dry air, that's allowing the temperatures to come down as well. the wind is not completely gone, it's just not as strong as yesterday. that's the view from center city. 23 degrees right now in philadelphia. that's just three degrees above the record low of 20 degrees. it's close to record territory for reading, just two degrees above the record, and mt. pocono just two degrees above the record at 12 degrees. factor in the breeze, it feels like 11 in philadelphia, 6 below in the pocono mountains. it's a cold start this morning. 20 degrees at 7:00, 24 at 9:00, and by lunchtime with sunshine, we'll still be in the 20s, up to 29 degrees at noontime today. i'll be back in less than ten minutes with the future weather. we'll go through it hour by hour. first, nbc 10's jesse gary is live along the black horse pike from camden county. good morning, jesse. >> reporter: bill, good morning to you and a very cold morning. let me show you what's going on behind me. crews are installing an

turnpike. one person died last night when three tractor-trailers collided in cranberry township. and take a look at this video sent in by a viewer. you can see the immediate aftermath there. the trucks collided around 9:00 last night. they burst into flames. about two hours after that, this is what the wreckage looked like from skyforce10, nothing left there but smoldering metal and ashes. there's no word yet on the conditions of the other drivers. again, one was killed. and let's turn now to nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jillian mele for the impact of that crash and what else is happening this morning. >> i'll focus on this crash now and then get back to what else is going on in a few minutes. right now on the northbound side of the new jersey turnpike, between the pennsylvania turnpike and hightstown exits 6 and 8, that is still blocked off this morning. but this is part of that in the area of the long-term construction that's been going on on the new jersey turnpike, so the outer lanes, that's what's going to be blocked off. the inner lanes is going to be okay. but if you want to avoid this mess this morning because it's still out there, cleanup is still going on, the

investigation is still happening, i have two different alternates for you. you can take route 130, route 9, or you could take 295 in this area for a little while, as you see right here, where it runs parallel to the new jersey turnpike. i'll have more information on this in a few minutes and a check of the local roads. 4:04. new this morning, pornographic e-mails exchanged by pennsylvania state employees on public computers contained images of children and violent acts against women. attorney general kathleen kane called the images deplorable. so far, she has fired four employees and suspended eleven. these e-mails came to life when the ag's office investigated its own handling of the jerry sandusky sex abuse case. we have new information this morning on the hazing scandal that wiped out the football season for a high school in north jersey. four assistant coaches suspended from sayreville war memorial high school can now return to teaching. that decision came last night from school officials in middlesex county. they did not reinstate the head football coach.

seven players face juvenile charges of sexual assault and other crimes against four freshmen teammates. and in another high school hazing scandal, this one in pennsylvania, the head coach at central bucks west has lost his job on the field. yesterday, the school removed brian hensel as coach and lifted suspensions for his assistants. hensel will get to keep his job as a teacher. the school canceled the final two games of the season after allegations surfaced that upper classmen were targeting freshmen on the team. it's a trial that could affect every public school student in new jersey. today a judge will hear arguments about whether children should say the words "under god" in the pledge of allegiance. an atheist group is suing to cut out those words from the pledge. the american humanist association is the name of the group that filed suit in monmouth county. a judge in massachusetts threw out a similar lawsuit earlier this year. looking ahead now to decision 2015, and we expect to hear the next two names to enter the race for philadelphia mayor today. state senator anthony williams

and former philadelphia district attorney lynn abraham plan to formally announce their bids today. they're both democrats. two other democrats have already announced that they're running, terry gillen, former head of the philadelphia redevelopment authority and ken trujilltrujil former solicitor. and a spokesperson for current mayor michael nutter launched a exploratory committee to look into the race. doug oliver was considering a run as a republican. nowhe says if he throws his hat into the ring, it will be as a democrat. oliver said he will make a decision in the next two months. philadelphia city council says it wants to make sure your holiday travel goes smoothly. that's why they're holding a special hearing later today meant to promote labor harmony at philadelphia international airport. airport workers have been protesting what they call low pay, unsafe working conditions and other problems. council will hear from workers, airline industry experts and labor leaders at this morning's hearing.

fire fueled by a forceful wind devoured a popular south jersey farmers market yesterday. the columbus farmers market in burlington county burned to the ground yesterday afternoon, destroying ten businesses inside. strong wind and cold weather made it difficult for firefighters to put out the fire. store owners lost everything in a matter of minutes. >> it was in bad shape when we bought it, and we brought it back to life and worked hard to get it where it's at now, and now it's destroyed. >> now, no one was inside the market at the time. since the market is only open thursdays through sundays at this time of year. investigators are still working to find out what caused the fire. it's unclear if the unaffected businesses will reopen on thanksgiving day, as they had planned. a newspaper report says cooper hospital ceo and his wife were stabbed before fire broke out inside their home in september. a family member told "the courier post" that john sheridan and his wife, joyce, were stabbed several times each. their bodies were found inside

their somerset county home after fire broke out in their bedroom. the family member did not say who may have been behind those attacks. we're working now to get reaction to this report from authorities. eight minutes after 4:00 now. and new from overnight, police say in new york that the man who killed a stranger by pushing him in front of a subway train is off the streets now. officers arrested kevin darden last night. he's also accused in another random subway attack two weeks ago. the victim in that case was not seriously hurt. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it is cold outside. the temperatures are coming down and we're watching for records to fall this morning and we're very close, within just a couple degrees in a couple areas. and the windchills, they're back. it's not as strong a wind as yesterday, but when it's this cold outside, you don't need a lot of wind to make it feel even colder. single digits for parts of the area. the good news is there's warm weather on the horizon for the weekend. the temperatures will take a leap. but until then, we'll be

tracking the cold. look at this, 20 degrees right now in reading. that's two degrees above the record low for this date. 23 in philadelphia, that's three degrees above the record low. and it's 21 right now in trenton. and they're taking advantage of the cold weather. they're making snow in the pocono mountains. this is the view from blue mountain this morning. temperatures may be feeling even colder by the wind that is going to be lighter than yesterday but just enough this morning to give us even colder conditions. 14-mile-an-hour wind in philadelphia. it's now at 18 miles an hour in the pocono mountains, and we're still tracking some gusts in the area, gusting to 22 miles an hour right now. a little bit stronger at the shore. wildwood 28-mile-an-hour winds. so, the windchills range from 6 below in the pocono mountains, 9 right now in allentown and pottstown, and 11 degrees for northeast philadelphia at the airport and philadelphia international. in fact, right across delaware and south jersey, plenty of cold to go around today. we will see sunshine. no sign of any clouds for our area. we will stay in the clear.

weather and the problems they're anticipating. also when we see you in a half hour, we'll talk about those items that should be in your car preparedness kit. do you have them? reporting live in southwest philadelphia, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. 16 minutes after 4:00. this morning a honduran woman refuses to leave a philadelphia church as she battles the government over deportation. angela navarro is defying federal orders to leave the country, taking sanctuary with her family at a church in west kensington. navarro was ordered a deportation issue ten years ago when she was caught on the u.s./mexico border. since then, she's met a husband, had kids and worked as a cook until she recently received a final order from the government. her case is meant to be a high-profile act of civil disobediance. >> you guys are trying to make a point. >> yeah, we're trying to make a point so everybody can see what we're doing. >> now, in some other states, sanctuary refugees like angela have been granted reprieve. also, president obama has indicated that he will soon take action on the overall immigration issue.

in washington, police had to remove protesters from the senate chambers after senators failed to approve the keystone xl pipeline project. one of the protesters was chanting and wearing a native american headdress. police handcuffed and removed five people, including a man who's identified as a member of the great sioux nation, which opposes the pipeline. now, the bill to approve that pipeline needed 60 votes in the senate and got only 59. the house passed it last week. republicans are promising to put it up for a vote again in january when the gop takes control of the senate. happening today, a u.s. house hearing on the secret service. members of the judiciary committee will be asking director jonathan clancy about a series of recent security lapses at the white house. one of those includes the man who jumped the fence a few weeks ago and ran inside the executive mansion. the committee will examine problems looking for solutions to prevent security breaches from happening in the future. also on capitol hill today, the house oversight committee will hold a hearing on data security at the u.s. postal

service. last week, the post office revealed that a cyber attack had exposed the personal information of 800,000 postal workers. lawmakers will question officials on why it took the postal service two months before it went public about that attack. this morning, new efforts to fight ebola are gathering some steam and some money. the bill and melinda gates foundation is giving close to $6 million to ramp up production of ebola treatment. that money will help fund tests on experimental drugs and the collection of blood plasma from ebola survivors to treat new victims of the disease. a study on the effectiveness of survivor plasma will begin in about one month. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> and again, a look at what is happening in buffalo. take a look at this video here. people are living in 4 feet of snow there. and today they're going to get more of it. time for round two. that's lake-effect snow. by this afternoon, the snow totals could top 6 feet. and another problem there is the wind. they have whiteout conditions.

a lot of people without power. it appears even buffalo could be caught off guard by an early blast of winter. meteorologist bill henley in now. so, i guess we're showing people that video in the at least you're not living here category? >> it is the same system. they've got wind and cold, we have wind and cold. the difference is we don't have a massive lake just off to the north. >> thank goodness. >> that lake wind is a cold one, and that's producing all the snow. good news, don't have the snow. we have clear skies and the temperatures are still coming down, but we're watching the wind, not as strong as yesterday, but just enough to give us single digits for parts of the area. and the wind will still be with us even this afternoon. sunshine will be bright. that's the good news. we will pop above freezing this afternoon. we struggled to get to the freezing mark yesterday afternoon. right now we're watching the temperatures fall, and they're still coming down. now, if we didn't have this wind, we would already be in the record books this morning. it allows for a little bit of mixing. now it's 23 degrees. that's actually bounced up a degree in the last hour.

windchill, though, is 11 degrees, thanks to winds that are out of the west to 14 miles an hour. and it's a cold start in the pocono mountains. they're heading towards 10 degrees this morning. in fact, there are a couple spots that have already reached down into the teens and one spot at 10. trenton is 21 degrees. 22 in washington township. wilmington is 23, but look at the teens north and west. 19 right now in quakertown and doylestown. coatesville is at 19 degrees and shenandoah is at 10 degrees right now. and there's plenty of cold to go around for delaware and south jersey. vineland is at 20 degrees and may drop into the teens before the temperatures start to warm up. here's the good news, nothing falling in our area. the nearest snowflakes are in central pennsylvania. those are not going to make it over the hills. we will stay dry and nice and sunny through the day. but late this afternoon, there will be some clouds moving in. the future weather shows those clouds coming in. that's the good news, because that's going to keep us warmer tomorrow morning. it won't be as cold. we'll see 20s and low 30s. and then tomorrow afternoon,

after a warmer start, we'll be in the 40s. but that is not the end of the cold. we will see more cold before things warm up over the weekend. but this will be the coldest today. very cold to start with. afternoon temperatures in the low to mid-30s with the wind out of the west 8 to 15 miles an hour. seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. 4:21. katy zachry was telling us about the problems with the cold weather, cars not starting, batteries dead. hopefully, no stranded vehicles out on the roadways this morning. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jillian mele is looking at that. jillian? >> good morning to you, chris. we're dealing with some construction, overnight road work, believe it or not, even in these frigid temperatures. the work has to get done, so we have that out here, 95 northbound. you can see right here the right lane is blocked as drivers approach cottman avenue, but it's still too early, so it's not causing a delay in the area, but still something to be aware of. heading to hamilton township, we have a downed pole on the southbound side of route i-30 as you approach interstate 195. right lane is blocked.

and new jersey turnpike northbound past hightstown, exit 8 and 8a area, lanes are restricted with an overnight accident. take route 130 or route 9, of course, depending where you're headed this morning. chris. 4:22. from our delaware bureau, the state says it will make changes in a red light camera controversy that drivers say is not fair to their wallets. thousands of drivers have gotten tickets at concord and broom roads, right off i-95 in wilmington. the reason, cars not coming to a complete stop before making a right turn, but drivers say that's because they have already stopped before coming into view of the camera because the painted line for stopping is 40 feet from the intersection. they say they will move the line closer to the camera. black friday may soon be a thing of the past. why experts say retailers shot themselves in the proverbial foot. and what's in a name? well, a lot for a group of women in delaware. we'll tell you why they're petitioning to change the name of their game.
