchtime, sunny comfortable and 83 degrees. we'll go through it hour by hour when i come back. but first, jillian mele has thursday morning traffic. >> good morning to you, bill. first of awe, no accidents to report on the majors. we are following that typical construction. this is i-95, the southbound side of i-95 between bartram and

320. yesterday, it was up around 5:30. 422, armand hammer boulevard. detours will be posted for drivers in the lehigh valley, some of that normal construction is out there on the northeast extension. if you're taking 22, this is what it looks like near airport road, chris. >> happening now, years in the making, minutes from opening, newly renovated dilworth plaza. that area on the west side of city hall has been closed for the past three years for the construction and redesign efforts. nbc10's jesse gary is live with a preview. jesse, when does this plaza open? >> reporter: well, it opens just about now, chris. crews have started taking down temporary fencing that seems

like it's been peril around this park. they started to take it down and they're getting ready for its opening. ribbon cutting ceremonies scheduled for 11:00 this morning. let's take a look at the video. almost three years of digging. the reconfigured dilworth park is ready for the area. the new area features a cafe, ice rink, and approved access to all septa transit lines. some residents say the project is worth the tens of millions of dollars it has cost. >> we need something in our neighborhood for all the different people traveling back and forth on their lunch breaks and stuff like that. >> reporter: progress has snagged the system along the way. we'll talk about that in the next 30 minutes and not everyone believes that this is necessarily a good use of private and public money as you can see, as it takes shape, as they take down the temporary fencing. we're live outside of city hall.

jesse gary. we're just getting this in. this is breaking news out of nashville, tennessee, where a disturbance has broken out at the center of the juvenile detention center where 30 teens have escaped. right now we're told 30 teens are roaming around their campus refusing to go back to their dorms. 32 escaped monday night through a weak spot in the fence. teens with at least three felonies are held here. this is video from the initial escape. six of the teenagers remain at large. philadelphia police are examining evidence from two crime scenes this morning after a man was found dead inside a burning car. a black mitsubishi gallant went up in flames near olney. three hours earlier, witnesses say they saw a man shot in the head three blocks away. they're looking for a man running away from the scene and getting into a wrecked car. foot food workers will rally

in philadelphia today calling for higher wages. food workers marched in the labor day parade monday. they will march girard around noon. they're asking for a wage of $15 an hour. just this week, president obama and vice president biden called for an increase in the minimum wage. a live look at the philadelphia skyline center city this morning. teachers in the philadelphia public school district are getting ready for a new school year. classes start for students next monday, september 8th. this year, there are more budget cuts to contend with, and that's making some teachers pretty apprehensive about the coming year. nbc10's katy zachry is live in buffington with what teachers are saying, katy. >> reporter: hi, chris. well, teachers in the philadelphia school system have been back in the classroom since tuesday. so there are no bodies or there aren't multiple bodies in the

classrooms just yet for many teachers, they say the problems have begun. we know this year, they're starting the year off and have less security than last year. superintendent hite talked about this announcing schools would open on time but with a $20 million deficit. and also that they would not fill vacant police officer positions, reducing safety in all 14 schools. for teachers that means extra bodies to monitor kids in the halls at lunch and recess, they do not exist. they've been told by principals to prepare to fill the gaps. does i think over the summer, everybody was thinking what do we do? how do we proceed? the number one focus is the children. >> reporter: so how will teachers combat the reality of less security? i'm working on that story and we'll have it for you at 5:15. reporting live, katy zachry, "nbc10 news." major changes are coming

with the new school for high school students in trenton. classes started monday, dozens of students and their families filed into orientation. trenton central high school will be closed for a four-year $131 million rebuilding project. during that time, students will attend classes in four different locations. >> i think they should have contacted us as soon as the school left out in june, but they didn't. >> it's been very last minute? >> yeah, very. >> she was speaking of parents just recently learning which school buildings their children will attend. ninth graders will attend in a former church building. today governor jack markell will announce an initiative joined by the secretary of education in warner elementary in wilmington. they're going to talk about the plans that will provide many of

the disadvantaged students. and this is from our south jersey bureau -- >> good evening, my name is britney lewis and i'm miss delaware. >> there's miss delaware right there. in the shadow of several casino closures in atlantic city, the city has a tradition that's bringing smiles to town. the 2015 miss america contestants made their debut on the board walk yesterday. >> i guess i should say 2014 miss america contestants? or do they call it by the next year? anyway, the 53 women met with fans. the tradition walk ceremony. the miss america pageant will be held september 14th. now your nbc10 "first alert" weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> what a beautiful start this morning, skies are clear, the humidity is way down. and temperatures have come down as well. a live view from center city from adventure aquarium.

lots of sunshine, humidity stays low during the day today. it will be warm this afternoon, but the heat and humid tishgs that's on the way back. this weekend, we're looking at the possibility of some storm it's in area and some hot weather as well. right now, it feels great outside. six degrees cooler in philadelphia. at 69 degrees. the humidity, that number will drop significantly as the day goes on. temperature change, 10 degrees cooler for mt. pocono and pottstown. mount holly is 12 degrees cooler. 13 degrees cooler in millville. saturday nice and clear. we'll see lots of sunshine today but enjoy it today because waiting in the wings is humid air that's pushing right back into the area for tomorrow and the weekend. so future clouds showing not much going on during the day today. this afternoon, we might see some scattered clouds to the south but no sign of any wet weather today.

mostly sunny, nice and comfortable, high temperatures to the middle and upper 80s this afternoon. the neighborhood-by-neighborhood forecast when i come back. >> all right, bill. at 10 minutes after 4:00, let get a check of what's happening on the highways this early morning. nbc10's "first alert" traffic reporter jillian mele has a look that the. >> good morning, chris. yeah, it's pretty quiet throughout. no accidents to start the morning. this is 76 and a live look at spring garden street. your drive time is 14 minutes in both directions from the blue route and the vine. the blue route is quiet and so is vine street. we have construction on bensalem and willow grove. we have the two right lanes blocked from that area. use caution there. construction once again on the ben franklin bridge especially the westbound side as drivers make their way into philadelphia. with that right lane being blocked we see heavy volume as we approach the 7:00 hour. keep that in mind.

14 minutes after 4:00 now. it looks like a major change is on the way for septa's busy market east station. nbc10's tracy davidson is live in the digital operations center. tracy, with word on a big announcement coming today? >> right. septa officials say they will reveal that major change to market east this morning. but nbc10 has learned what that will be. market east will be renamed jefferson station. it would be a corporate sponsorship by jefferson health system. it wouldn't be the first time. the former avenue was renamed at&t station back in 2010. now, this change has been rumored for days, last week, the website posted this picture of the septa rail map sent in from

a tipster. you can see it says jefferson station on the place where market east would normally would. officials on septa would not comment on the change until they officially announce that big reveal later on this morning at 10:00. live from the digital operations center, tracy davidson, "nbc10 news." students are starting a new school year on a somber note mourning a classmate. 14-year-old ashley cook died in after being injured in a car crash along with four soccer players from mainland regional high school. students honored her with a candlelight vigil yesterday. the players and others were hit by a truck when it crossed the center line. >> you didn't have to know her for long to know she was a good person, a gentle and kind person. >> she was the last person in the world i would ever expect something like this to happen to. >> ashley cook's funeral will be

on monday. charges have not been filed in the case. police in berks county are looking for vandals that set a storage shed on fire. it cost damage to sports equipment including destruction of the team's football gear. that first game is tomorrow night against unville. >> five firefighters and two bystanders were hurt in a fire. the building was evacuated over fears it might collapse. over 50 people were forced to leave their homes. in kansas city, a man with a long criminal history is now charged with killing three people shot to death on tuesday. police found one murder victim in a driveway and two others in a nearby home. two other victims survived but badly beaten. police arrested this man, brandon howell hours later. in new york, the faa is investigating after three bird strikes were reported at

laguardia airport within one hour yesterday morning. they happened after the planes were landing or shortly after setting down. all three planes did land safely with no damage. and investigators want to know what caused a water main break that led to this giant sinkhole that swallowed a bus with 13 people on board. look at that. everyone was able to crawl out through the windows. one person had minor injuries. well, animal control officers in southern california are trying to catch a cobra on the loose. the venomous snake bit a dog. look at that, it's an albino cobra. officials are warning that the cobra will strike if cornered. in utah picky eaters are rejoicing. 300 pounds of broccoli spilled on the interstate yesterday morning. it took two hours to clean up the broccoli. a car tried to swerve to avoid the mess and flipped over.

no one was hurt. an arkansas woman is accused of stuffing handfuls of makeup in her purse and her mug shot isn't doing her lawyer any favors. police say she stole $455 worth of eye shadow from ulta. police say she tried to damage the makeup as she pulled it out of her purse to make it appear used. >> announcer: now your "first alert" weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> the temperatures have come down. clear skies. they're still falling at a live view at cape may. look at this, 59 degrees right now, chester springs, philadelphia's at 69 degrees. quakertown, 57 degrees right now. pottstown, at 60 degrees, will likely fall into the 50s this

>> you know, not too many obstacles, chris. this is a live look at the blue route near the midcounty toll plaza. the entire blue route is wyatt. drive time between 76 and blue route 17 to 18 minutes. now for construction, we have a little bit northbound past 9th street. that's part of that milling and repaving project that's been going on the last few weeks. and then we also have road work we're following near 95, near the philadelphia international airport. there is construction on the southbound side. that's what we see. happening right now, action construction. the two right lanes are blocked between bartram and the airport. the fourth annual help our kids radiothon will comment in less than two hours. or nbc10 delaware bureau wbvl and other stations assist. the event raises thousands of

dollars for the hospital. and that money goes directly to patient care and family programs. the bar foundation wants kids to launch into art. they're launching a free app for kids and adults the keys to the collection. the gallery at center city showed a preview of that app. it allows you to find a gold key where you can unlock a special room to create your own art gallery. sounds pretty fun. the official launch is sunday. you can get the app to try out for free on that day. well, philadelphia's mo'ne davis was the biggest star. now comes a phone call controversy. it turns out a big name in the world of sports may have broken the rules just by congratulating her. and casino crisis. there's word it could be another blow to atlantic city.

here we are at 4:24. and a beautiful shot of the center city skyline. look at the green there atop some of the skyscrapers. you know what that's for, folks. we are just about three days away, believe it or not from the beginning of the eagles 2014 football season. i can't believe the producer hasn't broke out the countdown clock. vai sikahema will preview the matchup with the nfl opener with the packers and seahawks. in other news, comedian joan rivers is out of intensive care. her family says rivers has been moved into a private room where she's been kept comfortable. the 81-year-old went into cardiac arrest after a throat
