tallahassee at 16 degrees below, make that 58 degrees in tallahassee. that's 16 degrees below average, indianapolis. even atlanta for today, a high of 47 degrees. 18 degrees below average. that's where gabe gutierrez is right now. and everybody is feeling the chill. my friend, you've got the puffer on and people are going to be staying in it for a while. >> reporter: hey, al. good morning. i don't know how i feel about this rokerthon thing, man. you know, two days ago, it was 60 degrees here, and now as you mentioned, we're dealing with temperatures about 26, 27 degrees, with the windchill, though, it feels much colder than that. but hey, we'll take it. other parts of the country are dealing with much worse. overnight up in the northeast, these are pictures from social media from new york, new jersey, and philadelphia. they dealt with some snowfall there in wisconsin. they've been dealing with brutal snowfall now for a little bit there. used to this type of stuff in december, but this is november. then until colorado as well, denver set a record low, negative 14 degrees.

the south has also seen a little bit of snowfall, memphis and little rock. but thankfully, here in atlanta, we do not expect a repeat of what we saw last winter, when 2 or 3 inches of snow and ice brought this city to a standstill. no precipitation is forecast until sunday, and then by then, temperatures are expected to be well above freezing. savannah? >> gabe gutierrez, thank you so much. or as al calls him -- >> my friend. >> he didn't know who he was talking to. >> he's to be forgiven this morning. >> all right. some other news this morning, doctors in nebraska are getting ready to treat the tenth case of ebola on american soil. the patient is arriving from sierra leone, where he'd been working as a surgeon. kristen dahlgren has more on that story for us. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie. a government official tells nbc news that the cdc has been notified. this is a surgeon who was working with ebola patients in sierra leone and tested positive for the disease on monday.

he's a citizen of sierra leone, but a permanent resident here in america. on saturday, he could be flown to the nebraska medical center in omaha, where two other patients, including nbc free lance cameraman ashoka mukpo has been treated successfully for ebola. a spokesperson for nebraska medical center wouldn't confirm that he was coming, but only that the medical crew on air jet picking him up would evaluate the patient and if he was stable enough for transport, he would arrive in omaha some time saturday afternoon. that would make him the only known ebola case in the u.s. the doctor being treated here in new york was just released on tuesday. >> if he does end up in nebraska, we know they're certainly equipped to handle it. now the fresh fallout from the secret service. a scathing new report detailing the security lapses that allowed an is intruder to enter the white house resident -- excuse me, the white house itself this past september. and this morning, it's raising a lot of tough questions for the agency. nbc's peter alexander is at the white house for us this morning.

peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. this is the nine-page review from the department of homeland security. they say that everything that could have gone wrong that night did. and it also lays out in detail when omar gonzalez got through the front doors here at the white house, where he doesn't run past agents, he walked. this is the home video of fence jumper omar gonzalez armed with a knife running across the white house north lawn in september. a highly critical new report from the department of homeland security reveals exactly what happened that night. after barging through the white house front doors, knocking a female secret service officer to the ground, reports say gonzalez walked past the officer, who accidentally grabbed a flashlight instead of her baton before pulling out her gun. ignoring commands to stop, gonzalez turned left and walked into the east room and then turned around and was eventually tackled by an officer in the center hallway. the report adds the armed counter-assault team didn't immediately enter the mansion because they were unfamiliar

with the layout of the white house and waited to get into a tactical formation before going in. >> this was just an unfortunate group of mishaps that all, unbelievably, happened at the exact same time. >> reporter: the rereview blames the secret service for a series of performance, organizational, it canal and other failures. it revealed the alarm systems and radios failed to work and many of the officers on duty didn't see gonzalez as he jumped the fence. among the failures, the inaction of a uniformed secret service k-9 handler inside a van whose ear piece was out and wasn't listening to his two-way radio. instead, the officer was taking a personal call on his cell phone, and only saw gonzalez after seeing another officer chasing him. the head of the house homeland security committee told nbc news, more hearings are planned. >> this is a premiere federal law enforcement agency that's really gone awry. >> reporter: the secret service says it's already changed its training and procedures. still, a law enforcement official tells nbc news that so

far, no one has been placed on administrative leave as a result of this report and that at least for now, the individuals involved remain on their post here at the white house. savannah and willie? >> all right. peter alexander, thank you very much. now to chilling new threats from isis. in a new video, the group lashes out again at the west and the man thought to be behind the message is the isis leader who some believe had been silenced for good. nbc's richard engel is in turkey for us this morning. what you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, willie. not just new data, there is new data that has come out from a respected british think tank that shows that u.s.-led air strikes against isis are not slowing down the group and that video appears to show that the group's leader is alive and well. he is perhaps the most wanted, most dangerous man in the world. the last time we saw abubacker al baghdadi was in early july, when dressed the part, he declared him the cliff or ruler

of his party. and then he disappeared. attacked daily by u.s. air strikes. until last week, iraqi officials claimed one of those air strikes killed or maybe just injured baghdadi. it seems those reports were wishful thinking. on thursday, in an audio recording which isis said was from baghdadi, a man sounding very much like him, called on others to join the cause. and unleash, quote, volcanos of jihad. >> he's showing that he's getting a lot more credibility and a lot more support. >> reporter: isis has proven effective on the battlefield and at the propaganda war, attracting more than just disillusioned lone wolves. a dangerous egyptian militant group recently pledged its allegiance to isis, as did an entire city in libya, run by militants.

peace. much of the heart of ferguson is hunkered down, fearing a repeat of the violence that followed michael brown's death in august. now as the grand jury hears from its final witnesses, including nationally renowned pathologist, dr. michael baden, hired by the brown family to perform an independent autopsy, and now under court order not to discuss his testimony. >> back, back. >> reporter: protesters gather in training sessions, preparing to take to the streets. >> people will be working to find the confidence they need, to go out there, despite their fears. >> reporter: at this gun shop and firing range, they say sales are running three times above normal. police who faced intense scrutiny for at times acting more like soldiers than cops say they'll respect the rights of demonstrators. >> but what we won't tolerate is when people start acts of violence, start to infringe upon the rights of others. >> caught in the middle, ordinary residents, worried about their town's reputation. >> a lot of people think, oh,

ferguson, things are crazy there. but we want to be here. and we have felt safe. absolutely safe. >> reporter: this week, the brown family took their case to the u.n., testifying about their son at a conference on torture. >> this fight is not over. i'm not giving up. >> reporter: demanding justice while also calling for peaceful protests in their son's name. school officials here are especially concerned about the safety of tens of thousands of students if a decision comes during the school day. we now understand, prosecutors have said they'll give the schools 24 hours notice if a decision comes on a weekend and three hours' notice on a weekday. natalie? >> ron allen in ferguson, missouri for us, thank, ron. caught in the cross fire, a police officer wounded by a ricochet of bullets and another officer is stabbed while confronting a knife-wielding man at a naval submarine base. this happened thursday night in groten, connecticut. officials say an officer fired at the man when he tried to enter the base through a pedestrian gate. another officer was hit by the

bullets, but is going to be okay. the suspect was not hurt, but was turned over to local police. president obama will travel to australia today to take part in the g-20 economic summit. earlier, the president met with myanmar's pro-democracy hero, awning sang suu aung san suu kyi. he was released from house arrest four years ago and is now a member of parliament. both leaders say they want to see more progress towards democratic reform in the country. and a big honor and a huge surprise for nbc's own brian williams thursday night. he was inducted into the new jersey hall of fame, but it was a surprise to almost everyone when the boss showed up to make the presentation. take a look. >> to paraphrase a friend of mine, it's walter cronkite and jon stewart had had a baby, and if due to the ongoing controversy over same-sex marriage, they had to abandon that baby on the new jersey

risks possibly associated with it. but i had risks before, and i think it's for a great cause. >> do you fear for your safety? >> i don't fear for it. i spent most of my adult life preparing for things that i'm prepared for, yes. >> there's so much to ask you and really not enough time. but let's talk about the raid. leading up to it, you were actually assigned to more of a supervisory role, outside the building itself, but you volunteered, hoping you would get in and get at shot a bin laden. >> the reason why -- i was perimeter security team leader, but i moved to the rooftop team, because after speaking with intelligence and who we were going after, if any house was going to blow up, this one would, and the most dangerous spot would be the rooftop team, and i wanted to go with my guys that would be there, to be with them. >> is it that you wanted a chance to take a shot at bin laden? >> i would take it if it came to me. i just wanted to be with my guys. if something happened, i wanted to be right next to them. >> and you guys felt like this was probably going to end right there for all of you.

you thought you were going on a mission that would end in either kill or capture for all of you. >> we were about 90% sure it was a one-way mission. >> what was your mind-set then? >> this is why we're here for. this is why we joined the military. this is why we became navy sa s s.e.a.l.s. this is the number one mission, the country asked us to do it, and we're going to accept. >> let's go to that moment. you walk in the room. bin laden is on the third floor, what happened? >> he was on the third floor. i was behind one man. we went up a stairwell through some curtains and there were some unknown people there that turned out to be women. he sort of pushed them back and fell into the hallway, in order to absorb what he thought would have been a blast. so he gave his life so the guy behind him could get a shot -- >> the point man, the navy s.e.a.l. who was leading it pushed the women away from bin laden. >> yeah, he did that giving his life. he didn't know it was me behind him, but i was right behind him.

>> was it your sense that bin laden was hiding behind those women? >> he was in a room behind another woman. >> you saw him, he was standing. >> he was standing up about 2 feet. >> what went through your mind? did you immediately recognize him? >> immediately, half a second, and he was not surrendering him. so in my rules of engagement, because if anyone's going to be wearing a suicide vest, it's this man. and just because he's not surrendering, he could, what we call, clack himself off, so he could be shot. >> when you took that shot, what was going through your mind? >> this wasn't my first mission. this was probably the mission 400 plus. so i took the shot, because that was my primary threat, and then i went to the secondary, the tertiary threat, which was to clear the room and make sure the other two in the room were properly taken care of. >> in retrospect now, take a moment back and reflect on it. how did he seem to you? did he seem in those moments in the dark, defiant, aggressive, resigned?

>> all he seemed to me was not surrendering and i can't say what he was thinking. had he surrendered, we would have taken him. because he could have been a lot of intelligence, obviously. was he was not surrendering and he was a threat. >> you stood over him and you say you watched him breathe his last breath. >> i did see that, yes. >> can you describe that moment? >> it was sort of surreal. and it was another target that we did, not the most difficult target that we've ever done. i'd saw that before and i saw it again. it was like, we have a little bit of time to collect more stuff, find more intelligence, so we can properly defend this country further and then we're going to leave. and at that point, you know, it's like, wow, we might get through this mission. >> you make it seem like another day at the office, in some ways. when did the momentous of it really kick in? >> it hit me a little bit after i shot him, because like i said, i had to clear the next threats in the room. part of that, it was his wife in the room, amal, i had to put her on the bed and he had a 2-year-old in the room as well, and we made sure he was next to

his mom, because when we're on these targets, one of the things we do, if there's kids involved, we try to make sure they're not more scared than they need to be, because they had nothing to do with this. when i did this and went back, other s.e.a.l.s were in the room and i stopped and one of my friends was looking at me, and i asked him, what do we do now, and he came over and put his hand on my shoulder and was like, now we find the computers. and i was like, i'm back. >> you know there are at least two conflicting accounts, but another s.e.a.l. says he's the one that actually finished off bin laden. that the first s.e.a.l., the point man, as you call him, fired a shot, a fatal shot, and then this man came in and finished him off. he, in essence, takes you out of the story. is he lying? >> no. i can only speak for what i saw. i can't -- this is the fog of war. and to say this mission, and the last few moments, were high stress, do a great disservice to high stress. so we're at top of our game

here. i can tell you what i saw, and what i saw was i went up the stairs behind the first guy as the number two man, i turned to the right, and osama bin laden was standing there, and i shot him, and i killed him. and, you know, regardless -- and there's no controversy as far as i'm concerned, fog of war. this was a very good thing that we did. >> every s.e.a.l. that went in there is as american hero. >> absolutely. >> why single yourself out and say, but i'm the one who shot him? >> well, i was never going to do that. that wasn't my plan. but because i came -- well, i came up to the museum to donate a shirt, i thought the shirt and the american flag would be the right thing to do. and while i was there, i met a lot of 9/11 families, and just me telling them that i could give them closure, not even closure sometimes, but help the healing process. and even today as i walk around and i meet, you know, the port authority and police department who, 37 papd officers went in and lost their lives from rookie up to the chief. and for them to say, yes, it was

our job, but we lost so many great americans, that we lost little league coaches, going to funerals of fatherless children, and what you're doing, not what i did, but what i'm doing is telling the story and helping them heal. and that is worth it to me. >> i'm sure you are a great comfort to many, many people, but as you also know, some of your fellow s.e.a.l.s and former supervisors say it betrays the s.e.a.l. ethos to make yourself public. saying that part of this ethos, this code is, i do not advertise the nature of my work nor seek recognition for my action. what do you say to that? >> even people who weren't on the mission, i have respect for their opinions. and they did respond and they should respond. i respect a response. but, you know, one of the things that we fought for was freedom. and a lot of these freedoms, free speech, and free opinion. and i hope they don't think i did the wrong. i hope they see i'm doing it for the right reasons. and you know, the reason is, this platform i've been given,

[ speaking in foreign language ] >> what does that mean? rokerthon? >> no, yeah, it does, in farsi. >> rokerthon is the same in every language. what did you say? >> if one acts, act as a liberator. or so they tell me. >> you convinced us. >> this show is really cool. a lot of people excited and talking about it. and it feels to me kind of like a thread we're seeing in tv right now. you have strong women in these sort of politically related shows, whether it's homeland or your show or "scandal" is another one. what attracted you to this role? >> i think for me, what i found most interesting about it was the idea of sort of looking at the cia from a different angle. we haven't really seen this side

of things, the analysts and langley and how they're responsible for sort of sifting through all the intel that's brought to them by the cia operatives and the assets out in the field. and they have to, you know, sift through tons and tons and tons of intelligence to narrow down the most critical threats and what's real and what's not and what's just chatter and what's actionable. so i kind of wanted to show that vibe and it sort of has a bit of a, like -- i hate comparing things to things, but it's sort of like newsroomy meets west wingy, meets "homeland." >> i'm in. >> you had me at "homeland." and you know, perhaps these strong female characters, not just your character, but the president of the united states is played by alfre woodward. the fact that the female is kind of besides the point, they're just good at their job.

>> exactly. and that's what was really important to me about it. let's not make a big thing about the fact it's a female president and a woman that's her briefer. let's make it that they're there because they're exceptionally good at what they do. that they have earned this place and it's not about, you know, them using their feminine wiles or what not to get there. it's just their talent, their ability, their level of intelligence and commitment to the country. >> you've done something recently, katherine, i thought was so cool and impressive, which is you've changed the way you think about your career now that you have children of your own. and in fact, you want to do roles that make your daughter proud. what'd you mean by that? >> well, i've always gravitated towards characters and stories that i find some measure of hope or inspiration in. you know, i just want sort of more uplifting stuff. that's just what appeals to me. and i have to feel on behalf of my kids, i just sort of want to tell those stories. how we survive, how we grow, how we learn from our mistakes, versus get, you know, demolished by them. >> and we're seeing picture of

after that 34-hour rokerthon. and in just a moment, we'll g the results of his alertness test. but first, we've all heard how dangerous drowsy driving can be. and this morning, "today" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is going to show us. >> this affects all of us, right, from college kids to senior citizens and everyone in between. new numbers out this morning, and they are staggering. take a look over here. because of drowsy driving, 100,000 car accidents every year. 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 deaths, all caused by drowsy driving. so we set up an extreme experiment, even perhaps more extreme than rokerthon, because i put myself to the test. 30 hours awake, a little less than roker, no sleep, no caffeine, but what would happen behind the wheel? my eyes may be open, but doctors say i'm essentially asleep right now, swerving behind the wheel of a car, all the effects of

drowsiness. a stress on the body that can have deadly effect. in june, a driver for walmart awake for more than 24 hours, police say, struck a car carrying actor tracy morgan, seriously injuring him and killing his close friend. and it can happen to anyone. >> nicole was a very bright, cheerful young lady. >> reporter: at only 18 years old, nicole lee had her whole life in front of her. >> my sister was an amazing young woman, full of life, and she was taken from us instantaneously. >> reporter: the virginia tech freshman was returning from a long day of skiing. her friend fell asleep behind the wheel. >> there were no skid marks or braking. he hit a tree on my sister's side of the car at full speed. >> reporter: to show you just how dangerous it can be, we set up a test at the skid harbor driving school in connecticut.

>> hi, jeff, how you doing? >> what are we doing today? >> take you through some technical obstacle courses and see how you drive. >> reporter: it's the middle of the afternoon, i'm wide awake and it shows, pulling off tight turns. >> good, nice and smooth. >> reporter: and last-minute lane changes, never hitting a single cone. that was a piece of cake. >> then i went home and kept myself awake for nearly 30 hours. >> it is about 1:00 a.m. and fatigue is starting to set in. we are deep into the infomercials now, 3:00 a.m. late-night pizza run. back to the driving track to see how i do. >> how we doing today? how you feeling? >> tired, but actually, i feel fine. i feel like this is the kind of situation that a lot of people drive in. maybe i could too. >> remember, any of the cones we hit, they're considered a crash. >> a little jerky. >> ali little bit. >> sorry. >> this time, i failed my driving test, again and again,

and again. ugh, it's frustrating. >> he's struggling. >> dr. charles sizeler of boston's brigham and women's hospital is one of the country's leading experts on sleep. he analyzed our video for signs of trouble. >> it's a dramatic distance. he's certainly impaired and struggling to stay awake and at any moment could lose that struggle. >> reporter: just a few experts of what experts call microsleep could be the difference between life and death. >> most people don't realize that part of the brain can be asleep while another part of the brain is awake. so you may be able to keep your foot full throttle on the accelerator and yet not have the judgment area of the brain engaged. >> reporter: for my final test, i began to drive for several miles, simulating a long highway trip, the deadliest for most drowsy drivers. my eyes are having a hard time focusing. that's when the instructor surprised me with an unexpected line of cones right in my path.

>> all of a sudden it happened, huh? >> that could have been an accident. >> that could have been a car, that could have been a person, it's scary. >> we easily could have stopped, but by the time that jeff put it together, it was too late. >> doctors say losing sleep for one night is the equivalent of being legally drunk. and here's a tip there experts. the best indicator that you're about to fall asleep behind the wheel is falling asleep behind the wheel. many of us, at least, have had that moment where you feel yourself nodding off and you jolt awake. you get that false sense of security that once your adrenaline is going, you're safe to drive, but doctors say that's the number one indicator that you will fall asleep again and nod off within a couple of minutes. thank goodness al doesn't drive, he rides his bike. so we're god on that. >> we've all been there, it's scary. thanks a lot. >> al has been through a lot in the last few days. he just completed a guinness world record, 34-hour weathercast. let's check in with dr. ana creager, good morning to you.

>> before we talk to you, al, physically, right now, you've been up well over 34 hours. how do you feel? >> i don't feel that tired, but i actually tried to sleep, catch up on sleep earlier in the week. but i know you can't really do that. >> doctor, after 34 hours like this, what would you expect to see in al? >> so, good morning. and i congratulate you for all your efforts in getting that record. your brain and body may not feel as rested, because over this whole period of time and lacking of sleep, your brain energy basically has been drained. so the brain processes speed and all the energy that goes through the body has been depleted. so you're going to feel very tired and you're going to notice some changes that can happen with your mood. you may feel a little edgy or irritable. and your appetite will definitely change. because the brain is now seeking for high-energy foods. >> so doctor, you performed a pvt test, which is essentially an alertness test. you did one before al started this 34-hour marathon and then

after. how big was the difference? >> it was very interesting. because al performed super well on the test. so we think he might be superman. >> after or before? >> both, actually. a very small difference on his case. so this test is used during research. basically, what we do, we have a test that looks at the eye to finger coordination and the response time. and al's response time was better than most of the high school students that we actually monitor. >> well, we know he's superman. >> so you can stay up another 34 hours. >> we have a little welding and forklift driving, since you're doing so well, al. dr. ana creager, thank you so much. coming up, soothing solut n solutions for your dry winter skin. and then two people brought together

car drive off, and that was the moment where i thought, i'm truly alone. >> reporter: in laramie, wyoming, 1,200 long miles away from her family and friends, mindy found the last thing she ever expected. >> i don't think that i've ever went to an establishment by myself to watch a colts game and i kind of look across the bar and there was a colts jersey sitting there. i took a deep breath, and kind of relaxed, like, that's a piece of home. >> when we started watching the games together, she knew the players and yelled at the officials and knew if it was a bad call or whatever, so i was impressed. >> reporter: for the first year, they were friends, bonded by their love of the colts. then, during the 2009 season, their team went to the super bowl and so did mindy and chad. >> honestly, i think maybe the super bowl was our first "date." i definitely fell in love with him there. we may have lost the game, but i gained a husband and a best friend. >> reporter: it's been almost

well, snow and chilly temperatures are gripping the country, for many that means winter skin problems. dr. debora is a new york dermatologist. dr. wattenberg, perfect time to see you. we'll start with the face. what can we do? you know the skin gets dry and itchy when the winter sets in? >> with the lack of humidity, we lose a lot of moisture in our skin. when you start with the face, what you want to do is change up some of your products. you want to gently exfoliate using something soft like a wash cloth and change to a soapless cleanser. all these products can be found in the drugstore. and if you take a little bit of this cetaphil cleanser and use the wash cloth to gently exfoliate and move on to applying a moisturizer, something that contains an spf, ceramide, a moisturizer. >> what about the lips? >> if you take a toothbrush and

lightly exfoliate -- >> rub a dry toothbrush on your lip? >> or even with a little bit of water. and apply some aquaphor or neutrogena lip balm, something to hydrate the lip and make it feel better. >> what about that lovely rudolph nose some of us get? >> you come in from the winter, your nose dilates and the blood rushes to it. so take a little bit of neosporin or any antibiotic ointment, put a little bit on your hand, and apply a little bit of cortizone, an anti-inflammatory, mix these together, and apply it on to that red area on your nose, you'll see a big difference. >> what about your hands and feet? >> the hands and feet are going to crack and get fissured and irritated. take your hand and soak it in water with a little bit of oil, take it out and pat dry, and you

apply a moisturizer. and you're going to look for something that says it's a hand cream or cuticle cream and apply it on there. and the reason to use this is it's rich in hyaluronic acids, there's more emollients and oils, and take some saran wrap or any plastic wrap and then the gloves, the glove is key, put a glove on to your hand and that will make a huge difference. >> what about the feet real quick? >> if you want to improve the feet, do the same thing as your hand, but exfoliate, get rid of the dry, dead skin, apply something with lactic acid and put a sock over it to put the moisture in. >> my hand feels fabulous. dr. wattenberg, thank you so much. coming up, we'll celebrate rokerthon with a little surprise. first, this is "today" on nbc.

this is a delicious cake right here, and it has festooned perfectly for the holidays. since we're continuing with the orange theme, with the color, and flavor as well, we add citrus ribbons here of orange, wide ones, thinner one and decorate it with pecans, some say pecans down south, pecans is another thing. so we have walnuts and toasted pumpkin seeds on there as well. your dessert is your centerpiece. >> the kids going for that, you know what i mean? >> they would stick their fingers in it. >> you got a cake, a cake stand, using a cake stand to raise this up off the table, so they can see it. >> i like the flat -- the table setting. >> to get a straight a, to setting tables, you got to know one, two, three. can you set a table setting? do you know forks, knives and spoons? >> yes, we were very disciplined that way. that's all i know.

>> forks have four letters, and knife and spoon has five letters. that's how i remember it. looking into the garden, one thing you like to do in the south, if we use magnolia, we would use -- here it is as our table setting, the place mats here. what i've done is i just used them and you set them at a clock-like pattern and place your dinner plate on top. we have the guest favors here. if it is in the south, we monogram it. here we go. these are basic white napkins and to give them a fresh spin, put a fun color that dark brown looks so good. >> i love not putting a tablecloth over the whole table. it is nice to see the wood with the burlap kind of runner. >> but then it is okay to mix silver in there, and invite generations to the table. use your mama's silver, mimi's silver. whether it is, you know, food, flowers, whatever, the fruit, just scattered throughout.

right now at 11:00, it's a snowy scene in the poconos. a live look at camelback mountain resort. they will make snow later today but got some of the real stuff last night. parts of monroe county saw 2 1/2 inches. our first snow of the season has melted away in most seasons but reminded us winter is fast approaching. chester county had 2.1 inches last night. people in south jersey got a trace of the white stuff. burlington county had one-tenth of an inch. the cold weather is not going anywhere.
