speaking of black friday, the black friday shopping frenzy, day for bargain hunters on a mission for deals. we fanned out across the country from a mall in minnesota to a packed shopping center in ohio to right here in new york's always busy times square and nbc's kerry sanders braving the crowds for us north of miami. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here at the aventura mall, crowds began showing up very early, all chasing the great dea deal. >> three, two, one! >> reporter: america's holiday shopping season is now at full tilt. with bargain hunters determined not to miss out on those after-thanksgiving deals. >> last year i came late and there were lines and lines everywhere. >> reporter: already this morning, several videos popping up online, allegedly showing chaos in the aisles, as customers battle to save a few

bucks. estimates black friday is such an event in our country, four out of ten american shoppers do their holiday buying today. >> the question that's on a lot of consumers' minds is do you actually go out and buy today or do you maybe play the waiting game? the answer is both. you probably do a little bit of shopping today and then you supplement that in subsequent days leading up to christmas. >> reporter: retailers hope this year's falling gas prices will help accelerate sales. it's estimated for every one penny drop in the price at the pump, consumers have an additional billion dollars in discretionary spending money. >> holiday spending is rather good, stronger than what we've seen in a number of years. many folks are forecasting we'll see holiday sales grow overall more than 4%, which is quite strong. >> for parents -- >> my teenage son wants video games and my 5-year-old wants ninja turtles and i'm not sure

woke up on thanksgiving without power in the wakative strong nor'easter that slammed the east coast. dylan has more on that situation. >> talk about adding insult to injury. first and third, treacherous travel for thanksgiving and then many find themselves dine nth dark. as a stunning sunrise signaled thanksgiving day in the northeast, it was still lights out for hundreds of thousands of people. heavy snow, up to 20 inches in some states, brought down trees and branchs and power lines across the region. this pole snapped by a heavy brain. left without a working stop light. >> it is beautiful when the snow sticks to the trees like this, but that is the problem. >> reporter: the heavy snow wasn't the only problem. heavy snow brought down power line. >> people were trying to get home or get some place for the holiday and a lot of people slid into poles. >> crews are working around the

clock to restore power, in good spirits, despite their holidays being disrupted. >> we don't leave until the last person is on. >> winter weather may have gobbled up the power, but new englanders are nothing if not resourceful. photos posted on social media show gas stoves and outdoor grills being used to cook their thanksgiving feast and dining by candlelight. thanksgiving plans adjusted by mother nature but no cold turkeys in sight. fortunately, most of the power has returned this morning. for some of the harder hit areas in parts of new hampshire and maine, it could be another day or two before the lights are turned on. >> quieter weather today, we hope. >> minus the northwest it's looking good. trying a new strategy today to bring attention to that grand jury decision in the michael brown case, a boycott of black friday shopping. nbc's ron allen has the very latest. ron, good morning.

>> reporter: demanding justice for michael brown. attempts to disrupt shopping malls and major retailers, a much more profound impact. >> reporter: around 75 prote protesters marched into a st. louis, missouri, target, to protest black friday, one of several major retail stores visited as police stood watch. in ferguson, taking up positions outside walmart as calls spread on social media with #blackout black friday and #boycott black friday. together we can stand up and spark change tweeted entrepreneur russell simmons. thanksgiving mostly brought calm. gathered around their table, one chair left empty, picture tweettweet ed by advocates for families who have lost loved ones from

violence. seven were arrested. >> hello. >> thank you. >> reporter: steve moore took down some of the boards protecting his ferguson restaurant and hoping customers would come back. >> i'm barely making it. i have to reach out and let people know there's hope. >> reporter: he still offered free meals to guests from a nearby church. so what's good? >> everything. >> reporter: everything. do you think the trouble here is over? >> no, i do not. it's just beginning. >> reporter: and now supporters of the man at the center of attention here, officer darren wilson, also are speaking out. >> people out there have offered bounties on his life. he believes if he ever went back to a department he would put other officer at risk. >> reporter: realistically speaking, darren could never be a police officer again. >> reporter: they say wilson intends to keep a very low profile, anxious to see if this call of a boycott for black

friday really takes hold. natalie? >> ron allen in ferguson. >> weekend "today" sheinelle jones is here with breaking news out of texas this morning. >> yes. a gunman is dead after a shootout with police on the downtown streets of austin, texas. the suspect was shooting at police headquarters and other nearby buildings. he was shot and killed by police. police still aren't sure about the motive. no one else was injured in the incident. some dramatic video this morning of two new york boys being can pulled to safety after being buried in a snow bank for several hours. a plow operator inadvertently pushed snow over their fort norkts realizing they were there. >> the snow was probably six or seven feet tall. >> early thanksgiving morning, captured on a cell phone camera, shows police and residents frantically digging out two boys buried in snow for hours in subfreezing hours. >> wasn't thinking much, just

trying to get to the kids. >> police say the cousins, ages 9 and 11, were building a fort when a plow driver, clearing the lot, dumped more snow on top of them. when the boys didn't return home around 10:00 pm, newburg police canvassed the neighborhood until something caught an officer's eye. >> at that point, he thought he would take a couple of digs in there and saw the boot of one of the children. >> everybody was contributing with shovels. >> the boys were found conscious and suffering from exposure from the cold much even though they had to spend thanksgiving in the hospital, this mother is grateful that her son and his cousin are alive. she post this had picture on instagram, praising newburg police. >> we're glad they're okay. pope francis' trip to turkey. richard en gechgel is in istanb.

richard? >> reporter: ongoing refugee crisis because of the wars in iraq and syria. pope francis is only the fourth pope to visit turkey, a muslim country with deep christian roots. for 1,000 years, istanbul, then constantanople, was the seat of the christian empire. but this is also a region at war. turkish media report 10,000 police have been directed to protect the pope's three-day trip. a concern is isis. the pope has taken a strong stand against isis, supporting the use of force against them and calling their persecution of christians in syria and iraq the worst since the early days of

christianity. isis in areas of control has given christians the choice of converting to islam or being killed. many christians escaped and are now refugees. isis speaks frequently about the pope, calling him a crousader. showing the black flag superimposed in st. peter's square. he comes here to istanbul where he will mostly be meeting with orthodox christian leaders. >> thank you, richard. australian lawyer is looking on the bright side. he set a world record by stringing up 1.2 million christmas lights. it took volunteer lighting architects and designer engineers months to set up this display. giant wrapped christmas gifts. this display will help raise money for a charity. i feel like the bar gets higher

every year, doesn't it? >> just be glad all the light bulbs are connected. there's always one. >> 1.2 million. all right, dylan, now to the forecast. how is it looking? >> around here, it's fine. let's talk about australia for a little while longer. huge storm hit brisbane. strong enough to rip some of the roofs off homes. streets were flood out. 90,000 people are without power at the height of the storm. now about 68,000 people are still without power. you can see the reason why, all the downed trees and power lines here, and even these planes just tossed like toys. pretty wet weather up near seattle. stretching to the coast of oregon here. you can see pockets of heavier rain. and we do have a flood watch in effect, right in the seattle area, because we've already seen a few inches of rain fall. it's that strong onshore flow

that's going to keep the moisture around throughout the day today. those flood watches in effect until later on this afternoon. cold front will move in, change the rain to snow, possibly even in seattle. across the mountains and much-needed rain and snow back through northern california. we could see several inches of rain. and you could see in the sierra nevadas, we could end up with a foot of snow. northern rockies, moving into montana, you could also see about a foot or two of snow. especially as we go into tonight and then into tomorrow as well. that's a look at the weather across the country.

freezing start to the morning, especially on this black friday as folks are heading out to go shopping. by the time we head into the afternoon, temperatures will only warm into the mid to high 30s between 36 and 39 degrees. sunny and cold for us. as we push into the rest of your weekend, you notice the warming trend especially by sunday. 55 degrees and milder conditions in store. on monday as you head back to work, same thing. and we stay close to average next week. >> and that's your latest forecast. >> all right, dylan. thanks a lot. they're calling it green friday in colorado where stores, selling newly legal recreational marijuana are hoping for big crowds today. here is nbc's hallie jackson. >> reporter: tis the season for door busters and at this colorado store, expectations

"bill" cosby. >> for years, he insisted that people call him dr. cosby. it wasn't a joke. he received his doctorate, but now severing ties with that university, saying bill cosby has agreed to resign as an honorary co-chair of umass amherst's capital campaign. he no longer has any affiliation with the campaign nor serves in any other capacity. berkeley music no longer awards an online scholarship in mr. cosby's name.

today he has one of those stories. tell us about it. >> this is an incredible god winks story of hope and encouragement. the story is about a grandmother named joan kirk, who had been grieving the loss of her husband. she went to her grandson's soccer game, and it was there that she realized that the finger that the ring that her husband slipped on her finger 38 years before was missing. and the family was frantic. they looked everywhere and they got out a metal detector and they had no luck. katie morris and her granddaughter picks up the story from here. >> oh, wow. >> last summer, my husband and i took a trip to myrtle beach with my father-in-law and his new lady friend joyce. we didn't know joyce. and i wanted to make her feel at home. so i began a conversation about her beautiful jewelry. especially the many rings she wore. she said every ring has a story.
