close to average, but then the storms get here so that's what you need to know. the "first alert" day, as you're heading home from work, you're going to notice stormy activity so expect the storms to roll through parts of the area as we roll through the afternoon and evening hours. right now, starting off in the pocono mountains, 69 degrees. 69 degrees in wilmington. 63 degrees in atlantic city. you what to allow extra time to get home from work today. we do expect late-day thunderstorm, damaging winds are possible. and lightning possible. the timing of the storms coming up in the "first alert," let's send it over to jillian for the "first alert" traffic. >> this is alive look at the blue route. a little bit of construction on the southbound near 76, no delays to report in that area. speaking of 76, this is what it's looking like in route 202

king of prussia area. it is quiet in both directions. 202 is free of incidents this morning. for drivers in new jersey, we have construction, near 73, exit 4, lane restrictions there. we're following breaking news in the oscar pistorius murder trial. a judge is expected to announce a verdict in this case soon. nbc10's tracy davidson is live in the digital operations center. tracy, what will happen in court today? >> experts say the verdicts will not be delivered simply like here in the united states. it actually could take hours or days. here's a live look at the courtroom in south africa. in south africa, a judge, not jurors, decide a verdict. within the last 15 minutes the judge began delivering the verdict. that judge will summarize each of the 37 witnesses who testified including pistorius.

then she will give us some of her own findings on how she reached the verdict. and then finally, she'll reach the verdict. pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend but he said he thought he was shooting at an intruder. if pistorius is found guilty of the most serious charge, he could face a minimum of 25 years in prison. we'll continue to monitor this feed. live in the digital operations center, tracy davidson, "nbc10 news." today the nation pauses to remember the 9/11 terror attacks. 13 years ago today, two hijacked planes crashed into the world trade centers in new york city. both towers burned and collapsed killing more than 2700 people. a third plane slammed into the pentagon in washington, d.c. killing 59 people on the plane and 125 military and civilian

people inside the building. a fourth plane went down in shanksville, somerset, pennsylvania, after passengers tried to retake the plane from hijackers. family members carried lanterns and placed them along the wall of names. there are events going on in our area to mark the 9/11 anniversary. nbc10's jesse gary is in bucks county. that county mourns the loss of more than a dozen people in the attacks. >> reporter: vai, that's right, good morning to you. there are going to be poems and words, speeches to mark the occasion. and then a single rose is going to be placed here at the garden of reflection in lower makefield, to represent the 18 people from this county who lost their lives in the attack. their names are along this memorial near the twin fountains of this memorial.

trying to take a look at the video, new video overnight showing crews in pen shocken, preparing for the anniversary in that community as people remember the worst attack on the u.s. mainland since the war of 1812. with commercial aircraft as weapons killing more than 3,000 people. >> it's sobering. you know, you still get checked up every time you do it. it always gets to you, i have a son that's a cop and a son that's a fireman, so it kind of gets to me every year. >> reporter: back live here in lower makefield, you can see one of the names of one of the persons killed in the attack. elaine grace day. coming up in the next hour, to say the legacy of 9/11 has left one woman still fight for greater safety and security aboard commercial airplanes. we'll talk about that in the next hour. we're live in bucks county this

morning, jesse gary, "nbc10 news." and of course, at the america remembers 9/11 on the 13th anniversary of the attacks there will be live coverage of several attacks coming up on the "today" show. and the united states is now on a mission to destroy isis in syria and iraq. that word from president obama during a prime time speech from the white house. he said the new campaign will include air strikes, army and training, syrian rebels and sending hundreds more military advisers to iraq. and here's new video released by the u.s. navy, it shows american fighter jets launching from the aircraft carrier "george h.w. bush" in iraq. >> we'll hunt down terrorists

who threaten our country wherever they are. that mean i will not hesitate to take action against isil in syria as well as iraq. if you threaten america, you will find no safe haven. >> president obama's plan to attack isis in syria will mark the first time the u.s. has conducted military inside that country. and here's new video this morning showing u.n. peacekeepers from fiji being held captive in syria. the video was posted on u tube. one of the fijian soldiers said everyone is being treated well by the military group in syria. fiji is an island nation in the south pacific. the ray rice case is now an nfl scandal. robert muller will conduct an investigation into how the nfl handled evidence in the domestic violence case. law enforcement said it sent a tape months ago.

commissioner roger goodell denied they saw the video before monday. hours after the video was posted online, the baltimore ravens fired their running back. the atlantic county prosecutor said rice never would have faced jail time, even if it had gone to trial. and new from overnight, a van lost control and flipped over several times eventually hitting and damaging a utility pole. this happened at river road in north 26th street in camden. police say people in the van suffered only minor injuries. >> about the same time in camden, a car crashed sending a woman to the hospital at westville avenue and north dudley street. police say a woman driving the car is in the hospital and listed in stable condition. and happening today, philadelphia city council will take up the issue of marijuana possession. yesterday mayor michael nutter

agreed on the meeting of the use of a small amount of marijuana. under the law if you're caught with fewer than 35 grams or an ounce. but if found smoking in public, it will be a $100 fine and community service. prosecutors and defense lawyers are asking the federal judge to step aside from the high profile case. the judge is presiding in the trial of three members of thomas mateusz, he is the man who shot and killed two women inside the new castle courthouse last year before taking his own life. his wife, son and daughter are charged with conspiracy and stalking in the case. last week, a federal prosecutor asked a judge to recuse himself because his name appears on a

hit list kept by the man. and also media reports of the alleged hit list could influence the jury's view of the judge and there's no time for the judge to make a decision. >> announcer: now, your nbc10 "first alert" weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. good morning. taking a live look outside. we're just seeing a few clouds and the clouds will increase as we head into the rest of today. we'll see our humidity going up. also our temperatures are going to go up on this thursday so a big change from what we saw yesterday. we have a "first alert" day which we expect to see thunderstorm activity closer to the time you head home from work. these are going to be isolated. we're going to see a line of thunderstorms. because it's happening right over your commute, we want to give you a heads-up. also, we could see damaging winds. that's a possibility with some thunderstorms we expect to see for the rest of today. the "first alert" for late thursday. that's due to the late-day

thunderstorms, damaging winds possible, lightning and heavy downpours all a possibility as we head through the rest of the afternoon. from philadelphia, mostly cloudy skies, 69 degrees, our humidity is at 84%. wind speeds out of the south at 6 miles per hour. a closer look right now, we're already seeing a little bit of light rainfall moving through ports of the poconos and lehigh valley. we have a large system that's going to come through as we head through the refuse of date. here's you the day is going to break down, with clouds increasing, heat increasing, temperatures close to 90 degrees. by 5:00 p.m., we'll notice light showers, then into the 5:00, 6:00, hour, as you're heading home from work, do expect to see light rainfall, even isolated thunderstorms. some of these thunderstorms could produce heavy downpours, lightning and damaged wind speeds. we'll continue to see a lot of these storms move towards the shore by the 9:00 hour and

last year. there's pistorius sitting there. today, the judge will summarize each of the 37 witnesses whoest itted. she's doing that at the moment. and it may last today and may even run into tomorrow. >> happening today, a big announcement from the philadelphia free library, and it's all thanks to the largest gift in its history. nbc10's katy zachry is live along the parkway. katy, this has to do with a major face-lift of the library? >> reporter: yeah, vai, is this a nearly $60 million renovation 19th and benjamin parkway and five neighborhood branches throughout the city. they already started work at this location. we walked through the empty steps yesterday. six floors of wall-to-ceiling shelves that recently housed hundreds of thousands of books. those volumes have been taken offsite in preparation for this space to be demolished and opened up. it will become a large airy

space similar to other rooms in the library. there will be room for technology support as well as commerce library for entrepreneurs. >> when you walk into barriers, that's not conducive to the work we're doing, really. so when you open up the spaces, it says, we want you here, take advantage of what's here. >> reporter: the bulk of the money from the renovations is coming from the william penn foundation. what we just showed you is just the beginning. a lot of work is being done at five branches throughout the city and we'll have a preview of that coming up later. reporting live, katy zachry, "nbc10 news." $90 million cash. that's the bid that a florida developer has put up for revel casino closed just last week. they confirmed the sale offer but said it's a starting figure. it's 4% of the $2.4 billion it

poconos and lehigh valley. it's all part of a larger system that's going to continue to shift closer to you as we head through the rest of today. it's going to take a while for the brunt to get here. you will notice spotty showers in the poconos and allentown. some are not as promising as yesterday, but we're still going to see them in the forecast as we head through the rest of tonight by 8:00 p.m., we do expect to see more thunderstorm activity near cape may. off the shore closer to midnight. by tomorrow, things clear up nicely. our temperatures are going to drop back. our average for this time of year, 80 degrees. nine degrees above that average today. but we are going to drop all the way into 78 as we head into tomorrow. for today, hot and humid, thunderstorms range. the seven-day forecast shows big drop in temperatures. and by sunday, take a look, the

low 70s. 4:21, if you're heading to work this hour, here's jillian mele in the "first alert" traffic center to show you where the trouble spots are, jill? >> good morning. there are not too many trouble spots out there just yet, vai. the area bridges are looking good. this is a look at the ben franklin bridge view from philadelphia. no delays there. we have construction we continue to follow on the blue route. in fact, the southbound side just wrapped up. we had active construction near 76. actually it looks like they may have a few cones set up. there's construction out here it could be on the move. so watch out on that 476 near i-76. and construction on the blue route near villanova. and on 295 northbound, that ramp is closed because of construction in that area, so keep that in mind as you're traveling through delaware. one city showing off with work that we're showing you next. plus, you could say one
