election eve is here. the final push for votes under way, and we are breaking down the big races that you'll see on your ballot tomorrow. your family may vote to crank up the thermostat some more this morning. we're off to a cold start in philadelphia, 38 degrees in the city, colder in the burbs, and as you can see, pretty windy out there right now as we look at the flags blow atop the aramark building. it was blustery yesterday, wasn't it? good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today" on this monday. i'm chris cato. let's get to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast. hopefully, things are going to warm up later today, right? >> yes, hopefully, they will. right now, they're coming down. those temperatures have dropped into the 30s for most of the

area, and there's still a bit of a breeze, though nowhere near as windy as yesterday. winds are in the process of dying down. there's a live view from center city, where it is 38 degrees right now with the wind at 9 miles an hour. temperatures across the area mostly in the 30s. millville 34, 39 in trenton, pottstown is at 38 degrees. factor in the wind and it feels like it's below freezing in philadelphia right now. 31 the windchill. 28 is what it feels like in allentown. so, a cold start, but we will see sunshine today. look at the warm-up, from 39 at 7:00 to 49 at 9:00, into the upper 50s by lunchtime. when i come back in less than ten minutes, we'll go through it hour by hour with the future weather. but first alert traffic reporter katy zachry is watching things on a monday morning. good morning, katy. >> good morning, bill. the biggest story of the morning for our early-morning drivers, you said it, the cold. it is cold out there, but we're going to start on 76 in philadelphia. this is a live look at spring garden. you can see drive times are great at this hour. 14 minutes in both directions

between the vine and the blue route. a construction alert for drivers who are trying to access 76 westbound from spring garden. long-term construction project that should wrap up later this month, but you can't access it from spring garden. you need to take girard and that will let you access 76 westbound. for drivers on 422 eastbound, the ramps to and from armand hammer boulevard, they are closed for another long-term construction project. that should be wrapping up also later this month. finally, for drivers in new jersey, this is a live look at the 42 freeway right at creek road. you can see it's an active construction zone, but it's not tying things up right now. chris? all right, before we get to the election news, a couple of breaking stories here to get to new from overnight. police in montgomery county are investigating this crash after an suv slammed into a utility pole. this happened on haverford road near andover road in lower merion. officers say the driver lost control, hitting the pole, which as you can see there, snapped. that person was not hurt.

also new overnight, investigators trying to find the cause of a fire at this apartment building in north philadelphia. it started just after 11:00 last night on north cammack street. everyone was able to make it out of that building safely. all right, it is november 3rd, election eve. just over 24 hours until voters will go to the polls for the midterm elections. the biggest race, of course, that everyone is watching in this area this morning is the battle for pennsylvania governor. governor tom corbett will be in our area today, in west chester. democratic challenger tom wolf will make stops in lancaster and pittsburgh. nbc 10's jesse gary is following this race and others for us closely this morning. and jesse, tom wolf has to be feeling good on this election eve. he's leading in most of the polls, right? >> reporter: exactly right, chris. as a matter of fact, the democrat challenger has a double-digit lead heading into the final day of campaigning. the two top issues for voters here in pennsylvania this november, education funding and income tax reform, but neither is expected to send people out to cast ballots in record numbers. historically, voter turnout has

not topped 40% in pennsylvania. a big disappointment to many election watchers. >> these elected representatives make decisions that impact your everyday life -- taxes, education spending, and you should have a voice in those representatives who are making the decisions. so, all of the seats in the pennsylvania house and -- >> and if the polls are any indication, voters may have already made their decision about the governor of pennsylvania. but there is a warning about jumping to conclusions. and i'll talk more about that coming up in 30 minutes, chris. >> all right, jesse. well, in the final push for votes over the weekend, the candidates for governor in pennsylvania had some big names campaigning with them. governor corbett was joined by new jersey governor chris christie in a rally in bucks county. corbett, as jesse mentioned, has been trailing wolf by double digits in most of the polls. governor christie called his keystone state counterpart a tough competitor. >> he's a tough competitor.

he's made taxes even lower in pennsylvania. he's made regulation even lower in pennsylvania. he's stolen more jobs from new jersey while he's been governor. >> governor christie has made at least four visits to pennsylvania recently in support of corbett. thousands came out last night to a tom wolf rally at temple university, including president obama. the president touted wolf's experience as a businessman, saying he will handle the economy better than corbett. >> he knows how to create jobs here in pennsylvania. he's done it. and now he's running because he believes that if you work hard in this state, if you work hard in this country, you should share in the country's success. >> now, if wolf does beat corbett tomorrow, it would be the first time a pennsylvania governor has lost re-election since 1970. meantime, the president's trip out of philadelphia hit a bit of a snag last night. there was a minor mechanical problem with "air force one," so, he and his group had to be

transferred to a backup plane. nbc 10 is your station for complete election day coverage. you can count on us for early returns, all the reaction from candidates and voters and live reports starting at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. nbc 10's keith jones will be covering the corbett campaign in pittsburgh, while lu ann cahn will be in york with the wolf campaign. we'll also have crews covering the big races in new jersey and delaware, and we'll have more on those races in new jersey and delaware coming up in about 15 minutes. you can also learn more about the candidates and the issues that will be decided on our website, nbc10.com. 4:06 now. turning now to atlantic city's casino crisis. taj mahal workers are getting set to march on city hall later this morning. they want mayor don guardian to reconsider granting concessions that the casino says are necessary to stay open. about 1,000 workers have signed a petition calling on guardian and other officials to do everything possible to keep the taj open. the casino has threatened to close in december if it doesn't get an aid package from the government.

and a new report shows atlantic county has one of the highest unemployment rates for metropolitan areas in the nation. the jobless rate in that county was nearly 11% in december, the highest rate for metro areas east of the rocky mountains. four casinos in ac have closed this year, leaving about 10,000 people out of work. well, if you take septa to work, you should have a normal commute this morning. the transit agency and the largest workers union hammered out an agreement late friday, avoiding a strike that was threatened for today. the new contract is expected to be officially ratified later this week. it includes a 5% raise for workers. happening today in philadelphia, the lawyers for the two men charged in the deadly building collapse in center city will be in court to decide if they're ready to go to trial. griffin campbell and sean benschop are charged with murder. a tentative trial date has been set for december 2015. in june 2013, the wall under demolition at 22nd and market street collapsed on to a salvation army thrift store,

killing six people, injuring many more. benschop was operating heavy machinery at the time. griffin was the demolition contractor. and this morning, this man, milton garcia, who's accused of abducting and raping a woman in rittenhouse square, is expected to be in court. garcia faces more than a dozen charges. police say surveillance video here shows garcia grabbing the woman and forcing her into her apartment as she walked home from a bar this past summer. investigators say garcia raped her and stole her phone and keys. he's scheduled to be in court today for a preliminary hearing. classes will be in session today at a montgomery county high school for the first time since school leaders confirmed that a student came down with whooping cough. this morning we've learned that student at wissahickon high school is a sophomore. school officials say other students may have been exposed. now, whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is highly contagious and causes violent coughing. this is the second case at that school since september. a win that came with two losses for the eagles yesterday. quarterback nick foles will have an mri today to find out just

how badly he broke his collar bone during yesterday's win over the texans. foals left the game at the end of the first quarter after being slammed to the ground here on his non throwing shoulder. he's expected to miss at least a month. mark sanchez took over and threw two touchdowns and two interceptions, leading the birds to victory. and the eagles suffered an even bigger loss on defense. look at this. linebacker demeco ryans is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing his achilles tendon. get this, ryans suffered the same injury four years ago on the same field when he played for the texans. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's a cold start this morning. that wind that was blowing yesterday brought in the colder air and the temperatures have really come down. we're looking at 30s for most of the area. there's less wind but still a little bit of a breeze this morning. when it's cold out, it doesn't take much wind to make it feel colder, but we are in for a warming trend, and that will start today. right now, if you're heading out

the door, allentown is 33. feels like 28 there with the breeze. 40 degrees in northeast philadelphia. that number is still falling. and atlantic city is at 36 degrees at the airport. you can see wind speeds have come way down. the flags now just blowing in a light wind atop of the aramark building in center city. 5-mile-an-hour wind at pottstown. it's at 8 miles in northeast philadelphia. a little bit stronger in the pocono mountains, but nowhere near the 30 to 45-mile-an-hour wind we saw yesterday. 40 in wilmington and northeast philadelphia. move inland, you can find bluebell, lafayette hill, willow grove all in the 30s this morning. it's 38 in collegeville. a little bit colder in eagleville. gilbertsville is down to 39 along with pottstown, so it's a cold start this morning. you'll have to layer up. but the good news is, we're in for lots of sunshine, especially to start with. you can see how nice and clear it is. there are some high clouds to the north, and some of those will be moving into the area. but we'll still see the temperatures climb nicely. high cloudiness, no sign of

14 minutes after 4:00 now. in oregon, a terminally ill woman is dead after taking a lethal medication prescribed by a doctor. a spokesperson says brittany maynard was surrounded by family and friends when she took those drugs on saturday. maynard had brain cancer and said she wanted to die on her own terms. she moved to portland from california, a state that does not have aid in dying laws. she planned to end her life on november 1st, but last week said she might delay her death, but then she went ahead with her plan on saturday. maynard was a week shy of her 30th birthday. this morning we're following new ebola concerns. medical experts are monitoring a person who recently returned from liberia and came into the country at newark liberty airport. that person showed signs of a fever yesterday and is now at duke university hospital being monitored. the patient, we're told, has no other symptoms. test results are expected today. and a new poll shows more than 7 in 10 americans support mandatory quarantines for health workers who have treated ebola

patients, even if they show no symptoms. 71% of those surveyed say the workers should be subject to a 21-day quarantine. this comes after nurse kaci hickox just won a challenge against maine's mandatory quarantine. she said her rights were being violated and a judge agreed. once again, it is election day eve, just one day until voters head to the polls in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware and all across the country, in fact. every seat in the house of u.s. representatives will be on the ballot, and 36 senate seats will as well. new jersey and delaware voters are both electing u.s. senators. in pennsylvania, no senate seats are being filled. 16 of the state's 18 members of the house of representatives are seeking re-election. among the contested seats, two races in the suburbs getting national attention, third-time republican mike fitzpatrick is facing an aggressive challenge from kevin strouse, a former army ranger and first-time candidate for office. in the 6th district, ryan

costello is against ryan t travedi. three of the delegates to the u.s. house of representatives will change hands in the midterm elections. right now, they're evenly split between democrats and republicans. and analysts predict that won't change. also in new jersey, there's the u.s. senate race between senator cory booker and republican challenger jeff bell. in delaware, democratic senator chris coons will take on republican challenger kevin wade for u.s. senate. and there is one house seat up for grabs in delaware along with some key state races, including attorney general, auditor and treasurer. now, a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows that likely voters are deadlocked over which party they would like to control congress. 46% of those surveyed want republicans to take control, and 45% say they want a democrat democratically controlled congress. republicans are more popular with likely male voters, while democrats hold a double-digit lead with women. and on election day tomorrow, you can count on nbc 10 for early returns, reaction and live reports. you can also learn more about

6:24. breaking news to pass along to you from overseas. nbc news has confirmed that three people have died in a shooting near a train station in switzerland. now, so far, there are not many details. investigators aren't telling us who the shooter is or if they have anyone in custody. witnesses are telling local media there in switzerland that they fear there could be more victims. we'll continue to monitor the feeds and wires coming out of switzerland there and bring you more information as soon as we get it. back here at home, family, friends and colleagues gathered to honor a fallen philadelphia police officer last night. chuck cassidy was remembered at a vigil on 66th and broad streets in west oak lane. now, he was murdered there seven

years ago when he walked in on a robbery at a dunkin' donuts and was shot. john lewis was sentenced to death for his murder. a sixth football player from a pennsylvania university has been arrested after police say he was involved in a beating that left a man with severe brain trauma. police say 20-year-old shelby wilkerson of harrisburg has turned himself in on saturday. he's been suspended from california university of pennsylvania. that school is about an hour south of pittsburgh. wilkerson and five others are accused of attacking a west chester man when he tried to stop an argument between his girlfriend and a player. that happened early thursday outside an off-campus restaurant. witnesses say they heard the players yelling "football strong" as they took off. this week, we're expecting to learn the cause of death for a whale that washed up on the banks of the maurice river in cumberland county. the whale was taken to a landfill in commercial township. experts believe starvation or possibly a virus could be to blame.

take a look at the teeth marks here in that surfboard. two surfers have quite a story to tell after surviving a shark attack in hawaii. mckenzie clark and brian wargo were surfing friday when a 12 to 15-foot tiger shark chomped down on mckenzie's board and bit her hand. as the shark dragged them away, brian grabbed the shark's fin and kicked until it let go. wow. mckenzie was treated for some cuts, but otherwise, she's okay. what a story. while it's supposed to be a relaxing getaway, it turned into a stressful situation for passengers aboard the bahamas celebration cruise line. they were stranded after their ship hit something in the water. passengers returned to the port of palm beach in shuttle buses yesterday. a spokesperson for the cruise line says the ship they were on hit an object shortly after leaving the dock at grand bahama island on friday. a passenger captured video of a chaotic scene. guests and staff putting on life jackets when the ship suddenly started tilting. >> suddenly, the power turned
