>> announcer: nbc10 breaking news. that breaking news is this, a campus shooting in florida at florida state university where a gunman got into a battle at the library. here at home, a cold morning but a definite improvement over what we saw this time yesterday. at least we're not tying any record lows as we get ready for a bit of a warmup. and we use the term warmup in the loosest sense. good morning, i'm chris cato on this thursday. let's start with meteorologist bill henley and the "first alert" forecast. bill, the biggest difference out there is this morning for me is you don't feel the wind. >> areas north and west, with some breaks in the clouds have

seen the temperatures plunge into the 20s so there is some cold air. and there's a live view from camelback. right now, the radar is in the clear for the area. as far as the temperatures are concerned, we are watching them come down this morning. and it's going to be a cold start around the area. right now, in philadelphia, it is in the 30s but north and west it's dropped in the 20s for pottstown, allentown, reading 30 right now in wilmington, 34. hour-by-hour forecast calling for a cold start. 31 degrees at 7:00. it will be up to 35 degrees at 9:00. that's warmer than all afternoon yesterday. and 40 degrees at noon time. and still climbing, colder air moving in at the end of the day. we'll go through it with the future weather. right now, let's check in by "first alert" reporter jillian

mele. >> good morning, we're starting off all accident-free in pennsylvania and delaware and new jersey. you see i-95 in the middle of the long-term construction zone so no delays to report. heading into new jersey, 295 between the 42 freeway and route 30. we have some construction out there that both directions scheduled to be out there until about 5:00 a.m. drivers in delaware, northbound before police shot and killed the gunman. we do have pictures from the scene. the shooting happened at the school library. university police urged people to take shelter in a nearby building. we just got in video that shows students listening to an announcement made in the library. >> we have had a shooting in the library. stay where you are. we'll be coming to take care of everybody. >> reports on social media say

there were more than 100 students rushing from the building after the shots went out. just in the past few minutes, florida state sent a tweet saying there's no threat on campus at this time. we'll continue to monitor the situation, information coming in and pictures pand twe s and twe. new from overnight, a philadelphia police officer crashed his patrol car in germantown. nbc10 was there at schuman and east haines street. police say the officer was taken to the hospital but should be okay. we're looking to figure out if other people were hurt and what caused the accident. and two death sentences for a woman and a baby killed by a man. last month a jury convicted yanda morey, and he abducted the

baby and killed the grandmother. he said he planned to hold the baby for ransom to pay off gambling debts but then he killed the baby, too. police say someone shot trooper in the arm while he questioned a woman about have stolen goods. the state troopers association will announce details about that award money later this morning. today, dozens of porters at philadelphia international airport will go on a one-day strike. they worked for primeflight. they say they will walk off the job at 7:00 to protest working conditions. and wages. five minutes after 4:00 now, president obama has prepared a prime time address for tonight on immigration reform. the president said he will take executive action to allow up to 5 million undocumented immigrant stos stay in the u.s.

republicans have vowed to fight this move. none of the three major broadcast networks will carry the president's speech tonight. we will live stream our address on the website at 8:00 p.m. on nbc10.com. police say a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel just before his big rig caused a deadly pileup near allentown yesterday. steve bernier appeared at arraignment. police say he caused the crash on route 22 in maiden creek township that killed two people and injured two others. you see the jumble of vehicles here. three survivors managed to walk away from the red car in the middle of that pileup. >> when it was over, i'm sitting there and not knowing if i'm dead or alive. the sound is something that i'll never get out of my head. and i just don't know how i'm going to deal with that, honestly. >> he's charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary

manslaughter and aggravated assault. we did find a criminal record. bernier shows on the sex offenders registry known as megan's list. we also checked his driving history and reports show that police gave him a driving ticket this past summer. the truck driving company released the statement saying we are praying for all of involved in today's terrible accident. we cannot sufficiently express our deepest condolences to all who have been impacted by this tragic event. six minutes after 4 and it is not over in buffalo. a second wave of lake-effect snow will hit that area purpling 4 feet already on the ground there. look at this video. dozens and dozens of cars stranded on highways throughout the buffalo area.

the sheriff's office helicopter captured these pictures. and several hundred member eggs of the new york national guard are pouring into the buffalo area now to help with snow removal and recovery. the storm killed seven people. there was a state of emergency in effect in that region. and look at this, snow has just about filled up the buffalo bills stadium. crews will work overtime to try to remove the estimated 220 tons of snow in time for sunday's game between the bills and the jets. the team has asked for help. fans to stand up will get $10 an hour and free tickets to the game. meteorologist bill henley, that did not bring us snow, but the cold wind we saw yesterday and today? >> it sure did. cold is still in place in some areas, but the fog came in overnight. and we will see more sunshine during the day today and warmer temperatures during the

afternoon but it will be a breezy day. so the temperatures will warm and early in the afternoon, likely peak. and then the wind kicks in and the cold returns for tomorrow. you will feel the difference, especially tomorrow morning when the temperatures will be back in the 20s it will really plunge overnight. this morning, north and west, skies have cleared it's 25 degrees. look at the difference from doylestown to philadelphia, 36 degrees. and cape may, just one degree below the 40-degree mark right now. clear skies. we'll see lots of sunshine. no precipitation in philadelphia. we're watching for a few flurries off to the north and west. but they won't last either. you can see completely dry in philadelphia and south jersey. but these very light snowflakes likely not reaching the ground, the air is so dry below these showers that it's evaporating before it hits the ground. so we will see, maybe a few snowflakes, if not in the lehigh

valley and berks county, it will turn out to be a mild day today. even though it's going to be colder tomorrow. we're still on track for a warm weekend. big turnaround in the temperatures. the sunday future wherth we come back in less than ten minutes. nine minutes after 4:00, we saw the video of that mess in allentown. let's hope that roads are problem-free. >> you know, chris, just in the last few minutes i got word of an accident blocking the ramp from the vine street expressway westbound. for drivers trying to make their way out of center city philadelphia to the western suburbs, unfortunately right now you can't get on 76 from the vine. you can see we have police and an ambulance out there. trying to figure out exactly how many vehicle, involved in the accident. exactly what's going on. it looks like fire department activity just getting to the scene right now. this is happening in the last few minutes. you can see from the bottom portion of your screen, some of

those drivers stuff stuck there. it's very tough to see exactly what's going on. looks like a vehicle involved in this accident. it's a pretty tough curve in that area, oftentimes, if we see an accident on this ramp, it's going to be right at this location. so this is something we will continue to follow four and get you new information as we have it. take a that just happened. i'll be back with a few minutes before the update. a big bet gone bad. the company that awon't bid to buy the closed revel hotel and casino has backed out of that deal. nbc10's jesse gary is live in atlantic city for us with more on why the corporation that had the winning hand folded. jesse? >> reporter: chris, yeah, the owners of the taj say they don't have enough money to keep operating beyond december 12th. that announcement prompted workers to protest out in front of the atlantic city landmark,

the taj shutting its doors in december would bring the total number of closed atlantic city casinos to five this year. despite that, the mayor of the city says this is still the place to be in new jersey. i'm investigating why he feels that way. live in atlantic city, jesse gary "nbc10 news." united is ending its flighting to a. krfrlgts and chicago and houston on december 3rd. the airline said those flights will dot bring in enough business. thanksgiving, believe it or not, is one week from today. that means a lot of are making your plans to gear up and head out of town. we'll show you which days are best to avoid.worst traffic. and dangerous for traveling teenagers. the school days throughout the state and how parents can protect them.

well, we are just a week away from turkey day. and this year, more people are planning to leave home for that main course. according to a survive by trip adviser, 43% of americans will travel over the holiday. and that's actually an increase. 50, that's up 7% from 2014. 35% will fly. and 50% will drive. now, that's largely because of the lower gas prices. people will travel farther for their turkey and stuffing. 50% will log more than 200 miles. that's a 10% increase over last year. if you want to beat the rush, what's the best day to leave?

we've got it planned out for you here. according to this trip adviser survey, believe it or not, 20% of people say they will leave before monday. a lot of people getting an early start. 24% will leave on wednesday. then you have the procrastinators or people with short distances to drive. they're actually leaving on thanksgiving day. the volume evenly distributed. so your best bet if you want to beat the rush is actually to leave right now if you want to get a jump on things. let's talk about when is the best day to come home. the sunday after thanksgiving is generally considered the busiest travel day of the year. 30% of those surveyed say that's when they will return. 22% will leave on saturday. 25 will actually extend their visit and return after sunday. i hope that the people that they're staying with are aware of those plans. this is one survey. aaa is considered the guru on holiday travel. and the local loves release

jerry sandusky child abuse matter. they believe releasing all of the documents will provide clarity to the public. the documents in question have to do with the fines and penalties the university faced following the sandusky scandal. and authorities will soon take a villanova student to wisconsin to face sex assault charges there. radner township police arrested vincent paoli yesterday. back in july, a woman contacted police and said someone sexually assaulted her while she was in milwaukee. police in both locations began working that case. detectives tell us piece yola, a business student, was in wisconsin for a class trip. it's hard to forget these image, a video attacking a man in front of her toddler. a woman was caught on video

beating that other woman. she turned herself in after a cell phone video appears. a grand jury has indict her on assault charges. incident happened in salem township. and in the video we remember the woman's 2-year-old son trying to stop that attack. there's the video of that attack. police have arrested a man in another robbery attempt near the university of temple campus. police tell nbc10 that the man tried to rob a temple student near 18th and diamond street around 7:00 last night. investigators say robbers used guns in at least two of those recent holdups. keeping alert and staying safe. that's the purpose behind a public meeting tonight on some recent crimes in south philadelphia. town watch and community members will hold the first of two meetings tonight at 18th and john storn street. that's where a robbery and attempted rape took place last friday. the second meeting is set for tomorrow might at marconi park which is the scene of an

attempted abduction on monday. >> announcer: now your nbc10 "first alert" weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's a cold start areas north and west. back in the 20s this morning. but not everybody is seeing that very cold air. the wind has died down for now. will be picking up this afternoon. that's going to drop temperatures later on. 36 degrees right now in philadelphia. 13 degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this time. the wind is now blowing at 9 miles an hour. a windchill of 29 degrees. overall you for most of the area it's not as cold. but cold enough for snowmaking and possibly a few snow flurries in the pocono mountains as clouds are moving into areas north and west. look at the middle 30s for wilmington, philadelphia, all above freezing. but go north and west, and this is where the colder air is. you can see as you get farther and farther away from the delaware river. temperatures drop 36 degrees. langhorne, go inland at 20s for

doylestown and fairmont down to 20 degrees. 21 right now and low 20s for concernedsville and quakertown. not everybody is seeing the milder air this morning. here's the clouds moving in, lehigh valley, berks county, most of these evaporating. but you may see a few flurries. even more likely in the pocono mountains. these clouds will be out of here, we'll see lots of sunshine. and then the winds will pick up. and that, snow, north and west, more cold air waiting in the wings to return tomorrow. future weather showing temperatures climbing into the low 40s by this afternoon. late tonight and tomorrow morning, here comes the cold once again. the westerly winds will be with us on friday. and temperatures will start in the 20s. so stand by for a run to the cold. after we have a milder day today. mostly sunny skies. a bit breezy, but high temperatures will be in the 40s. still on track for much warmer weather to arrive over the

weekend. the full seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. it's 4:21, we have something to alert you to at the vine street expressway. jillian mele has an update. >> that's right, good morning to you, chris. out to 79 westbound, you can see the ramp is completely blocked off. we had police activity throughout. we saw an ambulance and fire department leave the scene. but this ramp is still blocked. again, the ramp from the vine westbound out to 76. if you're leaving center city, how to bala cynwyd and the conshohocken area. you can see no one is moving out here. the right lane that's the only lane moving on the vine westbound. and i'll tell you why. that's because these ramps, there's two of them at the end of the vine. the left two two lanes, that's the drivers stuck behind this accident. this right lane actually goes to

76 eastbound. so what you can do. you can stay on the right lane. get on 76 eastbound on 30th street. loop around and 76 westbound. it will take you a few extra minutes. as you can see, that's the only lane moving. those drivers trying to get on 76 westbound. unfortunately, chris, they're stuck. new research shows teenagers with earlier school start times have an increased risk of getting into a crash. the study compared teen accident rates at a school that started at 7:20 and one that began at 8:45. the crash rate was 29% higher at the one that started earlier. and federal regulators have recommended better sleeping for sleep disorders after the investigation of the deadly train derailment in new york. investigators believe sleepiness caused the accident.

the national transportation safety board said obstructive sleep apnea caused that. and in the area, i know you're itching to find out who with and finishing the big fix. when the delaware 495 bridge will be back to normal. and the final price tag for that roadway.
