making our mark on the world. >> announcer: nbc breaking news. alive and out of the hospital. the woman who was abducted off a germantown street is now with her family and back in philadelphia. video here of them leaving the hospital in maryland overnight. a team of nbc reporters has been working around the clock on this story. we have learned new information about the victim's condition, the accused kidnapper and his violent past and the trail of evidence that led police to him and her. a remarkable story. but first, this morning, nbc10 "first alert" radar tracking rain for your morning commute. you can see rain there a live look showing the roadways. this is i-95. that rain will stay with us. good morning, welcome to "nbc 10

news today" on this thursday. i'm chris cato. we begin with bill henley on the "first alert" forecast. the rain is steady for a while? >> it is going to be steady but light rainfall. and not much view from center city. you see the rain drops on the camera. it is light rain for most of the area. there's a couple of spots it's coming down, there's spots where it's steadier in westchester county. most of it is a steady light rain. temperatures in the low 40s and 50s. 51 in philadelphia. 49 in trenton, 40s for pottstown and millville. sunshine is on hold for this morning and this afternoon, with steady but light rain this morning. 50 degrees at 7:00. 51 at 9:00. clouds will still be overhead. we'll see scattered showers at lunchtime, 44 degrees. the hour-by-hour future weather.

"first alert" reporter jillian mele is watching the rain come down. good morning, jillian. >> good morning, bill, the road, are wet out there you need to take your time. we're dealing with an accident on the northbound side of the new jersey turnpike, route 73, exit four. you can expect to see a slowdown. on pennsylvania, 60 miles per hour is what we're seeing on the pennsylvania turn spike. 55 on both 76 and the blue route this morning. average speeds there, if you're making up in upper handover where we're following act on blomer road. watch for restrictions. found alive. carlesha freeland gaither is back in philadelphia about being abducted by her alleged abductor in maryland. this story has developed in the overnight hours.

carlesha freeland-gaither left the hospital in columny around 1:00 this morning. this is video of the van that took her and her family to the hospital. also overnight, a nbc reporter spoke to the victim's father. we have three reporters who have worked on the overnight hours here in the story in philadelphia and in maryland. we begin with nbc10's katy zachry who have been talking to carlesha's relatives. >> reporter: that's right, no one is more overjoyed that carlesha is coming home safe than her family. we were told that when she returned to philadelphia she would be brought right here to her mother's home. we've been out here for some time, hoping to catch the joyful reunion. we've been outside of the house knowing this is a sensitive

situation because carlie has been through so much so has her family. sources tell us that carlesha has arrived home to her mother's house. there was activity around the back of the building a short time ago. people going in and out. around the front, i did talk to some family members, they came to the door and they said carlesha is not inside. i said, tell me how she is. they said, they're so happy that she's safe. she's back with her family and that they'll talk later this morning. we're trying to ascertain it ca carlesha is back in the home with her family. we're so overjoyed. as soon as she's ready to speak, we'll bring is it to you. katy zachry, "nbc10 news." >> and this has taken so many

changes. carlesha was abducted from philadelphia. and police found her and her captor 110 miles away in maryland. randy is live in jessup, maryland. police actually found both of them alive in his car, surprised them, didn't they? >> reporter: yeah, carlesha is free. law enforcement near richmond say they, too, were tracking barnes, they think he was involved in the brutal rape of a 16-year-old girl in october. police say barnes hit this girl with a shovel. stuffed her in the drunk of her car, poured bleach and gas on

the teenager. she managed to escape alive. barnes also accused in this kidnapping in philadelphia. we knocked on his family's door in southern virginia where his father issued an apology. what would you like to say to the family. >> you know, again -- [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: you're asking that they forgive your son? >> yes. >> reporter: that father also wishing a speedy recovery. i can tell you that barnes is currently in the custody of the fbi. correspond to sheriffs in virginia, it's likely he'll be extradited down there to face the attempted murder charges. there is also an case.

hard. >> reporter: police commissioner charles ramsey that includes an e-mail from a tip that got the ball rolling in the first place. live outside of northwest texas. >> and our coverage begins as we track the movement. coming up we'll look at the trail of evidence. at 4:30. more reaction of freelanded if gaither's family reaction in philadelphia. and we have new information on the shooting of a student at delaware state university. a second man has been arrested in the case. both face charges of assault, conspiracy and weapons related charges. that shooting took place monday outside a residence haul in dover. police say neither suspect

attends the university. the victim is expected to recover from his injuries. no word yet on why he was shot. happening today former baltimore ravens running back ray rice is expected to testify at his appeal hearing in new york. rice wants to be immediately reinstated in the nfl. he was suspended after the video shows him punching and the nfl said they suspend rice for two games. rice's wife is also expected to testify today. >> announcer: now your nbc10 "first alert" weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's a rainy start this morning, a steady light rain in the area will stay with us through the morning commute. even after it tapers off to showers this afternoon, the clouds will hang in there, we'll see wet weather even later today. gusty winds will clear things out and cool things down for the weekend. right now, we're looking at 48 degrees with rain falling in reading. a steady rain in philadelphia.

it is 4:14, carlesha freeland-gaither found alive. carlesha is back at home with her family after she left a hospital in maryland overnight. she's expected to talk to authorities later today. the man expected of abducting her off the street is under arrest. now the trail of evidence that led to that arrest began in north maryland monday night. a woman who noticed some broken glass and a bag of what appeared to be garbage in her driveway, she called police on tuesday after seeing the search for carlesha all over the

television. fbi agents responded to her home. they examined that bag. according to sources they found a receipt from a supermarket inside. that led authorities to an acme. that's where you see surveillance of the suspect, delvin barnes inside that store. >> i was just about to get the recycling and i saw your vans out here and i thought what's going on. >> now, here's what happened after that video surfaced, authorities say a police officer in virginia saw the surveillance video of barnes and realized that that is the suspect in one of their cases there, the case involving a violent abduction and rape of a teenager there in virginia. that officer was already tracking barnes car with gps. and that is how investigators located his vehicle in jessup, maryland, with carlesha inside. our coverage continues on nbc10. you can read more about delvin barnes, the suspect.

the time that he held his estranged wife captive in 2005 and his possible ties to a rape of a teenager in virginia. that is why he was being tracked by gps on his car. it's safe to return. that's the message that business owners in the poconos want to convey now that eric frein has been captured. prosecutors will join later this morning to promote the poconos as a go-to place for shoppers and families. and we have new information on what was found inside that abandoned airport hangar where eric frein was caught. that includes two rifles, a handgun, a solo charger and a bible. we asked if frein had any help from anyone while on the run for 48 day, but the lawyer told us he hasn't talked to his client about that aspect of the case. frein was arrested after alluding police for several weeks. he's accused of murdering a

state trooper and shooter another. he did not enter a plea at his arraignment last friday. he's being held at the pike county correctional facility. a delaware county high school coach is facing charges after he allegedly took off after a dui crash. he was arrested over the weekend. police say he was involved in a crash in prospect park and left the scene only to be taken into custody in ridley township. nbc10 interviewed gallagher for the high school blitz show. the school district told us he had taken a leave of absence. jack o'donald has been named the acting coach of the haverford high school team. a father and son are accused of a shoot-out that injured two police officers in delaware count at this time. nbc10 brought this as breaking news. investigators have arrested lamar james and his father tony and business say james actually tried to fire at them when they

tried to arrest them from a previous shooting. one was hit in the helmet. you see father and son there. his father is charged with obstruction of justice. mean minutes after 4:00. this morning former professor rafael robb has a bigger price to pay for murdering his price. yesterday, a jury decided that robb should pay $124 million to the estate of his late wife. the verdict ended a wrongful lawsuit to the family. they want the money to go to their college aged daughter. rafael robb pleaded guilty to the murder in 2006. allentown people pl said part of cost-custing to a plan stemming off its generation business, 450 jobs will be eliminated. but the company says severance package it's and existing vacancies will keep the number of layoffs actually to fewer

than 200. ppl are combining with riverstone. ppl says they expect that spinoff to close in the first half of next year. happening today -- a school literacy program in philadelphia will get support from the business community. school officials will announce long-term commitments from the burger bra and another, both are to fund a reading and writing program already in place at two schools. a spokesperson tell us it will boost the advance of childhood literacy. >> what we're trying to do is what are the training and tools to help the kindergarten students moving through grade three to find out thousand read at a method that suits them best. >> and a school that use, the literacy model will involve tablets and a software kit.

it's a rainy start this morning. this is the comcast center. and a steady light rain in philadelphia. 51 degrees. the flag barely moving at the nbc10 studios. clouds overhead, steady light rain for just about everyone. the temperatures, they're pretty steady right now. 50s for the i-95 corridor. and 40s for trenton, and some 40s in lower bucks county. 46 degrees in doylestown. and the temperatures right in the middle, 40s for quakertown. and temperatures are not going to move much start this morning, thanks to this. rain steadily streaming into the area. that's light rainfall that will continue through the morning through most of the morning. you see the back edge, that's going to be arriving later this morning. you'll see it taper off. your hour-by-hour, future

weather features by 10:00, you'll see brief precipitation in chester county. and rainfall in new jersey and areas north and west by noon time. we'll still be looking at scattered showers. and then late this afternoon, another round of showers coming through and that round could bring some heavy downpours. but until then, an umbrella will do the job today. temperatures climbing into the upper 50s and low 60s. another look at the radar when i calm back in less than ten minutes. 4:21 right now and the new jersey turnpike is the problem not. jillian mele will bring us up to speed with what's happening. >> that's right, chris, we have an overturned tractor trailer, northbound side of the new jersey turnpike, near exit 73 and exit 4. we also have two other accidents in new jersey right now, to willingboro. there's an accident in plains borough, we also have two lanes

princeton university is taking new steps to prevent sexual harassment on campus. the changes come after that school is found to be in violation of title 9. that's the federal regulation that protects students from discrimination based on gender. in response, printston has hired a coordinator and has new policies for investigating sexual assault for harassment complaints. students and parents at a philadelphia elementary charter school will have to wait until december to hear about the school's future. after a hearing yesterday, they will await the decision on whether to evoke that school's charter in the next 60 days.

walter palmer high school abruptly closed sends more than 300 students looking for a new place to learn. then the school had a lottery. more than 200 elementary kids had to find new schools to go to. nbc10 spoke to one parent at yesterday's hearing saying she is preemptively pulling her daughter out of first grade because she cannot deal with a closure. >> i don't want the stress no more. it's stressful. >> reporter: with what high school students have to deal with, are you worried about the same thing happening to the elementary school. >> now the ceo told us if the charter license is revoked, the school will repeal the decision. we have a new winner in the high school blitz game of the week. they voted on it all week long. len nappy rancocas valley got 54% of the vote making that winner of the matchup. rancocas valley will get to show off their shiny new stadium in
