where did the summer go? >> you've got to say it. >> it's thursday night. >> football night in america! >> that's what i was waiting for, when i hear that music. >> the most storied franchise in history, the packers. going to be a good one tonight. >> meanwhile, also coming up, we can't wait to hear this. remember the story we told you about last week, the guy who used the knee defender on a flight? now he is speaking out exclusively to us. you'll want to hear his side of the story and whether or not he says he would ever use it again on a flight. >> that's coming up. let's begin on a thursday morning with that new investigation being opened now tied to the shooting of michael brown. this one is a broader look at practices within the ferguson police force. pete williams is nbc's justice correspondent. pete, as i say good morning, let's be clear, this is another investigation separate from the one into the shooting of michael brown? >> reporter: that's right, separate and much broader. the justice department will be investigating the conduct of the ferguson police department over the past several years looking at whether there's a pattern of

civil rights violations. a much wider investigation than the one already under way into last month's fatal police shooting of an unarmed teenager. the government will be looking more broadly at complaints of excessive use of force and other potential violations of the civil rights of people that the police come into contact with and arrest. the justice department will also be looking at the practices of the county police. but a government official says that will be a more cooperative investigation. one issue is likely to be the ferguson police department's hiring practices. while the community is about 70% black, roughly 11% of the city's police officers are black. under attorney general eric holder, the justice department has been more aggressive in launching these kinds of investigations into police departments in big cities and small towns. as a matter of fact, about three dozen are under way now, matt. >> pete williams in washington, thank you very much. president obama is in great britain this morning for the start of a nato summit being closely watched around the

world. front and center on his agenda, the rising threat from isis militants. nbc's senior white house correspondent chris jansing is traveling with the president. chris, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. the pressure is building here, too, with the late addition of meetings about what to do about isis. already this morning we saw a meeting between president obama and british prime minister david cameron who together penned an op ed saying we will not be cowed by barbaric killers. president obama is determined not to go it@alone, arriving at the nato summit with a goal of forming a coalition to fight isis. back home vice president joe biden was defiant. >> we will follow them until the gates of hell until they are brought to justice because hell is where they will reside. hell is where they will reside. a determination fueled by the horror of the murders and the grief felt by the family of steven sotloff, the second american brutally murdered at the hands of isis.

>> he was the most generous, caring individual. all he thought about was doing for others. >> reporter: just over a day after president obama arrived in europe filled with foet tow toe worthy state craft, he left no doubt about american resolve. >> we will not be intimidated. those who make the mistake of hafrming americans will learn that we will not forget and that our reach is long and justice will be served. >> reporter: now the tough decisions about how and when to strike back with members of congress on both sides losing patience. >> i for years have been calling to aid the free syria army. >> target them and target the terrorist training camp. >> reporter: the president hasn't indicated he's ready to launch those strikes yet or he formulated a specific strategy as pressure builds. >> this train left the station months ago, and the president is running after a train that is escaping him. the fact of the matter is that he should have had a strategy to deal with isis months ago. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry has been here as

well, working to form that coalition, looking for humanitari humanitarian, military aid from countries as diverse as australia, saudi arabia and jordan. natalie? >> chris jansing, thank you. there's this side of that story. as we reported, the into gone believes nearly 100 americans are fighting for isis in the middle east. there are still others trying to join the group. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is along the syrian border with an eye-opening report. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. as you said, we have reported that americans are among isis recruits. until now we haven't been able to speak to one directly. >> islamic name -- >> reporter: this is american donald morgan. nbc news interviewed him in bay rurt through a freelance journalist. he didn't hide his intentions, to join isis. >> i purchased the ticket with the intent of entering syria

after joining up with medical and food aid con joys or directly with the islamic state. >> reporter: morgan was raised catholic and educated at a military academy. >> my entire life growing up was surrounded by the idea that i would be 82nd airborne, i would be special forces, i would serve dutifully duty, honor and country. >> reporter: now he speaks of his country as a potential enemy and of isis, also called the islamic state, as a savior. >> the responsibility of the islamic state is to protect those who can't protect themselves. if it's not assad dropping a barrel bomb, it's going to be obama launching a drone strike. so it matters not to me who the enemy is. >> reporter: morgan wasn't always like this. he served in the national guard, worked as a deputy sheriff living in salisbury, north carolina. >> reporter: this is the house where don morgan lived at the end of a quiet street in a middle class neighborhood.

the question on the minds of his co-workers and neighbors is why would someone want to leave suburban north carolina to join the vicious fight in syria? >> it is frightening that someone could go to that extreme. >> reporter: brian bieber has known morgan for 15 years. >> i would say he was a person who was on the edge, what's it going to take -- this guy is going to fly off the handle one day. >> reporter: after getting in trouble with the law, morgan, an amateur body builder converted to islam in 2008. he followed the wars in the middle east on the internet under the twitter handle he pledged allegiance to the isis leader and his islamic state, the caliphate. >> isis as referred to, doesn't have the objective to be a terrorist organization. >> reporter: morgan tried to enter syria traveling through turkey but was turned away at the airport and deported to lebanon. running low on money, he decided to go back to the u.s. aware of

the risk. >> i think there's a strong possibility that they'll charge me with supporting terrorist organizations and participating in terrorist activities. >> reporter: when morgan returned to the u.s. last month he was arrested, but not for terrorism. he was picked up for an unrelated charge. he's still in u.s. custody. morgan pleaded not guilty and said he's not a terrorist and poses no threat to the united states. not everyone we spoke to agrees. matt, natalie, back to you. >> richard engel in turkey this morning, thank you very much. meanwhile willie is here with a terrible accident at a children's museum in nevada. >> this is really scary, guys. a popular show and telex personality at a children's science museum caused a minor explosion wednesday that sent several children to the hospital. nbc's jacob rascon is in reno. jacob, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. that minor explosion or chemical flash as police called it

happened at the discovery museum behind me during what was supposed to be a routine science demo. cell phone video captured the moment young children and their parents gathered around, suddenly a flash, then screams and scurrying, the video stops. a total of 13 people, most of them children treated for smoem inhalation and chemical burns. law enforcement working with museum staff to determine exactly what went wrong. the science presentation was supposed to simulate a tornado. up to seven children taken to local hospitals to be treated, only one still being kept for observation. that person is supposed to be well enough to be released to day. willie? >> we're hoping for the best for all those kids. jacob, thank you so much. joan rivers has been moved out of intendive care and into a private hospital room one week after the legendary comedienne suffered card ann ak arrest. anne thompson is at mt. sinai hospital here in new york.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie. her signature line is can we talk? a week after, frustration over what is her condition. melissa rivers said yesterday her mother had been moved out of icu into a private room where the 81-year-old comedienne is resting comfortably. earlier in the week melissa confirmed that her mother is on life support. joan rivers has been hospitalized since last thursday when she stopped breathing during a minor throat procedure at a nearby doctor's office. willie? >> anne thompson, we'll be keeping an eye on that. thank you. very frightening moments at a bat mitten tournament in southeast asia at the vietnam open in hoe hope chi men city. that is the stadium roof collapsing and splashing huge chunks of debris all over the tournament floor. no one was hurt because

organizers had a few minutes warning. they heard the creeks in the ceiling, evacuated the floor. no word on what caused the roof to collapse. apparently unfazed, the players moved the tournament to another building and kept playing. the hunt is on for a dangerous and deadly albino cobra on the loose in a southern california neighborhood. the venom mouse snake bit a dog in someone's back yard and slithered out of sight. not before the dog's owner managed to snap a photo of the snake. so far the deadly cobra has eluded them. residents are warned that the cobra will strike if cornered. >> was that being kept as a pet? >> we don't know yet. >> that's crazy. >> i don't care what color it is, you don't want to see a cobra. speaking of colors, there are some dollacolors for people minnesota that don't look good. >> tornado warnings going on right now. a lot of severe weather causing big problems for the upper midwest and midwest later today.

same place where his two american colleagues were also infected. we brought you the interview with kent brantly and then the other survivor nancy writebol. no one questions his faith. he volunteered to go back to liberia after his two friends were diagnosed with ebola. but he wasn't even working with ebola patients last friday when he started feeling sick. >> rick was caring for pregnant women, delivering babies -- >> his condition is unclear. but the sim charity group he works for says at this time there are no plans to bring him back to the u.s. and there's no more of that experimental treatment that helped save brantley and writebol. he's been able to communicate with his family in massachusetts. family friend mark johnson. >> he is a true hero. >> on wednesday, nancy writebol held a news conference for the first time since being released

from the hospital two weeks ago. before she spoke to the world, she and her husband david sat down with us. he was the one who told her she had been infected. >> he said, nancy, kent has ebola, and my heart sank. and then david said, and so do you. i could hear people at the front door, and i got out of bed because i was laying down. david went to hug me and to put his arms around me, and i knew how dangerous that was. and i just said dave, don't, just don't. >> how bad did it get for you? how sick did you get? >> well, the night i was evacuated, and when they put me on the airplane, i knew it was bad -- i was bad. when i said good-bye to david, i

was not sure that i would ever see him again. >> some very talented people gathered by your bedside at emory university hospital. >> there were five doctors who attended to us and 21 nurses between kent and i. they were incredible. >> even though they were in their full protective suits, i understand there was a great compassion, they went out of their way to find a way to make contact with you. >> yes. >> did they ever come to you and just say you are going to survive, you're going to make it, you're out of the woods, that old expression? >> one word it was like, i'm just getting up. i'm going to the bathroom and i'm taking a shower today. >> on my own. >> i'm tired of laying in the bed. >> when you hear her story and hear dr. brantly's story and you hear a third american doctor has been infected, it makes you sit

back and marvel about organizations like samaritan's purse and sim who have people volunteering going into these places going into harm's way. >> and still going. >> people are leaving and they're going in. >> hats off to those folks. >> amazing. by the way, we'll have much more on the ebola crisis on an nbc news special called "saving dr. brantly: the inside story of a medical miracle." now to a new layer to the tragic downfall of the madoff family. andrew madoff, the last surviving son of the convicted con man bernie madoff lost his battle with cancer on wednesday. stephanie gosk has more. >> andrew madoff was first diagnosed with cancer in 2003 before most people had even heard of a ponzi scheme. thins then he turned his father into police, lost his only brother to suicide and never completely escaped suspicion

that he was somehow involved in the largest investment scandal in history. >> reporter: andrew madoff died of lymphoma at the age of 48, six years after father bernie madoff infamous $65 million bonzi scheme collapsed. thousands of investors defrauded and the madoff family left in tatters. in 2011 he appeared on "today" alongside his mother ruth and his fiancee katherine hoover. >> what he did was awful and affected the lives of so many people. stole people's dreams and future and us among them. i'll never forgive him for that. >> reporter: at the time they were facing the latest chapter in the family trap ter, elder son mark committed suicide only months before. >> i blame bernie and i -- it's the worst thing that can happen, just the worst. >> reporter: bernie madoff is serving 150 years in prison for his crimes.

victims of the scheme included celebrities like steven spielberg and kevin bake kochb and major charity organizations . madoff's sons who worked alongside him were never charged with criminal wrongdoing, but the cloud of suspicion linger. in july, irving picard, the court appointed trustee in charge of recovering victims' money filed a lawsuit accusing the brothers of being involved in the fraud, something both mark and andrew strongly and repeatedly denied after their father's arrest. >> we've been cooperating with the authorities from the beginning, and i'm hopeful that i will be able to put this all behind me sometime soon. >> andrew madoff's cancer came back two years ago. in an interview with "people" magazine he appeared to blame the scandal saying it killed his brother quickly and was killing him slowly. >> i'm glad you pointed out in the story, for all the suspicion swirling around the brother,

workers are holding a new round of protests across the country today demanding higher wages. employees of several major chains will strike at restaurants in about 150 cities. two women in massachusetts are recovering from a very close encounter with a great white shark. it hit their kayaks, knocking them into the water. thankfully they managed to swim away and so did the shark. we're going to hear from those women in our next half hour. also ahead this morning, why is this college student carrying her dorm room mattress with her everywhere she goes? there's a very serious message behind her unique protest. tomorrow on "today," a very special interview. gold medal winner amy van dyke en will be in our studio along with her husband tom. >> this is her first big trip since being released from a rehab hospital following the atv accident that left her paralyze friday the waist down. this is one of the more inspiring people you'll ever want to meet. we can't wait to spend time with her in our studio tomorrow

morning. to an exclusive. remember the fight on a plane over a man's use of a device called the knee defender? it's of course meant to stop fellow passengers from reclining in their seats. we're hearing from that guy for the first time. nbc's hallie jackson has that story. hallie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. james beach says he's embarrassed about what happened. he wants to set the record straight. it all went down on a plane similar to this mock setup. beach says he paid a little more for extra leg room. he's 6'1". he says he pulled down his tray table and pulled out his computer to do work. what happened next triggered a big debate over the right to lean back or push back? >> absolutely. i felt terrible when we landed. >> reporter: james beach says he's still regrelting how he handled himself on a united flied to colorado 11 days ago when he used the knee defender device to stop the woman in

front of him from reclining. >> whose right is it? ar after he removed the device, the other passenger leaned back so fast she nearly cracked his computer. >> she just took all the space and can't work now. i can't. just a burts of anger. first to admit, i'm not proud of it. i pushed her seat up pretty hard to put the knee defenders back in. >> reporter: beach says after he slammed the woman's seat, she threw a drink on him. when the plane landed, both were escorted off. >> i thought that would be the end of it. i did a google search and saw it was everywhere. that to me was shocking. >> reporter: his brawl over sprawl along with two similar incidents has many debating who has the right to decline. >> it should be, you turn around, you see what the person is doing, say, i'm going to recline my seat and you recline it. i think it would have solved almost any of these problems.

>> reporter: the amount of leg room you have depends on which airline you fly. since the mid '90s, the average domestic economy seat pitch has shrunk up to two inches. >> airlines are pretty clear that passengers have the right to recline. they've been advertising this for decades. the problem is they're not able to deliver on that promise today because the seats are closer together. >> reporter: while beach says he may use the knee defenders again, he'll try to set an example to his kids next time by taking the high road at 30,000 feet. >> i said to them, learn from what i just did and don't do the same thing. >> reporter: many airlines will let you upgrade to a bit of a room manier seat as long as you pay more. the faa says these flight defenders are not illegal, but most airlines do ban them on board. beach was neither arrested or fined, matt. by the way, he says he never reclines his seat unless there's nobody behind him. he thinks it's annoying if people do it in front of him. >> so he's sorry for the way it

unique and thought provoking way. most college students start off the school year carrying backpacks and books. columbia university senior emma is carrying a mattress to her classes. the visual arts major carries the mattress everywhere she goes as her senior thesis, hoping to call attention to sexual assaults on campus. >> i will be carrying this dorm room mattress with me everywhere i go for as long as i attend the school. >> reporter: she claims she was assaulted the first day of her sophomore year. >> i feel like i've carried the weight of what happened with me everywhere since then. >> reporter: the case against her alleged rapist was dismissed. frustrated, emma and 22 other columbia students filed a federal complaint alleging the university has mishandled sexual assault cases. the students say the university is too lenient with alleged offenders and discourages victims from reporting the assault. she's not alone. one in five women experience

rape or attempted rape in college. according to the centers for disease control. the problem is so big that the white house assembled a task force to combat the issue earlier this year. as for emma, she says she will carry the mattress until her alleged assailant is either expelled or chooses to leave the school. until then, she hopes her activism turned art will make a difference. >> i've personally been so amazed by how much change has happened already in the past year that i've beenr become an activist. i think there's a whole movement starting and i think that's really amazing. >> we reached out to columbia university for comment. they did not get back us to. a spokesperson for from the university gave statement to the new york daily news saying the university respects the choice of any member of our community to peacefully express personal or political views on this and other issues. at the same time the university is committed to protecting the

kayaking off the coast of plymouth, massachusetts. >> we were just talking and paddling, and i look over to talk to her and it came completely out of the water, got the bottom of the boat and flipped it over, knocked my kayak completely over. >> reporter: the shark took a bite out of one of the kayaks, sending both women tumbling into the water. a neighbor heard both the women screaming and rushed into the water after calling 911. >> the scariest thing was sitting in the water wondering where he was. you didn't know if he was under you or around you. >> reporter: this is the second shark attack in the area in the last two weeks n. nearby duxbury swimmers were ordered out of the water after a great white shark was spotted off the coast. back in plymouth, their attack was caught on camera, but it's unlikely anyone will ever see it. >> if someone wants to fish it out, i'm sure there's great footage. >> amazing footage. >> yes, of us screaming.

much gatorade as i was coke. now it's water. >> is that a good idea to get rid of one thing and replace it with another. >> sometimes we replace them with three better coping mechanisms. a lot of times we develop habits because we're feeling lonely, bored, we need distractions. can you call a friend, do something else that's positive. like the water idea. >> tracy, this detox is largely about having a better self-image and stop saying negative things about yourself that your daughter was then hearing. >> right. >> was recognizing it half the battle? >> absolutely. the very beginning i wasn't doing so well because i wasn't realizing how habitually these things are rolling off my tongue. sometimes i wasn't thinking it. it would just come out of my mouth. >> i see a lot of smiley faces on your calendar. you did pretty well, right? >> well, after the first check-in, everyone was doing really great, and i refocused

she credits her faith in god for her recovery. she said she turned the corner when one day she was tired of laying in bed and thought, i'm getting up this morning, and she did that and got herself out of bed. >> the power of positive thinking. again, like kent brantly, an amazing sense of faith. >> what was also interesting, she talked about how the staff at emery would find ways to comfort her even though they could not touch her. she talked about dave wanting to touch her. she says imagine such an awful experience, and the one thing we all love is a hug and not being able to have someone hug you. now, of course, getting plenty of hugs and love. but at that moment just needing a hug and someone wanting to do that and you can't. >> matt was talking about it earlier. he salt down with the staff at emory university hospital. he said it's incredible to think all the doctors and nurses as well on this side who took care and also in some ways maybe put their own lives at risk not knowing at the time. an incredible story.

martha wants to know -- she wants to know about keeping your body healthy, because i think everyone wants to be fit. what do you do daily? >> again, it's -- for me i've learned this over the years since -- it's a balance. i love to eat. i grew up on fried foods and rice and beans and all this kind of stuff. at a certain point you got to go i got to eat a lot more greens. especially with the whole vegan thing. i have to have a lot more healthy food. you have to work out. you have to work out. you have to exercise. you have to move. it's -- nobody loves it. we all hate it. it's the worst. but you have to -- i mean, it's a good feeling when you get into it. >> it's over. >> when it's over, you feel great, but it's hard to do, and nobody loves doing it every day. >> what do you do? >> i like to -- i do circuit training. i do a little bit of cardio. i don't do crazy. i do 20 to 30 minutes of cardio, and then i'll do muscle work with little weights. nothing crazy. i'm not a bodybuilder. i'm just trying to stay toned, and i'm trying to keep my muscle, you know, there. it goes. >> your little ones, too.
