bucks. estimates black friday is such an event in our country, four out of ten american shoppers do their holiday buying today. >> the question that's on a lot of consumers' minds is do you actually go out and buy today or do you maybe play the waiting game? the answer is both. you probably do a little bit of shopping today and then you supplement that in subsequent days leading up to christmas. >> reporter: retailers hope this year's falling gas prices will help accelerate sales. it's estimated for every one penny drop in the price at the pump, consumers have an additional billion dollars in discretionary spending money. >> holiday spending is rather good, stronger than what we've seen in a number of years. many folks are forecasting we'll see holiday sales grow overall more than 4%, which is quite strong. >> for parents -- >> my teenage son wants video games and my 5-year-old wants ninja turtles and i'm not sure

friday really takes hold. natalie? >> ron allen in ferguson. >> weekend "today" sheinelle jones is here with breaking news out of texas this morning. >> yes. a gunman is dead after a shootout with police on the downtown streets of austin, texas. the suspect was shooting at police headquarters and other nearby buildings. he was shot and killed by police. police still aren't sure about the motive. no one else was injured in the incident. some dramatic video this morning of two new york boys being can pulled to safety after being buried in a snow bank for several hours. a plow operator inadvertently pushed snow over their fort norkts realizing they were there. >> the snow was probably six or seven feet tall. >> early thanksgiving morning, captured on a cell phone camera, shows police and residents frantically digging out two boys buried in snow for hours in subfreezing hours. >> wasn't thinking much, just

trying to get to the kids. >> police say the cousins, ages 9 and 11, were building a fort when a plow driver, clearing the lot, dumped more snow on top of them. when the boys didn't return home around 10:00 pm, newburg police canvassed the neighborhood until something caught an officer's eye. >> at that point, he thought he would take a couple of digs in there and saw the boot of one of the children. >> everybody was contributing with shovels. >> the boys were found conscious and suffering from exposure from the cold much even though they had to spend thanksgiving in the hospital, this mother is grateful that her son and his cousin are alive. she post this had picture on instagram, praising newburg police. >> we're glad they're okay. pope francis' trip to turkey. richard en gechgel is in istanb.

richard? >> reporter: ongoing refugee crisis because of the wars in iraq and syria. pope francis is only the fourth pope to visit turkey, a muslim country with deep christian roots. for 1,000 years, istanbul, then constantanople, was the seat of the christian empire. but this is also a region at war. turkish media report 10,000 police have been directed to protect the pope's three-day trip. a concern is isis. the pope has taken a strong stand against isis, supporting the use of force against them and calling their persecution of christians in syria and iraq the worst since the early days of

christianity. isis in areas of control has given christians the choice of converting to islam or being killed. many christians escaped and are now refugees. isis speaks frequently about the pope, calling him a crousader. showing the black flag superimposed in st. peter's square. he comes here to istanbul where he will mostly be meeting with orthodox christian leaders. >> thank you, richard. australian lawyer is looking on the bright side. he set a world record by stringing up 1.2 million christmas lights. it took volunteer lighting architects and designer engineers months to set up this display. giant wrapped christmas gifts. this display will help raise money for a charity. i feel like the bar gets higher

every year, doesn't it? >> just be glad all the light bulbs are connected. there's always one. >> 1.2 million. all right, dylan, now to the forecast. how is it looking? >> around here, it's fine. let's talk about australia for a little while longer. huge storm hit brisbane. strong enough to rip some of the roofs off homes. streets were flood out. 90,000 people are without power at the height of the storm. now about 68,000 people are still without power. you can see the reason why, all the downed trees and power lines here, and even these planes just tossed like toys. pretty wet weather up near seattle. stretching to the coast of oregon here. you can see pockets of heavier rain. and we do have a flood watch in effect, right in the seattle area, because we've already seen a few inches of rain fall. it's that strong onshore flow

that's going to keep the moisture around throughout the day today. those flood watches in effect until later on this afternoon. cold front will move in, change the rain to snow, possibly even in seattle. across the mountains and much-needed rain and snow back through northern california. we could see several inches of rain. and you could see in the sierra nevadas, we could end up with a foot of snow. northern rockies, moving into montana, you could also see about a foot or two of snow. especially as we go into tonight and then into tomorrow as well. that's a look at the weather across the country.

"into the woods." >> adaptation of a popular broadway play. dream cast, anna kendrick from "pitch perfect" is cinderella, meryl streep, who will surely get an oscar nomination for playing the witch can sing so amazingly. do you know who steal this is movie surprisingly? chris pine. >> really? >> "star trek" action star is a great singer and so funny. he plays cinderella's prince. he is a riot.

a real scream. and "exxodus: gods and kings." from river scott, who did gladiator. this is along the same lines as scope. christian bale plays moses. you see the parting of the red sea, all the plagues. it's pretty amazing. >> big movie. let's move to oscar buzz. you love "wild." >> it's probably my favorite of all the ones i've seen all season. at a crossroads in her life, decided to walk the entire pacific coast of the united states. and reese witherspoon plays her. that's laura dern playing her mom. reese witherspoon, an oscar winner for "walk the line" will definitely get another nomination for this. >> and another one "american sniper" where bradley cooper takes on a real-life sniper. >> chris kyle, 150 confirmed kills. this is a great war movie,

directed by clint eastwood and i think it's one of bradley cooper's best acting i've ever seen. if you like movies like "the hurt locker" or "saving private ryan" you will love this one, too. >> and, of course, "unbroken" directed by angelina jolie. survived years as a prisoner of war. this one, i haven't seen yet. i'm so curious about it. i've seen about 15 minutes and it looks very, very impressive. >> i'm hearing good things about that. family oriented. family movies here. "penguins of madagascar." >> taking some of the most popular characters from the madagascar movies and follows them in their double lives as spies. of course, penguins are spies. didn't you know that? of course that's what's happening. he has a movie called "imitation game" that's out. one of the voices of this from dream works. people love this movie, especially for younger kids. and then we're going to end up with "annie."

temperatures in philadelphia, 36 degrees. humidity is up 57%. wind speeds are picking up out of the northwest, 20 miles per hour. that means we're dealing with the windchill, so temperatures feel like they're in the 20s when you step out the door. 38 our high today. 50s by sunday. we've seen a steady stream of shoppers flocking to malls and stores all over the philadelphia region for the annual black friday shopping frenzy. and this is really the second wave of the annual dash for deals. people began hitting the malls early this morning, but others got a jump-start on their bargain hunting on thanksgiving. the king of prussia mall was packed with holiday shoppers yesterday. the mall opened at 6:00 p.m. for some people it's about the savings. for others it's become a holiday tradition. well, if you're not sure what to buy for people on your list or where to go nbc10.com has you covered. just head over to our home page and click on the link for the holiday gift guide. well, this morning a woman is recovering after firefighters saved her from a burning

building in atlantic city. it happened at an abandoned condo complex along pacific avenue and south vermont yesterday evening. firefighters found the woman inside. she did not have a pulse. they gave her cpr and revived her. the fire chief believes she and others may have been in the building illegally. no one else was hurt. and still no cause for the fire. we'll have another update in 25 minutes. you can always get the latest news and water on nbc10.com.

>> hours, yeah. >> police said their fort protected them, made a little air pocket so they could breathe in there. they're both going to be okay. the parents looked for them themselves, thought they were just out in the yard, in the neighborhood and then realized, wait a minute, this is a situation. they called the police and the police saw a shovel sticking out. >> trying to dig out from the inside. after a while they probably thought uh-oh. >> so much snow. it happened in newburg. they got really pummeled with snow. >> if i was out for hours with my sister, my mom wouldn't think anything of it for a while. >> right. >> but then with nightfall, that's kind of scary. >> seal island in south africa. great white shark and a seal, freeing itself from the grips of those jaw. >> incredible. >> the seal got away. i don't know how. from the great white shark. >> it looks like it flipped

sideways, flipping out. >> slippery little guy. >> that's a place you don't want to be, seal island if you're a seal. >> no one has the buffet for the great white shark. >> great white alley. let's get a check of the weather from our buddy, dylan dreyer, in for al this morning. >> hey, guys. the weather is nice and dry to get out and get all your shopping done, except in the northwest. stretching into medford, oregon. we have flood watches right in seattle itself because of the heavy rain. already, a couple of inches of rain has fallen. we'll see even more over the course of the next several hours. but then watch what happens as this cold front moves down from the north. could even see the rain change over to snow for a little while. not a lot of accumulation. it pushes that rain into california. a place that certainly needs it. we will see several inches of rain. perhaps as much as two to three inches. you go up in elevation. we're going to see through parts of the sierra nevadas, a foot of snow. in the east, especially over the

taking a look at the headlines, second wave of shoppers hitting the mall this morning in what has become a two-day kickoff to the holiday shopping season. many big box stores opened their doors on thanksgiving. so all eyes are on the registers today with stores pushing more deals earlier in the month, the holiday weekend has become less important. thanks to amazon, the online shopping giant can now connect you with a handyman to mount flat screens on your wall, assembling bicycles and installing car stereos, part of the new program called amazon local services available in select cities in nine states. if you're like many americans,

looking for those must-have holiday deals and the crowds aren't just hitting the malls, of course, many are searching for sales at the outlets. and the dash for deals started last night at this kohl's store in delaware county. nbc 10 found more than a few shoppers who had their hands full. look at that guy. a big haul. black friday may belong to the malls but locally owned stores are gearing up for what they call small business saturday. shops throughout philadelphia neighborhoods are hoping to welcome people who want to shop small tomorrow. small bils saturday will be especially big in old city had is home to the highest concentration of the city's independent boutiques, restaurants and galleries. and the shops along kings highway will be ready to serve shoppers on small business saturday. we were there as the businesses saw a good deal of foot traffic.

with a couple of inches of rain. tomorrow we're not looking at a whole lot much more than rain in california and mountain snow. and in the eastern great lakes, just a few isolated rain snow showers, nothing too bad. on sunday again looking mainly quiet. we warm up in the east. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. it is going to be pretty chilly, especially through the northern plains and upper midwest where hi, it's a freezing start to the morning especially on this black friday as folks are heading out to go shopping. by the time we head into the afternoon, temperatures will only warm into the mid to high 30s. between 36 and 39 degrees. sunny and cold for us. as we approach into the rest of your weekend, you'll notice a warmi ining trend especially by sunday. 55 degrees milder conditions in store. on monday as you head back to work, same thing, and we stay close to average next week. >> and that's your latest

together? and some parmesan cheese. this is what's going to make it italian and hot pepper flakes. i can't help myself. i just love hot stuff. and so -- >> we mix it up. >> shape it into the balls. >> then what you do, mix this even more. you put them right into the soup. here goes the soup. now what also makes this italian is you start with escarole. i had onions and garlic sauteing. add escarole or finish with some spinach. this just wilts now. dumplings take about 15 minutes in there covered. >> and leftover turkey. >> put it right on top. >> right on top. there you go. >> look how beautiful it looks. >> and i always finish my soups and stews with lemon juice. it just brightens it up. >> brightens the flavor. >> thank you so much. love that you put it all in one pan. >> so much more fun.

wouldn't get offended by it. >> couldn't a person say, yes, i'm still happy? >> that -- i think the best response is actually, you know what, i am, i'm still single and looking, so if you happen to know someone, bring them over. >> yes, okay. >> let's move on. chloe wants to know how to deal with the controlling mother or father-in-law. >> good luck. >> how do you do that? >> first you have to understand people's motivation. in all human dynamics, what is motivating this person to be that way. with a controlling mother-in-law, it is feeling like i'm not significant, like i'm not important, either as a mother or mother-in-law. the second part -- >> what if she isn't. >> if she isn't -- >> important to the -- >> well, understand that that insecurity is not going to change. but you can influence. so if you say, you know what, i can go some way to making this person feel a bit more important, you know, it might be that i talk about how, you know, her son hasn't stopped talking

over the last week, it might be saying i can't wait to have your turkey, it was so amazing last year i can't wait. or give them both a glass of wine and say you guys go and talk. >> i think one of the problems is that someone who is a controlling mother or father-in-law might try and take control of every situation. so instead of you addressing them directly and saying, look, you know what, it is not okay you're doing this, we're in a relationship and you're not in it, you should have a conversation with your partner, you never want to get between your partner and his parents. it is very, very sticky. have a conversation with your partner and say, look, this is how i'm feeling and i feel like i'm not as important here, and this is why. can we be on the same team and you have a conversation with your parents that reflects both of our opinions. >> holly wrote this about her boyfriend, how do i know if he's ready to meet my family. i don't want to ask him to a holiday dinner too soon and have things become awkward. i also don't want him to feel left out. it is a good question. >> a great question. you say to him, the option is there. if you haven't got anything else going on, you're more than welcome to come thanksgiving at my house.
