history. the biggest stars in the industry coming together for a new cause bringing bands back together today. sunday november 16, 2014. from nbc news, this is "today." with lester holt and erica hill live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and welcome to "today" on this sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> i'm lester holt with shanel jones. isis claim to have beheaded another american hostage. this is the u.s. aid worker peter kassing. richard angle is covering that story for us this morning in istanbul, turkey. good morning richard. >> reporter: good morning.

the family has issued a written statement saying they are aware of this claim by the militant group isis. they say they are still waiting for confirmation from u.s. authorities. american authorities are aware of the video but trying to confirm it. i've seen the video. it's similar to other videos we've seen before, the same style, graphics. it looks quite authentic. in it we don't actually see kassig be beheaded. you see mass executions but the militant with the british act sent claims kassig was executed because he had been a soldier serving in iraq before he decided to change his life, the 26-year-old, volunteering, going to syria to help refugee families to help give head kal services to the people in that

war torn country. he was captured one year ago. earlier last month, peter alexander spoke with the kassig family, to his father. the the father had received a letter from peter while in captivity. while also in captivity peter changed his name. this is what the father said about that letter. >> don't worry dad, if i go down, i won't go down thinking anything but what i know to be true this you and mom love me more than the moon and the stars. >> reporter: so now he has those effectively final words to think about as the family a waits confirmation hearing from him saying if i go down, i'll go down knowing you love me. a terrible turn of events. this would be the fifth western hostage isis has killed. isis has killed many other people, but this would be the fifth western hostage. we're waiting for confirmation.

>> thank you richard. the white house has responded to latest claim. kristen welker is traveling with the president in australia. good morning. >> erica, news of the beheading came an hour after president obama had left. he was here attending the g 20 economic summit. with the president still in route to d.c., his national security team release what had is becoming an all too familiar statement saying in part, quote, we are aware of a video that claims to show the murder of u.s. citizen peter kassig by isis is also known as isis. the intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine it's authenticity. if confirmed, we are a pal add by the brutal murder of an innocent american aid worker and express con doll enss to his family and friends. united states started targeting isis and iraq this summer after the first james foley was beheaded. during a press conference

earlier today, mr. obama said his administration holes weekly meetings about isis continues to learn about the group's weaknesses and assess u.s. policy. in an earlier statement a, president obama said it's too soon to know if u.s. is winning the war against isis. back to you. >> thanks kristen from australia this morning. >> a rapid response team is on the scene of a dead areally chemical spill outside of houston texas that left four dead and another hospitalized. there are deep concerns about the cloud of gas released for miles over the area. gabe gutierrez has more on the story for us. >> reporter: this morning officials are trying to figure out the cause of a deadly chemical league at a dupont plant in texas. it started saturday. >> we had the exposure of fyffi employees, four were fatal. >> the fifth is in the hospital.

the gas has a strong rot ten eg smell. it spread across the area up to 40 miles away. the company insists there was no danger. >> there was never a hazard to neighbors. there was a strong odor. we deeply apologize for that a nuisance. >> federal and local safety agencies are investigating. so is dupont. >> we'll find the cause. we don't know why this happened. >> the sense of unease may hang around longer. nbc news. turning now to the record break cold snap that is gripping much of the country. it has sent temperatures dipping to levels we usually don't see until dead of winter. everybody wants to know how long it will last. dylan has the magic eight ball

and several model. >> the cold is stretched as far east as it can go. we are going to see cold temperatures work back into the plains. we have snow that fell yesterday. this is minneapolis, an inch or so. it was windy. it was just enough to make roads slippery. temperatures have been so cold, obviously icy too. here's the polar vortex always sitting up to our north. every once in a while, chunks dip off of it. we are going to see the cold air spread south. rights now, it feels 14 below in sioux falls. this stretches to atlanta where it will feel 10 degrees by tuesday morning. monday morning's commute is going to be an absolute mess. slight risk of strong storms in florida and georgia. heavy rain along the corridor.

shanel is following those. >> good morning. we begin in eastern ukraine where after months of delay, death investigators are at the site of the malaysian mh 17 crash. they're collecting wreckage to transport those to the netherlands to look at the cause of the crash. the boeing 777 was shot down in july over the area of the ukraine controlled by russian backed rebels. centers for disease control and prevention will board a cruise ship today. so far 158 passengers and 14 crew members are sick a board the crown princess ship set to dock soon. an investigation into the death of a baby gorilla at the san francisco zoo suggest her pin was unsafe. she was killed last week when she unexpectedly darted under a closing door that doesn't stop when it hits something. a gorilla expert says staffers reportedly didn't have a clear

view of the door. zoo officials will ultimately decide how to proceed with safety recommendations. this morning people in hawaii are warned to stay indoors as heavy smoke is near the erupting volcano. saturday, a big lava flow began advancing on the island. officials say it's in order to yet posing immediate threat to residents. airplanes are urged to avoid the erupting volcano in alaska. it's 30,000 feet above sea level. one thing foreign leader can say agree on, cuddly koala. even australia's president eagerly posed for a pic with his counter part apparently warping a frost between the two leaders.

entire area monday, but for today, cloudy and cold, and then your seven-day forecast shows lots of changes. 56 degrees on monday with rain all day and then an arctic blast drops temperatures back down into the pos. that's your latest forecast. erica? >> dylan, thanks. this morning as we mentioned president obama is on his way from the g 20 summit in australia. before leaving for washington he offered tough talk for russian president vladimir putin. chuck todd, moderator of meet the press joins us this morning. >> there was interaction between president putin and not just the u.s. president but also a number of other world leaders at the summit. those relations described as polite but icy. what a could the impact be of those relationships, not just the u.s. president but other world leaders on president obama's a foreign policy at this point? >> i think when it comes to -- you brought up the putin issue.

he was with him in two different places, one in beijing at the asian economic conference, and of course this, g 20, world's largest 20 economies. there's some world leaders that are hoping this stand off between the united states and russia will sort of ease a little bit because the sanctions against russia are having a financial impact, particularly on european countries. i think it is notable the president early this morning, while having tough talk for putin, said there were no plans for new sanctions despite the fact really that putin hasn't changed any of these actions when it comes to ukraine. >> back home there's a lot of talk about this pending immigration reform that the president could announce. also, one would imagine a number of meetings behind closed doors between republicans that the point. what is -- how is that going to play out? is there a sense yet? >> there's not. in fact you have republicans --

they're meeting with themselves. republican leadership while wanting to confront and be tough with president obama if he indeed goes through on his own with executive action, the leadership doesn't want to do retribution threatening of shutdowns. you had the leadership of the republican party on capitol hill circulating a memo to fellow republicans reminding them of negative political impact the shutdown had on the republican party a year ago. there are some conservatives who say guess what, the shutdown didn't have impact or else republicans wouldn't have been so successful earlier this month during midterm elections. i think that's going to be one of the things we should be watching here. how are republicans going to deal with each other when it comes to reacting to the president? >> that's one of the things you'll tackle this morning on meet the press. anything else we should look for? >> we do a big health care focus as well. the debut of enrollment

now controversy. the group of norwegian film m makers say none of it is real. the film's director talked yesterday to norway tv. he says with this movie, we made a stiory where many things will go wrong, but it ends well. many are engaged in it. after three years of conflict, 1.6 million syrian children and refugees, schools and homes destroyed or occupied. these behind the scenes images of the production shot this past summer show the careful choreography of the cast and crew. while this may be like the baby snatching eagle and the fall seen around the world, this time it's backed by a cause to

nbc 10 news starts now. >> good morning. i'm rosemary conners, just a few minutes before 8:30. it's dry outside right now. not going to be the case later on today p let's get rig. let's get right to the forecast. >> another cold day on tap for us. as we head into our overnight hours, that's when we'll start to see the rain moving in. if you're the poconos, we could see a chance of a wintery mix. temperature range today, 45 to 48 degrees, and your seven-day forecast shows lots of changes as we head into monday, we have rainfall all day long. temperatures warm to the mid 50s, but then another arctic blast drops us into the 30s tuesday and wednesday. this morning, we've learned that a 10-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in delaware county is in good condition. nbc 10 was on the scene where police say the boy was shot last night in an industrial park. again, they determined that it was an accidental shooting.

the boy is being treated at children's hospital philadelphia. we do have some more details on this case that we'll let you know about at 9:00. taking down the letters part two. today workers are removing what's left of the pnb logo. you may recall that the project was supposed to be finished in august, but there were some problems. safety issues and the weather at the time. it was very windy. this is video from less than an hour ago as the helicopter brought one of the ns down to the ground near city hall. we'll check in with matt delucia at 9:00 for a live report. i'm rosemary conners. now back to the "today" show.

if you've ever cooked thanksgiving dinner, you know the pressure to deliver the perfect bird. things sometimes don't go as planned. >> yes. let's talk about. that we aspire to be the shop shelf on thanksgiving. turkey day, can be full of culinary mishaps. just ask any of us. remember when ray's mom on "everybody loves raymond" decided to go the diet route. >> look how it jiggles. >> and when joey on "friends" ruined monica's turkey. >> oh my god. oh my god. what is that? >> thanksgiving mishaps have a happened to us too. >> our first thanksgiving in new york city. the turkey wasn't ready.
