first the release of two americans who have been held captive in north korea. kenneth bae and matthew miller returning overnight arriving at a military base in washington state to their family. >> the two men were accompanied by james clapper, the director of national intelligence. senior white house correspondent has the late breaking details on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning lester. president obama approved the mission last week. members of congress were given the heads up. hard to overstate the intricacies or surprising details of the plan. the highest ranking u.s. official in more than a decade visiting one of the most secretive places on earth. at the end of it all was a reunion. for kenneth bae, this was the embrace he waited two long years to feel. he was reunited with his family. >> i want to say thank you all for supporting me and lifting me up, not forgetting me. >> bae touched down at a

military base outside of seattle. with himing matthew todd miller who arrived in the weight arms of his parents after 12 months. it was a dramatic and emotional ending after the spy story. the secret mission was headed by america's top spy james clapper after a series of back channel negotiations that included china. >> there are ways in which they can communicate with us largely through the mission with u.n. and new york. this was the final step in a well choreographed ballet. >> he carried a message from president obama. north korea wasn't offered anything in return. >> i think it's a wonderful day for the men, their families. obviously we're grateful for their safe return. >> miller allegedly ripped up his visa. bae had been hospitalized after

working in a labor camp. >> it's been amazing two years. i learn a lot, grew a lot. lost a lot of weight. i'm standing strong because of you. >> standing by his side, his sister who had worked tirelessly to see this day. >> we're finally here. my brother is home. all of our hopes and prayer for this moment have finally come true. >> reporter: that joyous reunion notwithstanding. the u.s. officials say release does not concern north korea's nuclear program. while there, clapper did not meet with the unpredictable leader kim jong-un . >> thanks. jeffrey fowl was released last month after being held six months. good to have you with us. thanks for being here. >> thank you. good to be with you. >> when you were released, at the time you expressed mixed

emotions that kenneth bae and matthew miller were staying behind. when you heard the news of their release, how did you feel? >> i was elated. very happy they're coming home. >> that news of the release came quickly. i understand when you were told you were being released, that came quickly. you were a waiting trial at the time. when did you believe it was real that you were going on? >> like i said, in previous interviews, it took me by surprise. i thought i was going to indictment or arraignment or maybe a trial itself. it wasn't until i was at the conference table a north korean official told me i was being released. then two americans came up and said you're d.o.d. you're coming home. half hour later, i was air born and coming home. >> it's just incredible to think

about. you were kept separate from kenneth bae and matthew miller. i understand you're realizing you may have been in close proximity to one another not that long ago. can you tell us about that? >> right. i had no contact with them at all there. information in general was hard to come by like an information vacuum for the most part. just yesterday i realized that during interviews on september 1st i think it was that three of us may have been in the same building together. i had no indication at the time. >> were they ever mentioned to you? i'm sorry -- >> go ahead. >> were they ever mentioned to you by any of north koreans or did you ask about them? >> i did. i had known of kenneth's story before i came there. he had been sentenced a 15 years before i left.

while i was on a trip, the tour portion of my trip, i heard them talking about another gentleman being detained. they didn't know his name. they knew he lifted his visa. i didn't realize he had been sent to prison so quickly. he was already in prison while i was there. >> i'm sure the three of you at some point will speak and have interesting insight into time you intent there. appreciate you joining us. thank you. >> i'm available. thank you. let's turn to the big blast of cold weather headed our way. it's not winter yet. it's going to feel like it across most of the country. >> dylan is on top of it packing her warm weather gear to held off. >> yes, i'm packed.

it's going to be cold and sfr h stretch across most states. 30 plus states will see this. the polar vortex is always in the north pole. every once in a while a piece cuts off from the low and digs down into the united states. that's responsible for this cold air. coldest so far this season easily. look at some of our temperatures by 7:00 a.m. wednesday morning. temperature of 10 degrees. 1 degrees in billings, chicago 25. it comes with a little snow. not a lot going on now. over the course of 48 hours we're going to see snow take hold south of far go including minneapolis and wisconsin before it changes to a wintery mix. we could see a foot of snow in minneapolis and more than a foot if you head further north. not only dealing with cold but snow. winter sure feels like it's here lester. >> thanks very much. president obama certainly

felt a big chill in the past week with republicans making big election gains and said to control both houses of congress. chuck todd is moderator of "meet the press." good to see you. >> good morning lester. >> the republican leadership has done a good job of articulating what their vision is going forward was they take the party. are they united? >> we'll find out on the issue of health care lester. i think the leadership doesn't want to lead with sort of antagonizing the president on health care. they don't want endless votes on repeal that get vetoed. will pit be enough for that conservative base that feel they're there not to work with the president but stop him on all sorts of things? i think health care, how they go about trying to aft ing ting toe

on it without poisoning the well with the president, that's their case with the leadership. the last thing they want to talk about is health care. they're going to have to to appease the base. >> this term poisoning the well is on both sides. the president is concerned republicans will poisen the well by making executive changes on immigration policy is. how much of an appetite does the white house have to go forward on its own? >> this is another thing. he's in the same position as republican leadership on health care, on immigration. he made a promise to base, latinos, important part of the democratic coalition. lester, you can make a strong argument the president's decision to delay action on immigration, demoralize latino turnout in two states that mattered to democrats, florida and colorado. the idea of delaying was supposed to help red state

of communist rule crumble before our eyes. >> for 30 years now, these people have been living in a prison like state. they have effectively taken down the wall. >> until that morning, the east german government had been trying to suppress the growing protest movement. >> when people went on the streets there was an atmosphere of fear. it was a little like north korea today. they wanted to turn back the clock. >> it seeped they might succeed until a late afternoon press conference by the spokesman where he suddenly announced east german citizens would be free to travel right away. it was a mistake, but it was too late. east germans by the hundreds headed here to the bridge check point. >> translator: it was the best day of my life. >> this film maker tells me that as it was for so many. this man remembers a young

couple he met that night. >> they came to me. i said i'll show you around west berlin. they said no, we can't. we've got to go home. they said we couldn't find a baby sitter. >> in berlin today, it's difficult to see traces of what was a very frightening place, difficult but not impossible. were you surprised once the wall came down by how seamless and peaceful the city became? >> this resolution was the best political event germany has ever produced. >> i always thought 1968 would be the most memorable journalist year of my career? death of martin luther king, democratic national convention in chicago. 1989, think about what we have witnessed this year, the wall effectively has come down. i mean physically as well.

that's a chunk of the berlin wall. men and women a top the wall tonight hammer and chisel taking it down. >> you can almost as you watch the video, almost imagine the energy, the electricity in the air at that a moment. was it palpable? >> it was absolutely palpable. the thing about dividing california in half for 45 years where the northern half lived behind a wall and southern half went about being southern california. that's what they were. when they came to the wall, they were in acid wash jeans, cheap cars pushing friends. they suddenly went from moon to earth. they couldn't believe what they were seeing yards from where they had been living. now what's happened is that since it's been unified, those parents that come across have children under 25. they're going to all these memorials saying you lived like that?

police have not made any arrests in this case. happening today, just two days away from veterans day. a parade and monument dedication are set for bucks county. the parade begins today at 1:00 along edgewood road. it will wind up at veterans square park. that's followed by the dedication of a memorial monument to 500 local veterans. one of those vets is victor saracini. he was the pilot of one of the hijacked airplanes that flew into the world trade center on 9/11. i'll see you at 9:00.

we begin this half hour with high drama in phoenix. there's a big nascar race there. the stakes on the track are so high, some of the sport's most famous drivers have been trading blow office the track. kristen is here with more. this is getting heated and physical. >> good morning. looks more like nhl than nascar. we're talking about bench clearing brawls, pit crew and all. many involve brad keselowski who races today leaving many to wonder if the hits will keep on coming. >> nascar fans are used to seeing drivers make contact but nothing quite like this. over the past few weeks, much of the drama has been off the track. that's kevin harvick pushing brad keselowski into jeff gordon last weekend. it quickly escalates. keselowski, gordon and crews ended up in an all-out brawl.

it's not the first fight for keselowski. a few weeks ago he was chase add down by matt kensic after a he said keselowski intentionally ran into him. >> he's got an attitude he's unconcerned with their feelings. >> there is a lot on the line. drivers all trying for four spots in the finals this weekend. later today, they race many phoenix where gordon says keselowski better watch out. >> if i'm in a situation i feel like i can make a bold move i think is going to help me win the race and he stands in the way, i'm going to do the same thing he did to me last week. >> gordon claims keselowski gave him a flat tire during this race. others say he's been reckless. >> i feel good about the actions

>> you remember this. >> i do. the guitar player called out sick one night. joe was a last minute replacement. >> did you know the songs? >> i did. i knew them all. >> the first song was the cumberland road. >> we the chorus and everything went in slow motion. i'll never forget that first time hearing us together. it's like we've been doing this for years. there's nothing to this. >> and so rascal flatts was formed. now, 15 years later, the trio was back on stage where it started. ♪ ♪ >> for one last bittersweet encore before the fiddle and steel meets the wrecking ball. >> you call yourself home of rascal flatts? >> right.
