dangerous tornadoes. >> here in florida, tornado watches in effect for georgia and florida until 2:00 this afternoon. let's get to the maps and show you exactly what's going on. we started to see tornado activity firing up in the western panhandle. right now you can see the severe weather from orlando all the way up into parts of georgia. we have severe thunderstorm warnings. we have tornado warnings and tornado watches across a wide area, as these storms push east and north. this is a wide-ranging area from alabama all the way up to new york city with a potential of one to two inches of rain. and then also pushing into cold air, we've got right now a two-pronged attack of snow. two to three inches spreading from ohio into western new york. cleveland, ohio, right now, ground zero. that's where dylan dreyer has the one-two punch of this wintry mix. dylan, good morning. >> reporter: that's right, there's a warm side and a cold

side to this huge storm system that extends from new england, the great lakes right down into the south. hey it wouldn't be a workday if i wasn't on the cold side of the storm. looking at one to three inches of snow here in cleveland. that's not much. but it doesn't take much to cause problems. take a look at oklahoma city on sunday. just a few inches of snow fell. this pickup truck was overturned. cars were struck on the side of the roads and in texas it was only a half inch of snow that made the roads very icy. it led to this multi-vehicle accident that resulted in at least one death. now, where the snow fell yesterday is going to remain very icy. temperatures are below freezing. a little further to the north, we're in the teens and 20s. windchills are colder with a gusty wind moving in from the north. and we are going to see this whole storm system continue to drag down the cold. as for the snow and ice, it's in and around the great lakes, appalachians up into new

england. it's the same system that's producing the storms down south. this is a two-pronged affair. savannah? >> we'll keep an eye on that. 26-year-old peter kassig, former army ranger, had been held hostage for a year. the terror group, quote, bent only on sowing death and destruction. richard en gechlt l has the latest for us. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. a graphic, 16-minute video released by isis has been authenticated. we will not be showing it. no need to spread the group's propaganda. the fifth western hostage murdered by isis since august and the third american. at a vigil in indianapolis, friends, supporters and peter kassig's parents remembered the young man who decided to dedicate his life to helping others, but paid for it with his own. president obama called his murder by isis an act of pure evil.

the 26-year-old former army ranger who served in iraq travelled to syria last year to volunteer as a medic. isis militants stopped him at a checkpoint and kidnapped him. he is said to have suffered mental torture along with the trauma of seeing colleagues released after their countries paid ransoms. kassig converted to islam. >> he wanted to help the people involved in the humanitarian drama that is taking place in syria. and he thought -- maybe it was naive, but he thought he could help. >> he also watched his american and british cell mates taken out one by one to be murdered. he knew his time would come. last month his father read a passage from a are letter he wrote to him. >> don't worry, dad. if i go down, i won't go down

thinking anything but what i know to be true, that you and mom love me more than the moon and the stars. >> reporter: described as humble and generous, kassig tried to help victims of a war and ended up becoming one of them. unlike other isis execution videos, this one did not end with a specific threat to kill another hostage, but isis still holds other western hostages. savannah? >> thank you very much. unprecedented raid on a professional sports league, surprise drug sweep targeting several nfl teams after sunday's games. nbc's kristen dahlgren is here with this story this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. what they were looking for was pain killers amid allegations that some teams may be dispensing drugs illegally to help keep players on the field. at the end of sunday's new york/san francisco game, the visiting 49ers got a surprise visit of their own, from the dea, who questioned the before

letting them leave the stadium. >> they were interested in anybody with the team that might be handling medications that shouldn't be. for instance, trainers. a half dozen traveling teams were targeted in the sting. >> our reporting suggests that we did have reason to be interested in these particular teams base bad on interviews an information gathered the last few months. >> the nfl says our teams cooperated with the dea today and we have no information to indicate that irregularities were found. a spokesman for the 49ers said, in part, the 49ers medical staff complied and the team lecht tft stadium as scheduled. the baltimore ravens said we proceeded on to our plane without incident. the sweep comes in a tough year for the nfl, following the

domestic abuse allegations. while it's part of an ongoing investigation, triggered by the class action lawsuit filed in may by former players. some 1400 former players allege they were given addictive narcotics to keep them playing through injury. >> we need to try to make sure that the guys who are legends of this game, who are doing so much for this football game are better taken care of. >> last month the nfl asked a judge to throw out that lawsuit saying the teams and not the league were responsible. as for the dea investigation, it is being called ongoing. savannah, more teams could be targeted. >> kristen dahlgren, thank you so much. ebola crisis, doctors in nebraska are treating a surgeon who contracted the virus in africa and calling his situation an hour-by-hour situation. gabe gutierrez is in omaha with that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here in extremely critical condition, diagnosed with the virus last week.

doctors here are trying desperately to save his life. overnight, prayers for the latest ebola victim, dr. martin silia. a waiting ambulance, cocooned in a plastic pod, the patient too weak to walk. doctors are calling it an hour-by-hour situation. >> he is extremely ill, perhaps even more ill than any of the patient that is have been transported from western africa. >> reporter: the tenth ebola patient treated in the u.s. all but one lie bjorn native, thomas eric duncan, has survived. he is from west africa, but a legal u.s. resident. his 20-year-old son says he hasn't seen his dad in a month, shortly before he returned to sierra leone to help treat ebola patie

patients. >> even though you the sickness is already out he decided to go and help his people because he wanted to show that he loves his people. >> reporter: the worst ebola outbreak has claimed more than 5,000 lives. the 44-year-old doctor says the job was his calling. >> something inside of me that the people of this part of town needed help. i do this job not because i want to but i firmly believe it was a calling. >> reporter: dr. silia is the third ebola patient to be treated here at the nebraska's bio medical containment unit. his wife just arrived to be by his side. >> the story out of washington this morning, natalie? >> that's right. 100,000 people signed up for obamacare on saturday, the first day of the latest enrollment.

good morning. i'm vai sikahema. let's get our first alert forecast on a rainy monday morning from meteorologist bill henley. bill? >> it is a dreary one, but it is only rain as the temperatures are well above freezing and will be climbing as the day goes on, even as the rain intensifies during the day. there you can see the rain streaming up the i-95 corridor. heavier rainfall is looming to the west. that will be here this afternoon. right now, 42 degrees in philadelphia. the only troublesome spot, pocono mountains, where the temperatures are hovering right around freezing. the rest of the area, clouds, rain and 50s this afternoon. >> thank you, bill. we have a quick traffic note from delaware county to pass alo along. the ramp from 95 to 476 in ridley has reopened. it was shut down earlier after a car caught on fire.

and pope francis has made it official, he will visit philadelphia for next year's world meeting of families. philadelphia archbishop charles chaput was with the pontiff this morning in rome for the announcement. pope francis is expected to celebrate mass on the ben franklin parkway to conclude the conference next september. they're expecting anywhere from 1 million to 2 million people to attend mass there that day. the hearings continue today over whether to revoke a philadelphia school's charter because of academic and financial concerns. walter palmer charter school is also the subject of a federal investigation. a court recently ordered the school to return more than $1 million to the philadelphia school district after finding that it enrolled twice the number of students allowed. walter palmer already shut down its high school last month. i'm vai sikahema. we'll have another update in 25 minutes. and of course, you can always get the latest news and weather on nbc10.com. back to the "today" show. see you in a half hour.

battling some very unwanted headlines. with his wife, camille, by his side, legendary comedian bill cosby sat silent as he was asked about the allegations. >> there have been serious allegations raised about you in recent days. you're shaking your head no. i'm in the news business. i have to ask the question. do you have any response to those charges? shaking your head no. >> reporter: hours later in a statement, cosby's attorney said over the last several weeks, decade old discredited allegations against mr. cosby have resurfaced. the fact that they are being repeated does not mean they're true. >> reporter: barbara bowman wrote an op-ed titled bill cosby raped me. why did it take 30 years for people to believe my story?

>> these are allegations that date back in some cases, decades. there's no legal recourse for the alleged victims here. >> there's no way to resolve this, savannah, because the statutes of limitations have all run apparently. >> either on a criminal case or civil suit? >> that's right. we'll never have these accusers cross examined or mr. cosby cross examined. it's going to remain in legal limbo for the rest of his life. >> did any of these alleged victims try to pursue a criminal case? >> one did in canada in 2004. the canadian authorities did not prosecute. they said there was not sufficient evidence. she pursued a civil case, then settled with a high degree of confidentiality. >> when you look at these stories and you start reading these allegations -- as you mentioned, they are just allegations. there is a thread of commonality. >> right. >> something similar about them. >> that's what gives them the air of credibility. not only is there a large number of them but they all tell -- many tell a similar story, of

it started just after 11:00 last night on east shelton avenue in the germantown section. the knerofficers were on the sc first and tried to rescue the man. they suffered smoke inhalation. three others made it out safely. investigators say the fire may have been electrical in nature. the victim has not yet been identified. the montgomery county man accused of sending his romantic rival a toxic birthday card is set to go on trial today. nicholas helman of hatboro faces several charges, including attempted murder. he was arrested back in march. authorities say he laced the card with ricin, a poisonous substance, and put it in the mailbox of a mandating his ex-girlfriend in warminster township. police intercepted it after one of helman's co-workers tipped them off. investigators say he told them he coated the card with sodium hydroxide, but it later tested positive for ricin. i'm vai sikahema. we'll have another update in about 25 minutes. of course, you can always get the latest news and weather at nbc10.com.
