here's what we're following this morning. a pregnant woman shot and killed, her baby survives, but not for long. and the man she was with was also shot. we're live on the scene as investigators try to figure out what happened there. turning themselves in. that's what we're expecting today from three suspects in the attack of a gay couple in center city. and up for bid? revel casino in atlantic city goes on the auction block later this morning. there is more than one bid out there for it. and a live look this morning at the ben franklin bridge. all quiet on the roads right now. and we're a little warmer than we were yesterday morning at 56 degrees in the city right now, expecting another day of nice temperatures before some rain moves in. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today."

i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and that first alert forecast. yeah, bill, we're off to a warmer start than yesterday. >> not too bad, yeah. 56 degrees here at nbc 10. there are high clouds that have started to move into the area. that is part of what is helping to keep us a bit warmer this morning. clouds will be on the increase. can't really see them without any sunlight. we're almost three hours away from sunrise this morning, but we will see sunshine fade during the day as rain that is to the south, we're tracking showers through the carolinas and into virginia. that rain is going to be moving into our area for parts of the area later today. 51 right now in millville. it's 47 in pottstown. still chilly in some areas. 56 degrees in philadelphia. and it will be a warmer afternoon, in spite of the clouds. you'll see the clouds increase, but so will the temperature into the middle 70s later today. jillian mele is watching traffic this morning on a wednesday morning. good morning, jillian. >> good morning to you, bill. we're starting off with a couple problems for drivers in new jersey to be aware of.

we have an accident involving a tractor-trailer in kareneyes point right now, the new jersey turnpike approaching the delaware bridge. two lanes are blocked, so you could see a slowdown in the area. heading north to camden, last night, a water main break happened on the route 30 admiral wilson boulevard westbound approaching baird boulevard, but we have repair work still going on, so expect that out there. the right lane is blocked. finally, a live look at 95 for drivers in p.a. you can see we have cones set up on the southbound side out near the commodore barry bridge and route 420, just normal overnight construction that we're used to seeing, chris. let's get back to that breaking news we're following from overnight. a pregnant woman shot to death in philadelphia, her baby was delivered, but it died a short time later. nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us in philadelphia. katy, this was a double shooting, right? >> reporter: it was a double shooting, chris, and before we go on, this is the second time in less than two weeks that philadelphia police have been to a shooting scene where a

pregnant woman was shot and killed and then, sadly, subsequently, her baby has died. now, we are on the corner of 20th and nedro streets in the ogon section of the city. the shooting happened just before 1:00 a.m. police say multiple calls came in about the shooting, and very quickly, within a matter of under a minute, officers were on the scene and they found two victims on this sidewalk lying between this white chevy impala and this storefront right here. you can see just a slew of evidence markers on the sidewalk extending into the street on to 20th street. those are indicating where detectives have found bullet casings. so, when police got here, they didn't even wait for an ambulance to arrive. they rushed the victims to einstein hospital. unfortunately, that's where a 25-year-old pregnant woman was pronounced dead. she had been shot four times in the head, the arm and both legs. she was, police believe, eight months pregnant. there was a man who was found with her also suffering from

several gunshot wounds on the sidewalk. he's a 26-year-old man shot in the back and the leg. he is right now at einstein university hospital in critical condition. he is expected to survive. here's what police are saying about what doctors did at the hospital with the pregnant woman. >> the doctors did what they can. they delivered the baby, and they worked on the baby for over an hour, but the baby was pronounced dead at 2:18 a.m. and the information we're receiving, it's preliminary, but the female was eight months pregnant at the time. >> reporter: and we learned around 2:18 this morning that the baby girl who that woman was carrying also died. now, police say they have a vague description of one man running from the scene. homicide detectives are out here. there are also detectives talking to several witnesses who called police. there are surveillance cameras in the area. so, right now police are trying to get a hold of that video to see if it did capture the shooting. they expect to be out here for

the next hour or so collecting evidence. we'll be out here as well and bring you an update around 4:30. reporting live, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. here's what else we're following. three people are expected to turn themselves in to philadelphia police this morning on charges that they attacked a gay couple in center city. investigators say philip williams, kevin harrigan and katherine knott, all of bucks county, will be charged with assault and conspiracy. sources tell us knott is the daughter of police chief karl knott. last week, surveillance video showed a group of possible speblts walking near 16th and chancellor. you see the video there. the victims say they were beaten because they are gay, but lawyers for the alleged suspects say the alleged victims instigated the fight. the victims released this statement after learning of the charges to be filed. "thank you to the community for their help and support as well as the detectives who did a great job gathering details. we are thankful the d.a. is working so hard to make sure

this doesn't happen again in philadelphia." happening today, a bidding war for the closed revel casino in atlantic city. a florida developer, as we told you, has offered $90 million, but his lawyer tells us there are other bids out there as well. the auction gets under way in about five hours. nbc 10's jesse gary live in atlantic city. jesse, if this developer buys revel, is he talking about how soon he might have it up and running? >> reporter: chris, florida developer daniel stroub says he does not want this building, which is mostly dark right now, vacant for the entire winter. he says he could have it reopened within weeks if he wins today's auction. let's take a look at our video. but he's not the only person with designs on revel. there are several bidders in today's auction, although the exact number is not known. stroub's vision is to turn this glimmering jewel into a hub where great minds, as he calls it, would tackle problems, one of which, how to turn a profit in a property that cost $2.5 billion to build but never made

money. revel closed on the 2nd, followed a week later by trump plaza casino, which had been dying a slow death for years. four a.c. casinos have closed this year, sparking an employment crisis that could deepen with the trump taj mahal poised to fold in november. thousands of out-of-work casino workers could be joined by more unemployed workers. i talked with the mayor of a.c. last week. he tells me he doesn't believe they have reached bottom. he believes they are close to bottom. live on the boardwalk in atlantic city, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. >> and stay with nbc 10 news for continuing coverage of the casino crisis. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg will be in new york later this morning as the revel auction gets under way, so we'll keep that covered for you. also, you can visit nbc10.com for a deeper look at the economic impact that the casino closures are having on atlantic city. five casinos could close this year alone. in the philadelphia school budget crisis, pennsylvania governor tom corbett will sign the new cigarette tax linto law

which will provide much-needed money for philadelphia's struggling schools. the state senate passed that tax bill yesterday. the $2-per-pack tax will generate an estimated $49 million for the school district this year and $80 million in following years. some say this is a good start towards closing that budget gap but a long-term solution is still needed. it's already been plugged into the budget. so, it's good news, but quite frankly, it's not enough. >> now, governor corbett is set to sign that tax into law later this morning. it would only apply to cigarettes sold in philadelphia. stopping isis. that is the message president obama will bring to the u.n. today as he delivers his annual address to the general assembly. you're looking here at damage in syria following the first u.s.-led air strikes targeting isis there. people were seen sifting through the rubble of buildings there. witnesses said missiles hit

several terror group command centers, killing at least 52 isis militants. and we have new video this morning of the raid that killed two men suspected of abducting and murdering three israeli boys over the summer. israeli troops surrounded this building you see here and used explosives to get inside early yesterday morning. israel says the two palestinian suspects were affiliated with hamas. now, those three teens, including one who has family in ocean county, were kidnapped by hamas in june. their bodies were found three weeks later in the west bank. their killing helped spark a seven-week war between israel and hamas in gaza. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds are starting to move into the area, just some high clouds so far. mainly we're in the clear. this is a live view of center city from the adventure aquarium. a nice, clear view to start with and a cool morning once again, as temperatures have dropped down into the 50s for most of the area, but there are a couple spots in the 40s. more clouds are on the way as the day goes on, and that will

lead to rain. already tracking rain to our south. and with the rain that's on the way, that will really come tomorrow morning, we could see some heavy downpours in parts of the area. not everybody's going to get the heavy rainfall. satellite imagery. we are mainly in the clear right now, but to the south, this rainfall is falling in the carolinas, and that is on the move for our area later today. there you can see that rain that is pushing into parts of virginia as well. the heaviest rain remains offshore, but that could change overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning as this one rides up the coast to the north. during the day today, the rain stays out of the picture for most areas, though there is a chance of the first showers will reach the shore later today. sunshine to start with but clouds will be increasing and temperatures in the 70s. a little bit warmer than yesterday, in the middle 70s this afternoon. a closer look at the shore forecast when that rain may be moving in when i come back with the future weather. and now it's time to take a look at your traffic forecast for the morning.

ten minutes after 4:00 now. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at the highways. everything moving smoothly? >> depends where you're traveling. we're following an accident on the new jersey turnpike, on the southbound side as drivers approach the delaware memorial bridge, involving a tractor-trailer. two lanes are blocked in that area, so use caution there. but then you see highways like 76 and everything is clear here. this is 76 right near girard avenue. you can see traffic moving along just fine in both directions. drive times on 76 about 14 minutes both ways between the blue route and the vine. but i want to remind you, we have this construction project going on, 76 westbound, spring garden street on-ramp is closed. so, it's just the ramp. it's not affecting traffic on the highway itself, but that ramp is expected to be closed until late november. chris? a mysterious stench. we now know what caused a bad smell in several local communities over labor day. you've got to hear this one. plus, a new twist in the manhunt for an alleged cop killkill er. why neighbors are upset with police. and new allegations that the

4:14. we're following sad breaking news overnight. a pregnant woman shot to death in philadelphia's ogontz neighborhood. a live picture at the scene here. you can see the white car that was involved. the woman was inside that car. you see all the evidence markers out there where police found shell casings and other evidence. several shots were fired. the pregnant woman was killed. her baby girl was delivered but died a short time later. we just heard the chief inspector talk about how hard the medical personnel worked to try to keep that little girl alive. a man with the pregnant woman was also shot and is in critical condition. at this point, police have made

no arrests. we're on top of this and we'll let you know if anything develops this morning in that case. on to decision 2014 now. pennsylvania actually leads the nation in spending on political ads on tv, according to a new national survey. candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and the state legislature spent just less than $38 million through september 8th. that's the most of any state, according to the survey by the washington-based center for public integrity, and that total, of course, was inflated by the $10 million that democratic governor candidate tom wolf spent to jump-start his campaign against tom corbett. there is growing frustration this morning as police are now in their 11th day of searching for the man accused of killing a pennsylvania state trooper and wounding another trooper. this video comes from inside the search perimeter in monroe county, where there's still no sign of eric frein. residents who have been denied access to their homes and property during this manhunt are getting a little frustrated now.

state police say that they've been diligent in respecting the rights of the public while working to keep residents and officers safe. nbc 10 has learned what will happen if eric frein is caught. first, he'll be taken before a judge in stroudsburg. then he'll be brought back to pike county, where that ambush shooting occurred. nbc 10 news is working with nbc news and our nbc station in the poconos to bring you the latest developments in the manhunt. the trial is wrapping up today for two men accused of a deadly playground shooting in philadelphia. the fates of gentleman quan jordan and stanley postell are now in the hands of a jury. police say last april, those two were involved in a gun fight at the tustin playground on lancaster avenue. an innocent 17-year-old bystander, bernard scott, was shot and killed. two other young men are also charged in that shooting. a delaware county teacher is behind bars this morning, accused of having sex with a former student. bill barber, a teacher and coach at garnet valley middle school was arraigned yesterday. state police tell us that a

15-year-old girl sent her former coach nude photos. they say the two exchanged sexually explicit messages, and the alleged encounter happened inside the coach's office. >> now, the school did everything they were supposed to. as soon as they received the report, they contacted us. we were down there and able to interview the victim. >> now, this comes as a shock to people who rallied around barber and his family as they raised money for their 4-year-old daughter who has cancer. barber has been placed on leave from the school. the man accused of opening fire, killing an innocent 15-year-old girl, is now in police custody. 19-year-old darian person turned himself in around 7:00 last night, two days after the deadly shooting in the olney section of philadelphia. now, that happened just a few hours before person turned himself in as u.s. marshals busted open the door to his rowan street home. he wasn't there. on monday, 15-year-old aisha abdur-rhaman was walking with another girl on old york road in front of einstein hospital when

the shots were fired. she was hit and killed. police say she was an innocent bystander. >> he took somebody's baby away. that was her only girl. he took somebody's baby away for what? i have two daughters. if it were my daughter, i wouldn't be able to breathe! i wouldn't be able to breathe. >> there's a growing memorial near the scene of that shooting. family and friends tell us aisha's funeral will be held tomorrow. the other shooting victim, a 19-year-old man, is still in critical but stable condition. the driver of this tour bus that overturned in delaware on sunday, killing two people, has now been charged in their deaths. investigators say jinli zhao was driving too fast when that bus overturned on the exit ramp from route 1 to route 13 in new castle. a woman from new york and a woman from turkey were killed. more than a dozen people are still in the hospital. people fighting prescription drug abuse are calling for a new leader for the food and drug administration. they want the obama administration to replace commissioner dr. margaret hamburg. the groups say the agency has

contributed to an epidemic of prescription drug abuse under her leadership. the fda has come under fire since last october when it approved a new painkiller against the recommendation of its medical advisers. happening today, delaware governor jack markell will sign legislation that gives more money to volunteer fire and ambulance companies. the governor will sign three bills to pay for that increase. the first will tack on $10 extra for traffic tickets. the second bill will increase the tax paid by health insurers. the third will require state health insurance policies to cover the cost of ambulance runs and life support services. also happening today in northeast philadelphia, the transformation of philadelphia mills mall, formerly franklin mills, takes a big step when a new store opens. there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:00 this morning for a new walmart that brings with it 150 new jobs, and that's just part of the multimillion dollar renovation of philadelphia mills. the interior and exterior of that shopping center will be upgraded, including wi-fi, lounge areas and charging

stations. the mall's grand opening, grand reopening, i should say, is planned for next fall. we have new information this morning about the source of a bad odor that was detected across several counties back on august 30th. by detected, i mean smelled. peco says the chemical hexane was produced during cleaning operations on the interstate pipeline, and that's what caused the bad smell. peco says there was never any danger to the public. the pipeline pumps gas to a peco station, which then sends it to homes. mystery solved. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> we are watching for some clouds moving into the area. so far, just a few thin clouds in the region. temperatures are still cooling this morning. it's 56 degrees in philadelphia, but that's nine degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this time, which puts philadelphia in the 50s along with wilmington, northeast philadelphia and trenton. but go north and west, you see lots of 40s this morning. no sign of the 30s that we saw pop up for quakertown and other

parts of bucks county and even interior new jersey saw some 30s yesterday morning, while it's in the 60s right now for atlantic city and beach haven. newark is 52 degrees. most areas running a little bit warmer. but also a little bit cloudier at the shore. this is a live view from cape may from the marquee delafayette hotel. we'll be watching for clouds in philadelphia, but you'll see them arrive at the shore before they make it into the city. the rain is falling to the south. the clouds are going to be taking over, and that rain could be at the shore by late this afternoon. there you can see the clouds that are pushing into not only the shore areas but delaware, central and southern delaware seeing more cloud cover than philadelphia is right now. and the future weather shows those clouds will be on the increase. by 10:00 this morning, clouds increasing in philadelphia, 66 degrees, mostly cloudy at cape may at 70 degrees. and by late this afternoon, you'll see the rain approaching offshore. by the early evening hours, the rain will start to fall in

delaware, cape may and into the atlantic city area by the early evening hours. and look at the fast progress that rain will be making. but during the day today, it will stay dry. 61 degrees. a cool start at 9:00. by lunchtime, mostly cloudy in philadelphia and dry at 4:00 this afternoon, 73 degrees. rain, yes, and then a warm-up. the seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. and at 4:22, we already have some scenes to watch out for on the roadways out there. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jillian mele will bring us up to speed. >> that's right, chris. an accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer. happened a few hours ago, but it's still out there now. new jersey turnpike southbound approaching the delaware memorial bridge. two lanes are still blocked in that area, so traffic can get by, but watch for a tap of the brakes in that area. heading to camden right now, there was a water main break that happened around 7:00 last night on the route 30 admiral wilson boulevard, the westbound side right as you approach baird boulevard, but you can expect to see some repair work going on this morning. so, the right lane is blocked in that area.

and then the blue route is looking clear in both directions. this is the blue route right near 76. drive times on 476 between 95 and 76, that will take you about 18 minutes both ways. chris? well, rosh hashanah is off to an early celebration in camden county. rousing applause! nbc 10 was at the jewish community center in cherry hill yesterday, where members and students heard the sound of the chouafar. that's the blowing of the horn that marks the beginning and end of the jewish high holy days. a bumpy landing for a southwest flight. next, the emergency that forced them all to get out a different way once the plane landed, including the old emergency chute there. plus, the cross-country adventure that has a happy ending for this dog and a bucks county family.

police in new castle county hope you can help identify a person they say may have helped set two fires over the weekend. police posted this shot of the shirtless man there. they say early saturday morning, someone tried to set fires on victoria court. police want you to call 911 if you see that man or if you recognize him or notice anything suspicious. philadelphia police are looking for some car vandals. look at this. at least five cars park wednesday morning were found with broken windshields and scratch marks from keys. the owners said the whole thing is frustrating. >> nobody contacted us, so i had to find out this morning when i came out to go to work. so, now i can't drive because the crack in the windshield. >> now, police are looking at

surveillance video that they hope will lead them on an arrest. a dog is back in pennsylvania after ending up on the other side of the country. gidget the 7-year-old jack russell terrier, was found near portland, oregon, more than four months after going missing from this area. a microchip implanted in gidget allowed workers at an animal shelter in oregon to find her owner. it's still not clear how she got from bucks county to oregon. only gidget knows, and she's not giving up anything. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> clear skies over center city for now, but that's going to be changing during the day today. right now, 55 degrees and dry here at nbc 10. jillian mele is watching a quieter morning this morning, jillian? >> you know what? on a lot of the highways, it is pretty quiet. a live look at center city, philadelphia, the vine street expressway out near 76. the vine is clear the entire length in both directions, but unfortunately, i am following two accidents in new jersey. i'll have those details coming up in just a few minutes.
