>> reporter: matt, good morning. take a look, just up there on the 69th floor, that is where that high rise window washers were suspended more more than an hour-and-a-half as onlookers gathered here on the ground. folks watched on tv and online. everyone holding their breath. dangling, and trapped from the tallest building in the western hemisphere, two window washers stranded after a cable snapped on the way from one world trade center leaving them stopped and scared in an almost vertical position. the men were seen just hours before in pictures posted on social media. more than 100 new york city firefighters rushed to the scene. the department tweeting this photo from pence, and up-close look at the terrifying view. from a top floor, rescue workers lowered additional safety harnesss and a two-way radio to

spending almost ten years for a crime he always said he didn't commit. we have a look at how he has begun now to rebuild his life. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt, ryan ferguson not for nearly a decade to prove his innocence, now, one year since his conviction in missouri was overturned, he has moved to florida and has been determined to make the most of every day. it's hard to know exactly where to begin when you have a lot to do. it's even harder when you are making up for lost team. ryan ferguson is making up for ten years. >> does a day go by that you don't think about it? >> it really hurts to think about that. you try to avoid it. but it's impossible. i missed out on all my 20s and there's just no getting away from that. >> reporter: ryan was arrested. locked up at 19, accused of committing a halloween night murder after a friend said he had dream-like memories they

committed together. >> i've got to go to prison for the rest of my life. i have to tell what that man did. >> that friend and another eyewitness admitted to lying on the stand. >> i don't want to die knowing i did the wrong thing. >> last november, a state appeals court overturned ryan's conviction, stated the verdict was not worthy of confidence and after nearly ten years behind bars allowed him to be released. when you were in prison, did you think you would ever come back to this? >> it was a concern. i had dreamt of coming to florida while i was in brison just to be with friend and family and this beautiful environment and there was a really scary possibility that might never happen. >> reporter: he came out having to learn things we take for granted, like texting, instagram even facebook. >> i never used an ipod let alone an iphone.

>> when did you go on facebook for the first time? >> dpefl not the first night. >> reporter: he has been chris crassing the country for an awareness. >> i have a dream to show i am not an anomaly. this happens all the time. >> reporter: he's also taken up the cause of helping kids whose parents have been incarcerated go to college. something he missed out on when he was arrested his freshman year. >> these kids, i feel the connection with, is that we choose to be defined instead by what we choose to do with our life, not what has happened to us. >> reporter: for the most part, he is able to stay positive and upbeat. but sometimes just to think about the fact that he lost ten years of his freedom, it's hard. >> i thought when i got out, i'd be really happy. i got my freedom back. but it's two different worlds, prison and now here. i found a lot of struggles. >> reporter: two things that

help cope, working out. he was featured in men's health magazine and has a new book, stronger, faster, smarter, being released from january. he says it's a blueprint that encourages all of to us keep pushing. >> keep pushing is a metaphor for life. it's usable in the gym. it's usable in our education. everything. so keep pushing. >> reporter: just last month, ryan turned 30. celebrating his first birthday on the outside since he was 19. finally surrounded by the people he loves, ryan can't wait for the future. >> did you make a wish? >> i have my wish. you know, family, friends and freedom. so the three fs. >> ryan ferguson's attorney has filed a $100 million civil rights lawsuit in this case. it's worth noting the innocence project says roughly 30% of exonerated people like ryan

night. >> this show is spectacular. just for people who aren't familiar with "love letters." it is very much about love letters, two people wrote the first letter when they were 7-years-old. >> something leak that. what's interesting, in spite of the title "love letters," it's not goy and sentimental. it's very tough sometimes and very funny and there are only one or two actual love letters in the play. the rest of it is these two people trying to find each other. they're out of sync all the time. >> what was it like to try and come up with the rhythm with alan? i mean, obviously, he's a great actor. you are a great actress. does it come naturally or did you have to work at it? >> well, i was reading these letters, as an actor, you are deprived of all of your familiar territory. you can't look the other actor in the eye. you have your stationary for the entire play. so you are more focused on that and finding the specifics of the

letters. >> the difficulty, i agree, with candy, the difficult is relating to the other person without looking at them, which is something odd for an actor, because we get a lot out of the other person's face. >> let's talk about broadway. every time an actor/actress comes in here, they have been on broadway, they say it's different from any other acting experience. is that true? do you feel that way? >> well, he's a broadway vet. i -- >> you were on broadway in 2012, weren't you? >> yeah, that's almost the only other time. what i find so strike about broadway is everyone that does it does it for the love of the work. because you can't really make a living doing it. and people who are there are there because they want to be. so there is a real seriousness of purpose and focus and the performance, everyone does their best. well, in our case, it's only two of us. >> most of us do our best. >> yeah. >> you were there in 2005 last

time, with glen ross. when you are on broadway, i understand the schedule is, it takes everything. >> you know what's interesting about it. you think the show is only two hours a night. so they have it easy. from the minute you wake up, you are thinking, did i get enough sleep for tonight? is my voice in shape? am i getting sick? when do i eat? you know, i don't eat right before the show. then your friends come, you have to go out and eat spaghetti afterwards. >> you can't wind down. you both have something in common, in your careers have created iconic characters for television, murphy brown and hawkeye pierce, are characters like this something you look at always as a gift? >> oh, i do. i loved playing murphy. she was a fantastic character and just always fun to play for ten years. >> do you always look for the next one? do you always think, can i get a character --

twice as many motor vehicle crashes. >> i would wake up at 3:00 in the morning, within 20 second i could be driving a 72,000 pound fire truck down the road. i feed to have my faculties about me. >> reporter: there are health issues, hypertension, heart disease, mood and memory problems. for the firefighters in the study there was an increased risk. >> there was more than a 150% increase in cardio vasc loor disease and 200% increase in depression, diabetes. >> we expect a lot from firefighters. it's difficult for them to get adequate amounts of sleep. we hope the results will lead fire departments to institute screening for sleep disorders. >> reporter: the firefighters have taken steps, they wear machines that help you breathe more easily and watch diet and exercise to improve their health. but sleep is a luxury when you

are on call. >> i don't think we'll get back to a sleep schedule until we retire. you just get used to what the schedule's like. >> in a job such as firefighters or e.r. doctors or air traffic controllers, where you are working long overnight hours that may affect when you sleep, to do everything you can to maximize the quality of your sleep. >> so how do you find out if you have sleep apnea? each of us on the show has taken some sort of sleep test this week. i tried the portable sleep lab to study whether i suffered from it. here to explain the results, dr. karl brazil, director at the division of epilepsy college of physicians and surgeons. good morning. >> good morning. >> as you mentioned, 18 million people suffer from sleep apnea. i use this portable sleep lab machine to test what my results would be. what does this device do and what is it looking for? >> it's a pretty simple device. it measures your breatheing and

effort of breathing, measures your heart rate. >> let's look at natalie's results. i'm curious apt this first one, settle this first and for all. >> natalie is on the top, perfectly level. someone with the buzzes are snores. so it shows this person snores. not everybody that has sleep apnea that one does. >> natalie does not. we got that. >> the results of her test on the breathing. >> her breathing is very, very regular, few look at the top line. on the bottom this person is stopping every 30 to 40 second, complete cessation of the breathing. so that's a problem. >> chest movement is another indicator as well. >> yours is very regular. with a person with sleep apnea, the movement continues that, shows you it's obstructive. the cleft is expanding, the person is trying to breathe. >> not to mention the heart beat. >> again, if you look at

natalie, very level. as your breathing stops, it's hard to see on that graphic, your heart rate can drop and go up and down a lot. which is a big straven on your heart, big fluctuations in health concerns. >> we have a recording of somebody who had sleep apnea. you can hear their breathing and the pattern. and the snoring. so if you can, what are the symptoms and the best ways to be able to tell if you, obviously, if you snore like that, i think. >> if you snore like that, then it stops, that's sleep apnea. not everybody makes noise. that's not 100%. if you wake up tired, that's a sign. if you wake up with a headache, that's a sign. if you are overweight, you are more likely to have it. >> real quick. treatment, the machines, we saw the guys at the the fire house using those. >> it keeps your airway opened when you are asleep. it's usually the best treatment.

real to come out with what she went through when you read in this book, it was remarkable. >> she speaks for the love and respect for her mom and understands it was a disease that overtook her life, at the same extent, i understood and i understand my mom perhaps better than anyone having gone through it. >> sugar coating. listen, parents aren't perfect, now she is a parent, to your point, she is able to look back with this reflection and things that may have hurt as a teenager, watching your mom leave you with a sitter while she drinks. she tries to understand and see it through her mom's pain. it's a beautiful growth for her. >> for a lot of her life, all she had walls her mom. it was the two of them coming up in the child eye. >> she was a child star of all child stars at the time. >> she has a very, she has a sense of humorant her mother. there is line, she talks about when her mother died, she put her ashes up between the mand
