"today's" dylan dreyer is in forest lake minnesota. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the snow has started here in forest lake about a half hour north of minneapolis. and you can see the roads are already snow covered. winter storm warnings are in effect from the northern rockies where the heavy snow started yesterday, extending all the way into the western great lakes. this is going to be the first major snowstorm of the season for this area. and winter is still several weeks away. i just want to put this into perspective for you for this region we normally pick up about nine inches of snow on average for the entire month of november. with this snowstorm, we should easily pick up more than a foot

of snow making this the first double-digit snowstorm this area has seen in two years. now, we are still surprisingly seeing minneapolis school districts open today, although some of the smaller school districts are closed. but people are still taking this seriously. they have been out putting on their snow tires a little earlier than usual. they've also been reinforcing their supplies for the snow and we're hoping to see some more plows out later today. again, because these roads are already snow covered. now, keep in mind this is just the leading edge of this arctic air that is pouring into the united states which will ultimately affect 42 states. oklahoma city for example, will top out in the mid-70s today and will plummet by 40 degrees by the time we get into the middle of the week. and here in the upper midwest, today is just the start of what could be a two-week stretch of subfreezing temperatures, meaning once the snow piles up today, it is going to stick around for a long time. matt? >> dylan, thank you very much. trying to imagine that phone call over the weekend when they

say al you want to go to minnesota? you said send dylan. >> that's why i have my call to dylan. unfortunately, dylan is going to be there for a while because at least 6% of flights have been canceled already in minneapolis, and more on the way. low pressure look at the cold air. this is the leading edge of that cold air by the afternoon, the heaviest snow going on in minneapolis on into marquette, michigan. this snowfall is going to really come down hard and fast. we're talking in the next 48 hours upwards of a foot and a half of snow from minneapolis into marquette. the more north you go the worse it gets. one to two inches per hour. this is the leading edge. so ahead of it we've got warmth and moisture. behind it this unseasonably cold air. so temperatures today, you've got anywhere from 20 to 30 degrees below average. but look ahead of the front. dallas 79. little rock 10. tonight, the lows drop down to single digits in bismarck kansas city upper 20s. then wednesday that cold air

starts to make its way into lexington. chicago, 28. alexandria 46. thursday's lows lexington will be 29. chicago, 25 for a low. atlanta, 43. and on friday tallahassee, at 33. buffalo, 29. kansas city 19. and guys this cold cold air does not go anywhere any time soon. it will be sticking around for at least the weekend and beyond. >> all right. al thank you so much. meantime politics now, president obama arrived in china overnight, kicking off a three-nation tour. the trip coming at a difficult time in his presidency as far as politics is concerned. but some good news overseas that's two american hostages detained in north korea have been returned home. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker is traveling with the president. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah this is the second time that president obama has visited asia this year. one of his key foreign policy goals has been strengthening ties with the region but that has been complicated by crises abroad and now a bruising political defeat at home.

china rolled out a high-tech red carpet as leaders from around the world gathered for the apec economic summit. president obama starting a diplomatic trip that will focus on the economy, trade and restarting his so-called pivot to asia. the president's day dominated by high-level talks including his first meeting with president xi jinping on chinese soil. key to this trip reassuring critics who say other crises like isis and ebola have made asia an afterthought. today mr. obama came bearing gifts, announcing a new visa agreement with china. >> under the current arrangement, visas between our two countries last for only one year. under the new arrangement, student exchange visas will be extending to five years. business and tourist visas will be ex-tended to ten years. >> reporter: and he is trying to rehabilitate his diminished status on the world stage after last week's election day defeat by republicans. on sunday mr. obama, for the first time, took responsibility.

>> the buck stops with me. the buck stops right here. at my desk. and so whenever as the head of the party, it doesn't do well i've got to take responsibility for it. >> reporter: but some good news to start his trip. north korea unexpectedly released the final two american detainees, matthew miller and kenneth bae. >> i'm standing strong because of you. and thank you for. >> reporter: now, earlier today, president obama praised the release and said it will take more than that to ease tensions with north korea. that will be a big topic of conversation here over the next two days. as with china's full record on human rights from here president obama heads to myanmar and then rounds out his trip at the g-20 economic summit in

australia. savannah? matt? >> kristen welker traveling with the president, thank you. let us turn to natalie now. a developing story in the fight against isis. >> good morning, everyone. in the fate of a key isis leader is unclear this morning after u.s. airstrikes in iraq. richard engel is in erbil, iraq. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. some iraqi officials and media here in iraq citing unnamed sources, allegedly close to isis claim that the group's leader al baghdadi was injured by an american airstrike in iraq over the weekend. however, iraqi officials we've spoken to say they're aware of those reports but cannot confirm them. if it were true that baghdadi were injured or even killed by an airstrike, it would be an enormous blow to the group. baghdadi is the man who took al qaeda in iraq an insurgent group, and turned it into isis today. the militant organization that controls large parts of iraq and syria. but at this stage, natalie, we

cannot verify these reports and are treating them with a degree of skepticism. natalie? >> richard engel in erbil, iraq thank you. a suicide bomber killed at least 48 people this morning and wounded about 80 others at a school assembly in northeastern nigeria. a teacher said the bomber was dressed as a student and that most of the victims were young people. the school is in an area often targeted by boko haram rebels who are notorious for their kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls in nigeria. a prominent minister and his wife were among the nine people killed when their plane went down on an approach to grand bahama island. it took off from nassau and tried to land in freeport. it collided with a construction crane at a shipyard. pastor miles monroe and his wife ruth were killed in the crash. monroe was a well-known author and leadership consultant in the bahamas. and new information this morning on that massive recall of general motors ignition switches "the wall street journal's" reporting that gm ordered a half million replacement ignition switches to

fix chevrolet cobalts and other small cars. almost two months before it alerted federal safety regularities to the problem. the part's order now puts into question the timetable that gm game for its recall of 2.5 million vehicles. the ignition switch issue now is linked to 30 deaths. hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of germany's capital city on sunday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the collapse of the berlin wall. german chancellor angela merkel attended a huge event at brandenburg gate once part of the barrier that divided east and west berlin. and sunday night's events included music, fireworks and the release of 8,000 balloons that traced the root of the berlin wall. a spectacular sight there. speaking of incredible sights take a look at this one in texas this weekend when a dashcam captured a fireball streaking across the sky over san antonio. people all over the state reported seeing what appeared to be a meteor shower but the national weather service says there were no reports of a

meteor landing somewhere nearby. hmm. ♪ i don't know. >> is that it? >> we'll have to wait and see. everybody is talking green bay packers' quarterback aaron rodgers lit up the sky in a different way sunday night. he threw six touchdown passes in the first half against the chicago bears in a game that was seen right here on nbc. that ties an nfl record. the packers led 42-0 at the half. they went on to win it 55-14. incredible game for aaron rodgers. meanwhile, what happened in seattle, a fan's head turning into an unlikely perch for the seahawks' live mascot. >> oh dear. >> yikes! >> tama apparently flies out of the tunnel before seattle's home games. this time you see it decided to make friends with that guy. and it took a little detour into the stands. after a few minutes there of freedom. that had to hurt right? the hawk was then reunited with its handler.

>> reporter: are you actively persuading him to run? >> well in the sense that i'm about to say something on your tv show here that says i hope he runs. he'll make up his own mind. i think he knows he can do the job. >> thank you all. thank you very much. >> no matter who says he should run, he knows he's going to make up his mind based upon what he thinks is right for his family. and i have no idea. i really don't. >> reporter: you know politics. >> yes, i do. >> reporter: do you think he can get through the republican primary? >> absolutely. i think if he runs people will say, well this guy could be a great president. >> reporter: some people would say is he conservative enough to get through today's republican party? >> yeah i understand. it becomes sheer speculation until he says i'm in. if he chooses to run, it would be a formidable force. and it would be a lot of too many bushes. he understands that. i understand that, too. because they said that about me. >> reporter: well there was a time when it might have been a nonstarter to have a bush on the ticket. >> i don't think it has anything to do with me. i think it really has to do about him. this man has got a vision and

can articulate it. he's good. really good. and he also can give a speech complete speech, in spanish. you know my vocabulary is about 50 words. and he's not afraid of the competition. should he decide to run. >> reporter: can you imagine a general election between a bush and a clinton? >> yeah. bill clinton and i do events together. someone said what about another bush/clinton race? my quote was, the first one didn't turn out too well. yeah that would be interesting. >> reporter: do you think it would affect the friendship? >> no. >> reporter: you have a genuine friendship now. >> no it wouldn't. we're too professional for that in a sense. i mean not at all. >> reporter: though out of politics now, president bush still watches world events closely, especially the rise of another vicious terror group in iraq. when you look at isis and the threat now, do you think that it's as dangerous, as potent as pre-9/11 al qaeda? or is it more so?

>> i think it's somewhat -- they're different -- they're not in different in the sense they're willing to murder innocents and ideology. now we've got beheadings by these thugs over there. and i'm confident they love to inflict great damage on the country. >> reporter: well organized and well funded. >> al qaeda was pretty well funded for a while, but they got crushed. and isis is you know isis needs to be defeated. i applaud the president to degrade and defeat. hopefully the strategy will work. >> reporter: the midterm just happened. you remember the 2006 midterm. >> it was a thumping. >> reporter: you probably have an insight into how president obama might feel. >> well i'm sure he's disappointed. it will be interesting to see whether or not he reaches out to john boehner and mitch. both of them i've talked to. both of them do want to work with the president to get things done. >> reporter: what do you think the republicans should do with this newfound power? >> i think they ought to impose reasonable agenda items on a variety of fronts that the

he was president. i was miserable at times when they would criticize my dad. >> reporter: was any part of writing this for him because you want to make sure that his presidency gets the respect it deserves? >> sure, absolutely. he was overshadowed by a very transformative president, ronald reagan. but eventually historians would realize he was a great one-term president. >> reporter: for the first time the book "41" reveals the extent to which george bush grieved the second term he never got and contains the revelation that he considered not running for re-election at all. >> it was a shocking conversation. he and i were fishing out there. and he said i'm thinking about not running again. i said wow. why? rsh bush said his father was deeply disturbed his son, neil had been swept into the savings & loan scandal of the '80s. >> i think i said dad, you've got a lot left to do. >> reporter: he lovingly traces his father's footsteps, the navy, the texas oil fields and

launching a political career that took him to congress the u.n. the cia and ultimately the white house. >> i, george herbert walker bush. >> reporter: but for the fact he wasn't re-elected you and your brother may not have run for governor yourselves. >> it would have been difficult to spend most of my time answering questions. >> reporter: you never really asked your father whether you should run for president. >> right. i didn't. >> reporter: why didn't you? >> because his answer would have been you know if you run, i'm for you. >> reporter: do you think you sought his approval through your life? >> probably. yeah, i think we all do as children. if you admire somebody, you do in a way. >> reporter: though he jumped out of a helicopter five months ago to mark his 90th birthday the family came close to losing george bush in 2012 after a bout with pneumonia. he came very close to death. >> he did, yeah. >> reporter: do you think your dad is at peace? >> i do think he's at peace. you know i'll probably be in the corner drooling and there

he is, sweet-natured to everybody. >> reporter: so this is where the magic happens? president bush 43 seems equally at peace, relishing his new title, grandfather and artist. >> you know i really don't miss power and fame. >> reporter: you talked about in the book the letdown that any president feels. >> yeah yeah. >> reporter: having left office. >> that's right. >> reporter: did you experience that? >> sure. oh, yeah. >> reporter: what was that like? >> the first shocking experience was that i didn't have any responsibilities. but, you know, then you kind of get the sense of kind of longing to make sure that you know you remain stimulated. and paintings help fill that void. >> reporter: one of his most cherished pieces is this never-before-seen portrait of father and son. what was, in your mind and in your heart as you painted it? >> well i was very proud to be standing next to a man i admire greatly. the first thing i wanted to make sure was i got the noses right.

but, you know, i tried to paint a gentle soul and i did. as for me i kind of bumbled through it. >> reporter: you and your father have charted a very similar course. was there ever a time when you feel like you were actively rebelling? >> love kind of binds you. there's no need to rebel if you feel love. but, you know, i am different than he is. when i moved to midland, i was single and drinking pretty hard. >> reporter: did he ever pull you aside and say, get it together? >> no, but there was a moment when i got into harvard business school. he said one thing, and that was it. he said "you ought to think about it. it will open up new horizons." and it was very sage advice. and i went. and you know what? it opened up new horizons. >> reporter: father knows best. >> father knows best, yeah. >> inside that painting studio you see one thing, he is driven about painting and quite prolific. a lot of paintings there.

did i say that right? >> it's an actograph. >> why do people wear this? >> this is good for measuring patterns of sleep over time. so if your sleep cycle it off, it will show up. >> it's a motion detector. so what about the nights i lie in bed, i'm wide awake but motionless? that's going to think i'm sleeping isn't it? >> you have to be really a guru in meditation or something because you always have some movement if you're awake. >> doctor let's talk about this. 46% of people not surprisingly said they don't get enough sleep. the reasons, though are varied. what impact does not getting enough sleep have on our lives? physically and emotionally? >> it can cause a number of diseases dementia depression diabetes heart disease. we all have our sleepless nights from time to time but over a long period of time we can have illness as well. >> so once we tracked my sleeping habits with this does it tell me how to "a," get to bed easier or stay aleap easier? >> it doesn't really tell you how to do that but you actually

do a pretty good job. you have regular sleep times. the one thing you do do like many people you sleep in when you don't have to get up early. >> right. but i also wake up in the middle of the night. that's something that men of my age have happen a lot. al mentioned that. so the trick for me is what do i do to get back to sleep once i've gotten up in the middle of the night? >> well if you can't fall back asleep within 30 minutes, it's time to shift gears. and i joke that it makes us sharpen our math skills. if we fall asleep right at this moment we calculate it will be 3 hours and 37 minutes. instead what we need to do is get out of bed, keep our lights dim, do some reading. if you have a problem that's bothering you, write it down. put it in a drawer and close it. deal with it in the morning time. >> people tend to have set sleeping patterns. you just talked about that. is it possible to reset your sleep clock? >> oh sure. but it takes time. you know it's jet lag. we're all familiar with that. the weekend thing we call social jet lag. so many people stay up two hours later on the weekend. but guess what happens sunday night? you can't get to sleep. >> right, exactly. you can have this back. i never want to see that again.

prostate cancer. it is the most common form of cancer among men in america and the second deadliest. one in seven men will be diagnosed with it. and nearly 30,000 will die from it this year alone. dr. mehmet oz is host of "the dr. oz show" and the new own show, "surgeon oz." good to see you. surgeon oz, dr. oz, good to see you. we talk about prostate cancer somethinging didded in older men. i think the average age of diagnosis, 66? >> it is. remember that 90% of men, if they live to age 90 will have prostate cancer. the question is not whether prostate cancer is a problem. of course it is. but will it kill you? probably not. the vast majority of people die with it. the big question is what should you do to identify which ones are dangerous? >> basically, a lot of people get diagnosed with this and then they look at their doctor and say i didn't feel any symptoms. is that normally the case? >> that's the norm. it does not usually give you symptoms. put the papers down for one second. i want you to do something you may not have done before. touch the prostate. >> this is a human prostate. >> this is the bladder.

at the bottom of the bladder, right there, you hold it like that in your fingers. that is the prostate right there. see that little round thing? >> right. is this a normal prostate or an enlarged prostate? >> that's a normal prostate. this my friend is an enlarged prostate. you see how big that is? >> right. >> feel how smooth that is in there. >> right. >> and then feel this and describe that to everybody. >> that's got little nodules. >> exactly. >> on it. >> prostate cancer. the nodules that doctors feel for when they do a rectal exam are what you just felt right there. that little nodule is what we look for. the key question is should you get a rectal exam? should you get a blood test to check your psa, one of the tests we use to identify it. >> let's start with the blood test. you just mentioned it's a psa. most men over a certain age get that. if the results of that come back in the okay range, do you need to go on and get this other test? >> you don't need to do anything else if the psa tests are low. generally speaking we don't use the psa test correctly. that's why there's a debate. most people think it tells you if i have cancer. it doesn't, really. it tells if you have

inflammation or irritation of the prostate. some groups say don't bother getting the test anymore. i say get the test but don't rush off to get a buyiopsy or end up getting treated when you shouldn't. >> let's talk about the rectal exam which al and i did on the air last year. under what circumstances do you say a guy should definitely go get that test? >> it's free. it really isn't that invasive as you experienced personally. i think every other year men over 50 ought to get a rectal exam. if you have a family history, all these things get pushed earlier for both the psa and rectal exam. remember family history is not just someone who has prostate cancer but under 60 or 65. >> let's go back to something you hinted about a second ago. just because you have an enlarged prostate does not mean you have prostate cancer. as a matter of fact most men, their prostate will enlarge over time. >> if you last night had to get up and urinate, you probably have a hypertrophiyy yhypertrophy

prostate. >> lifestyle changes? >> this is hugely important. the same lifestyle changes that work for the heart work for the prostate. they really are connected. can you literally reverse prostate cancer. not just prevent it but reverse it. what are the keys? lycopene-rich foods such as tomatoes work edamame. much better than saturated fats. this is my big secret nuts. because nuts have selenium and invite men e and these foods seem to be able to help the body deal with prostate cancer. >> we have this information on our website, but at what age should guys start going to get that blood taste? >> i believe age 50. use it as a baseline study. please this is important, most of the time it's elevated from inflammation or from an infection. get the infection treated before you let them put a needle in your prostate. we are taking out too many prostates we may have been able to avoid with lifestyle and with the appropriate treatment of infection. nice beard, by the way. >> thank you.

up about it in her new book "second memoir called "watch me." of course we've been doing that for many years. good morning. good to see you. >> good morning. good to see you. >> we know you've had an interesting life when you have not one but two memoirs. you had your early years in the first memoir. and this is your life in hollywood. it sounds like a lot of fun. >> it was a lot of fun. i'll admit it. >> you talk a lot about actually your relationships. was there anything that was hard to kind of delve into and relive? >> well actually the nature of writing a book is that the hard things are trying to find the proper adjectives for something rather than retelling a story that might have been difficult or painful at the time. i found that the writing process actually superseded you know the facts of life. >> jack nicholson, of course was your paramour for, i think, 15 17 years. >> 17 years. >> you really are very open in the book about that relationship.

and he was kind of a bad boy in hollywood. >> well, that's not big news. >> i know but there you were right next to him. how did you handle that and what was the process of writing about it like? >> well i sort of handled it on a day-to-day basis. and sometimes i didn't handle it so well at the time. writing about it actually was quite cathartic. and i showed him the book before it went to publication. so i got his stamp of approval. not that i needed it but it was nice to have. >> you write that looking back on it now, you think there were moments where -- i don't know if denial is the word you'd use, but there were times where you felt like -- >> denial is not a -- >> where maybe you should have known what he was up to. >> i knew what he was up to but, you know the thing about being with somebody who's that much in the public eye and who is that charming and is that charismatic is that you kind of

have to go along with the program. it's not like you're going to break all those habits immediately. >> this book is dishy. it's interesting. it describes a hollywood that seems very exciting. you have a lot of tales to tell. one of them though was disturbing. you tell a story about ryan o'neal who you briefly dated. and you tell about a night where he was, according to you, physically violent with you. >> well it's my feeling that any man who lifts a hand against a woman deserves to be outed. so i'll sort of leave it at that. >> he had no comment, of course. but you left the relationship right after that you said. >> yes. >> yeah. you also talk about roman polanski who is a good friend. talk about being in a strange place at a strange time. you happened to be at his house that day when the young woman who he was later charged with statutory rape for was actually right there. of course you didn't see anything but you realized later what had happened? >> well actually, it was at jack's house.

it wasn't at roman's house. but yes, you know so far as i'm concerned, whatever happened is his business. and i wasn't there for any untoward behavior. i can say that with some happiness. >> did you enjoy writing the book and reliving this stuff? >> yes, i did. it was, as i say, it was a cathartic process. it's good to relive certain things because you get a perspective. i had a good time because i was also here working on "smash" at the time. you know three days intensive work on "smash," and then the rest of the time i gave over to writing the book. it was a good discipline. >> there's a reason the book is called "watch me." i really like it. can you tell people why you gave it that title? >> well it was, first of all, actually my book agent gave me the title. i'm very grateful to him, bill

taking a look at the headlines. some new information on the massive recall of general motors ignition switches. "the wall street journal" is reporting that gm ordered a half million replacement ignition switches to fix some of its cars. almost two months before it then alerted federal safety regulators to the problem. the parts order now puts into question the timetable that gm gave for its recall of 2.5 million vehicles. the ignition switch issue is now linked to 30 deaths. a new warning today over laundry detergent pods. poison hotlines have received more than 17,000 calls in just the last two years about children biting into the shiny packets or getting the detergent in their eyes. 700 were hospitalized, and one died. the concentrated detergent can cause burns, coma and seizures. retailers and restaurants are rolling out the freebies for veterans day. vets can get a free haircut tomorrow at great clips.
