his first alert forecast. we began with a warm up yesterday afternoon. >> back in the ice box and temperatures have dropped in the 20s and most of the areas below freezing and still falling with wind that makes it feel even colder. in the teens in the pocono mountains and camelback is taking advantage of the cold weather and the wind is going to be a factor through the day today. already we're starting off with winds of 17 miles an hour in philadelphia. little bit lighter north and west in pott stown and trenton. 29 in northeast philadelphia and wilmington is 29 but it feels like 20 degrees in wilmington and 20 degrees in the city. a cold day, but a sunny one ahead 34 by lunchtime. your hour-by-hour future weather and right now let's check in with traffic reporter jillian

mele. good morning. >> the vine street expressway is very quiet out there in both directions. no accidents and no delays to report, that is a bit of good news. following normal construction and multiple spots in and some in lehigh valley exit and the normal exits and nothing that is creating any massive delays right now. into delaware heavy construction between 495 and maryland avenue. the left lane is blocked there. chris? 4:02 now. this breaking news in north hampton county. right now crews are checking a gas line. investigating it to make sure it's not ruptured. this situation has forced the evacuation of more than a dozen homes in bethlehem, north hampton county. the gas line situation is happening on hampton road and jesse gary arrived there a few minutes ago on scene. jesse, it wasn't a gas line that led to this problem. tell us what happened there.

>> well, chris, initially, it was a water main break that brought utility crews out here. i'll move out of the way. while they were fixing that, a sinkhole developed under a ugi utility truck and you see the sinkhole right there. they are looking into the sinkhole to see if a four inch natural gas line has ruptured. if it has not, they are going to check each one of these 20 plus homes that have been evacuated to make sure damage to those homes and those gas lines before they lift the evacuation order. right now those residents are out of the home because of the fears there could be a crack or slight break in the four inch natural pressure gas line. that's what crews are working on right now. come back and give you an update in 15 to 30 minutes. live in bethlehem, jesse gary. also new from overnight in delaware county, firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a house fire that killed a family's dog.

it happened in alden just before 2:00 this morning. everyone, all the people inside the house got out safely. this morning, a public outpouring of sympathy for a family's private tragedy. a shooting inside the home took the lives of two young children and left their mother and their sibling in critical condition this morning. it happened in tabernacle township. tracy davidson joins us live in the digital operation center with an update. tracy a lot of questions about what happened there. >> there are. a lot of grief. grief counselors and members of the burlington school crisis team are heading to tabernacle elementary to provide support to the parents, the teachers, the students, members of the community gathered together last night for a candlelight vigil to remember the two children killed in the home and to pray for the mother and child that remain in the hospital with gunshot wounds. the four victims were found in the home yesterday on holly park drive. the surviving victims.

nick and his mother jeaninne lepage. authorities are not willing to say if this was an attempted murder/suicide. >> her kids are like my own kids and i just can't believe this happened. >> the suspect, that's something that we're going to wait to see where the evidence takes us. >> investigators recovered a dwgun and they're treating this as a homicide. a friend of jeaninne lepage says she was a nurse who had not worked for a long time. they lived in the same house with her sister's family and five people who lived in the home that were not harmed in the shooting. they are treating this as a murder/suicide. we'll continue to monitor this story. live in the digital operation center tracy davidson nbc news.

a federal judge may decide if new jersey can have legalized sports betting. the judge heard arguments at a hearing in trenton yesterday. on one side chris christie and state lawmakers who want sports betting legalized for casinos and horse racing tracks. it would help the economy. on the other side, the ncaa who say lifting that ban would harm their integrity. no matter what the judge decides today, a quick appeal is expected, so don't count on placing a wager any time soon. today, baggage handlers will return to work at philadelphia international airport after a one-day strike. we brought this to you live yesterday morning. they work for the contractor prime flight. yesterday they protested what they call unfair wages and labor practices. city council members and clergy promised to escort them back to work today and take action if they face retaliation. happening today, a judge will hand down a sentence to a man involved in a playground shooting that killed an innocent

teenage bystander. in the death of 17-year-old bernard scott. a shootout erupted last year near over brook high school. another man, stanley postel was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. this day care operator goes on trial today for leaving kids alone in her suv while she went shopping. karen thompson is charged with five counts of child endangerment. thompson went into the shop rite with five children, inclouding a baby in her care at the time. she left the kids inside her vehicle while she went inside the store. the kids were alone for at least 20 minutes. no one was hurt. 4:07 now. this morning in burlington county a community will come together again to remember a firefighter who died in the line of duty. sky force 10 flew over a service for christopher hunter last night. the firefighter died last weekend just after finishing his

shift. investigators are still trying to figure out exactly why he died. a second viewing and memorial ceremony will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 this morning. new this morning, secret service officers arrested another person outside the white house. officials say april lenhart had a handgun in a holster as she took part in a demonstration. agent charged her with possession of an unregistered firearm. today president obama will finalize his executive order on his immigration plan during a rally in las vegas. last night the president laid out sweeping changes to the immigration system. it allows millions of people without documentation to stay in the u.s. this morning republicans are blasting that move and vowing to block the order. >> those members of congress that question my authority to make immigration service to work better or acting where congress has failed, i have one answer. pass a bill. >> the plan provides relief for

about 5 million undocumented immigrants in the u.s. under the changes people in the country for more than five years could apply to state temporarily without deportation. the president says this is not amnesty. and people across the delaware valley are responding to the president's immigration plan. at this small mexican food shop a group of immigrants and their children watched the president's address last night. for many the executive order will bring big changes for their family and some lawmakers are questioning how the president handled the situation. >> trying to give our daughters a better future that we didn't have. we're trying to give them our best. >> we recognize as americans, this issue needs to be dealt with. the people elect the congress to enact legislation to enact laws for the president to then sign. >> referring to the action there, president obama waited for the house to okay a bill, but since lawmakers did not act,

he took that action. now your first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> a cold start this morning. the wind is blowing making it feel even colder. look at that live view from center city. the flags are blowing and a cold wind this morning. cold temperatures are back and we're below freezing this morning for most of the area and that wind is going to make it feel like it's in the teens to start with for parts of the area and 20s this afternoon. sunshine will be around this weekend and that will start the warming process, which will have us considerably warming, warmer by the end of the weekend. right now 18 degrees in mount pocono and willingten 29 degrees. a clear one, though. plenty of sunshine today, but a limited warming effect. no where near the temperatures we saw yesterday. perfectly clear across the delaware this morning and no sign of fog. look at what the wind is doing to the temperatures. feels like 19 degrees in philadelphia and 17 for

it's 4:15 and 28 degrees and no one is feeling that more now than some top executives in this area who have traded the comfort of their homes for the cold hard reality of being homeless. for one night, they are sleeping out. it's all part of a national campaign designed to raise money for kids and teens who are homeless. nbc 10 katy zachary is live in germantown with a look at how and what that group is doing. katy? >> about two dozen executives right now are sleeping behind this gate. they don't have much shelter with them. just a sleeping bag and a cardboard box. that's tough, let me tell you,

in this temperature that is 28 degrees right now. they're hosting the sleep out. a nonprofit that helps homeless youth. advocates say the problem is getting worse. many kids come from families who can no longer afford their home so the children are forced to fend for themselves. covenant house takes in as many kids as possible giving them food and a temporary place to stay. in an effort to raise money for this cause, executives across the country have volunteered to experience what being homeless is like. >> you don't sleep. you're out there, you're trying to keep your fingers warm. you're trying, you may fall asleep for two minutes and then a horn beeps, a siren goes off, someone screams outside. i can't imagine a kid having to go through that. that's why we do it. >> and that was toll brothers group president chris gaffney speaking. he is on the board for covenant house and tonight sleeping out in new york. but several of his colleagues

are behind me, behind the gate sleeping out here in philadelphia. we're going to talk to some of them as they wake up over the next few hours. reporting live in germantown, katy zachary. 4:17. this morning we're learning more about the gunman involved in that shooting at florida state university. police shot and killed myron may after he opened fire outside a school library. two students and a university employee was wounded. may was an attorney and a florida state graduate who had mental problems and feared the government was after him. in philadelphia, a robbery suspect remains in critical condition after a security guard shot him. nbc 10 was on scene last night in west oak lane. investigators tell us the guard shot the alleged robber several times. they say the man was armed with a knife. we have new information now on the death ceo john sheraton and his wife, joyce. two of their four son applied to be administrators of their

estate worth more than $2 million. filing paperwork in somerset, new jersey. we're learning more now about the two people who were killed in that deadly pileup earlier this week. jeremy augustine was an army veteran. he was on his way to work wednesday when that 18-wheeler smashed into his car causing a chain reaction crash with other cars. the other victim was a nurse from berks county. the driver of that truck that caused the crash fell asleep at the wheel. >> say a prayer for everybody that was involved in this incident. it's a huge tragedy. >> police say the truck driver stephen bernat was also speeding. he is in jail with $500,000 bail. in montgomery county, a man convicted a grandmother and baby will die by lethal injection. a judge handed down that sentence yesterday. last month a jury convicted him of murders that happened during

a bus kidnapping two years ago in king of prussia. happening today, a second community meeting in south philadelphia in the wake of some recent crimes there against young people. tonight's meeting is set for marconi park, that's where an attempted abduction of a teenage girl took place on monday. community members held their first meeting last night at 18th and johnson street, where a robbery and attempted rape of a teenage girl happened one week ago. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> heading out the door, you're going to need to bundle up, once again. we're seeing temperatures drop with clear skies over boat house row and see sunshine today, 31 degrees right now. still hours away from sunrise. that will likely drop into the 20s. already feels like it's in the 20s thanks to the wind at 17 miles per hour. look at the pocono mountains, the snow blowing through with winds that will be gusting to more than 20 miles per hour at times. 20s for northeast philadelphia.

trenton, washington township, wilmington is down to 29 degrees and is now 25 in quakertown and doylestown and delaware and south jersey, some spots in the very low 30s in delaware while most of interior new jersey is in the 20s right now and getting colder. satellite, though, does show we are in the clear. sunshine will be bright, but the cold air will continue to blow into the area today. it's this weekend that we'll see improving conditions. check out sunday, for example. the future weather, 5:00 sunday morning, won't be as cold. 34 degrees. in fact, sunday morning. that's the kind of high temperature we're looking for in our area today. during the afternoon on sunday, even though clouds will be moving thin at times, the temperatures moving into the 50s. for today, though, we'll have none of that. just sunshine. sunshine, windy and cold. afternoon temperatures in the 30s that will feel like the 20s. the warm up and the timing with the seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. all right, bill, 20 minutes

well, cell phone users say they have better experience with small carriers than larger ones. asked subscribers about thaur service and consumer cellular scored high, as did a new mobile

service. but among the big four companies, t-mobile scored good for value, but, sprint, verizon and at&t rated very poor. representatives for those three companies said they made improvement to help improve customer experience. and victims of domestic violence now have some cell phones to help protect them from abuse. the philadelphia police department teamed up with women against abuse for the hopeline program. in the past two months they collected hundreds of used cell phones and make those into prepaid phone and donate them to groups that offer. >> these phones serve as a vital lifeline for help and allow users to safely connect to loved ones that their abuse had pushed away as part of the cycle of control, isolation and isolation inherent to domestic violence. >> if you'd like to donate a used phone, drop it off at any verizon location. we have a warning for senior citizens this morning about your medication. according to a new report by the aarp, the average cost of brand
