good morning. deadly storms, dark skies move in on millions leaving a massive path of destruction behind, destroying cars and homes. at least one person is dead in a system that showed no mercy from the midwest to the northeast. immigration delay. a controversial decision by president obama to wait at least two months before making any decision on immigration reform. >> the country is going to be better off if we have an immigration system that works. >> the president speaking exclusively with chuck todd, the new moderator of "meet the press." we'll talk to chuck about their conversation. final farewell. a star studded affair today, family, friends and celebrities expected at the funeral for the late joan rivers. what we're learning about the

private service for the comedienne as they roll out the red carpet, just as she wanted. lost and love. two huge upsets at the u.s. open. the top two seeded tennis players in the world knocked out of the semifinals. well, not too far away, a surprise proposal from one of the sport's all time greats. we have a full wrap-up today. and welcome to "today" on a sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> i'm jose diaz-balart, alongside jenna wolfe and dylan dreyer, lester holt is enjoying another day off, which he so richly deserves. >> he does. we didn't scare you away. you're back. happy to have you back. >> still a little tense though. 60 minutes left. >> we're down to 59. you're cruising.
8:02 am
you're on cruise control. >> i cleared another second, good. happy to be here. thanks. >> good to be here. >> a busy news weekend. >> we want to get to today's top story, the same storm system that we told you about on saturday, which was responsible for knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people in the midwest continue to wreak havoc on saturday moving into the northeast. dylan has more on that. good morning. >> good morning, yeah, a busy day yesterday. and one person was killed in that storm on saturday. there was a warning about the system moving through, severe thunderstorm warnings all day, but as the storms moved in, a lot of people were still taken by surprise. strong storms rolled through new england overnight, north of boston two women in their 70s were struck by lightning at the beach. both were taken to the hospital in critical condition. >> the storm arrived quickly and without warning. and they had no time to get out of the water. >> reporter: in new york, frightening moments captured on security video as a huge tree

limb demolished a car. >> it felt like a tornado. saw outside, the wind was crazy, happened in, like, a minute and it was gone. >> reporter: the same storm system knocked out power to close to half a million customers in the midwest friday night. some may be without electricity for days to come. five people were hurt outside detroit, trapped under a collapsing church tent. >> the winds started coming in, it looked like a big parachute. the wind was coming in through the sides, up through the top. >> reporter: chicago actress molly glyn, who starred on npc's "chicago fire" was riding her bike when she was struck and killed by a fallen tree limb. across the border in canada, social media lit up with the storms bringing rain and lightning to parts of ontario. now, that powerful cold front is moving away. we have no threat of severe weather today, but out in the pacific, we're still focused on hurricane norbert. it is weakening very quickly.
8:04 am
now winds at about 75 miles per hour. it is going to take a turn to the northeast and affect mexico. however, for parts of the southwest, we're still going to see some of the moisture stream in and produce some heavier downpours as we go into the next couple of days. we're looking at flash flood watches in effect. we could see rainfall rates at one inch per hour and, again, it just can't absorb into the ground that quickly and you end up with flash flooding. we could see some flooding with even southern nevada expecting two to three inches of rain, parts of southwestern arizona, including phoenix, and tucson could end up with three to four inches of rain. this is going to be an issue as we go through the next 48 hours. so we do have to keep an eye out for flash flooding. monsoonal moisture is grabbing extra moisture from hurricane norbert. it is going to be a little bit messy out that way. erica? >> dylan, thanks. a private funeral service will be held later this morning for comedienne joan rivers who passed away on thursday at the age of 81. on saturday, joan's daughter

be rolled up and buried with the comic icon -- what caused her death. >> ron mott this morning, thank you. president obama decided to delay executive action on immigration until after the midterm election. chuck todd, the new nmoderator f "meet the press," sat down with the president and asked him about that. >> made the decision to delay any action. what do you tell the person who gets deported before the election that the decision was essentially made in your hopes of saving the democratic senate? >> that's not the reason. couple of things i want to say about immigration. number one, i have been consistent about why this is important. the country is going to be better off if we have an immigration system that works. that has strong border security, that is -- that has streamlined our legal immigration system, so
8:08 am
the best and the brightest who want to stay here and invest here and create jobs here can do so, that families can be unified and that a system where the millions of people who are here in many cases for a decade or more who have american kids, who are neighbors, oftentimes our friends, they have a path to get legal by paying taxes, and getting above board, paying a fine, learning english if they have to. the good news is we have bipartisan support for that. >> chuck todd, good to see you this morning. big day for you and a lot to talk about. shall we start with the immigration question, which is really creating so much buzz this morning. as a matter of fact, a lot of the immigration advocates are calling it a slap in the face, the president promised to do something about immigration, unilaterally when he came back and the end of the summer. by taking this off the political table, isn't it in a way putting it back on the political table
8:09 am
for elections that are less than two months away? >> you know, very much so. and potentially he makes it even -- so he set up a criteria, you'll see, later in the interview, about what it is going to take for him to take executive action. he said basically the politics did shift, he did admit politics was involved in the decision. he said it is not about senate races, that it was the politics of what happened that it changed that happened after the surge of undocumented children that surged the border back during the summer. he did acknowledge the political shift there. but he said he's got to have a little more support behind him with the public if he's going to take executive action, which you find fascinating, because you're right, jose, if there is a republican senate, is really thinking the politics are going to have shifted on immigration after that, with the republican senate to do that, that it isn't going to be an even tougher political decision and even tougher political fight if he attempts to do this. so i guess he was in the proverbial rock and a hard place, a guy like mark pryor, the democrat in arkansas, who is
8:10 am
begging the president not to do this. and so they caved. >> chuck, you and i had off the record discussions with people at the white house and people are saying a lot more democrats that won't go on the record off the record were begging the president to delay this decision. do you think that regardless of what happened in the senate he's going to act forcefully after the elections? >> i don't know. you know, i don't know if he's going to do that. we'll see. i think he's going to -- i think it depends on the makeup of the senate, which democrats survive, which don't. i can tell you this, the irony of this is six months ago, some of the same democrats that were begging the president in the last six weeks to not do anything, six months ago were begging the president to put this issue on the table. so there is a little bit of political whiplash between the relationship of senate democratic leaders and the white house and this decision. but right now, with the president's approval rating basically below 40, in almost every one of these senate battlegrounds, i think the white

house felt politically they had no choice but to cave. >> and let's talk about isis overnight, more air strikes in iraq by united states armed forces. do you think the president is getting much closer to honing in to the policy he should have towards isis in syria? >> you know, jose, i think that's the meat of this interview. we ended up spending a lot more time on isis than maybe i planned going in, but he clearly now does have a strategy. he clearly now does know he's got to share that strategy with the american people, with the u.s. congress. you're going to hear a lot more detail about how he thinks he can go after isis both in iraq and syria. there is still a reluctance about how to go about doing it in syria, but an acknowledgement in this interview he has no choice but to do it. the question is who is going to help america do it. >> chuck todd, thanks, we'll all be watching. so good to see you. don't miss "meet the press" today. jenna has a look at this morning's other top stories. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> hi, everyone. shelling overnight near ta
