the real health threat. new this morning, why a local doctor says something other than enterovirus 68 and ebola should be our new concern. showers moving through the region just ahead of our morning commute and heavy rain late this evening. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today on this tuesday morning, i'm chris cato. les begin with bill henley. >> just some light showers off and on to begin with. steadier showers in the lehigh valley and meantime cloudy skies for the entire area. this is a cloudy view from

center city from high atop the melon bank building. the clouds will break during the day and producing light showers just moving in to south philadelphia with light, but steady rainfall and isolated, moderate showers moving through burkes county and into the allentown area, lehigh county getting some of that steadier rainfall and more showers, light, scattered showers to our southwest. so, we'll get a break and then we'll get a few more showers. the temperatures. well, we're getting a break from the chill that we experienced the last couple mornings. we're at 66 degrees right now in philadelphia. the temperatures are coming down right now. we will be around 60 degrees with scattered showers and by 9:00 breaks of sunshine and a chance of oan isolated shower as the wind picks up at noontime today and then we'll be up to 70 degrees. a look at the future weather hour hour-by-hour when we come back.

>> good tuesday morning to you at home. let's talk about 95. overnight construction on the northbound side out near route 291. little bit of activity on the shoulder and all the lanes are open and that's definitely a good start to the morning for drivers there. right as you approach route 3, we have some construction, the left lane is blocked and is expected to be blocked until 9:00 this morning and then finally in nmginaew jersey no problems to report. 295 and creek road, we have just a few drivers out there right now. no accidents to report there, chris. new from overnight, nearly 100 people are out of their homes after a fire at a delaware county apartment building. started at the glen cross apartments. two people were taken to the hospital for breathing in too much smoke. some of the displaced residents are spending the night at the firehouse and getting some help

from the red cross there. a man is in critical condition after being shot several times in camden. this happened around 10:30 on purshing street and police tell nbc 10 that the victim is in his 60s. so far investigators have not made an arrest and they have no motive for the shooting. doctors at children's hospital of philadelphia are monitoring five patients with acute muscle weakness this morning. they say it's possible those children have enterovirus 68 the virus that has sickened hundreds of kids across the country. the centers of disease control and prevention are testing those cases. doctors say an mri has revealed changes in the spine of two of the newest patients, the ones with the acute muscle weakness. parents tell nbc 10 they're concerned the virus is spreading more rapidly. >> scary because i have two small children.

>> as doctors at chop await results, the local health departments say you should avoid contact with anyone who is sick and wash your hands frequently and disinfect surfaces regularly. and while that virus is a cause for concern, nbc 10 jesse gary talked to a local doctor who said our focus right now, jesse, should be on something else. what's that? >> chris, we're talking about the annual flu virus and more of a problem because of the time of year. health professionals say the enterovirus has been a problem since the '60s and usually tapers off in the fall. the cases we've seen so far unusual but the flu bug, by comparison, affects many more people. >> flu season is picking up. more people die of the flu than ebola and certainly enterovirus. >> mark wittman said the flu bug is a dangerous virus to catch.

start digging through the numbers, tell you why. later in the morning, we'll talk about where you can get the free shots later today. chris? on to the ebola virus now. president obama says we don't have a lot of margin of error when it comes to dealing with ebola. the u.s. will work to add additional passenger screenings at some u.s. airports where people arriving from west africa. the cdc has sent ebola charts to hospitals nationwide. monitoring several cities with west african populations including philadelphia. a nurse at a hospital in spain is the first person known to catch ebola outside. that nurse is being treated now in isolation. officials at a hospital in dallas are using an experimental drug to treat the first person

in the u.s. and the nbc news freelance photographer who came down with ebola is being treated at a hospital in nebraska this morning. he arrived in omaha yesterday from liberia where he caught the virus. he was able to walk off the plane to a gurney and was taken to hospital by ambulance. the man accused of killing two women inside their northeast philadelphia home is expected to appear in court. faces murder charges for the shooting deaths of 67-year-old dolly evans and ruby thomas. those two women had taken in the 25-year-old suspect to keep him from being homeless. on august 23rd he tried to rob one of the women before killing both of them execution style. a former philadelphia education teacher is facing a judge today. accused of sexually assaulting one of her students. a 14-year-old boy testified that

amatto had sex with him several times this past spring. surrendered to police in june and she has a pretrial hearing this morning. new information this morning in the case of a south jersey man accused in the 19 79 murder of a boy in new york city. pedro hernandez did understand his mirranda rights before he confessed. now, last week a defense psychologist said hernandez likely did not understand his right to remain silent because he has the iq of someone with an intellectual disability. testimony could wrap up in a hearing when that suspect's videotape confession could be allowed at trial. where he was working in 1979, strangling the boy and then dumping his body in the trash. the boy's remains have never been found. hernandez pleaded not guilty. as the manhunt continues for eric frein in the poconos cnn is

reporting that police have found a letter apparently written by frein according to that report the hand-written letter details how he shot two pennsylvania troopers outside the barracks. one affthep toers died in the ambush 25 days ago. the letter did not mention a motive and they're not saying where it was found. a man who died in a hit and run crash after picking up his grandson from football practice will be laid to rest today. over that scene in east mount erie with 73-year-old david wilson was killed in his crash. police say the driver of the other car was this man, dion hunter. they say he was speeding and ran a stop sign before crashing into wilson's car. he was arrested after leaving the scene and faces several charges now including homicide by vehicle. the head of cooper health system and his wife will be remembered at a memorial service

today. that couple died after a fire was set in their home. governor chris christie and former new jersey governor tom keen and christy woodman will attend the memorial. investigators say the fire is arson, but still no word yet who may have set the fire or if the fire is what caused the couple's death. we are tracking some showers this morning, clouds moved in overnight and light rain showers in parts of the area, moderate showers moving through the r redding area right now. not an all-day rainfall. we'll see clouds and some breaks of sunshine during the day, though there is a slight chance of shower during the day, more likely we'll get some storms tonight and a slight risk of severe weather for parts of our area coming through tonight. right now, allentown 62 degrees.

at the airport in northeast philadelphia, 65. we do have some showers in the area and millville is 64 degrees and this is right along broad street this morning. if you look in the lights, you can see the rain coming down and that's not the only location. look at airport road the allentown area, it is damp this morning as steadier rainfall is falling there. now, the rain will break. we'll get some more showers moving through and also some breaks of sunshine. this is the first band that is coming through. the next round will come in a few hours after we get a little bit of a break. but just enough to cause umbrellas going up this morning, first thing this morning in philadelphia. here's a steadier rainfall. quickly moving through burkes county and now into the allentown area and into the pocono mountains. the future weather shows by 9:00, 10:00, we'll get some breaks of sunshine and then there's a chance of an isolated shower right around early afternoon. just after noon today.

4:14. nbc 10 on the scene of breaking news as a vacant house burns in philadelphia. a live picture provided no one inside as far as investigators know at this point. the house is vacant.

you can see the smoke coming from the inside. you can see smoke from the rooftop. firefighters are up there putting out hot spots. this is at ninth north philadelphia. you may see some impact to streets around ninth and dolphin. streets being closed to fight that fire if you're out on the road early this morning. we'll monitor it and let you know if anything develops there in that house fire. four high school football players, including this man here are charged with a series of armed robberies in ocean county. this is devon delaney. the other suspects are being identified because they're juveniles. police say the group committed three robberies in lakewood over the weekend and two in toms river last month. that video shows the arrest of delainey delaney. his son is not guilty and tells us he is a "good guy" just like o.j. simpson. 4:15. happening today, the official

opening of a new performing arts and recreation center in philadelphia. this has something for everyone. a ceremony held at venice island. it's quite a facility right there on the schuylkill. nbc 10 ka tty zachary is out there. >> just a little shower dissipating over the next few minutes. the biggest difference between this rec center behind me is its theater. workers putting the finishing touches yesterday on the 250-seat theater when we got a sneak peek. the first rec center in philadelphia to house a professional performing arts space. the outside space is just as impressive. basketball and volleyball courts and amp theater. the water used for that spray garden is recycled back into the system and even the landscaping was designed to make the most use of the rain water. water is a big topic out here if you hadn't gathered that.

the philadelphia water department was the main agency behind this project and why, well i'm working on that story coming up in the next half hour. k katy zachary. lawmakers in harrisburg want your input on the five-year plan for the outdoor recreation program. this five-year plan will keep the state eligible for federal land and water conservation funding. tonight's meeting is at 5:00 on north 20th street in philadelphia. today the mayor will announce a multi-million redevelopment plan that's happening at the tri-town plaza on route 70. the $15 million upgrade will create hundreds of jobs, according to the mayor's office and generate revenue for local xhe economy. a different kind of alarm may wake some of you up this morning if you live near smyrna kent county. the state police will be testing the sirens for the salem and

nuclear generating stations. if you hear the sirens go off between 9:00 and 11:00 this morning, no fear, it's just a test. tracking some showers this morning. really not a lot to them, just some very light showers that are moving through the area. clouds over center city, no, not much of the way in rain in center city the rest of the area seeing steadier rainfall and now philadelphia international reporting showers in the area, but look at the temperatures. 66 degrees. that's 17 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. it's really tapered off. broad street and lehigh. barely any rain coming down right now with a steady light shower that moved through to start with. this is a system that is staying with us during the day today. heavier showers way to the west and just light showers waiting in the wings for later in the

morning, but this is what we're dealing with right now. the steadiest rainfall moving through the allentown area into the polk area. very light showers for norris town, philadelphia and extending into new jersey and parts of delaware and barely getting any rainfall right now. but, there is a chance we'll see more showers during the day and the next round of showers fizzle and we'll get breaks and by lunchtime and early this afternoon, we'll see a few raindrops coming down. the heavier showers will really hold off until this evening. 5:00 this afternoon get some sunshine to push our temperatures to the middle 70s and then clouds are back late tonight and look at the heavy showers and thunderstorms lining up to the north and west. there is a potential for severe weather pushing through parts of eastern new jersey as those showers come through tonight and then we'll be clearing out for tomorrow. and we do have some sunshine in the seven-day, that's coming up in the next half hour. 19 minutes after 4:00, let's

take an early look at traffic this morning to see if there is any delays or potential for delays out there. jillian mele has that. >> we have wet roads in the lehigh valley and dealing with this fire location at dolphin and ninth. take diamond street if you need to get around it. that's the westbound side right past the vine street expressway. this is the tail end of some overnight construction out there. not causing any slow downs, but keep in mind we have that active construction right now on 76. no construction and no accidents to report on the vine street expressway. the entire length is in the clear. this is the vine right near eighth street as drivers make their way out 295. the vine is clear, 95 for the most part is also pretty quiet. just a little bit of that overnight construction wrapping up on the northbound side. 4:20. boy, monet davis doesn't get a break. she's teaming up with spike lee. the famous director posted this photo on instagram.

discuss new legislation that will give the air force a cheaper, but safe option upgrading the aircraft they have. learning at the library. adults in the garden state can learn high school degrees to an online program. the program will be free for the students because of grants from the state government and from the clinton global initiative. to start, though, this is just open to 125 people. they plan to expand it if a lot of people areni interested. students have to be screened and after they enroll students will doonline course work anywhere. they will have 18 months to complete their courses and are expected to take an average of eight months. tracking some showers this morning. light showers to begin with, but there is the potential for some heavy weather on the way later on. right now, it's 65 degrees.
