parents are on edge and a local school staff on alert after a 4-year-old boy died of enterovirus d-68. what the school is doing this morning to try to keep other children safe. and another health concern. the battle against ebola. the u.s. is reviewing its action plan as a patient is being monitored in this area. and we are waking up to another chilly start this morning. most of you in the 40s, but some of you are in the upper 30s right now, as we take a live look at center city. the sun, though, will warm us up later in the day. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today" on this monday. i'm chris cato. and let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. and bill, yes, it was a crisp fall morning yesterday morning and we're off to the same kind

of start. >> we are, and we are more than three hours away from sunrise this morning, so the temperatures are certainly falling right now. as you mentioned, some 30s and the possibility of frost in some of the suburbs, but not in center city. that's a live view from the city, which is nice and clear this morning, which has allowed philadelphia to drop into the 40s. 49 degrees in philadelphia, but look at pottstown and allentown and the pocono mountains, all in the upper 30s. and we could see some 30s in new jersey, interior new jersey, millville, atlantic city both at 40 degrees right now. skies nice and clear. sunshine will be bright, but it will still be chilly at 7:00. 54 degrees at 9:00 and the wind will be kicking in. 65 degrees at lunchtime. we'll go through it hour by hour, neighborhood by neighborhood when i come back with the future weather, but first, katy zachry has traffic. good morning, katy. >> good morning, bill. as you can see behind me, we have flashing lights on 76 eastbound. this is 76 right at conshohocken. so, these flashing lights are because of a tractor-trailer

that's disabled. it's over in the right-hand lane in the shoulder area, but there is a significant fuel spill associated with that. so, that's why you have the police activity out here. the right lane is blocked and you can see the traffic is being forced over to the left-hand lane. we do have the typical construction delays on the ben franklin bridge westbound, if you're headed in from camden into center city, philadelphia, because of track work on the patco line. and then we have an accident newly into our system in the last 15 minutes. this is in new jersey on monessen road at dealtie drive. police are directing traffic around that. 4:02 now. happening today, officials in a mercer county community are monitoring all cases of respiratory illness in their school district after a second child contracted enterovirus d-68. in the first case, as you know, resulted in the death of 4-year-old eli waller last month. now, this is all happening in hamilton township, where both boys attended a preschool there. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in hamilton township for us this morning.

jesse, the district met with parents last night to listen to their concerns. so, what did the district tell them? what's being done to protect kids that go to this particular school? >> reporter: chris, district officials are disinfecting all the services inside this school, and later this morning, bus drivers are going to get detailed instructions on what to do to protect their vehicles. this increased concern comes after 4-year-old eli waller died in his sleep last month, the cause confirmed as enterovirus d-68. the toddler attended a preschool program at the school and showed mild symptoms before succumbing. his father released a statement to the community, reading in part "my wife and i simply cannot thank you nearly enough for the roles you played in eli's life. while our hearts are breaking at his passing, our hearts are also over flowing with overwhelming gratitude." a lot of parents are worried two confirmed cases could grow beyond that. i'll have that part of the story in 30 minutes. live in mercer county, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. >> certainly reason for concern. count on nbc 10 to keep you up to the minute on any news of the

spread of that virus. just visit nbc10.com for the symptoms of enterovirus d-68 as well as tips on how to keep your family safe. also this morning, we're learning more about an ebola investigation in this area. a child from liberia is being monitored at a hospital in dover. that child was taken to the emergency room at bayhealth kent general on saturday. the hospital is not saying why the patient was brought there, but out of "an abundance of caution," the child was admitted to a private isolation room and the hospital followed the cdc guidelines for investigating ebola. now, hospital officials say the cdc determined that the likelihood of the child having ebola is extremely low, so it will not run tests for that disease. however, the patient will continue to be observed in the hospital until the cdc and doctors determine it's safe to discharge him or her. nbc 10's christine maddela's joining us live from our digital operations center with more on, christine, other patients in the u.s. being treated for ebola. >> right. the cdc officials say they're

being flooded with hundreds of calls every single day about ebola. and for the first patient diagnosed here in the united states, things went from bad to worse over the weekend. the liberian man who is being hospitalized with ebola in dallas is in critical condition. health officials continue to closely monitor ten people who definitely had contact with thomas duncan. investigators also found a homeless man who needs to be watched because he also may have had contact with duncan. american journalist ashoka mukpo is expected to arrive in nebraska today, where he'll be treated after testing positive for ebola. last night, a specialized medevac jet started the journey home from liberia. the journalist was working with nbc news in liberia when he was diagnosed with the virus. president obama, on the other hand, he's going to meet with members of his national security team and senior staff to discuss ebola today. the president ordered up to

3,000 u.s. military personnel to west africa in order to train health care workers there. they'll also build more than a dozen field hospitals. now, top federal health officials say they're opposed to placing a ban on travelers from ebola-infected countries. they warned that shutting down borders could get in the way of efforts by aid workers to stop the spread of the deadly virus. those in favor of the ban, though, say it would help ensure public safety. now, the plane carrying the american journalist is expected to make a brief stop in maine this morning. then it will be on to nebraska, where he will be treated. live in the digital operations center, christine maddela, nbc 10 news. >> christine, thanks. and you can count on nbc 10 to follow every development on the deadly ebola outbreak. for updates any time, logon to nbc10.com. six minutes after 4:00 now. new from overnight, a 35-year-old man was shot and killed in west philadelphia. nbc 10's camera was at 60th and

girard avenue as police looked for evidence. no arrests and no word on what led to the shooting. also this morning, a man is in critical condition after being shot five times in north philadelphia. the 20-year-old man was hit along 24th and somerset streets around 2:00 this morning. police are still looking for the shooter. happening today, the trial is set to begin for a philadelphia man who's accused of shooting out the window of a woman's car during a road rage incident. police say shatia ali used a bb gun to shoot out the window in may. the woman was driving with her 4-month-old daughter in the car and another woman. police say ali was working as a delivery driver when he followed the car for a few blocks and then shot out the rear window. you can see the damage at broad and lombard streets. nobody was hurt. today a philadelphia man accused in a queue druple shooting will be arraigned. leonard hampton is facing murder charges. police saturday in august he started a fight and then called for backup.

according to investigators, three friends showed up and someone fired shots. three innocent bystanders were hit along with the intended target. we have more on the pennsylvania pornographic e-mail scandal. state attorney general kathleen kane says she's trying to comply with a judge's request for information about all of the officials involved. in an e-mail to the chief justice, kane says she would hand over any pornographic e-mails involving any judicial officer if her office is allowed to do so. she says it's under review by her civil division. two state officials resigned, chris abruzzo, seen here, and dep lawyer glenn parno. they were among several state employees who kane revealed shared pornographic e-mails on state computers. the head of cooper health system and his wife will be remembered this week. the couple died after a fire was set inside their new jersey home. a memorial service for john and joyce sheridan will be held at 11:00 tuesday morning at the patriots theater at the war memorial in trenton. a private funeral is also

planned. now, the couple, as you'll recall, was found inside their burning bedroom of their home in somerset county last sunday. investigators say the fire was intentionally set. it was arson. but still no word yet on who may have set it or if the fire is what caused the couple's death. nine minutes after 4:00 now. a young cancer patient from camden is living his dream in front of the camera and behind it. >> look at the camera. say "action." >> action. >> that's 10-year-old tyshawn. he is suffering from stage three cancer, but yesterday he had the chance to direct and act in a pilot for a new series alongsize actor clifton powell. powell is in camden working on a show called "chase street," set and shot in camden. according to his mother, tyshawn is powell's number one fan. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> skies are clear this morning and the temperature is plummeting right now.

we're seeing 30s in many areas north and west. we're watching for some areas of frost, but we'll see lots of sunshine today and it will wind up warmer than it was yesterday. sunny skies today. we are tracking some showers. the first showers could be here tomorrow. right now we're looking at 38 degrees in doylestown. philadelphia is 49. and at the shore, cape may is 46 degrees at the airport, but it's a little warmer right along beach avenue. nice and clear, and it will be dry today at the shore, but the temperatures, they're falling. 43 in northeast philadelphia. look at the 30s for horsham. chester springs is now at 36 degrees. that's in the frost zone this morning along with quakertown at 36. and still coming down the temperatures for pottstown and allentown. so, very chilly start, and with clear skies, those temperatures will continue to fall. as far as clouds are concerned, you can see they've already arrived in western pennsylvania, really not in the cards for us until tomorrow. your hour-by-hour forecast. 10:00 this morning, 60 degrees

in philadelphia, 40s to the pocono mountains, while reading is at 55 degrees. and then we're into the 70s, but just barely, at 3:00 this afternoon. take a closer look at the coming rain when i come back. 11 minutes after 4:00. let's get a check of traffic to see how your early monday morning drive is shaping up. nbc 10's katy zachry has that. katy, any problems yet? >> hi, chris. a few things for drivers to be aware. starting in new jersey, westville on all monessen road at adelphi drive, there is an accident that happened within the last half hour and police are out there directing traffic around it. keep that in mind if you're headed in the westville area. a live look at 422 at creek road. the typical construction right now should be lifting between the 5:00 and 6:00 hour. it's not tying up anything right at 42 at creek road. we have something to slow you up a little bit. 76 eastbound right at conshohocken, you can see there are police out there.

his body, putting it in a suitcase and tossing it in the chesapeake bay. the appeal of 41-year-old melanie maguire has been rejected. maguire claimed her legal team was ineffective during her 2007 trial and is currently serving a life sentence. a newly released indictment reveals just how far a group of philadelphia ironworkers are accused of going to get work. the defendants from ironworkers local 401 are accused of using threats and violence to force contractors to hire union members. they're accused of setting fire to a quaker meeting house just a few days before christmas in 2012. the indictment also says the group slashed tires, grabbed rivals by the throat and blockated work sites. 8 of 12 philadelphia ironworkers have pleaded guilty in the scandal. the others go to trial next year. dozens of philadelphia police officers came together in silence at the same time college graduates in vermont were listening to a commencement address given by a convicted cop killer.

>> that's members of the fop lodge 5 gathering at the memorial at 13th and locust for officer daniel faulkner. they wanted to show support for faulkner's widow, marie. yesterday, kids at the college listened to a recorded speech given by mumia abu-jamal, faulkner's killer in 1991. >> the nation is in deep trouble, largely because of old thinking domestically and globally has led us into the morass that the nation now faces. >> abu-jamal's speech was played for about 20 students receiving degrees from the same school where he graduated, goddard college. abu-jamal is serving a life sentence for the murder of philadelphia officer faulkner. happening today, delaware governor jack markell will hold an event as part of domestic violence awareness month. last month in delaware, close to 24,000 domestic violence cases were reported to law enforcement. the court issued just over 1,500 orders for protection from abuse. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clear skies this morning. it is chilly outside once again, 30s and 40s right now. 40s in the city. it's a clear view from center city. right now 49 degrees in philadelphia with winds just at 3 miles an hour. a light wind and clear skies and dry air. humidity's at 69%. that's when the temperatures come down in a hurry, and we're seeing that this morning. live view of museum of art and beyond. no sign of any clouds here. no showers today, but there are some showers in our future. you can see them already in northwestern pennsylvania and the ohio valley. that's part of the system that's going to be entering the picture for us for tomorrow. for today, sunny skies and breezy and a rebound. yesterday we were stuck in the low 60s for high temperatures. tomorrow it will be into the low 70s along with today with winds gusting to 25.

we'll take you to breaking news real quick involving an accident on the highways out there. this is a live picture from the scene. and this is happening in gloucester county. and you can see right there, it looks like some medical personnel on the scene of that crash. the driver of a vehicle has been killed. that's what we know. let's get more from nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. katy, where is this happening? >> yeah, chris. so, i am just getting that new information. i'm actually going to -- this is in westville in gloucester county. we are hearing that the road around that is closed. as i was headed over here, i just got information about this. so, when i see you in about five minutes, we will have this information for you. but if we could go now to my computer, where there is something going on on 76 eastbound right at the conshohocken curve, there's a disabled tractor-trailer that's in the shoulder right now, and it is affecting traffic because there's a significant fuel spill associated with it.

so, one lane is blocked. you're having to go around it. but as you can see, it's not affecting drive times on 76 right now. so, on route 422 eastbound, the ramps to and from armand hammer boulevard, they are closed because of long-term construction and will be closed through november. chris? well, it's certainly not your typical job. this man in china has been tasked with protecting tourists from monkeys. there are hundreds of these wild monkeys in mt. amai that they absolutely love to pester the tourists. so, this guy runs around with a sling shot -- a sling shot now, that's his weapon -- to help protect people from the monkeys. he says the job is so demanding that he actually spends more time with the monkeys than his own family. looks like he's feeding one there. that's not going to help keep the monkeys away. job security, i guess? well, possessier than monkeys were the st. louis rams yesterday for the eagles. boy, they wouldn't go away. the eagles are 4-1 now after yesterday's win, but after

getting out to a 27-point lead against the rams, they had to hold on tight. the eagles special teams once again came in big, scoring the first touchdown here on this blocked punt return for a touchdown. this is the third straight game the birds special teams have scored, thank goodness. the defense also added a score, returning a fumble for a td. the rams battled back from a 34-7 deficit, but with under a minute to go in the game, that was the final play as the rams are trying to drive for the go-ahead score. birds win it 34-28, outlasting the rams. next week, though, should be much tougher. the giants are resurgent and it is "football night in america." the division rival giants, and the game is right here on nbc 10. be sure to stick with us after the game for our live postgame show. we'll break down the matchup and talk with players, coaches and fans. and in case you missed it, there was an emotional tribute during last night's game at gillette stadium as the patriots showed their support for a daughter of the rival team member. this is devon still. you probably know his story. he's a defensive tackle from the

cincinnati bengals. he's from wilmington. during a time-out in the third quarter, the patriots cheerleaders switched up their uniforms. they wore still's jersey. now, these are the patriots cheerleaders. as a video played on the big screen in support of still's daughter, 4-year-old leah. she was diagnosed over the summer with stage four neuroblastoma. >> it's one point that stuck out to me. she was crying. and i remember her looking at me and said to me, "dad, this is all your fault. you should have never brought me to the hospital." i broke down crying, because i didn't know what to say. >> now, leah's being treated at children's hospital of philadelphia. well, the summer is long gone, but the ocean city boardwalk has been packed with hundreds of participants in the fourth annual hero walk yesterday. that event raises awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and encourages people to use a designated driver when

there is a new memorial in washington, d.c., for a special group of veterans. president obama helped dedicate the new americans disabled for life memorial. it pays tribute to the men and women whose lives have been forever changed in service to the u.s. the president told the crowd that we must always take care of the veterans who have fought in battle and continue to fight in their recovery. >> when our wounded veterans set out on that long road of recovery, we need to move heaven and earth to make sure they get every single benefit, every
